Walked in behind a large group of people last night and watched them all get served. When the bartender gets to me he says he "just stopped serving." I explain we (myself and 3 friends) just want one round of shots because it was my 30th birthday and I just got into town at the end of a 1900 mile road trip. He looked at me and said "that's too bad the bar has been open since 10am" and walked away. I don't remember encountering rudeness like that at Alfredo's when I lived here. But I guess the do treat people they perceive to be "tourists" like poop. read more

Walked in here with two friends (others were on their way) for my Birthday. 5 people were at the bar. Bartender gave us the evil eye then proceeded to STARE AT THE WALL to ignore us. Not sure if he was drunk or just did not like that we were in our late 20's not 50's. After a few tries of getting him to speak a patron turned around and said "would you like me to check ID's for you" Are you serious?????? Bartender never said a word and acted like we were invisible when we were 4ft away. So after a few failed attempts we took our business down to Lallas and said screw that place. HOW RUDE! In case the owner of this place cares whoever your bartender was on 9/12 (Wed. night) is a total prick. I have seen little (emphasis on little) Alfredo's go from empty old locals bar to a hot spot! I just love that we have somewhere to go near Alvarado that isn't a) crowded b) ghetto c) expensive. This is the perfect little bar. You can always get a seat, the drinks are cheap and it is perpetually dark in there! Support this little bar so it never goes away! read more

The only reason that I didn't drop 5 stars on this little gem is because one of the bartenders there absolutely sucks. She is a total wet blanket and pretty much runs out anyone trying to have fun. This place is just what I like. It old, dark and great bartender. Matt!!! This place really gives you a feel of old town. The entire building is stone and if I am not mistaken it is built over a hole?? Maybe the last time I went here I had to many martinis and I made that part up. Locals spot, but if you're going to go someplace outside of the box give it a go. We went because the family owned bar was a friend of a friend's family. We had City written all over our foreheads and as soon as we walked in it got real quiet. Is that going to stop us...nope. Love me some Fredos. Nothining is creepier than this bar...(other than maybe Sagovias)...and its just is what it is. The picture of Joe Montana on the wall framed was a huge selling point for me. I am not a fan or anything...I just thought it was awesome. I try and go as often as i can. read more

I agree with Josh. The bartenders can be pretty overbearing sometimes. Deirdre is great though and it's a great place to go if you don't want to deal with tourists. The inside is kinda shady and not a lot of light. Very vintage like that. And I love it. Very liberal with the alcoholin mixed drinks. read more

Im a local..got to say I really like this place...dimly lit, little gothic like..but very relaxing! I don't care what anyone says..I've met all of the bartenders..they are usually very nice..Doug, Chuck, Matt, Fran (when they were there). I can't complain...I understand..they can have attitudes sometimes...but seeing some of the clientele they have to deal with..I'd have an attitude too! But really all in all..it's a great bar, not a club scene which i love! read more

Great location (near downtown but not on the Alvarado scene), great service (Chuck is a gentleman and a scholar), great drinks and very comfortable. Mellow, warm, dim and all-around inviting. I hope Alfredo's keeps doing exactly what it's doing now for a long, long time. read more

Alfredo's is my favorite tavern for when I'm feeling moody. The darkness is always soothing and their jukebox is probably the best in town.

Stumbling around local Yelp and thought it was funny to see 'Fredo's listed here, our local dive bar! Every town has one (or more). Yes, they still smoke in here, yes you'll get a dirty look or two from the barkeep when you're out of town group stumbles in. But the drinks are strong and the fire is warm and there's no Jarhead's looking to steal your girlfriend on a Saturday night. If you want the latter, head for the Mucky Duck. read more

I've only been here twice and I had a ball both times. I went with two others the first time and alone the second time and I was well received and I recommend this spot to anyone that wants a dark cozy place with no drama and a bunch of youngsters wanting to get drunk and stupid to hang out and enjoy. The bartender was the rudest person I've interacted with in a LONG time, and I work in customer service. The place was EMPTY on a Friday night, and now I know why. The prices are ok but the service is terrible. We are new to Monterey and this place looks cute from the outside and is cozy and dark inside. Bartender left the bar as we walked in then made a sarcastic quip about the tip we gave him. He definitely had an air about him that said he was too good for the customers and above it all. Great dive bar, great atmosphere. They have a awesom old juke box with a nice selection to choose from for music. They are cash only, but they do have an ATM in the bar. They're also usually open the latest of any bar in downtown Monterey which is great. The fire is awesome on cold days too. read more
