Today was an extremely busy day at Black Bear. There were only two hosts, and the restaurant was packed. Even though all of this was happening, each of the workers were extremely attentive and kind, making sure that we understood why there was a wait. And as soon as we got seated, we were helped as soon as possible. They stayed smiling and kind even through all of the customers yelling at them (which the entire restaurant could hear). The food took a while to come out, but as soon as it did, it was worth the wait. For a party of five, we all thought that our meals were delicious. Placed a togo order and went inside to retrieve it. They weren't busy. There were two women at the counter, one was checking out a customer and the other was just standing around. The young lady checking out the customer greeted me and continued on about her business, no one ever asked if i needed anything so i just spoke up and stated I had a to go order. The young lady who was just standing around eventually went to retrieve my order. My husband ordered Bob's big bear burger with onion rings. Ordered a taco salad from grubhub after searching for a good taco salad near me..this looked amazing from other pics on here..and i hoped mine would be just as good! well I get my taco salad and there is NO BEANS which is so disappointing i literally got this cuz beans where included! barely any cheese and a small sliver of avocado but the real kicker was a small hard CLUMP of beef on top it was just a tiny Lil hard clump that was so dried out and hard couldn't even chew it..dont recommend this unless you go into eat and can get it corrected if needed ..paid 18 bucks for some lettuce in a tortilla bowl!! read more

We went in for Mother's day breakfast. Understanding that it would be busy , we understood the wait for the table. Three cups of coffee and over an hour later we finally got our food . It was Luke warm . The breakfast potatoes were tasteless, there was an empty pepper grinder on the table . Don't think we will be going back for breakfast. read more

We got right in... No wait on a Sunday. Funny know how that happened as the crowd hit after we sat. The food was a bit slow coming out but they let us know they got hit with an online order for 150 just before we put our order in. It wasn't unreasonable and we weren't in a big hurry. The food came out so good. We usually go to a different location closer to home but this one certainly did everything right. We had a fun breakfast and my daughter took food home for the next day. I had the cinnamon roll French Toast... Yeah the best I've ever had. This was real cinnamon rolls turned into French toast. Not just cinnamon on bread and you call it that. Great location. What a mess! Waited 1.5 hours to be seated and to be told that there will be additional wait because kitchen is backed up. The staff said the manager said not to shut off all the to-go orders which put the kitchen further behind. Management is the worst, this time and the precious time we visited. They need to have a manager is is going to be onsite and actually take care of the issues as it arises. I would recommend they fire the current management from the regional to the local manager. read more

Came in for the start of my birthday weekend and left disappointed. Arrived a little past nine and came into a mostly empty location. Stood at the host area for about ten minutes while the staff finished their conversation and snack. We're seated and asked what we wanted to drink . We both asked for coffee and I asked for a Blue Moon. Coffee came and 15 minutes later I am told they did not have Blue Moon (maybe the staff should know what they are out of.) we ordered our breakfast and it was presented. Eggs and sausage were cool to the touch, nowhere near even warm or hot. The biscuits were dry and hard to eat even with gravy. Finally when we left the coupon we had from the app would not work and no assistance was offered. Came here for brunch with a smaller group of three. it has a very old-school diner field even the menus are like little newspapers, which is a very cute idea the design wise it's a little busy, but it was cute idea I might delete. Service was a little slow. The restaurant was a little busy, but it seemed like our waitress took a very long time getting around to our table. Especially if we put in additional requests for napkins or additional water, so that was a bit of a downside to our meal. It's a very family-friendly restaurant lots of large groups there or groups with children. I do think the menu could use a little updating, especially as a non-meat eater. There were very limited options as far as any protein items. Also, the pancakes were much smaller than I imagined, they were described to be large. But, they're pretty medium sized to me, especially coming only in an order of two. Also, a lot of the food lacked seasoning or any additional flavor, which was a bit disappointing. Black Bear is a go to when no one can think of something they want. The menu has something for everyone. I love their breakfast options. Breakfast is available all day. Service is hit or miss. We have had amazing service and we have had less than desirable service. Yesterday I looked at our ticket and was appalled that they were charging well over $3 for iced tea. That's crazy. I know prices are going up but $3.49 for drink like that is doing to much for this level of a restaurant. read more

With frigid temperatures looming in STL, what a great day for some breakfast. Black Bear diner was a nice place to visit on a cold day. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised not too many people were there. We were seated promptly and was greeted by our server. They got our drink order while we pondered over a large menu of breakfast or lunch options. We both decided breakfast sounded better and went with a simple bacon and eggs dish and then ordered on of their signature breakfast dishes the Bigfoot, a large port of chicken fried steak and eggs. Both dishes come with biscuits so we add gravy for a minimal charge. While waiting for our orders, we enjoyed our coffee and beverages and caught up on the family gossip. Our food took a little longer than usual but it made have been short staffed due to the weather. When our food came we noticed the gravy was as warm as we expected and the hash browns weren't fully cooked. I'm not one to send things back because spending time the family is awesome. Stopped by for lunch while we were in the area. Lunch was most excellent and didn't disappoint!! I had the BOB'S BIG BEAR BURGER and my better half had the BIGFOOT CHICKEN FRIED STEAK and WOW, we could have share either dish. Our server was very attentive, stopping by numerous times to check on us. The restaurant was decorated in true bear design. Restaurant was clean and we were seated right away. I have driven past this diner a million and a half times and stopped into one in Salt Lake City not realizing this was the same place we have in St Charles! Was looking for a good breakfast place a few days ago and finally got the chance to come here. The decor is adorable- very bear/rustic themed and they have stuff you can buy too. The service was great and prices were fair. Portion sizes were large and the food came out very quick! My husband got the trip tip dip sandwich. I had the chicken sausage scramble and we split the cinnamon roll pancakes. All of it was incredibly delicious. Fresh fruit came with both as well as toast. For me, the word Diner means a small, congested, loud environment saturated with the smell of grease and staff shouting out orders (not in a bad way). Black Bear is nothing like that. It is a large, open, clean, attractive restaurant. Lots of rough finish wood, and Bear logos create a mountain lodge feel. The food arrived, hot, quickly, and plentiful. My staple is the standard bacon and eggs. The bacon strips were big, thick, and well cooked. This is very different than almost everywhere else where you get two, 6 inch, skinny, mostly fat slices of pork belly. These had meat on them. The hashbrowns were well cooked, and probably almost a whole potato. The biscuit was the largest I've ever seen, bigger than my fist, light and very tasty. Unfortunately, the eggs follow the new standard in restaurants, and by that I mean tiny. They were well cooked, and delicious, but almost hidden on the plate. The prices were in line with normal breakfast, restaurants, so you get more food than in most of the competition. The wait staff were attentive, polite, and professional. The restroom was extremely clean, and had a just scrubbed aroma. As I finished this review, I realized that my four stars should actually be five. This is one of the top breakfast restaurants I've been to in sometime. read more

Cutely decorated diner. Makes you feel like you're close to the woods the staff was very friendly although the waitress kept forgetting to bring stuff that we asked for. The food was very good. They serve breakfast all day long so I decided to have breakfast for lunch and ordered the volcano. It came with three different size pancakes, two eggs, two sausage links, and two slices of thick bacon. It was enough to take home and have breakfast the next day. The pancakes were very good. They had nice sweet taste to them. My sister ordered the grilled chicken taco salad. That looked absolutely delicious and I will definitely be ordering that again. That was very large as well and she took half of hers home. If you want a nice good home-cooked diner place, you would like this restaurant. Being originally from California, I was very pleased to find blackbear diner in Saint Charles. Tri-tip is extremely hard to find in this region. It's not a cut that's normally celebrated in the Midwest. Although on the West Coast, it is easily found in sandwiches, events, and barbecues. The staff members were friendly, just inattentive. We didn't get refills, and it took a while to place our order once seated. I asked for the bacon to be extra crispy, and it wasn't. The table surface was clean, but otherwise the table was kind of gross. There was grime on the salt and pepper shakers. The hot sauce bottles were covered in dried old sauce. Quite disappointed in my experience here. Ordered avocado toast and got underripe slices of avocado without any seasoning on a slice of basic bread. My boyfriend got chocolate chip pancakes that had 11 chocolate chips on them and that was it. Grits were undercooked and service was awful.
