Pure, delicious diner food! Had lunch here while on a work trip. Patty melt with fries was delicious! The grilled rye bread was done to perfection and the meat patty was a high quality meat-lean and not fatty at all. Love the mom and pop diner ambience. My co worker had a ham and cheese omelet with home fries and he loved it. It was so yummy we returned the next day for lunch and ordered the same meals! I will definitely return when in the area!! read more

I love, love, love this place! Dave, the owner, makes some awesome smoked meat (pork, beef and chicken). If I see the grill outside I know where I'm going. In my opinion, Allin's is the only real diner in St. Charles. Chain diners beware! Allin's is the real deal. Breakfast is served all day and you can pick how you want your eggs and bacon cooked. Neat! For someone who is picky about eggs this is awesome. You can also choose the size of your burger which is served on ciabatta bread. This is no regular ciabatta because it is nice and soft and doesn't tear up my mouth. They also have a cranberry bread french toast that is pretty amazing. For the record, I have never had something at this establishment that I didn't like. Good coffee too. For the vegetarians out there they have a black bean veggie burger and salads. Not a huge selection, but its better than nothing. My favorite thing about Allin's is that they do not have a fryer. Sorry, but there are no french fries here kids. I like that Dave doesn't want to kill his customers with clogged arteries. Allin's is near Lindenwood University, but it is not loaded with college kids. There is a nice mix of people and a lot of regulars. You may see some familiar faces on the wall while you are in there. Allin' s has a photo night where you can come in have some dinner and have your photo taken so they can display your beautiful face on their wall. The only reason I thought about docking a star from this review is that some of the staff get a little chatty and run me late getting back to work on my lunch break. Overall service is great and super friendly so it's 5 stars from me. Thank you to Allin's for making my tummy happy! Now all you need are milkshakes. read more

This is the family owned and friendly restaurant diner everyone should go out of their way to experience. Each item I have seen food come out of the kitchen it looks to have the pride of a family business running through its juices. On this visit I got the special of the day, fish tacos, made your choice tilapia or salmon and I chose tilapia. Lots of fish on the three tacos. This was served with fire roasted salsa and a local Happy Dog Hot Sauce with habanero smoky flavor. The combination was fantastic! My bro ate the tuna salad which he said was great. He also thought the seasoned potato chips were a nice upgrade from the standard chips. We broke down and got the pie. He got the cherry pie ala mode and loved it. I got the chocolate and thought it was pretty good (first thing I was not totally gaga over here). The sever was very nice and did not rush us even though it was getting close to closing time (4 PM). Awww bummer, man. I hate to rag on a quaint little family owned restaurant like Allin's, because I'm all about supporting small businesses. Visiting the greater Saint Louis area for Labor Day weekend, I searched for good breakfast joints in the area and found this place on Yelp with a 'near perfect rating!' My confidence level high, I drove considerably out of my way, hoping for a quality eggs + bacon + hash browns & toast. It wasn't as cheap as I expected (something like $7), but that didn't irk me too much. What did frustrate me, however, was the wait. 30+ minutes for food that honestly couldn't have been more basic. It wasn't the waitstaff, though, since they put my order in right away. Which leads me to putting the blame on an interminably slow kitchen. To be fair, it was a busy Sunday morning at 11am, but all the more reason they should've been on top of their game (peak hours, amirite?) For a straightforward breakfast order, anything over half an hour is FAR too long, and I never got any reassurance or apology from the girls behind the counter (e.g. "your food'll be right up, sorry it's taking a while"), so I can't help but be a little miffed. Once the food finally arrived, I scarfed it down with zero hesitation. No problems there. Although during my lengthy wait, I couldn't help but look around the diner to see what was on the walls. Staring up at the ceiling, I noticed a decidedly filthy air vent that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. Normally I wouldn't care, but it was fully clogged with dust and debris.....and directly over where people were sitting, eating their pancakes and french toast. One strong gust and your Denver omelette would become a dust & dirt scrambler. That said, it wasn't a bad egg-sperience (get it? cuz of what I ordered?) Dave and Vicki Allin run a cute diner, I'll give them that. I was hoping for a quick morning meal, but that I did not receive. I'd understand if they were short staffed in the kitchen, but the dirty air vents are a health and sanitation issue for which there's really no excuse. Sorry, guys :( read more

We went for breakfast today, and it was fantastic. For a great price, I had two eggs, two pancakes, and sausage. The pancakes were super light and fluffy. I remarked to the owner how awesome they were and he told me that they were made just like his grandmother made them --- out of the old Betty Crocker cookbook. The eggs were cooked to perfection - over medium. Whites were bouncy, yolks were runny. My husband had an omelet that was about two inches thick and full of ham, peppers and onions. The place was packed, and we were lucky to get a spot at the counter. We noticed that the owner gives classes on making soups. The next one was full, but we'll definitely check that out since it seems to be so popular. We'll be back for breakfast for sure - and probably other meals as well! read more

Great comfort food!!! We went early on a Sunday morning while the diner was quiet. I started with a half order of biscuits and gravy. It was huge. This is REAL sausage gravy, not some nasty, pasty white gunk. I followed up with two scrambled eggs topped with chili and melted cheese. The chili was fantastic and it was a perfect combination. Sue, our waitress,was friendly and fast. I can understand how this place can be packed later in the day. It's worth the wait. Don't get fancy with what you order. My husband and I ate a late breakfast there a few weeks ago and it was wonderful! Allin's Diner is a cozy little place in St Charles. One thing that stands out are the many, many pictures decorating the walls. They are mostly photos of the various customers through the years and give off a vibe of "who needs celebrities - our regulars are our celebrities." The food was amazing: I had pancakes with bits of andouille sausage mixed in, which had the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. (Apparently this was invented by Dave Allin, the owner/chef.) My husband had one of the specials: a huge platter of about a half-dozen breakfast foods. I didn't poach but it looked delicious. The waitress was friendly and efficient; the coffee was fresh. Great place to go in general but especially if you are tired of chain restaurants. I'd give it more than five stars if I could. read more

We went for breakfast this morning. Service was great, fast and friendly. It's a small dining room, the AC wasn't really keeping up with the heat (really we were the brunch crowd, about 11:30) Husband and I had read rave reviews about the biscuits and gravy so I ordered them. I really do not think they were made from scratch. Biscuits were super salty (Clear sign of a mix) and the sausage gravy just tasted bland. Scrambled eggs were cooked too fast on a grill that was too hot for eggs. Husband had pancakes and scrambled eggs. We didn't hate it, but at $22 for breakfast for two, I wanted home cooking; I was disappointed. Go to Ginghams instead. read more

For years I heard about what a little gem Allin's Diner was, but I was skeptical. Not sure why, just couldn't get excited about trying it. It seemed to be primarily known as a breakfast joint, and I'd never been that into breakfast food. I was finally convinced to visit when it was mentioned on the website/newsletter OnlyInYourState.com. I thought, "huh, maybe it IS a little gem!" So the wife and I headed out. The main way I judge a breakfast place is by their biscuits and gravy, so I knew I had to try those. I also got an order of the corned beef hash, not exactly an exotic dish, but relatively uncommon in these parts. My wife ordered the cranberry bread French toast, which definitely sounded unique. I usually ask the server if the gravy is from a mix or made from scratch. I've only gotten the correct answer (made from scratch) once, and even that one was most assuredly a mix. I did not ask this time, as I assumed that a little gem such as Allin's would of course make their gravy from scratch. I should have asked. Real sausage gravy is thick like creamy grits, with an almost caramel color, and dotted with flecks of black pepper and loaded with craggy nuggets of spicy sausage. This gravy's texture was closer to thinned out glue. The color was white and the flavor was white, a raw flour flavor, insipid. The server actually warned me about the hash when I ordered it. She told me it was hash browns with pastrami (not corned beef) and onions mixed in. I was looking forward to a more traditional hash, with tender cubes of potatoes, crispy edges and chunks of corned beef. The hash browns were greasy; the pastrami was bland. My wife's French toast was pleasant, but I had anticipated the sweet and sour tang of cranberries, which was absent. The place is not inexpensive, so I don't expect I'll be revisiting Allin's anytime soon. The service was good. You'd be better off at Gingham's or even Cracker Barrel, Heaven forbid. read more

Some might call it cozy, but truthfully, this is a very tiny place where you feel claustrophobic and like packed in sardines. Can barely get around chairs once you CAN find a table or seat available. What photos are on the walls you can't really see unless you are seated half an inch away from the wall--and you most likely will be. The fare is typical, greasy, fattening, unhealthy diner fare, so if that's your thing, knock yourself out. Make sure your insurance is up to date--both your health insurance and your life insurance. Once, my dining companion ordered soup and a side salad. I ordered the larger dinner salad. My dining companion's salad was TWICE the size of mine for half the price! I got a very small bowl (smaller than the bowl the side salad was in) with a couple pieces of lettuce, a packet of crackers, a sprinkle of cheese, one very small piece of chicken, and some dressing. That was my ENTIRE meal, and there was NOTHING there, and the price was around $8! I prefer to have healthier options available on the menu, and to be able to move around more than one can in that very small, confining space where they specialize in clogged arteries. Definitely not my kinda place. You might like it, but it's definitely not for me. read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. We originally drove from IL on Father's Day to go to the diner down the street and got their 10 minutes before closing and they said that they couldn't serve us so we stumbled on Allin's which also closed in 2 minutes. He told us to "Come on in!!" Glad we did!!! Food was excellent- biscuits and gravy, pancakes, salt n pepper chips.... Another family showed up 30 minutes after closing with closed sign in place and they gave the little girl that was disappointed a free cinnamon roll to go!! The place was completely full and she was able to answer the phone, bus the tables, take orders, fill out tickets, work the cash register, keep coffees full - it was truly masterful. I hadn't been to Allin's in years and I'd only been for breakfast then. My lunch today was pleasantly good. I only ordered the tomato basil soup, and boy was it thick. The other people in my party had a reuben, blt, and another sandwich. All were satisfied. I was less than impressed with the fact that cobblers were on the menu but hadn't been prepared yet (it was nearly 12:30 p.m.) and by our server, who scratched her face while taking our orders and who did not enunciate her words. read more

Cranberry French toast used to be worth driving two hours to eat, today so cold that not even the room temperature butter would melt. It's not the most extensive menu but it's everything you'd expect from typical diner. Although small inside they keep tables moving in and out fairly quickly, though some reviewers said the wait for food is a bit long. That was not our experience at all. We ordered takeout from here this past Sunday for the first and last time. Not a single employee was wearing a mask, including the cook that my husband saw! Aside from that, the food was mediocre. I tried the french toast since that's what everyone raved about on the reviews, it was ok, probably much better warm at the restaurant. The 'corned beef hash' was hash browns with bits of meat in it, definitely not corned beef hash! We also had different types of eggs and an order of bacon...both of which are hard to mess up would have probably been fine warm in the restaurant. read more

Excellent Sunday brunch spot a little of the main st of St Charles. We stopped in around 10 am, and we're very happy with our breakfast. I ordered a half order of the cranberry walnut French toast with eggs and sausage, and my boyfriend ordered a half order of pancakes with eggs and bacon. Both were excellent, but I definitely recommend trying the French toast! He prices were pretty standard for diner type food. The thing I loved was the portion sizes were just right, which is not typical of diners. If you are really hungry and expecting a gigantic portion, make sure you order extra. The only negative we had was the service. It didn't take as long to be seated as we expected given that it was a Sunday morning, but once we put our order in we waited a while for our food. We also were only checked on once the entire time we were there and I was waiting to have my coffee refilled. Will definitely stop in again to try their lunch. Allin's is pretty solid in my book. Sean and I have been back countless times (more than my check-ins suggest) and we've enjoyed it each time. The waitresses are really nice and they treat you like a regular even if it's your first time. On my most recent visit, I had half of a bacon egg and sharp cheddar cheese omelette. I am drooling just thinking about it even though I am not hungry at all right now and ate it earlier in the day! Hehe. Also tried their cranberry nut toast and it is soooo tasty! Perfect combo with some OJ. Sean tried the turkey club on this visit and while he liked it, he didn't like the chips it came with (but I loved them!) he also got hashbrowns which we fought over, hehe. We've taken his parents here too and they really enjoyed it as well. I will keep coming back here for as long as we live here. It's so close to my home too, about a 5 min drive. read more

I reviewed Allin's 6 and a half years ago. They've only improved. It's still a cozy little clean place, they still have excellent service, but their food has just reached that perfect level. Simple breakfast is what we wanted and exactly what we got. I eat out a LOT (I've travelled about 60 days in 2016) so it is refreshing to find such great food and nice people minutes from home. read more

We were in the area for breakfast last Saturday and stopped in. I'm really glad we came back so I can update my review. Allin's looks like a regular diner when you walk in the door, but as you sit and survey some of the details, you realize there are some people involved with this restaurant that have no desire whatsoever to be ordinary. First, check out the prices of the daily specials (probably 10 of them, at least). They are like $5.06, $7.13, $6.48. Not sure where these come from unless somebody's doing a very specific cost calculation. There are about 8 soups to choose from, even on a day when it's going to get close to 80 degrees. Some eclectic options, too, like carrot dill and cheesy burger soup. Interesting at least. We had fun checking out some of the unusual menu items, most of them seemed to use ordinary items in creative ways. You won't find truffles or quail eggs here. Sorry, but I didn't write any of them down, just trust me and check it out. We had pastrami hash and a custom omelet. both were excellent. Service was again attentive and friendly. I hope we find ourselves in the area for breakfast again. Give it a try if you're in the area. read more

I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said about Allin's Diner. My wife and I stopped in here a few weeks ago for our first visit. It was a Sunday morning, just before the Church rush I suppose, because we were able to get a seat almost instantly. It wasn't long before the lines started forming though. Mrs. S and I went for the breakfast experience, and there is no better word than delicious! I had the half order of biscuits and gravy along with 2 eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Mrs S. went for the pancakes and eggs and bacon. Both meals were perfect! We went back again yesterday for brunch, and again, food is fantastic! I honestly think this is the best kept secret in St. Charles. So many people that I know around here have never heard of Allin's, most of them have lived or gone to Lindenwood, just down the street. I am curious to get in here and try the lunch and dinner menus, but just cannot tear myself away from the breakfast! read more

A total gem! Small place on the corner of what seems to be a strip mall. You walk in to a locals dream of sights and smells.Pictures of customers adorn the wall and a friendly face greets you as soon as you seat yourself...where there is room ;) I went for breakfast. Pancakes and biscuits are made in house from scratch(YUM!) For my meal I had scrambled eggs with cheddar, hashbrowns, and a pancake. Coffee was good..kind that'll put some hair on your chest. Everything is ordered a la carte unless you order one of the few combined meals. When I looked around an array of plates were on the tables. Breakfast burrito, chicken salad wrap, biscuits w/gravy, blueberry and chocolate chip pancakes. On the menu there is a handy guide for ordering eggs just in case you wanted them a certain way. Overall, great experience, would recommend to a friend and return.. if I didn't live so far. read more
