Stilwell Plumbing & Heating in Brandy Station, VA for an estimate. Their man came out on January 27, took photos and notes, and told me we'd hear from them soon. After not hearing back from Stilwell for a week, my wife called and spoke with one of their employees, Nikki, who again said we'd get an estimate soon. We did, and my wife again called back to say we'd like to go ahead with the work. That was the last we heard from Stilwell until, on February 22, Kelly called again to say we were going with the first contractor because we hadn't heard from Stilwell. Nikki claimed she had left two messages on our phone number. We had no messages on our business, home or mobile numbers. Today my wife received an emailed invoice in the amount of $334; $105 to compensate Stilwell for pulling a county permit and a $229 "restocking fee," because they had ordered the water heater and were returning it. They were being charged a restocking fee, and were passing it on to us. Note that not once did we receive phone calls FROM Stilwell, nor did we receive email communication until this invoice arrived. My wife immediately called and asked what number Nikki had left the messages on. Nikki read back a number ending in 4577. One of ours ends in 4572. None of our other numbers are close to that. When she pointed out that the error was on Nikki's part and that we were basically being charged for her error, she was told we'd have to pay the fee or Stilwell would not release the county permit. Only one contractor can hold a permit on an address at a time. A call to the first contractor confirmed that they were unable to pull a permit for this reason. We had no way of knowing they were going ahead with the work order. Our old tank is showing rust, so we had to move on this. We'll have to pay over $300 to get Stilwell Plumbing to release the permit, yet Stilwell's employee admittedly called and left messages at the wrong number. I'm slack-jawed at the utter disgrace with which this company handled our call for service. Despite admitting the error, they refuse to back off on the charge. I hope that $334 makes your wallet full, Mr. Stilwell, because it hasn't done anything good for your name.

John from Top Notch came to our house, observed the washer failing to complete a cycle multiple times with the same error code and listened to our concerns. After leaving to research the problem he left a voice mail later that day saying that he had consulted a colleague and suggested that we were just loading it incorrectly, he then described in detail how to properly load a washing machine. For context, we had been using this washer for three years without issue before it suddenly started failing mid-cycle, we are also both in our mid/late thirties so we have some experience doing our own laundry. We decided to go back to Sterling Appliance who believed us when we said there was a problem and they replaced the board with the sensor. Unsurprisingly actually performing the repair was more effective than gaslighting us about it and the washer is back to normal

Finally, we had some clogged toilets, showers, and sink drains that needed to be addressed. We had a big mess on our hands! We called a number of companies but were impressed by Paul's (owner) honesty, patience, and ability to explain the issues as well as his treatment/restoration plans in layman's terms. His estimate was the most competitive of all the companies that bid on the jobs. Paul and his crew began the work immediately and was very thorough in each step of the mold remediation process, building containment walls and bringing in heavy equipment to prevent the mold from spreading throughout the house. He also tackled the toilet flooding issue and ripped out the flooring and ceiling and worked patiently and diligently with us throughout the USAA homeowner's insurance claims process to plan out the water restoration and rebuild process. Paul and his crew performed to our standard and made all nitpick adjustments we requested and we were so impressed with his work we asked him to build us a laundry chute from the master bedroom closet upstairs. In addition, we hired Paul to paint our daughter's bedroom and bathroom as well. The duct and trim work turned out amazing for the chute and Paul was super thorough in his team's drywall and paint work. He is a perfectionist and was very tough on the crew to get every detail right. Overall, my wife and I were pretty impressed with his frequent communication with us and his professional appearance and quality of work throughout the projects. He was super nice to the kids and my mother and went the extra step to ensure the site was clean at all times and prepared us well in advance for certain projects that would temporarily lead to inconvenience (i.e., floors drying, electric panel off, water temporarily disconnected). We highly recommend Better Restoration and will surely call upon their services in the future!

They were friendly, courteous, & understanding the urgency of the situation, told me that one of their staff would definitely show up for me, probably in early evening. The gentleman (Matt) & the office both kept me apprised of his estimated arrival time, & arrive on time he did. Used a portable shop-vac to suck up as much flood water as possible, quickly diagnosed the problem, installed new drain equipment, & helped me with a couple of other things (I'm somewhat disabled). He couldn't have been more personable or competent. And keep in mind this was after hours, like around 7 p.m. Due to my particular situation, he did suggest (but definitely not PUSH) their twice-a-year maintenance plan, which I jumped at since I am now a widow & everything is now up to me. For $499 they come twice a year to check/clean/repair indoor/outdoor heat pump system, as well as check/clean/flush the water-tank system. Works for me. All in all, the after-hours visit & all the work he did + the new maintenance plan came to $833. Fine with me. Able is now my new HVAC company. K&M, after 30 years of being a loyal customer, lost me. (Update: To be completely fair, K&M did call me back at 8 a.m. this morning (7/6), apologized & said that they were closed Friday for the holiday, but that they were happy that I found someone to come & resolve my emergency, for which I thanked them.
