tl;dr We rented a car from Allsave/NÜ Car Rentals in Lihue, HI. It was teeming with cockroaches that traumatized my family and got into our luggage and subsequently our hotel room. We returned the car immediately. It's been 11 days and, despite six phone messages and three emails, they've not responded with an apology nor have they processed our refund.

Last week, my family and I arrived in Kauai for a weeklong vacation. We picked up our rental car at Allsave/NÜ Car Rentals in Lihue. We stowed our bags in the trunk of the car and drove to our hotel in Poipu. We arrived prior to check-in, so we drove to a nearby mall while we waited for our room. We ate lunch and visited some shops before returning to the car two hours later.
As my wife settled into the front seat, she pointed out two cockroaches at her feet which immediately scuttled up into the dashboard. A moment later, my nine year old daughter shrieked from the back seat. I jumped out of the car--already having an idea what was wrong--and opened the rear door to see a dozen roaches, adults and babies, circling on the floor beside her. I stomped on the swarm, sending them scurrying under the mat and up into the front seat.
I raced to the hotel to drop off my family so that I could return the car immediately. Pulling our bags from the trunk, two roaches fell to the ground. My daughter screamed and dropped her backpack as another roach crawled across its strap.
I quickly checked our bags, giving them all a good shake, hoping that was the last of them--another fell to the ground. I carried our luggage to reception and left my family with the bags as I drove back to Lihue.
At the rental office, the agent in charge, Jess, was apologetic. She offered a complimentary upgrade and free tank of gas. I was not comfortable taking another car from them, so I refused. Jess informed me that she could not issue the refund herself because we'd booked the car online. She wrote a phone number on a sticky note and told me to call it to arrange the refund. She also gave me a business card with her name and the name of her manager, Sherri, and said to contact them if necessary.
I was then given a ride to another rental agency where I rented a car and drove back to my family. When I arrived at the hotel, my daughter was shaken and my wife was stressed. They'd seen another roach scurrying among our bags.
We headed to the pool to unwind. After dinner, we returned to our room. We showered and got into bed, my wife and I in the bedroom and our daughter in the living room on a pull-out sofa. A few minutes later, another shriek. I ran to the living room. "There's something crawling on my neck!" My daughter was twisted up in her sheets as a giant roach flew up toward the wall. It was large enough that, when I smacked it out of the air, you could hear its exoskeleton crack.
Over the next few days, I called the number on the sticky three times. Each time, I was directed to voicemail. Each time, I left a message describing the incident and requesting a refund. Each time, the message was ignored. I called the local office twice. Both times, I left messages for Sherri. Both times, my messages were ignored.
Frustrated, I wrote an email to Allsave Gmail and NÜ's help email address. I finally received a response from Sherri. She did not offer an apology. She did not offer to process our refund. She did not even offer to follow up with me to ensure that we were taken care of.
"I just saw this email today. I have forwarded this to my Maui office to see how this can be remedied. Please allow for my office on Maui to reach NÜ Car Rentals and we will take it from there."
That was a week ago. I've since followed up with two more emails. Neither of which received a reply.
My daughter continued to check her clothing and backpack for roaches for the duration of our stay. She was anxious and repeatedly asked if the roaches were gone. I tried to calm and reassure her. Fortunately, we did not see any roaches beyond that first horrific day. Unfortunately, the damage was done. We had a fun trip and enjoyed our time in Kauai, but I can't help but wonder how much better it would have been had we not been traumatized by the cockroach infestation on our first day.
I called again this morning and an uninterested desk agent named Alex informed me that Jess and Sherri were both out of office.
After six unreturned phone calls and three emails without a meaningful response, I am out of patience. I don't understand the unprofessionalism, the lack of empathy and the indifference toward our family's suffering, especially in the land of Aloha. I submitted two final messages through both Allsave's website and NÜ Car Rentals website. I expect a reply from neither. So instead, I will begin my credit card dispute and hope for the best. read more
