Garner finally has a unique dining option and I am ecstatic! What used to be a rundown Chinese restaurant in a often forgotten shopping center, is now an understated but absolutely delicious Mediterranean restaurant. When my husband and I first walked in, I was not impressed with the decor of powder blue walls and cheap Greece posters however, I was so excited to have a new place in Garner that I was determined to let the food speak for itself...and it did! The menu offered a variety of options for every palette. The appetizers covered the basics, like hummus, feta, and calamari, but also had dishes such as spanakopita and grilled octopus, with prices ranging from $6-10. The main menu offered salads, sandwiches, pasta, seafood, and vegetarian dishes, with prices ranging from $7-$23. The wine list offered glasses of house wine for $4 (woohoo!) and both traditional and Greek wines and beer starting at around $5. Finally the dessert menu was quite impressive, offering items such as baklava, tiramisu, cheesecake, and more for only $3! For our appetizer we opted for the grilled octopus (a first for both of us) and it was awesome! The dish was one large tentacle, grilled and seasoned with balsamic vinegar and oregano, and had a dipping sauce of what seemed to be tzatziki. For our main meals, hubby went with a basic gyro platter, which had a large portion of very flavorful gyro meat, house made tzatziki, fries, and pita. I ordered the Vegetarian Combo which had three rice stuffed grape leaves, two falafel, spanakopita, fresh veggies, rice, and a side of house made tzatziki. I have to say....my dish was unbelievable!! The grape leaves were warm and not too lemony, the spanakopita was freshly made with the perfect blend of spinach and feta, and the falafel was THE BEST part of my dish! The patties were flavored and fried to perfection and I could seriously eat them every day! To top off our already deliciously filling meal, we HAD to try the baklava and I am so glad we did. It was big enough for 2-3 people to share and it was heavenly! From the flaky phyllo dough and the crunchy walnut filling, to the ooey gooey honey that drenched the pastry, we both loved every...single...bite. All in all, this was a GREAT experience. The decor needs improvement, but both the waitress and the food were top notch. I will absolutely tell everyone I know to go to Alexander's....I want to see this restaurant around for many years to come!! read more

Combination review of two recent visits to Alexanders. The first on a Tuesday evening and the second on a Sunday evening. Not many folks dining either time but I was pleased that the service was both prompt and professional. The waitress brought warmed bread with olive oil and spices. The wine menu was adequate and, actually a bit interesting. I ordered a wine inspired by a goddess. How could you go wrong? Actually, the wine was rather good. A nice blend that had overtones of Cab Sav, Shiraz, and a touch of Merlot. Well worth the moderate price. On both visits the servers were very friendly and if you desired, they would engage in conversation. I can see how it would be very easy to become a regular here and enjoy an almost friendship type relationship with the staff. Ok, so the food... On my first visit I had planned on having a standard Mediterranean dish, I was temped by one of the specials - a Sea Bass. As you might know, Sea Bass is a picky little fish so I knew I ordered it would challenge the kitchen. The Sea Bass was beautiful and cooked to perfection. The entire meal was well prepared and had a well above average taste for Garner. The quality actually rivaled that of an upper scale restaurant in our neighboring Raleigh. My only recommendation would be to go just a bit lighter on the sauce. Great. Yummy. But a bit overpowering. Perhaps order light sauce or on the side so that you can make the dish to your tastes. On my second visit I had to go with some beef, so I ordered the Beef Kabobs. I ordered the same wine as before as it was so nice. It didn't disappoint the second time. Anyway, the Kabobs were cooked as ordered, were tender, and had a nice flavor. The purple onions were just a tad harsh but it is winter and should be expected. The gilled vegitables were lightly seasoned crisp without being hard. The baked potato wedges were probably the most interesting item on the plate. They do have a rather lemony taste so don't expect a southern wedge. Actually, I never decided if I really liked them or not. There were two sauces with the dish. I tasted both, but really liked the food sans sauce. Overall, an excellent choice for Garner. If you look at my other ratings you will see that I am rather stingy with my top ratings. I'm giving this my tops because of where it is located. If it were in a large city, I would give it one level lower due to available options. In Garner, this is one of your best best for urban food in suburbia. read more

The love I have for Spanakopita is deep and it's real. The warm spinach, the salty creamy feta and the buttery phyllo dough creates a cosmic orgy in my mouth. I started making it at home but that was dangerous because I would finish off an entire tray within a day. So now when I need a fix I come to Alexanders. First let me say that I am not of Greek origin so I cannot vouch for how "authentic" the food is, but I can say that it's GOOD. They're located in this random little strip mall next to a post office and sadly I think their location is really contributing to their lack of business. They always appear to be empty, which makes no sense because, like I said, the food is good! The Little Ceasars a few doors down is busier than they are on daily basis (if that tells you anything). Service is awesome and the waitresses are super attentive. It has dim lighting that creates a kind of intimate vibe, although some might find it too dark. These folks are REALLY trying to create an enjoyable dining experience and that's really refreshing for the city of Garner. Most of the dining options in the area are corporate, soulless, chains churning out processed muck for us to shovel into our pie hole. This is the one place I can think of where culinary pride exists. The spanakopita (while not the best I've ever had) is damn good. The 2 tiny complaints I have are they use unpitted olives and they don't always have background music on. Other than that, they're peachy! read more

We stumbled upon this place today by asking Google for vegetarian restaurants nearby -- what serendipity and a delicious lunch! The falafel pita and dolmathes were some of the best I've eaten. The salad ingredients were fresh and delicious. But save room for dessert! We opted for th Galaktoboureko, which is hard to find. And the service was outstanding. My husband and I tried this place on a whim for lunch on a Saturday, and we were so glad we did! The vinaigrette is spectacular and the tzatziki is the best I've ever had. My family and ate lunch and had a meeting with our community garden. The large meeting room is very bright and sunny. They really catered to our group which was large and included a preschooler and a few people with special diet needs. They even allowed us to stay after they closed down for lunch for the remainder of our meeting. I can't say enough about the good service. However, I was kind of disappointed with the food, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I returned to Alexander's for lunch with a different friend and had a lovely time. The service was very attentive, and the food was great once again. I really appreciated the good bread, which came with an excellent olive oil. They'd even infused the oil with garlic - just the right amount. I had the lamb sandwich again, because I can't resist lamb. It was good, though I would have spiced the lamb a bit more. I had a salad on the side, and this was very nice. The food is fairly good. Problem is once again the wait staff could use some work. The place is almost empty and our waitress seemed completely oblivious to the fact that she just took away a salad that was uneaten because it was covered in the onion I specifically asked not to have on it. If you want to experience a wonderful pleasant taste of a real Gyro then look no further. Alexander's is perhaps one of the best Mediterranean tastes I have experienced in a long time. The menu prices are very reasonable and portions are large enough to fill the hungriest of men... and women. Plenty of parking (next to the post office) and the best time perhaps is lunch. This place is great! I cannot think of one bad thing about it, It's a very nice restaurant that is perfect to bring a date Friday or Saturday night for the live music, candles on the table and various flowers, or on a Sunday morning for their phenomenal brunch menu. My favorite restaurant currently in the Raleigh area, but I love Greek food so that could be a tad bit bias. The gyro platter, and gyro sandwich are among the best I've had and gyro's are my favorite so I order one every single time I go to a restaurant that serves them. My friends and I usually go to Taverna Agora in Raleigh for Greek food, but we all live near White Oak Shopping Center in Garner. They discovered Alexander's when going to the post office one day. Today was my first time eating there. I must say it was fantastic. I had the Moussaka (Baked ground beef, tomato, eggplant & potatoes topped with bechamel) I have had this dish many times in different restaurants, and I have to say this was the best I have ever eaten. Also had the baklava for dessert and once again the best I have ever had . Service was friendly and on point. They told us they are still working on the decor. Price was a fraction of what you would pay at Taverna. We will definitely be regulars at Alexander's. read more

Ordered the veal chop & mixed veggies with the mushroom Marsala sauce & the moussaka. My goodness, everything was cooked to perfection! I was so pleased with the meal that I had to come up with an excuse to my husband to go back for lunch the next day. The veal was perfectly seared with the right amount of seasonings. The veggies seemed undercooked, however, the slight crunch was actually a good contrast to the soft chop. The Marsala sauce was a definite star on this dish. I normally do not like Mediterranean food but Alexander's was delicious! My favorite thing that I tried was the Spanakopita, I recommend that you try this appetizer. Wow- So I've been here a few times. The food and service is typically pretty decent. No complaints really, until today. I actually planned on going to Just Cookin' but sadly they appear to have closed. Nonetheless, a friend and I meet here for brunch. I've been in the service industry, you're busy, and frazzled- I get it. But not never, nowhere have I ever been asked to leave AND while I still have half a drink because they needed the table. Ma'am, we just spent a good $50plus at your establishment and you want us to leave? Okay, since today is my day for rewarding deserving restaurants: Here's the deal: I requested that my folks take me here for my birthday, sight unseen. The food is excellent. So very, very good. I ordered the appetizer/sampler as a meal, which included: baba ganoush, tzatziki, lamb meatballs, feta, calamari, hummus, spanakopita, and gyro meat. My folks ordered the stuffed chicken, and ravioli, which they weren't able to finish. I visited the next day, and ate some of the leftovers, cold. Fantastic. They offered a light dessert, which my parents loved. The service was very good, if not excellent. Why they lack the full "five star treatment" is atmosphere: The music was soft, almost inaudible, and I heard the conversation of the folks in the nearby booth, perfectly. During the latter part of the week, they have live music. I hope they don't mix it in the same way. The booths are crowded. My sister is a skinny girl, and I'm an average guy, by BMI standards. It was still tight. The decor needs an update. Bottom line: If you're unconcerned about atmosphere, five stars. Great food. But if you want to be comfortably content, you're going to have reservations here. read more

Normally I love this place, however they had someone new in training and he totally messed up my order. Even though I questioned about the giant Greek salad he brought out as a side he still said it was correct. When he brought out my entrée with another Greek salad on the side and brought out the wrong entrée I ordered a Gyro sandwich not a platter which was more expensive. He said I don't know what to do. I said you need to take that salad off my bill. Then when I explained I did not order the platter but a sandwich he offered to exchange it but I was already late and hungry. I was not offered any money off of the platter. My tip to this young man would be please listen up when someone orders repeat the order back to them. Don't abandon them after you deliver the food ask if there's anything else they need perhaps give them more water. Everyone has to learn and everyone has a learning curve however I feel that management should still be shadowing him to make sure he is doing things correctly. I will give this place another try because I do like the food. Hope this young man can learn to be a better server. Also had to ask for my bill after I sat there for a lengthy amount of time clearly I was finished eating. Sigh I also thought it was interesting how no one came up to ask me how he was doing or how everything was. Very friendly staff. Visited on a Wednesday at 6:00pm and we were the only ones there. Very nice inside. The food was very good, and the waitress made excellent recommendations, as she was very knowledgable about the menu. We spent about $90 for two people but that included, Appetizer, Sangria, Entree, and Desert for two people. I'd say worth it! read more
