I found this place by luck! Talking to a Lebanese lady in the post office, she recommended this place. Went to check it out and it's seriously the best Middle Eastern food I've ever had! Love their food. Everything tastes fresh. I got a lentil soup, tabouli and chicken breast pita sandwich. The red lentil soup was delicious. It had some potatoes and carrots in it. It was mashed up in small pieces. The soup had a nice light flavor and was a great appetizer before the sandwich. The tabouli was very fresh. The parsley had a nice crisp to it and wonderful flavor. I might have added more lemon but if you don't like it too acidic, it was perfect. They serve it with a side of pita bread. My sandwich was also delicious. Had lots of greens in it and just the right amount of chicken and sauce. You can ask for a side of hot sauce if you like it spicy. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us, but we were extremely disappointed, and considering their prices, will not be returning. (And, we know prices have gone up at all restaurants due to the economic situation!) We had a "to go" order. The baba ghanoush was bland. Totally lacked seasoning and if you were blindfolded, you would not know what it was! The Hummus dip was well seasoned, and acceptable. But, the chicken shawarma was very strange, because most of the meat was crumbling, and not sliced as you would expect from the rotating spit. Flavor was okay, but not impressive for the price. We also tried the beef keftuh; it was decent, but again, not outstanding. The salad I got with the shawarma was soggy and hot because the dressing is poured on it, and is not separated from the hot items in the takeout tray. We also got "rice" with our meals, but it was not the typical rice, such as basmati. It seemed to be an instant rice or "Rice-a-roni" -like rice! No idea what it was! Compare the food here with what is found at a similar Mediterranean restaurant on Agoura Road in Calabasas...then you will see why we were so disappointed with Ali Baba. read more

So Darn Good! This is our 3rd time at Baba's and it is consistently fantastic! We drive from Ventura and stop on our way south because it is the best Middle Eastern restaurant that we've found in Ventura County. Our favorite order is: Falafel Plate and a la carte lamb and chicken kabobs. Baba's Kitchen makes their own Pita and it's like soft bread pillows to scoop up the wonderful hummus and tabouleh and wrap around the succulent pieces of meat. The falafel is the best I've ever had and it's made fresh to order. The Baba's salad that comes with the Falafel Plate is perfectly balanced and fresh. I am a local and have lived in the area for 18 years. I called to inquire if Gyro's were in the menu. I was told the did not have Gyro's but sold Shawarmas with shaved lamb. I was elated and ordered by phone. When I arrived to pick up my order, I was appalled at the filth in the establishment. The counter where you would place your purse to retrieve your wallet to pay for your order could not be accessed because a used saucer filled with half eaten chicken bones and a used napkin was sitting there. And as I looked for another location to place my purse ( to no avail) I noticed the kitchen was filthy. Food splattered on and around the burners on the stove. A dirty pot with food stuck on its side as well as inside was quite visible. I was disappointed that I placed an order by phone without ever entering the establishment. I started to tell the attendant ( who by the way was sitting at a table near the back of the establishment playing and smiling at his cell phone when 8 arrived) that I changed my mind but I felt obligated so I didn't. BTW ... I must say The attendant was super friendly and very nice but it may have been a better idea to be cleaning the tables and kitchen as opposed to playing on his phone. To fast forward, I took the shawarma home and after the first bit , I was thoroughly disappointed. It was filled with big chunks of vegetables and livery little pieces of lamb. The lamb was not the same as the lamb you get when purchasing a Gyro. It seemed to be baked lamb and was awful. So I rewrapped it an saves it for my husband because he will eat anything. He took one bite and frowned stating that it was terrible and through it in the trash . So my experience with this establishment was less than admirable. But of course that could have been a fluke, but I will not return. read more

My coworker brought in some beef shawarma leftovers from Ali Baba the other day, and I therefore established a mission to get me some of that as soon as possible. It was my first time eating there, and in general I don't really go out of my way to eat Mediterranean cuisine or anything of the like. I went with Michael S. and he thought it was hella random of me too. Either way, props to Ali Baba! A very local and homey sort of setting, very casual service, and good tasting food. I should note, however, that the owner asked Michael S. and me to move out of the table for six and move to the table for four just in case more people came in. Granted, I'm okay with that if it were likely that they would need that sort of room. But c'mon. It was almost closing time. And there was only one other party there. Their moutabal and pita was nice and light, with spicy cayenne ideas and sour afterthoughts, which we couldn't really pinpoint. Michael thought it was kind of "wine-y" while I thought it was probably vinegar. Whatever. Great appetizer. I ordered the beef shawarma plate. I thought the rice was good, but could maybe have been a little more... saffron-ey. The beef shawarma was properly seasoned and was bursting with Mediterranean-inspired flavors. And while I kind of thought it was a little overcooked, the flavor of it etched a delicious note in my mind to come back here again and try more items. The plate came with hummus and salad, both of which tasted great. Perfect consistency and flavor of the hummus, and a refreshing cucumber crunch to their salad. I think this place is more ideally a lunch option, especially for the Amgenites and Baxterds. We've been craving a Chicken Shawarma for the longest. In my past years of traveling for work in the Middle East, here and there we would run into these Shawarma stands similar to being in Mexico with their street taco stands. Exactly how the Adobada was on a spindle, the Chicken and Lamb was on a spindle. After Yelping Shawarma in the search block earlier this week Ali Baba's popped up. Sure enough I bookmarked it and made a point this weekend to venture off into distant lands to seek the Shawarma. Today, we drove 14.8 miles. Ali Baba's sure enough was located in the same shopping center as Von's in the City of Newbury Park, Ca. As we were walking up on the window they had a "People Love Us On Yelp" sticker which had me thinking this place has to be good. My wife ordered the Chicken Shawarma Plate which included Yellow Rice, Hummus (really good), Baba's Salad, Chicken, and side of Pita Bread to pretty much make your own Shawarma. I myself just ordered two Chicken Shawarma Sandwiches (sandwich only). Food was pretty good. A little different than from what i've had in the past, but still pretty good. The Pita Bread was soft, Chicken nicely marinated, and Baba Salad was green fresh lettuce with tomatoes. Overall: Friendly service, Clean facility, and delicious food. We will return. read more

It's not bad, but for the prices they demand, Ali Baba's cuts a lot of corners and delivers underwhelming food. We got the beef shawarma and the chicken curry. The flavor of the shawarma was ok, but it lacked the wonderful fatty juiciness of a good shawarma. The green curry was pretty standard, but the chicken was dry and bland. Keeping in theme, the rice was dry and a little mushy (they clearly didn't rinse it before tossing it into the rice cooker), and the salad was under-oiled and under-seasoned. Finally, the pita was clearly just cheap, pre-packaged pita and lacked the satisfying soft breadiness of a tasty pita. The hummus was the saving grace of the dish and provided some much-needed moisture. It's clear that Ali Baba's is cheap on the production side: they don't pay much attention to their cooking methods, and they don't pay much for their ingredients. And if you're demanding $16 for a plate of shawarma, you'd better deliver on that price. Is it bad? No. Disappointing? A little. Overpriced? Absolutely. read more

First and foremost, i am always impressed by persons who serve their community by engaging their skills and making prepared food available to the hungry people who might not have the slill, energy, or circumstances to prepare a meal for themselves. My wife ate the chicken kebab, it satiating to her hunger, and she was quite fond of the rice too. i had a amall apetite to begin with so i just ate the kids falafel and delicious homemade fresh chips style french fries. falafell was a good flavor and quite satisfying. We were greeted in a hospitable manner. i am a choosy eater, i would always prefer to remain hungry if faced with less than proper food. Brilliant! The best falafel outside of the Middle East and their shawarma is to die for especially with a bowl of garlic paste alongside. I hear they have a lemon soup that is spectacular as well.
