One of the few places in the bay area for San Diego style Mexican food. Rolled tacos and California burritos are my favorite.

I was really disappointed with my visit to Alejandro's Mexican Food in Berkeley. The menu board advertised a price of $15.99, but I was charged $16.63--that's more than the listed price. It felt like they were lying to customers, and it was really disappointing. I hope they address this issue If they don't fix this, I won't be returning, and I'd warn others to double-check their receipts. read more

I got the carne asada fries which has no flavor. my sister got a shredded beef taco and they put barely any meat in there more lettuce than meat. Overall I would not go back but I hope they do better for others. read more

Not sure why it got poor reviews. It has decent and authentic food with more meat choices than any Mexican restaurant in a 5 miles radius. Price is ok but if you pay cash you get a discount. read more

Siri was supposedly directing me to a honey store but she made a mistake and directed me into Alberto's parking lot. I was hungry so I decided to stop in and eat. What a great surprise. An update, since I was so deeply enthusiastic when this place opened: As has been noted by others, management (ownership?) changed in 2024, and it has been ALL downhill since then. The salsa bar was gutted. The carne asada is different and bland. There is less guacamole in the burritos. The trash can in the dining room always seems to be full. There really seems to be a lack of care all around. I would really love Aliberto's Jr. to tighten things up and return to their former glory! (I just *need* a decent San Diego style burrito every now and then.) I'll update my review again if things improve. read more

Lived in San Diego in the 90's and loved all the places that ended in *bertos. Albertos, Robertos, Humbertos, Adalbertos, Alibertos, etc. They were all the same. Same menus, same look, and same taste... and they were all delicious! I was happy to see one in the Bay Area and it did not disappoint! Got a quick Thrifty trip to Berkeley and was looking for a quick bite for take out. We saw this place and wanted Mexican food for take out. It was not too busy and I had ordered a Regular sized Carne Asada burrito and 5 rolled Chicken rolled tacos with light guacamole. We had also ordered a Horchata to go with the order. It was ready within a few minutes and I regretted not getting hot sauce at the Salsa bar next to the Beverage station. Food was very good and very filling even without the extra sauce for a kick. read more

Alibert's Jr Mexican Food is located at the Chevron Gas Station at Ashby Av & Telegraph in Berkeley. After seeing all these great Yelp reviews, I thought I'd try this place. I ordered the Chimichanga Plate w/ shredded beef. It looked really good, with beans, cheese, guac, salsa and sour cream. The meal was complete with refried beans and spanish rice. The portion was really large, and I was happy with value vs the price. The problem is....it's really salty. Considering all the 5-star reviews, is it supposed to be so salty? I'm a bit puzzled why someone would make a beautiful plate of food, offer good portions, and then ruin it by adding too much salt. I ate 2-3 bites, and had to throw it all away. Way too salty. Everything, the refried beans and rice were also salty. Also, my takeout order was served in a styrofoam tray. I thought styrofoam trays were banned. Oh well, maybe they're the "Eco Friendly" type. So, overall a 3-star experience, and that's being nice. I didn't know the food was so salty. I will not be ordering again. read more

I'm really disappointed to need to write this, but I'm hoping it helps them get back to their old selves. I used to really enjoy Aliberto's: nice portions for the price, tasty food, quickly prepared. Unfortunately the portions, taste, and correctness of the orders have been going down hill for a while now. Recently I ordered the veggie burrito, and when I got it back to work the tortilla was nearly empty, and was missing ingredients that should be in it. This kind of thing has happened my last few visits. At this point it's just in the "not good" category for me. If somebody from Aliberto's reads this: we believe in you! You've got all the components to be a top Berkeley taqueria again. We hope you're able to turn it around. read more

In my quest to try as many shrimp burritos as possible in the East Bay, I checked out recently opened Aliberto's Jr. Mexican Food. Using Uber Eats, I ordered the regular shrimp burrito, a monster burrito with shrimp (no beans), and something called a Texano burrito. The Texano burrito, believe it or not, stole the show. The tortillas from Aliberto's were superb and among the best I've had. It's like the crust of a pizza - sometimes it's an afterthought, but it's very important! I had never heard of a Texano burrito, but the description intrigued me: "Chicken, potato, and sour cream)." Wuuuuuuut? What would such a combination look like? How would it taste? I had to find out. First, the burrito also had a little bit of some sort of orange sauce (I couldn't tell if the chicken had been cooked in it or if it had been added separately) and lots of cheese. And the potatoes? They were French fries. Together, they formed this warm, cheesy, gooey bundle that is definitely craveable. Having said that, it really does benefit from the addition of salsa or any other spicy, acidic condiment, as without it the flavor profile can be a bit one-dimensional (but not in a bad way). Oh, and about those shrimp burritos ... not my favorite. The monster burrito was kind of soggy and salty, the shrimp was a tad overcooked, and the flavors didn't come together that well. The regular shrimp burrito was a bit better, but also suffered from some saltiness and overcooked shrimp. But forget about those! I'm ordering a Texano! read more

A decently priced Mexican food spot in Berkeley opening ?! I'm there. I ordered the carne asada super fries, the shrimp burrito and the monster burrito Al pastor. The staff was super nice gave me a 5 minute time estimate to complete my food. It was indeed done around the estimated time frame. There is a salsa bar close to the doorway that connects the restaurant to chevron. Let me first explain that my ideal burrito would probably have some saltiness and grease slightly seeping through the bag. The carne asada super fries had some good carne asada. The carne asada salty,not greasy at all, and a little bit on a dry side but that's fine because of all stuff on top. The fries were a bit pale and could've used more cook time. Overall I liked the dish. The shrimp burrito had a good amount of whole shrimp and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. There were big chunks of bell pepper in the burrito in one spot. I felt like all the shrimp were also in the same spot too closer to the bottom. The seasoning was a little bit too salty for me. I tried a bite of the Al pastor monster burrito and it had good flavor. Haha I personally would like it greasier but maybe it's just my strange affinity for greasy foods. read more

This place has new ownership. I liked the food from the former folks but I could see it was tough when I showed up with some other folks for breakfast burritos and the front door was padlocked. It now has new management so I decided to try it. Here are my findings and rationale for my review as of May 9, 2024. Pros: 1. The people are nice. 2. The salsa, red and green are very good. 3. Edible beans and rice. Cons: 1. A ripoff. 2. Prices increased by $2 across the board. 3. Terrible burritos. I ordered #8, the 2 beef burritos and asked for a Carnitas one in place of a beef burrito. What I got was a beef burrito that was passable with very dry meat and very little of it. The carnitas burrito was a mass of inedible junk. They should have been ashamed to give it to me. I am from San Diego and have missed SD style taco shops; take this in a "I eat at least 3 times at these places every single time I am down there" way. And then, I saw this place on Telegraph - one of the reliable chains that San Diego has to offer! Finally here! So... what's the difference compared to NorCal taco places? 1) The carne asada burritos do not come with rice and beans on board. Just meaty goodness, pico de gallo, and guac. No fru fru extras in the way. They'll add that stuff if you ask, but why? 2) They have meat packed rolled tacos smothered in guac. You can choose chicken or beef, but beef is the SD standard so get that. It is almost impossible to find these little magic goodies in Northern California. You can trick yourself and say well "flautas" and I'll reply - those are pale imitations of what is a San Diego college student midnight-3 am staple for those all night study sessions. Add extra guac to the guac and treat yourself. 3) Tons of selection and mix and match options which you can see from their visual menu (also a SD standard). 4) All the salsa bar items you could hope for at a clean, serve-yourself counter. 5) Mexi coke in a bottle. 6) Bonus points for flan and churro dessert options. The only thing missing is that the SD places tend to be open (and busy every minute) 24 hours so you can swing by after the club, after bon fire, when the weee hour munchies tag you. Craving breakfast burritos, we went last weekend for the Desayuno Burrito and Huevos Rancheros, and found them to be excellent. The steak was dry in the Huevos, but otherwise the breakfast burrito was really on point. We decided to go again and ordered two of the Desayuno Burritos, but what we got was completely different, and frankly, awful. To start off, they were probably 2/3rds the size of last week's. But eating them we realized that something was way off, they substituted old, cold french fries that were oxidized and grey -- I thought they were mushrooms at first, and then realized that they were just seemed like day old, cold fries. Adding further to this insult, the cheese was also cold and unmelted! This was such a complete 180 from the previous weekend's experience that we hope that it's just a fluke. However, probably won't come back to give them another chance. It's not like you can't see this when you're eating, so guessing they just don't care. And in this game consistency is the key to bringing people back and building trust. Otherwise service was friendly, so they got two stars. I've missed paper-wrapped burritos SO much and am only just now realizing it! Aliberto's wraps their burritos in paper, not foil, which is truly superior unless you like your burrito steamed. SF, in general, needs to catch up to LA/SD in this regard. The burritos, by the way, are huge and moderately priced :) I really came because of all the reviews referencing SD style carne asada, and was hoping that would also translate to LA-style breakfast burritos. Indeed, AND they serve breakfast all day! LA style means: grilled tortilla, eggs, hash browns, cheese -- with salsa in a plastic cup on the side. No beans, no rice, no "super" sour cream or guac, no sautéed vegetables. It was delicious and didn't disappoint! Their bean and cheese burritos are also delicioso! You're here because you want to know if this place is legit. Right? Do I think this place is authentic Mexican food? Yes, I do. Because the guy working in the back looks like my tio at the carne asada. The food is good, they have a great salsa bar, and solid drink selections. Do I think this place has the best quality meat or tortillas? No, it just doesn't compare to places like El Ultimo Baile (AMAZING food truck in the East Bay). But this place tastes like good Mexican food. I'll talk about the mini tacos because that's the last item I bought (see pictures). Get the Al pastor tacos. They are amazing here. The carne asada tacos here are also solid too. And here's the bad news...I didn't like the carnitas. I prefer crispy carnitas though, so give them a chance. Tortillas aren't hand made here; they're your typical tortilla you can find at the grocery store. They do grill them here instead of steaming, which is a plus. This spot also has a great salsa bar. Red, green, dark red, pico de gallo, pickled carrots/jalapeños/onions, and limes. You can also order grilled onions and jalapeños toreadors. The red salsa was hella spicy last time (good thing). They have jarritos and sangria señorial! Two amazing drinks to have with you Mexican food. They also have aguas frescas. Horchata and two others that I didn't bother looking at. read more

Love this place. Food quality has gone back up and service has been great. Salsa bar is fresh. Roja, verde, pico, and even pickled carrots. Tortillas are delicious and have the right amount of chew. Closest to SD taco shop feel you'll get up here. Wife likes the al pastor and I usually get breakfast burritos. Just a friendly tip to the restaurant - if you want to put the SD California burrito on the menu, the SD version usually has a combo of pico, guacamole and sour cream. Yours has more of a fajita feel to them with the peppers, onions and sauce. read more

Got the 5 we mini taco combo with drink. I chose al pastor pork and chicken. The tacos were good; flavorful and moist. I especially like the self-serve salsa bar and drinks. What's most noteworthy about this place is that it is very, very clean. read more
