The best part was the bread - sturdy, chewy, perfect for grabbing the juice from the peppers and the oil from the meat. Bigger is better, and speaking of bigger, I am a pretty big eater and I was only able to eat half in one sitting. Of course I had a bag of rosemary garlic chips to accompany it, so that might've done it. As for the sandwich, the sopressatta and prosciutto were fresh and thinly sliced, *sigh* perfect. The mozzarella was soft and the taste of sweet peppers worked well with the saltiness of the olive paste/tapenade that was spread on the bread. I spent $20 for the sandwich, a bag of chips and a pellegrino. A little steep for lunch, but still I have zero complaints. It was delicious and satisfied the exact craving I had. The menu has a ton of options (30+ sandwiches) but they are also accommodating and will make a special combo if you want to substitute any ingredients. There is not a lot of seating (two small tables with 3-4 chairs) and a small table outside when the weather is nice. I think most people just get their orders to go. They only had one worker when we came on a Saturday afternoon and the wait wasn't terrible (10 minutes?) but I can see it getting backed up with orders when it gets busy. Overall...great sandwiches! There are several of these shops around nyc now-- this was the first, and in my opinion, the only one to go to. I used to go here over 20 years ago when Alessandro used to own and run it. It took as long as it took to get your sandwich, you were not allowed to make any changes to anything on the menu, and you were grateful to wait in line and get it. Yes, he could be known for being cranky sometimes, but if you got on his good side, he would always slip you a free cookie in your bag that you'd find when you got back to the office. He was a true artist. The mozzarella was buttery delicious, the focaccia was fluffy crisp and flavorful, and there was always a Fellini film playing on his tv, a cat in the corner, and of course, a huge line. Then it was taken over by his nephew Walter,( I think his nephew?? Maybe just someone else??) anyhow, notably cheerier, though the sandwiches were just as delicious. It then became a bit of a chain around town, and I tried another location a year ago or so, maybe near Rockefeller center. and was disappointed and underwhelmed. I came back to this original location recently, and was delighted to see many of the original posters and decor still in tact, with a long lunch line just as before-- it brought me back. I'm not sure who is running this location now, (I didn't see Walter on the day I was there), but I can share that the sandwich (my usual- a Cabiria on focaccia), really did taste nearly as good as I had remembered it from over 20 years ago- though alas, no surprise cookie. read more

To go with another "foodie" cliche - if the best purveyors tend to just let the quality of their ingredients shine, then make sure to wear shades, because Alidoro just might blind you. Like a Vivaldi concerto, each moment is a sensory indulgence; every bite a harmonious blend of virtuoso composition and execution. To call it a symphony for one's tastebuds is simply not accurate enough - although if a sandwich can bring music to one's ears, this one would do so in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. In a city filled with world-class eats and no shortage of elite sandwiches, it's a rare occurrence to find an offering that distances itself from its peers by such a large margin. Indeed, this small shop is playing in the big leagues - there are plenty of famous choices in the $12-15 range (ie, a certain kosher-style establishment not too far East of here), but make no mistake - this is as satisfying, inspiring, and enlightening as it gets between two slices of bread (scratch that... between two slices of heaven). The smoked mozzarella on the Pavarotti sandwich is the stuff little curds of whey dream about becoming. Line is usually out the door at lunch -- and rightfully so.
