The feeling I had finding Alidoro was probably very similar to what Augustus Gloop felt when he entered the chocolate factory.

This is for the Bowery Market location. I've had Alidoro sandwiches before and loved them. But today we stopped by the Bowery market location for the Enzo and it was really terrible. I hate saying it, but unfortunately it was true. The fresh mozzarella was non-existent, the bread was soggy despite eating it with 2 minutes of being served, and the flavour was just a bit off. For $16 it is was easily the worst value I have had in a long time. I used to love their sandwiches but this was so disappointing I don't imagine I will ever be back. 5 stars for the nice girl who served us - but that is the only good thing about the whole experience. read more

I'd agree that these folks are the Soho equivalent of the soup nazi. The service was so terrible that I couldn't enjoy my sandwich, which was really expensive for what it was -- $14 for an admittedly large sandwich, but it wasn't even the best sandwich I've ever eaten. OMG. Best subs in the city. They are only open for lunch so I can't really sneak down here, but when I can get the chance I'm on e C train to Alidoro. The place is tiny and there is usually a line out the door. Lots of character and attitude in the space, and the (husband and wife??) team that make the sandwiches obviously put a lot of love into every sandwich. I love the Michelangelo, and the bread is fantastic. You can't go wrong with Amy of the sandwiches on the menu. The comparison to the Soup Nazi isn't that far off, but the owner and proprietor is still open to friendly conversation provided you don't ask for anything unreasonable with your order. The sandwiches are pricey, but they're some of the most delicious I've had in NYC. The menu is varied enough that even if you don't find "your" sandwich right away, you're sure to on a later visit, so don't give up if you feel like you miss the mark on your first try. read more

was it because I was starving? was it because it's close? or was it just because its good? it was because it's good. a friend of mine, when found out where I am staying while back in the city, said, "if I knew you were staying down there, I would have had you bring me a sandwich!!" so after his rave reviews, I decided to check it out what the alidoro fuss was about. and yes, it's a yummy fuss about. ok, there is a bit of oil from the artichokes and sun dried tomato varieties of fillers but I kinda think that's what made the sandwich good (am I allowed to say that?). however, I did not have a choice of bread since we went at 2pm but I would rather freshness in my bread so it's ok, I forgive you, alidoro. the mozzarella was very good and fresh as well as the eggplant. so all in all, I have to say "alidoro, I adore you." read more

My favorite Italian sandwiches in New York. When I worked in SoHo I was here almost weekly. Brusk counter service; know what you want before you get to the front, have your cash ready and pay quickly to avoid the wrath of the sandwich masters. Don't go too late; I've been there when they'd run out of bread. The menu is overwhelming but you really can't go wrong. Huge italian sandwiches in the heart of soho. A sandwich can easily shared or put away later for dinner. Good choice of breads which they smear a very tasty balsamic dressing on and then pile on with various toppings.....my favourite is the dino because I'm a sucker for smoked mozzarella. Service can be a little terse or gruff at times let's say it ain't subway but the sandwiches are here are made with love. read more

Best sandwich shop in the city. When I worked on Wall St., my team would delegate one person to go there to get sandwiches for all of us. This is still one of my mandatory stops whenever I go back to the city. All the ingredients are the freshest, I specially like the sandwiches w/ their perfectly roasted peppers and arugula. Alidoro was previously named Melampo. I used to work in the area years ago and stopped in for sandwich today. Hate to say it......kind of a let down. I really don't care if they have attitude, the original owner Alessandro could be really rude. (I actually saw a customer jump across the counter at him because he refused to answer a question.) You would put up with the negatives because the sandwiches were incredibly tasty, great combinations of ingredients, perfect breads and huge portions. Unfortunately today's sandwich fell flat on two biggies: foccacia bread was ok, not great, and greatly reduced amount of the ingredients. The original sandwiches would have almost a pound of fresh mozz and half a pound of whatever italian meat was on that particular sandwich. Hey- I know times are tough, but to charge 13 bucks for a shadow of the original intent is kind of bummer. After eating a Melampo sandwich you needed a nap. I'm not into Alidoro. I don't like the negative focus in here. The proprietor has actually yelled at me for trying to make a delivery order at lunchtime (except they claim to deliver), asking for a diet coke (hello, this is America), asking for a sandwich on foccacia (which they claim to offer)... Come on. It's just not nice. Yes, the sandwiches are OK, but they aren't my cup of tea totally. Most of them are ham-based, there is only 1 vegetarian option and a couple with chicken... but it's not normal grilled chicken, it's deli sliced smoked "chicken breast" which a) isn't even chicken and b) is tasteless. The best part of Alidoro to me is the yummy balsamic vinegar that they import from Italy and sell for $5 less than Gourmet Garage. read more

I'll start by saying I NEVER take the time to write bad reviews. However, after the encounter with the woman who took our order and owns the place, I had to. She was super rude, condescending and an overall bitch to my boyfriend. I had to turn away otherwise the 'Brooklyn' in me would've come out and it would've been a huge scene. Alidoro has truly mastered the art of the Italian sandwich. Every sandwich is made to perfection. Nothing is just thrown together here. The menu is clearly thought out making every one a delicious combination. I have tried most of them and not one has disappointed. All the meats and other ingredients are of the highest quality. Each time I came here the people working were extremely rude to me, made me feel rushed and uncomfortable. I get it that theyre busy and dont have to rely on customer service. This sandwich shop has a special place in my heart. My roommate plans her Saturdays around "delicious sandwich time," and let me tell you, going with her really adds to the experience. She has a reverence for this place, the owner, the menu, the bread, and the ritual eating of the sandwich in the park a few doors down. I usually let her order for me because she loves it so, and I'm always happy with the selection. The balsamic-soaked bread makes it feel like each bit is au jus, and the fresh mozz and prosciutto makes me salivate just thinking about it. Definitely worth going to. I read reviews on other sites and since I was going to be in the neighborhood, decided to that was the place to try. Read the menu, and showed my husband so I would get his order right, as I was bringing the sandwiches home. Good thing. It is a small place, had a line of people who ordered sand which by name, what kind of bread was preferred, pay and step aside. Yeah, like the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, but in a small store you need to be efficient. And they are. The ingredients are top notch. I ordered the Lucia and the prosciutto was good quality. A lovely couple was sitting outside devouring their sandwiches, so we thought we'd give it a try. Had the Pinocchio and thought it was delicious. The olive paste and the sweet peppers were overwhelming flavors though so I would probably get it without it next time. This sandwich with focaccia bread will run you about $14 which is on the pricey side for sandwiches. However, they literally slice the prosciutto in front of you which is great.
