This really is a true 100% authentic Italian sandwich. Not "American-Italian" but as authentic as you can get in NY and not Italy. I went on a Saturday and we waited for at least 25 minutes but all of the sandwiches on the menu looked so good it took me the entire time to figure out what to order anyways. I thought all of their signs about no substitutions or 'don't ask us what our favorite is' were pretty hilarious. There's a huge list of sandwiches on the list, if you can't find one of them without substitutions then I'm not sure what to tell you! I honestly didn't find the prices all that bad either. You are getting 100% fresh meats and cheese probably imported from Italy. I had the hard bread, they only have 2 choices on Saturday, which was totally fine by me. I live literally next door from this place and it took me 8 months to discover it, and that's only after finding it on yelp and looking for it on purpose. Yes, it's that small, crammed in between a couple other businesses, and with very limited hours - only open 11-17:30 during the week and on Saturdays. A list of 20-30 different sandwiches covering every possible combination of the freshest ingredients you can hope for in an Italian sandwich: prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, smoked mozzarella, sopressata, arugula, sun dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, capicollo, etc. Pick your bread from baguettes, sfilatino, focaccia or semolina and you're set for a real treat. This place had been on my list for a while so we finally decided to check it out on a Friday. The menu is extensive and a little daunting. I highly recommend reviewing it before you get to the deli. They have paper copies available there, but other reviews are right, you want to have your decision made before you step up to the counter. First off I'd probably eat just about everything on the menu. It all looks good and I had a hard time deciding. I'd heard the Pavarotti with its marinated artichokes was great and that's what I went in thinking I would get. Much deliberation later I decided to stick to m original plan. They have white or wheat bread and also some bread upgrade options - Semolina, Foccaia and Sfilatino. By the time we got to the counter (we went around 1:30) all the had left was white. The ran out of Foccaia with the guy right in front of us. I got The Pavarotti with hot peppers (always sweet + hot when they have the real deal - note to other delis, jalapeños are not appropriate hot peppers for a sub). Grabbed a can of soda as well. Total was just over $17 and that's why I dropped a star. The sandwich was really good, one of the best I've had in Manhattan. But nearly $20 for a sandwich and a can of diet coke in an old school deli is a bit much. I've had just as good for more in the $12 range. Only other change I'd make is eating it sooner than I did. I took it back to my office in Chelsea and the balsamic had soaked the bread pretty well. There's a bunch of other sandwiches on the menu I want to try so I'll be coming back. It's not the best value in the world so I might not go quite as often but the quality is top notch. Amazing authentic italian sandwich, and it was HUGE. One sandwich is definitely enough to share, so keep that in mind when ordering. Don't let the outspoken clerks get the best of you, give em' a taste of their own medicine and you can all share a good laugh. My only problem was the menu, it was simply too big! All of the sandwiches go by names, and at first glance (and maybe second or third), they all seem very similar. When you find your pick, don't be afraid to add to it to make it your own. Alidoro can make some of the best sandwiches you will eat in NYC. For that I give them 5 stars (4 total since its a bit of a hassle to get them), they make authentic Italian style sandwiches - all the bread, meats, cheeses, everything is fresh and top quality. The Pavoratti may be one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten, and make sure you get the Sfilitino bread, its an extra buck 50 but totally worth it. The place is very small (seating for 4-6 at most) and there is always a line so if you want to get your sandwich in under 30 min you should arrive around 11:30. Their hours of operation of are 11-430 and during the week and think that extends to Saturday but not sure. It is owned by a couple, and the wife is reminiscent of the soup nazi from Seinfeld, should you ask for something they don't have or ask for an amendment they don't like she will yell at you. There is actually a massive list of things they don't do posted in the pictures - just follow the rules and enjoy. The sandwiches are entire loafs of bread, so lunch and dinner will justify your $15 sandwich. They ONLY do call ahead orders if their 3rd employee is there, last I checked he was on vacation in Italy for 2 months. Extra props if you know a little Italian or have been there and happen to bring it up in conversation, the guy who makes your sandwiches is from Italy and appreciates it. Also, he watches TV while he makes your sandwich so be patient, it's worth it. If you work in the area def check this place out for lunch out with colleagues or friends, the sandwiches are fantastic. I usually get the sandwiches on foccacia because theirs is possibly the best I ever had, but even their basic breads are excellent. Go early or late for lunch because the line is usually out the door (completely understandable). Only complaint: It would be a perfect place, but the cashier is often rude. (I walked right passed it the first time I wanted to try it) It being small usually means there is going to be a line but use this time in line to decide what you want to order. A lot of the reviews here criticize the staff for being unfriendly. Well they do own a pretty busy spot so they don't really have time for people to take five minutes to order a sandwich. Know what you want before you get to the counter have your money ready to pay and the experience will be painless. They say when you marry your one and only, you get the whole family. This is especially true with overbearing, Italian-American clans. Just ask my wife. Or Debra Barone. Or anyone who has ever tried to declare their love for an Alidoro sandwich. Because here, the sandwiches and the staff, like your lover and their family, are a package deal. By this adage, if you're ready and willing to open up your heart to this Sullivan St. joint's tremendous creations, you should know a thing or two about lettin' the in-laws in here, as well. The Alidoro household is comprised of the no-nonsense mother hen who runs the show with an iron fist, an icy glare, and the howl of a headmistress, the man of the house who makes mouth-watering sandwiches whilst being humored by unnecessary children's films (Babe 2: Pig in the Big City, Mouse Hunt), and some dude they may or may not keep in the back Gimp-style, perhaps the black sheep, crazy uncle, bastard son, who knows? And as with any self-respecting abode, there are house rules. At Alidoro, these house rules could probably outlast a nunnery's. You must be mentally prepared to enter through that front door. You must close that door behind you or you will get called out for letting a draft into the establishment, even if the line is being pushed onto the sidewalk. You must not approach the counter without knowing your order. You must not ask them what their favorite sandwich is or if they have certain items not explicitly stated on the menu. You must not dilly-dally, attempt to engage in small talk, or show any human emotion. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. This is the understood, expected etiquette. You attempt to break this code of conduct, and Mama will throw your ass out. I've seen it happen. It's not pretty. Don't be stubborn. Do as you're told. Because if you challenge the in-laws, you will be denying yourself the most savory, ridiculously tasty sandwiches money can buy. The Matthew (prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, dressing, arugula) is all-around amazing. The mozzarella is some of the freshest you will ever taste, and it isn't even the star of the sandwich. That would be the dressing. While I have to believe the real ingredients to this secret sauce are probably some generations-old family recipe (and I wouldn't dare ask Alidoro to find out), it is most certainly balsamic-based, without that overwhelming bite that typically turns off a good deal of people. By no exaggeration, this is my perfect sandwich, the one I want to take home to my own mother, even if it is technically a dude named Matthew. Similarly, with the Romeo, the highlight isn't its smoked chicken or even the Bel Paese cheese (both which are still absolutely delicious), but rather the hot peppers. Again, on paper, this is most likely the item that pickier eaters would ask to be left off their sandwich before anything else. The same goes for the Pinocchio and its olive paste, despite being jam-packed with prosciutto, sopressata, fresh mozzarella, and sweet roasted peppers. Thus, in defending these sandwiches, and all of Alidoro's creations, don't change a Goddamn thing. Order as is and don't look back. I always get these masterpieces on Sfilatino bread (+$1.50), which is pretty much a baguette with its innards scooped out a bit to stuff in all the meats and cheeses. It is heavily floured and has a really nice pull to it once clamped between your teeth. It also happens to be as long as your forearm, which makes for a great bandleader's baton when you're celebrating scoring an Alidoro sandwich by marching down the sidewalk post-order. It also helps to more than justify the costs, which range from $8-$11.50, given that any normal human being can easily make this into two meals. If you haven't figured this out, I am not a normal human being. For me, these sandwiches rarely see dinnertime. The joint is tiny, chock full of Italian cinema posters, country-home knickknacks, and the assortment of rules inked on printer paper scattered about the room. There is almost always a line, a group of hungry, hushed, monk-like loyalists. Occasionally, there is the uninformed rogue, who brazenly treats this like some basic-bitch deli, and of course, all hell breaks loose while the rest of the crowd looks on in disgust. I probably shouldn't encourage this type of behavior a la some pageant parent on Toddlers and Tiaras, but the threat of an incident gives Alidoro some added character, a bit of Manhattan mythology. And because I am a habitual rule-follower, and I respect the hell outta these sandwiches, I happen to eat this type of shit up. Truthfully though, most of the time, there is no incident. If you're not an asshole, you will get what you want. And if you are an asshole, you certainly don't deserve a sandwich from Alidoro. At least, that's what your Italian in-laws would tell you. read more

Alidoro makes sandwiches exactly how they were meant to be: fantastic ingredients in thoughtful, intelligent combinations on high-quality bread. Unlike some places that feel the need to load up their sandwiches with every ingredient under the sun or hide low-quality ingredients under of pile of nasty mayonnaise,* Alidoro lets quality and simplicity shine. My favorites are the Romeo (smoked chicken, bel paese cheese, arugula, and hot peppers) with added eggplant caponata and the Daniela (tuna, hot peppers, fresh mozzarella, and arugula). While all of the ingredients are delicious, I especially love the hot peppers and eggplant caponata. Just thinking about them right now is making my mouth water. Yes, the lady behind the counter can be a little scary (today she yelled at people in line to stop holding the door open), but I actually prefer that kind of sassy, down-to-business attitude to the smoldering hostility I get at other sandwich shops (yeah, I'm talking about you Saltie). Just know what you want to order by the time you get to the front counter and you'll be fine. The trek down from UWS? Worth it. The occasional long wait? Worth it. The risk that I'll someday get bitch-slapped by the owner? Worth it. These sandwiches are delish! *A note for mayo-phobes like me: Alidoro doesn't use that revolting stuff in any of their sandwiches at all, including the tuna. Amen! read more

When I got an instant message that said, "I just had the best Italian sandwich in NYC" from my friend Dave, I immediately copied the Yelp review and sent it to my entire office. Within 10 minutes of receiving the initial message, I was already en route to Alidoro. As we turned down Sullivan Street, I was more excited than a kid on Christmas morning. Here I was, ready to experience one of the best sandwiches in NYC. We were peering down the street, taking bets on what the place would look like, when I saw the line coming out of a storefront. Clearly, this was Alidoro. With about 10 people in front of us, I figured this line would move fairly quickly. I checked in on foursquare and texted my friend Dave that I was eating at his suggested spot, to pass the time. Immediately he texted back with "get off your phone, they will yell at you." Yea, okay, I understand an establishment getting mad at you when placing an order and being on the phone at the same time, but this was a 20 minute wait. As the wait continued, I looked around the store and noticed this Italian eatery was filled with sass. I couldn't help but read all the signs...frankly because I had nothing better to do. Favorites include a listing of everything they don't have (tomatoes, avocado, meatballs, etc.), because God forbid you have to ask them if they have something. The other favorite is something Yelper Caryn D. is known for - asking store owners what they recommend. At Alidoro, a sign clearly states not to ask for their recommendations. Not too hungry? A sign advises you not to ask for a half-sandwich either, because they won't do it. And these aren't signs, but more like if you copied and pasted this review into a Word Doc and printed it out. As someone who studied for 4 months in Florence, I understand the snarkiness of Italians - after all, one day at Benetton, I accidentally grabbed an extra small shirt and a saleswoman said there is no way I'd fit into that. But please, this was just overkill. It was finally my turn at the counter (and I swear, not exaggerating, this had been about a 25 minute wait). I ordered my sandwich, the Lucia, which was prosciutto, smoked mozz and sweet peppers. It was already killing me that this was costing $9.50, but then I found out they were out of bread. Instead of just handing me the foccacia bread or some other fancy bread they had that was priced at $1.50 more, they charged me, simply because they misjudged the amount of white and wheat bread they give out (and this was before 2 p.m.). So now I'm waiting for the man to make my sandwich, and as annoyed as I was at this point, I did like the fact that he was interacting with me and saying things like "in Italy we do this....in Italy we do that" (but this also explained the long wait). Granted though, his inspiration from sharing these cultural bits was from the movie he was watching in the corner. But no, Alidoro clearly told me that they don't have tomatoes in the snarky sign on the wall. I finished half a sandwich because that was all someone could physically eat. I came back to the other half later in the day but the prosciutto was slimy (I didn't refrigerate it, but this was 3 hours later) and had to toss it since slimy meat grossed me out. I think $11 is a lot for a sandwich, and while it was huge enough to make two meals, who wants to eat the same sandwich twice in one day (except if it's the best sandwich on Earth)? If it's just okay, I'd rather spend $6 and buy half of a mediocre sandwich - at least I wouldn't feel like I was tossing my money down the toilet. Alidoro! I die! I die! You have overwhelmed me with perfection and now I am dead! I have amazing coworkers who told me to go here for lunch or I would be fired. That's not true, but they did point me in Alidoro's direction and I could not be more grateful. You know when something is so good that the entire process becomes a blissfully rosey experience? If not, go to Alidoro's and you will know what I'm talking about. The walk through SoHo's cozy streets leads you to this Sullivan gem. The line out the door signifies you have arrived at an institution, and you patiently take your spot as images of expertly prepared gourmet sandwiches dance through your head. The wind gently floats by as you and other patrons cling to your scarves, partly due to the chill and partly out of anticipation. Once you get inside the store, the soothing yellow of the walls and the aroma of the freshest ingredients sends you lazily daydreaming about some fantasy Tuscan life. You are quickly snapped out of it when, finally! You have reached the front of the line and the lady behind the counter is beyond peeved at having to wait for you to come out of your happy little coma. You politely, quickly, and clearly give her your order - being sure to pronounce everything correctly and knowing better than to ask for any substitutes. You have a delightful chat with Walter about the smells of his childhood growing up in Italy, the croissants he used to get from the baker next door in the wee hours of the morning as he and his friends were leaving the club. You bask in his nostalgia as he slices, stacks, and prepares the perfect sandwich - just for you. You pay in cash, not at all minding the $12 or so you dish out. You happily turn to leave, but not before shouting "Ciao!" at the door. (You simply can't help it at this point.) You go outside and breathe in the fresh fall air, and on the walk back to the office you lazily bring yourself back to reality and feel the giddiness of realizing the best is yet to come: now you get to actually eat the damn thing. This is how magical my first visit to Alidoro's was. The wait, the attitude, the strict enforcement of the menu, none of that matters. If you get hung up on the things you find "wrong" then you won't be able to enjoy the gem that is Alidoro's. This, my friends, is a good life lesson. Stop and smell the roses every once in a while.
