Earlier this year I hired Eco Performance Builders install a new heat pump system, remove my old gas furnace, relocate equipment into the attic, replace all ductwork, remove existing attic insulation, air-seal the attic, and eventually reinstall insulation. The experience was outstanding from start to finish. What really set this company apart is that they actually performed proper Manual J load calculations to size the system--something almost no other contractor I contacted was willing to do (load calculations are code required by the way). Every other quote I received assumed a system size based purely on square footage and would have resulted in a dramatically oversized system. Instead, this team took the time to measure, assess, and design a system tailored specifically to my home's demand. They even performed a blower door test to quantify air leakage--another thing no one else offered. As a result, I ended up with a 2.5-ton heat pump. Meanwhile, all other companies wanted to replace what was there (4-ton) or go even higher (5-ton). One company wanted to put in a 100k BTU furnace which is absurd. Their design work was thoughtful and meticulous. The Manual J and Manual S calculations they did ensured that the system was sized properly including duct sizes and lengths. They showed attention to detail with locating and aiming registers to reduce duct lengths (less energy loss due to being in the unconditioned attic) and to improve comfort (limiting air blowing on you in bed). They also took care to locate the ducts so they can bury them in the future attic insulation as much as possible. The on-site crew was excellent--friendly, respectful, and professional every day. They kept the workspace clean, coordinated work around my partner's daytime sleep schedule, and were incredibly flexible with scheduling overall. I've had to push back adding attic insulation multiple times so I can do a few attic projects first, and they've never complained or made it an issue (I still am not ready and they are fine with it). The resulting system has been working great since they installed the heat pump and air sealed in May. The system is basically silent and my house has been quite comfortable. I'm pretty sure the system has been more efficient than my old furnace based on my energy monitoring system that measures current to the unit and PG&E bills from last year, and this is without attic insulation. Regarding cost, you would think that EPB would be significantly more expensive especially considering they will do the proper design work. However, I got a few quotes additional quotes and EPB actually end up significantly cheaper than all other companies that didn't include any real design work! In short, this is the only company I found that actually does things the right way, prioritizing proper design and customer satisfaction. I thought this would hurt the bank but it didn't. We just had them do an assessment of our home and improve the HVAC system and insulation. They moved our ventilation duct work from the crawlspace under the house to the attic and revamped out entire HVAC including replacing our heater with a heat pump. On the construction side, they were awesome. They cleaned up before 4pm every day so we had the home to ourselves every night and even offered a portable AC while we had none in the house. The crew was friendly and professional, but also having a bit of casual fun and good times while working here. A crew that is having some fun while getting work done is always appreciated. They were also just nice and amenable to some of the changes we wanted to make mid way though (such running a doorbell wire and adding wifi to the system). Once they finished... it was a MAJOR improvement. They listened to our needs and it really shows. We had a not-that-old-but-high-end Carrier Infinity system previously and yet this is miles better. I have temp sensors throughout the house and I can definitively say the house is MUCH more stable temperature wise, and all the rooms are right in our comfort zone. Also as I watch our power usage... Its using WAY less power. As in if the house wasn't so pleasant (and I can feel cold air in the ducts), I might be concerned it wasn't running. (Also we cant hear the HVAC running, which is great.) Now the hard part of this project, and a major concern for us. My office... It was always hot (85+F usually) and we wanted to make sure that was taken cared of in this project. But it has a high load (me and my equipment) and faces the sun much of the day, so that's a harder problem. And they tackled it. My office is right were I want it (under 74) and right in line with the rest of the house. So can I recommend them? Yes. Without hesitation. We went with their design and don't regret it. You might think that there can't be any company with this many high reviews, and I thought it was unusual too. Until I called EPB, talked to them, met with them and dealt with them. Tami, Kyle and all the techs were beyond friendly, extremely knowledgeable, communicative, competent, professional and fair. They replaced our 20 year old HVAC ducting that had been damaged by rodents, going so far as to even remove waste and garbage left by the original contractors decades ago. They replaced elbows and other fittings to improve air flow too. And as further proof of their integrity, Kyle declined to give me a bid to replace the furnace noting that it was still in working order so he advised me to just wait the 2 to 10 years until it failed. And as icing on the cake, Kyle is the first person at any HVAC company that has ever mentioned "Manual J", the hallmark of measuring and determining a proper system. I replaced my 29 year old gas furnace and AC unit with a Fujitsu heat pump in my 1955 year old, 1700 sq ft. home. EcoPerformance removed all of the old insulation and ducting, did a super thorough sealing of any gaps and voids, moved the new inside unit up into the attic and replaced all the ducting. The teams involved (insulation, and the HVAC equipment install) were on schedule, neat, competent, good at communicating, and a pleasure to work with. Ditto, in re 'behind the scenes' staff - quick responses to questions, excellent communication on logistics, clear billing with no surprise, etc. etc. if you are considering a heat pump system in the Bay Area, it may or may not save you money; I won't know for sure until I've had the system for a year, but the heat pump's massive efficiency is offset by PG&E's very expensive electricity rate. That said, we've just had almost a week of 90-100 degree and my house is really comfortable. It's subjective, but it feels like every room in the house is in good balance for the airflow, and all the sealing/insulation has made it...maybe 5%-7% quieter? I certainly didn't expect the latter! read more

This is a long overdue review for the great work that the team at Eco Performance Builders performs. We purchased a very old home in Orinda 5 years ago where everything leaked (no insulation, single pane windows throughout, windows never fully closed). We brought in Eco Performance to do an audit and provide suggestions. Kyle came out and was super knowledgeable and walked us through suggestions. We knew we were going to do a remodel, so we decided to defer any improvements until we were ready. During the middle of COVID an opportunity came up where they were available to help us install a heat pump unit in our upstairs level where our bedrooms were. Since we had no insulation in our walls and roof, and most of our windows didn't open, we were desperate to get something installed before the summer heat but weren't quite ready to do our full remodel. They did an amazing job sizing the heat pump for the long term and not just brute forcing an oversized unit just to make the sale like other companies we spoke to. They are truly invested in the long-term plan for efficiency, comfort and performance which I really appreciated from Kyle. We finally kicked off our renovation a year later and were ready to install the second heat pump for our lower level about 2 years later in late 2021 and returned in spring 2022 to reroute some ducts due to the remodel. Both heat pumps have been awesome. Aside from Kyle's knowledge, experience and honesty, they also have one of the best crews we've dealt with. Our renovation wasn't easy and we've seen our fair share of good and not so great contractors. But Eco Performance's crew was fantastic. Jorge was our main contact for all the onsite work. He and his team were equally knowledgeable. Everyone knew exactly what their role was. If you asked any of them a question they each spent time to talk to you with patience and knowledge and made sure there was follow up. You could tell they were all very competent and skilled. By far they have been one of the top 1 or 2 contractors we have worked with over the course of our 1+ year remodel. If you want a company that is truly invested in making your comfort a priority while prioritizing energy efficiency and performance, Kyle and the rest of the team including their customer support staff are excellent. Totally understand why Eco Performance Builders gets 5-stars. We wanted a complete HVAC re-do (new unit, handler, ducts, etc). We got quotes from 5 companies. EPB were not the cheapest (and they openly and honestly told us this before we even got a quote), but they were by far the most knowledgeable and most invested in doing the job 100% right. Other companies quickly walked thru our home, suggested we use our old, inefficient duct system, install a new heat pump, and call it a day. This might suit some homes, but we wanted to make sure our investment would be efficient, eco-friendly and not need constant repairs/upgrades in the long run. EPB sent over their Engineer, Kyle, who spent the majority of the day in and under our house, in the attic, assessing the ducts, system, air handler, and electric as a whole. There was no "sales" pressure, but rather, information on how our current system performs and what our options would be if we went with EPB. We ultimately chose them because they had the knowledge, were exceedingly thorough, and had the science, education, expertise and tech to back it up. The team, led by Alberto, was amazing. They knew exactly what needed to be done each day, kept us informed every step of the way -- no surprises, and quality work. The communication was outstanding, which makes a huge difference when you're working with a company on a major project. They did not cut any corners, and in fact went above and beyond what was required to make the system look and perform to our expectations. They exercised a lot of care to avoid any damage while working in our home, and left it looking better than it was before they came. Kyle Bosworth carefully evaluated our home, including ductwork and insulation, to determine an appropriate heat pump solution. He provided a detailed bid, which, when all elements were taken into account, was in line with other bids, and answered all my questions. We were happy to have an expert who thought through what was needed. We were very impressed with Kyle Bosworth's knowledge and expertise, the care he took to evaluate the house with testing, and willingness to answer a lot of questions--which continued long after we signed the contract. Eco was able to schedule the work when it worked for us. The work was performed competently, quickly and cleanly. The Eco insulation team, headed by Paul, was efficient and courteous, despite working in hot, tight spaces. Ryan Bosworth and the installation team were all polite, hard-working, and competent, and the work moved quickly. If asked, they took the time to explain what they were doing and how the system worked. Ryan followed up with respect to the Fujitsu control panel that did not work properly, and replaced it. We are very happy with our new heat pump for heating, and look forward to having it next summer for cooling. When replacing a gas furnace with a heat pump, please be aware that costs on the Internet for heat pump equipment alone are not representative of the true cost. The actual cost will depend on your home. For example, our old asbetos-wrapped ducts needed to be replaced. Our 1920 walls had no insulation, which is needed to really improve how it feels inside, and the attic insulation was old and thin. In our home, we had to replace knob & tube wiring to allow insulation to be pumped in the walls. Some HVAC companies will give a bid to install a heat pump, perhaps with ducts, but will not assess your home's other needs. I figured that in transitioning from a gas furnace to a heat pump HVAC system (heating, cooling, MERV13 air filtration), it would make the most sense to find the most knowledgeable and skilled installers as possible, since the technology is considerably different than my existing antiquated system. I didn't want an installer that just found out about heat pumps last year- I wanted an in installer that understands them inside out. After getting my heat pump installed by them, I really can't think of another installer that's in the same league. Here's why: -Leading up to the install, they carefully listened to my needs and long term strategies for the house. I'm fully electrifying the house and have a long-term goal to get to net zero, by eventually powering everything from solar. Kyle was amazing in that he was both personable and extremely knowledgeable regarding building science strategies. He was able to assist us in getting the most optimal configuration that fit our budget. -A home performance test (blower door test) was run as standard procedure and the system was specced according to this value- this is a huge deal that lots of other HVAC shops overlook in an effort to save time and money on their side. Having a properly sized system will save us money throughout the system's life span because it's more efficient to run than a system that's oversized. Since the test showed the house was more airtight than originally thought, we were able to size down our system, which saved us almost $1000 on the original quote right off the bat. -During the install, both Jorge and Abby were extremely personable and helpful. All of the crew were extremely friendly, professional, and I was happy to have them in my house. -Post install, everything is installed and working exactly as was described, and as I imagined. The folks from Eco Performance Builders came highly recommended by other clients. But I have to add my own happy experience with my 1950's home. I agree with other reviews about the patient, thorough, scientific assessment and about the hard-working, friendly, easy-to-host team. You can tell that the company ethos is about excellence in relationships as well as quality workmanship. I was happy also to get to work with smart, terrific women on the team, who made it easy to communicate my priorities. The men were also great; it's not a macho oriented culture. Drywall subs were messy, but the regular crew cleaned up every day and gave considerate warning when they needed to turn off power or water. Most installers hand you off to an asbestos abatement subcontractor, if needed, but I didn't like what I heard from those contractors about leaving ducts with asbestos in the walls. Eco Performance Builders coordinated with their asbestos contractor and knew how to get them to remove those ducts completely. I needed that because I didn't know the language or the realistic options related to asbestos removal. In my two-apartment house, it was a big job to change the two heating systems and the hot water system. As predicted, it took about three weeks, working every weekday. There were decisions along the way of where to place heat pumps, ducting, vents, and aspects of drywall repair. I appreciated having input on those things. They did the extra work it sometimes took to place things where I wanted them. I recommend being available for consultation especially at the beginning so you can indicate your preferences. Some things cannot be determined until they are working on-site. The crew was patient with me when I needed to deliberate. Do plan ahead and have your home assessed if you want to do this work in the next year. You'll get a lot of information to digest that's specific to your home. Absolutely stellar experience with Eco Performance Builders, with Kyle as the shining star. In 2016, we hired EPB to come check out our house and provide recommendations. Kyle patiently and thoroughly walked us through the current status of our insulation and air sealing (horrific), with visible evidence and measurements we could see ourselves. This assessment cost $500 but was worth it. He then put together several options to upgrade the house. We ended up doing a large project that included attic, floor, and wall insulation, air sealing, duct replacement, water heater replacement, hydronic heating, LED lighting, and more. We could not be happier with every aspect of the changes. After the heatwave of 2020 and being locked indoors during the fire smoke, we chose to hire EPB again to add a heat pump (like traditional AC, this works to cool the house), and we were again really happy with the results. All this again came with detailed descriptions and evidence that showed us exactly what had improved and how much (60% heating load reduction in our case). Throughout every step of the process, every member of EPB was considerate and respectful, but Kyle has really stood out. He is not only clearly thoroughly educated and trained, but he has a gift for patience and has always taken the time to completely and clearly answer all my questions. Even just this week I asked if I should consider changing electricity plans, and he sent me a detailed letter with his thoughts -- years after completing the work for us! Bill was also truly great and quickly sprang into action to come to our house and fix an issue with a melted plastic part, also years after work was done. Like any large project, of course there were some hiccups. They gave us some buttons to keep near sinks, to press to try to get hot water to that area quickly, but they don't work very well -- oh well. We also had to negotiate at one point because our front doorknob broke during all the comings and goings of the workers, but we managed to reach a reasonable compromise on who would pay for it (I believe EPB sent someone to fix it). Simply the Best! Background: After last year's heatwave I did not want to experience another night of it being 91 inside my house. My house was built in 1932 in Richmond and partially remodeled in 2006. I've owned it since 2012. Some work was ok. Some work was very shoddy, especially in the attic. I had an oversized gas furnace in place and I wanted air conditioning badly. But I realized it was likely the last step in making my house energy efficient. I needed to start with attic insulation at the least. My own background includes being a finish carpenter and remodeling contractor for 15 years. I currently am a librarian. I say this to let others know that I know good work when I see it and good workers when I see them! I also excel at research. And even I got overwhelmed by the amount of info I had to sift through. So I turned to BayRen for an energy advisor to help me. They had 3 contractors listed and I contacted them all. Just seeing Eco's website was enough for me to want to talk to them. I contacted them and Kyle came over to my place to do an energy evaluation and estimate. He was incredibly thorough and went over the options for me. I knew within 15 minutes that this was the guy I wanted to work with. Kyle recommended two options. A central air conditioning option and a mini-split option. I went with the second option. They completely re-conditioned my attic and insulated it. And installed a heat pump and three mini-splits that fit the needs of my 1200 sq. ft. house. I really could not be more pleased with the quality of their work! My home temps now go up and down in a range of about 5 degrees. I don't have to use my units nearly as much as I thought I might. I used to have the turn on the heat every morning. Most days now I wake up to a 70-degree house no matter the temp outside. I liked them so much I had them come back and condition my crawl space, which will now stay at the same temperature of my house. Eco Performance Builders (EPB) just finished (1) air sealing our attic and crawlspace, and (2) equipping our two-story home with a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) system. It's made a huge improvement! Our house was somehow both (a) drafty, like most 1900s-era Bay Area homes, and (b) stuffy/musty, with a bit of a lingering odor from a previous owner who was a smoker. We knew it needed help when we bought it. I'm an air quality scientist by profession, and this firm is the real deal. I called around to the indoor air quality professionals I know, and EPB was one of three Bay Area firms they recommended. We decided to go with EPB on the basis of some specifics, and we are incredibly glad we did. Now we don't have drafts, the air is clean and fresh, and the living areas are so much more comfortable. You might not believe the difference that air sealing the horizontal planes can make --- attic floors and crawlspace "ceilings" --- but that is where a lot of dirty air seeps in, vertically. Then, there's the benefit of the HRV system. You can't hear it, and you can't feel any breeze. But everything smells and feels like you've left the windows open, only better, because the HRV is also filtering the air that it brings in. Even though so many cracks have been sealed, there's no more need to leave the windows open, and so there's that much less dust and noise coming into the house from outside. So we sleep and breathe easier. We can't thank Ryan, Kyle, and the whole crew at EPB enough. Kyle came and did the blower-door test, ran the Manual J calcs, and then (for weeks and weeks) patiently and thoughtfully fielded a truckload of anxious, detailed, and probing questions, even the kind of questions you only get from a dad in the middle of the night whose baby isn't sleeping, and who knows (or thinks he knows) just enough to be dangerous. Ryan, and the crew who worked onsite with him, were all exceedingly clean, super courteous, and very professional. They HEPA-vaccumed at the end of every day, and thoughtfully worked around our infant daughter's nap schedule. They handled the business of locating vents in the right places, running the ductwork with minimal impacts, and generally making all the pieces connect. We were 100% comfortable having them work in our home. Also, I'm the kind of guy who crawls around in attics and crawlspaces to QA/QC, and I can vouch for the quality of the work that Ryan supervised in all aspects: ductwork, foam sealing, insulating, etc. We've had a lot of work done in the past year to renovate this old house, and Ryan, Kyle, and the EPB team are a top-notch crew. It has now been 4 years since we had a split system installed and we are now getting around to writing a review. We wanted time to see how the units performed as well as customer service if needed. We also had EP replace all the ducts and waterproof our basement. It was a huge job but they did an excellent job. They were very professional cleaning up after each day. Our system works great, my allergies are better, and our house is uniformly cool or warm as needed. Before, certain rooms would cool down well but other rooms would not. They customized the vents and ducts and airflow to adjust for rooms that tended to heat up (west facing rooms) in the summer. TLDR: I would go a winter without heat just to have Eco Performance replace my system over another contractor. It almost doesn't feel right to compare Eco Performance with the other Bay Area HVAC companies because Eco is operating at such a higher level. Earlier this year we completed a pretty large scope of work with Eco. This included 2 new ducted mini split systems with all new ducting, crawl space encapsulation, attic air sealing, insulation, and a heat pump water heater. I spent about a year researching options and getting quotes before signing a contract with ECO and there isn't anyone else in the Bay Area doing the level of work they are. I had ~10 companies provide a bid including all of the highest rate shops on Yelp. The majority of them spent less than 20 minutes in my house, did not run any sort of a load calculation, and promptly provided a mid 5 digit bid wanting to start right away. They size their HVAC systems based on "square footage and experience" and don't do any real ducting design. All of these quotes came in +/- 20% of one another, and all of these companies said they could start within a month. It was clear from the first meeting with Eco that their process is completely different. The first on-site assessment was over an hour and it was immediately apparent that Kyle was the domain expert I had been looking for. Eco followed up with a detailed quote explaining the process which included a room by room load calculation. This means they measure and draw a floor plan for your entire house including windows and insulation, run a blower door test to determine air leakage, and then run a computer model to determine how much air flow each room needs to maintain an even temperature across the house. This is just one example of the dozens of differences between what ECO does vs. the competition. To my surprise ECOs quote was competitive with the others I received when comparing similar systems and equipment. We also waited almost 6 months from contract signing to work start. Once the work started everything was top notch. We've had a lot of work done on our house this year and ECOs crew was among the best. Every person who came was prompt, respectful, and clean. I was prodding the city inspector with questions and he even mentioned that ECO is the best in the bay area. I appreciate he's able to look at the entire house, and see what's working and not, rather than just jumping in with a specific proposal. They seem quite strong on heat pumps, insulation, ducting and general performance. They seem relatively weak on roofing issues, including insulated roofing assemblies. read more

Eco Performance Builders are The Best in HVAC and energy improvements. Customer service is top-notch. We are extremely pleased with choosing them and would hire them again for any service they provide without question or comparison shopping. This company is beyond any other HVAC company out there in terms of the application of the latest in heating, cooling, insulation and energy efficiency. An independent inspector told me they are the best in the industry and inspecting their work is a formality. I asked a number of other HVAC companies about my ductwork, air sealing, a/c options, and insulation. Almost all of them just wanted to replace my existing a/c or heater, most without even looking at my ducts or insulation, never mind alternative options. EPB performed air sealing, replacement of existing traditional heating cooling system to a highly efficient ducted mini-split system (no this is not with large room cassettes) performed air sealing, installed a heat recovery ventilation system with separate ducting, replaced my gas water heater with a high-efficiency electric water heater (enabling me to get off gas completely and switch to a more friendly electric pg&e billing plan) and finally did wall and attic insulation. They performed extensive testing before and after and presented me with a plan for improvements. They also handled all the rebate documentation for us. The work took them just over 3 weeks to complete, this over Christmas and New Year! Their customer service was top notch with every employee I came in contact with. I could not recommend these guys more highly. These guys set a major standard in construction in so many ways. Some of what my wife really liked about them was how clean, polite, considerate and efficient they were. They were always within their time frame (when we booked them months in advance they told us the date and time they would start work and they made it exactly on that date and time!) and they worked within their stated hours with consistency. They kept good communication about their work and we still managed to have a nice Christmas and New Year at home during this time. I had to book them months in advance waiting for them specifically without a/c and heat and it was worth the wait. This was an investment that will pay for itself now and long term in lower maintenance costs, lower future replacement costs, intangible safety improvements, and air quality improvements and generalized improvement in home comfort and aesthetics. read more

Eco Perf. Builders did a fantastic job installing a ducted heat pump HVAC system in my home. I spoke with 5 companies before making a decision and chose EPB due to their thoroughness in determining what system would be best as well as their willingness to discuss different scenarios with me, including ducted or ductless. They were patient with my many questions and provided a competitive bid. EPB is also great with communicating throughout the process and the crew were fantastic. They clearly care about their craft and getting things right and left the worksite clean at the end of each day. This review is long over due... Eco Performance is by far one of the best vendors I have ever worked with. We hired them over a year ago to do a complete home upgrade through the PG & E program. It consisted of new heater, all ducts, adding A/C, complete home sealing, insulation, and probably a bit more. They were fantastic. Everything was done on time and in budget. The crew was amazing. Our PG & E bills have been lower... even with the new A/C. What I like is that they are not your typical HVAC company. They are super smart, engineering and science based. They will not slap some giant equipment on your house. Everything is right sized and custom, which is exactly what you need to get it right the first time. Were they more expensive? Yes. I will preface this review by saying that I rarely give 5 Star reviews, reserving them for those special businesses that leave a Positive, Lasting impression and Great, overall customer experience. (You can see my history, I don't even review often, sharing only my memorable experiences on Yelp) With that said, I truly feel that Kyle, Bill and the Eco Performance Builders Team are worth a 5 Star Rating. We originally reached out to EPB back in the end of 2015. I contacted them after finding out about the Energy Upgrade California Program. My initial struggle was finding a Certified and participating Contractor to hire. After several hours of online research and after about a dozen phone calls, I found Eco Performance Builders. Kyle followed up with me and discussed the program in more detail and we scheduled the appointment. The Proposal Kyle came to hour home and took pictures, collected his data and went to work to build a proposal. He was available and diligent in communication with my wife and I, answering questions that came up. He turned a bid around to us very quickly, all while he was in the process of preparing for his wedding. He referred us to and coordinated with an abatement company, electrician and a drywall company. Kyle gave us a very detailed proposal with options and after we looked at the costs and we decided that the long term benefits were worth the investment and made our selections. Kyle was great! We went with the "Full Envelope wrap" that Kyle suggested which included Wall Insulation in the exterior walls, new attic insulation, an energy efficient furnace along with new ducting and an EVR system (For Air Circulation). There was one hiccup that happened, but Kyle took care of it and we are satisfied with the Customer Service. The Install Kyle referred us to and coordinated with abatement companies and their electrician; who also helped us add some extra, last minute lighting in conjunction with our energy improvement. Bill and "The Crew" showed up on day one and were professional, courteous and incredibly efficient in the demolition and installation stages of our upgrade. They provided space heaters for us to help while we had no furnace and their organization and communication was awesome! Bill was available for questions and concerns and very thorough with the installation details, often calling us with a daily update, which was much appreciated. Bill and his Team were awesome! The Finish Pre-Upgrade Our house, even in San Leandro, on those few "Hot" weeks during the year, when the temps would stagnate at 90-95 for a week or two at a time, our house would easily heat to 85-90+ degrees inside. It would then take us a few hours after the sun went down, with all the windows open and a fans in the main rooms, before the temperature would cool down enough to make it comfortable to sleep. In the Winter time our house was often drafty and the furnace would blast away in order to keep our home at a comfortable temperature. Post-Upgrade With our improved insulation, sealing of the top sills of the walls, insulation in the exterior walls and the replaced furnace with new ducting, our house is typically between 68-75 degrees year round. We set the thermostat to hold at 69-70 (now that we have a 10 month old) but even at 69, it "Feels" more comfortable than other homes that don't have these improvements (Like our parents') We rarely "Have to" open the windows unless we want to and we no longer immediately open them up to vent our house when we get home on those hot Bay Area days. Summary With all of this said and done, my wife and I would feel 100% confident in recommending EPB to anyone looking to make their home more comfortable. (She recommended them to her parents, but they don't currently cover the Sacramento area) These folks were Professional, Courteous and Timely in their process. They were easy to get a hold of and their communication was excellent. I've waited over a year to write this review because I wanted to see if we noticed a difference and I will honestly say that we do. We do not have Central A/C, ONLY Central Heat. We still use a fan on those really warm days, to circulate the air around our living room, but with a south facing window, it gets the warmest. From an Energy Efficiency standpoint, I will say that we probably did not save as much in the first 6-9 months because we were using the EVR daily and often forgetting to turn it off (It is Electric, so this probably added more energy cost, but that is not against EPB. The other thing we did was run the EcoBee3 thermostat where it would cycle the fan for 15 minutes every hour to circulate the air in the house and this too probably eroded any electricity savings of the system we could have gotten. I've since shut that feature off and we only run the EVR sparingly now, usually in the evenings and I have started to see our electricity consumption go back down. We got our Rebate and are happy with our decision. read more

Another happy customer! We contacted EPB since our water heater is getting old and we have virtually no insulation otherwise. The temp in our house would fluctuate wildly. Decided to do the audit and get as much done from it as we could initially afford. First, Kyle is great to work with. He did our audit and explained everything very well. Excellent communication. We weren't able to do everything suggested in the first go, but did the air sealing, attic and floor insulation, got a new WAY more efficient water heater and added a ventilation fan. The guys came, did the work, were very careful and didn't damage anything in the house. Bill was great to work with as well (the foreman). So far, it's made a massive difference. Our home used to get 3-4 degrees warmer than the outside temp, no matter how hot it got... so these recent days we've seen a high of say 84, I would see our thermostat reach 86! Not anymore! Now it never gets above the low 70's, even on an 80+ day. Of course it also holds the heat so on cool nights we'll wake up and realize it never dipped below our thermostat setting. The heater coming on is much more a rarity, so much that we actually notice when it kicks on now. Too bad we couldn't get fully modernized with the hydronic air heater (which is way more efficient and comfortable than our oversized and inefficient furnace) and new duct work! That would have taken us up a big notch into a constantly comfortable temperature year round. Kyle knows his stuff and explained the science behind it all. Basically, our furnace pumps out overly hot air which doesn't mix well with the ambient temp, tends to make the place feel hot and dry for a short while before it rises to the ceiling. These hydronic systems run constantly at a lower temp that mixes well with the room, are super efficient, and utilize energy from the hot water heater. When our furnace finally dies, we'll be back for that! read more

From start to finish, my experience with Eco Performance Builders was extremely positive. Kyle did a very thorough home energy audit and took the time to talk me through each of the systems in our home which could be improved. He provided me with a menu of options and prioritized minimizing disruption while at the same time giving us the biggest bang for our buck. Once the work got started, Bill and the rest of the crew were prompt and courteous and really went out of their way to keep our house clean. It's always disruptive to have a work crew in your house, but I never felt uncomfortable having them around and my daughter absolutely loved them. Finally, the end result of the work was outstanding. Our house is more comfortable, less drafty, and cheaper to heat during the cold winter months (our January bill was ~50% less than it was in January 2018). My personal favorite part is the vapor barrier they installed in our subfloor crawlspace. It keep things clean and makes it easy to move around down there! A must for those homeowners who find themselves crawling around under their houses on a regular basis. Oh, and the icing on the cake was that Kyle took care of all of the PG&E rebate paperwork and even recommended money-saving changes to our electric rate plan. It's hard to overstate how appreciative we are of the entire team at Eco Performance Builders. It is with great pleasure I write this review. My Project: Home air sealing in the attic and crawl spaces. Crawlspace Vapor Barrier and air sealing. Attic clean up of old fiberglass loose fill and blown in cellulose insulation to R44. Replacement of old inefficient gas furnace and AC units both American Standard with a new properly sized Trane system. Removed old duct work and optimized replacement with new insulated ducts and then balanced for each room Home Ventilation system installed. Whisper Quiet bathroom fans and new ducts for them. All done with permit, to code and with inspections. Eco Performance Builders in my opinion is the company to hire. It all started with my own education about building science about a year ago, as I knew my home was woefully inefficient, uncomfortable from an HVAC standpoint and had problems that I only thought were there but proved to be larger than even I had anticipated. So with that in mind I luckily found Eco Performance Builders and scheduled an in home energy audit and assessment. Kyle and I spoke on the phone and I enjoyed learning more from a true professional who is confident as well as a gentleman. An energy audit was scheduled and he was at my home on time, well prepared and armed with a cornucopia of diagnostic and investigative equipment. I knew my home was going to have a forensic exam as I considered it a near crime the way my HVAC was thrown together! So it began, with hours of investigating, building measurements and many photos. We spoke at great length about my homes issues and I looked forward to the audit in writing once completed. A couple of weeks later I read a detailed and informative report. I was near speechless at the energy I pay for that was being lost due to a failing duct system and an oversized HVAC unit. Once all the details had been worked out I chose an option that suited me best and as of yesterday my home is complete. The professionalism continued once the crew was here, Bill the foreman in charge is a congenial accomplished professional. I was happy to have he and his crew in my home. They covered floors, taped off areas to minimize dust and were respectful from the first moment. Jorge, the 2 Ryan's, Kevin and a few others I forgotten their names, were just as approachable to talk with as Kyle and Bill. I asked many questions as I too am still learning. My attic is tight in some areas and my sub basement is impossible for me to even fit into. The crew smiled and went about their daily work with a happiness as they knew they were only making my home better. I knew it too, but once I felt it, I then internally realized my decision was the best in selecting them. Oh I did interview other contractors and even had an energy audit from another, but once I saw the "deer in the headlights look" with those others as I asked detailed building science questions, I knew that Eco Performance Builders was for me. The office manager Kristy is a pleasant person to email and talk with. She and I spoke and it felt to me as though we were old friends, I was and am totally at ease and felt in good hands with a knowledgable and trusted company to only make my home the best it can be for the budget I picked. My home went through a cathartic metamorphosis and I could not be any more elated at the results. The job was completed on time, on budget and with a zeal and professionalism rarely encountered in all my years of hiring contractors to repair or remodel my home. We had the best home repair experience ever with Eco Performance Builders. It was flawless. All their team members are perfectionists. Yelp reviews helped me select them so I would like to reiterate how great they are. I have been freezing in our house for the last two years. I did not realize we had a furnace from the stone age. I would increase the thermostat up to 74F and it would be freezing again in 15 minutes. Not anymore! The new furnace is 96% efficient and it is very quiet as an added bonus. We can actually hear each other speak when the furnace is on. EPB initially performed an energy audit for the house. I was very impressed with a very thorough report. They were not pushy at all with their recommendations and they were trying to make it cost effective for us. They create several plans so you can select according to your budget as well. It is great to know there are still businesses like this out there. They work very hard and they try to make it as quick as possible without skipping any steps. They are quick but they don't leave until they think it is perfect. They took care of all our concerns right away. The inspections, rebates were all taken care of by them. We live in an older craftsman home where the internal temperature is always colder or warmer than it is outside. While the house is charming, it makes for not-so-comfortable summers and winters. Enter Eco Performance Builders. We contacted them about doing an energy audit on our house. It wasn't so they could tell us the obvious, but to help quantify and educate us on what could be done. Kyle came out to perform the audit and was really friendly and professional. He explained what they could do, what rebates we could qualify for, as well as prepare multiple options that we could pick from depending on our needs and budget. When we finally decided, Bill, (little) Keith, Cody, and the rest of the crew came to our house and knocked out insulating the roof, floors, and sealing air leaks in a week. They were also professional, efficient, considerate of the fact that I work at home (and we have pets), and a general pleasure to work with. They explained what they were doing and consulted me when there was anything that came up. They cleaned up after themselves each day they were here. Keith, one of the owners even came out to help and when there was something wrong or needed fixing, he was responsive and responsible. As a company, they have a great philosophy that both Keith and Kyle have reiterated: they are happy when we are comfortable. A week after the installation was complete, things weren't quite as comfy as we would have preferred and Keith came out personally to help make adjustments. Amazing company - extremely friendly, professional and efficient! Kyle did a full energy assessment and then walked through the report and recommendations. They were extremely flexible with scheduling as we had a few family crises. Bill and the crew completed full insulation - attic, walls and crawl space - and walked us through each step and showed us the work completed. The crew cleaned up every day when they left and were extremely diligent to get all areas effectively air sealed. We now have a house that has a constant temperature throughout and is about 10 degrees warmer than pre-insulation. We are also impressed with the significant reduction of outside noise. I cannot recommend Eco Performance highly enough - if you want great work from friendly and reliable contractors, this is the company for you! read more
