Avoid ordering online. I placed an order, arrived at the time I was told, and waited 30 MORE minutes for my order. After 30 minutes of waiting and seeing many people walk out with their food, I was told "Sorry, something wrong with the online ordering". But they had my order, so I suspect the problem was they forgot. No discount, did not return the tip (this is the problem with pre-tipping), no free fries, NOTHING. "Easily the best sub I have ever had!" is what I say each and every time I eat Algonquin Sub Shop. This time, I have a lot of new diet restrictions, so I had to build my own sub, and after my morning medication, I got a little overzealous with the ingredients when using the order online function. The crazy long list of ingredients came together just perfectly, just like all the subs on their extensive menu, and this was easily the best sub sandwich I've ever had in my 45 years on this planet. They did laugh at me a little when I picked up my crazy order, but I knew I deserved it, and appreciated their attempt to fit so many delicious ingredients onto a single sub. Normally a 4/5. Good food. Something happens to service after Covid. I went in today and waited 5 min before one of the 3 employees working acknowledged me. Once I was acknowledged I was rudely told it's 30/45 min for a sandwich. I mean no politeness or professionalism in any way. I guess this is what you get at a sandwich shop. I've driven past the Algonquin Sub Shop many times, but never stopped in until today. Their menu is really great. With 20 to choose from, there is a sandwich for everyone. I ended up choosing #18 on multigrain bread. I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. The bread was super soft and fresh, the chicken was tender, juicy and well marinated with lots of flavor, the bacon was thick and good quality, the tomatoes were ripe and even the mayo/ranch combo was good - there was also lettuce, onions, avocado and cheese on the sandwich, which all worked perfectly together. The sandwich itself is piled high so prepare to have a very filling lunch. I could have stopped at the first half, but it was too good to save for later. My Mom ordered the #14 All American and she loved hers equally. She also commented on the fresh bread and quality ingredients. Came here a bit ago but forgot to review. We got a couple different sandwiches and soups including the Texas chili rub and the Mexican salsa soup. I wasn't blown away by anything but I thought they were tasty. This place seems to have a strong little following who love the food and I can see why. It feels like unique comfort food. Ugh. Where do I begin? I was so grossed out by the time we got our food I could hardly eat. I have zero clue why this place is rated so highly. It's filthy dirty in the kitchen! How does this place pass health inspection? The grease dripping from the vent fan with the originally white caulk turning black is enough to turn your stomach. The bathroom is so gross the door is completely sticky to the touch, it smells like pure musty mold. The whole sink area is filthy. Not to mention the toxic neon pink soap to wash your hands which leaves them smelling horrible and very chemical before consuming food. My 4 year old kept saying how gross it was in there. The lemonade was so nasty and tasted nothing like lemonade. The kids grilled cheese was on a bun that was flipped inside out so the crust was on the inside, it kept flopping open and was literally dripping with grease. The ketchup bottle was sooooo disgustingly dirty and coated in crud all along the top, it's clearly never cleaned. I ordered the grilled Italian veggie which they stuck on the grill next to a bunch of raw chicken and they just pushed the raw chicken juice away with their large spatula. It seemed the other man caught that happening and suddenly my veggies went to the back part of the kitchen and I could no longer see how my food was prepared. It came from the back kitchen not the front where all the other food was being prepared. We only ended up eating the fries and I threw the rest of the food away because I was so grossed out and fearful of food poisoning so I paid almost $18 for French fries.... No one had their long hair up in ponytails or hats. I can't imagine how many stray hairs end up in food. The woman throwing raw chicken on the grill in gloves never changed her gloves as she touched everything around the kitchen. I also saw her in the same gloves bringing the garbage outside 2x. Ask for a refund or run away. This place is a nightmare! read more

This was my second visit, the first being many years ago and couldn't recall my experience? After hearing a friend who just moved to the area RAVE about this place I was excited to give it another try. I stopped in around lunch time and there was already a pretty good line started, and all the inside seating was occupied. I noticed the inside had been remodeled since my first visit and it seamed pleasant . A glance behind the counter , and I could the manager and the griller person preparing food, none of which were wearing hairnets or gloves. I placed my order for a sandwich and drink almost $14? Which was a little pricey, again second time here and couldn't remember what I had paid before. As I stood there for a few minutes it was very noticeable the process in which they receive and execute orders needed some work! The young employees struggled to keep up and stay on task and management failed at properly organizing and directing the staff. So, I told the girl behind the counter I would sit outside ? Eighty degrees and sunny..... why not? I sat outside on their fenced in patio about 10 mins goes Buy and my sandwich arrives, a little smaller than I expected for the premium price I just paid? Nonetheless I take the first bite. Bread was very good and the beef was hot and very tasty with the right amount of cheese. As I finished , I continued to glance around the patio which was very dirty, it appears they leave the table busing to the patrons? Imagine that? Food and napkins we're littered about. The building itself was in dire need of a power leash and coat of paint. The gutters sagged and we're starting to sprout small trees in side them. There was some type of exhaust vent on the roof , that looked like it had never been cleaned as it was caked with grease.) I cleared my table and headed to my car in the back lot, when I passed the garbage bin that absolutely horrified me! It was over the top and the worst invitation for rats I'd ever seen. This place May have good food, however there presentation and cleanliness is disgustingly inappropriate and should be addressed immediately! Despite me ordering in person at the counter from the cashier, the last two times I've stopped here I've been told my order was for a later pick-up time when I inquire how much longer my single sub order would take. I'm not talking about a few minutes or being picky.. I'm talking about an amount of time that has passed where people who ordered after me were well into their meal or left with their food to go already, all while I'm still standing there waiting for my food that hadn't even been started yet. I've been here a number of times throughout the last few years and was impressed each time. I've taken out of town family here and raved about it. When I have had periods of vegetarianism this is one place I will crave for their meat based sandwiches. Not tonight, unfortunately. I had the philly cheese steak and cheese fries (my wife had the south of the border) and we were both unimpressed. My sandwich was ok but hours later we're both feeling sick. The fries are mediocre...thin and soggy, and the cheese sauce has hardly any flavor. While I waited tonight I watched the employees working and glanced around the kitchen. I left feeling like this place is getting to be too grimy for my liking. The whole kitchen/sink area (which is quite visible) looks like it needs a really good deep cleanings. One employee was using his pants as a towel after going from cash register to fryer to grill. Another had long acrylic finger nails (McHenry County health department code does now allow food handlers to have these.) I love their sandwich bread so much, but unfortunately after tonight's experience I'm not sure I'll be back. read more

This place is a small town Algonquin classic and favourite of locals. This place was seen on "Chicago's Best" and is very nostalgic. Opening almost 30 years ago, and closing just last summer. In summer of 2021 Algonquin sub shop was burned though the outside was fine the inside was burnt to a crisp. Their sandwich quality is also one of the best as well. Overall I rate this store 5/5 stars for the history, the feel, and finally the quality. read more

This place is a little gem with an extensive menu. There is something for everyone. My husband got the Al Capone, I had the Here's the Beef and my son had the Phili Cheese Steak. We also ordered a side of the potato salad. Let's start with the bread. I have a love affair with bread. This bread is so fresh, you can smell it when you walk in. It's soft and the crust is light, but still has a bit of that crunch when you bite into it. The horseradish sauce on my beef sandwich was just enough to add flavor, but not overpower the sandwich. The condiments were all crisp and fresh. They did not skimp on the meat in our sandwiches. My husband enjoyed his so much he barely spoke as he ate it. The potato salad was really flavorful. It is a small serving, but is less than a buck and a half and worth every penny. The sandwich portions are plentiful compared to the prices. I had the half size and I was glad I "shared" the potato salad with my husband because I could not have finished it otherwise. read more

I nearly rated this four stars because it's a little expensive and kinda a dive in appearance. The food is so good I just had to give it five stars. My son had a BLT and had them add ham, totally works. I ordered a sandwich with grilled chicken, seared in honey, garlic and BBQ sauce. After the thick cut bacon and the melted cheddar are added this was an amazing sandwich. The generous portion of fries are sprinkled with a seasoning salt that makes them irresistible. They have a huge selection of sandwiches, salads and of course hot dogs and burgers, but get one of the sandwiches, they're awesome! Make sure you go, you can't miss this place. read more
