Alma is my go to brunch spot whenever I visit the Twin Cities. It's a smaller space that's always packed, but my friends and I never struggle to find a place at the bar where you can see the action happening. The pricing is also very reasonable, with a good brunch costing only about $10 before tip. All the ingredients are fresh, they even squeeze the juice right in front of your eyes! I got the classic breakfast, which comes with 2 eggs, toast w/ fresh jam, and home style potatoes. Nothing fancy, but the food is great quality and everything is seasoned perfectly. The potatoes in particular are very well made -- crispy and seasoned to pack a punch. The eggs were fluffy and well made, while the sourdough toast packed great flavor. I really appreciate Alma for diet conscious attitude. Everything on the menu is labeled vegetarian or gluten free if it is, and there are plenty of options to choose from. The staff also asks if you have any dietary restrictions when they take your order and try to work out tasty alternatives if required (ex. Gluten free toast or Almond/oat milk in oatmeal). Walked across the Arch Bridge after some sightseeing and found the cafe. It was after 1pm and it was a little busy but the line moved quickly and we found a spot to sit inside. Ordered the Thursday burger special, some chips, a brownie and drinks. We sat at the end of the counter and waited for our food. We had a view of the cook so we could see how busy it was and were happy to hang out, converse, and have our drinks as we cooled off. The restaurant has high ceilings and a trendy but casual look and vibe which made for neat ambiance. We got here at 11:30 and got seated right away and noticed it started picking up around noon. We had a wonderful dinner at Alma on the cafe side. We almost missed this place as the website only shows the 3 course menu and we wanted something a bit lighter. The restaurant / hotel has a separate more formal dining area, and a lively cafe side. We started with the crispy cauliflower which was reminiscent of calamari with a slightly spicy bite from the crispy jalapeño slices which were balanced by lightly fried mint leaves, sesame, and a mayonnaise based sauce, probably the best cauliflower dish we have ever had. I had the lamb burger and crispy potatoes on a gluten-free bun. This dish was spiced with Zaatar Mediterranean seasoning, sweet onions and labneh yogurt sauce on the side and was very good. My husband loved his duck confit and frites which came with a vinegar base cabbage. The frites were addictive dipped in house made mayonnaise. We had to have dessert so tried the peach crisp with ginger ice cream and granola, very tasty and very sweet. The coconut tapioca with pineapple and sorbet was also very good and less sweet so you could really distinguish the individual flavors. Service was great, our server kept our water refilled and the food timing was perfect. We are also staying in the hotel and can recommend room 1, good size, very comfortable bed with down pillows and duvets, luxury organic toiletries and bathrobes. I came here for a business lunch and I was disappointed. I was rather shocked to see that I had to order fast food style at the counter and you were given a number and staff would deliver your food to the table. I felt that this experience for a higher end restaurant was not acceptable. The lunch menu was very limited and was lacking. I felt there was not enough hot items on the menu. The decor of the establishment was fun and it was a very open style of restaurant. I had the salmon Miso and it was ok I almost felt there was too much broth and the fish was almost boiled in it. First off Alma absolutely deserves 5 stars for food, although service is where they are lacking and therefore at 3 stars for this review. Alma is for enjoying a long extended meal and expect to spent 2+ hours for your dining experience if ordering more than one course. The food was amazing. My husband and I both did the restaurant week menu. The chickpea and broccoli salad was full of flavor and probably one of my favorite things on the menu. My husband tried the cheese plate and it was also fantastic. For main course we got Salmon and a pasta dish with a Sunnyside egg. The salmon was deliciously flavored but mushy. I probably wouldn't get it again but the past was fresh and had the perfect amount of sauce and seasoning. For dessert we had the brownie sundae and tapioca pudding. Again both were good, and no complaints with that. Service was terrible. We had reservations at 7 and weren't seated until 7:20. We were told continuously that "our server would be with us shortly" and she never appeared even 20 minutes later. The person pouring waters for everyone eventually came and took our order. A couple who looked a little on the money side (think suite and tie) were seated down next to us and our server immediately appeared to take their order (hmmmmm?). That was pretty disappointing. We didn't really see the server until the end when she removed a beer glass and gave us our check. You can make your own judgements about that scenario, but that is just plain terrible service. Alma is a gorgeous restaurant perfect for a date or business dinner. I was able to go to a business event on the restaurant side last week and all the rave reviews were true! The atmosphere was fancy but not to stuck up and every bit of food was delicious! I was able to order the beet and goat Cheese agnolotti, the duck 2 ways and the bread pudding and macaroon dessert that came with the $62 tasting menu. All the flavors of each dish complemented each other well and I couldn't be more satisfied at the end! Cafe Alma is well known to be amazing, and (nearly) the entire experience delivered: the craft cocktails, the atmosphere, the attention of the servers, the combination of elements in the dishes. The trouble was, it all didn't seem to add up to an amazing meal. The hamachi app had amazing presentation, but hardly anything in the flavors (whether the citrus or the cucumber) presented. The duck pate was RICH ... and I kept hoping for something on the plate to cut it. For the third course, the mahi-mahi had some many things going on - the crab was for what? - but the taste was limited to the dollops of chimichurri sauce. It all just seemed like a miss to me. After hearing mixed reviews from friends, I decided to go try it out myself. I was very pleasantly surprised! We opted for the set menu dining at the restaurant. The corn soup was nothing like what we were expecting. We were expecting some kind of corn purée, but this was a cold extraction of corn broth with fresh niblets of sweet corn layered with prawns and just a hint of heat from guajillo oil. Such depth in flavor! The grilled quail was absolutely lovely. It's so succulent and the char gave it such nice Smokey flavor. If you like grilled chicken for the skin portion and not the flesh portion(because it's obviously the best part) then this dish will be to your heart's content. I finished with duck two ways and my friend had the Arctic char. The duck two was good, but I'm not a fan of the chorizo(just personal preference). I had some of the Arctic char and oh boy - the butteriness of the flesh complimented against the crispy grill skin - superb! The ambiance of this place is so great! We went early for brunch on Sunday morning. It was peaceful and relaxing. We started with Latte's that were delightful and beautifully made. We ordered the Morty Egg Sandwich and substituted for a biscuit instead of an English muffin. The crispy potatoes that it comes with are sooo good! Great flavor and crunch. We also ordered the Baked Egg Strata with a side of avocado and oh my that was tasty. They have small portions but it was nice to not leave brunch super full. No nap needed afterwards ;) The downside to our experience was the service. Our server was not friendly and seemed to rush us out. Even the people who brought our dishes out were cold. It begins with university area parking, at times I am sure where the best option is the $9 valet, with few meters available at peak hours. However, once inside, it's a treat to the epicurean looking for exceptional flavors. The loose leaf chamomile tea is perfectly fresh and floral (see pictures attached to this review). For some reason, despite looking up the restaurant beforehand, I didn't realize that they specialized in prix-fixe, three-course menus ($52). All of the items can also be ordered a la carte as well. I got the three-course meal: Pork belly confit with rhubarb compote, arugula, and fennel vinaigrette - This was the best course. The three bite-size pieces of pork belly were salty and juicy and they were nicely paired with the rhubarb compote on top. Hominy grits and sweetbreads with glazed carrots, lime, and tomatillo sauce - Having never had sweetbreads before, I wanted to taste them. Having nothing to compare them to, I thought that the seasoned, lightly fried preparation worked well and the creaminess of the grits was a good complement. Braised lamb and ricotta gnocchi with spinach, smoked dashi, and shiitake - This was apparently one of their most popular dishes. Although the lamb was excellently cooked, the gnocchi didn't work for me. It was too soft and it essentially fell apart when I put it in my mouth. It was also tasteless. For dessert, I chose the milk chocolate torte with honey ganache, chcolate rye foam, and milk crisp. This was delicious! I ordered the half portion and midway through, I wished I'd ordered the full one. Restaurant Alma definitely offers unique dishes such as what I ate, as well as other items n the menu such as asparagus dumplings and rabbit and nettle agnolotti, and in general, they deliver on good food. Service was slow and the restaurant was far more casual than the prices suggest. While the food was good, nothing was amazing. I'm not sure that I would venture back here if I'm in the area again but given the glowing reviews, I'm glad that I tried it. read more

Honestly, I felt that the service here wasn't great. It felt like our waiter was a little impatient with us, and wanted us to leave as soon as possible. My friend had been seated before me, and as I was running late, she waited there for me for about 5 minutes or so. When I walked in, our waiter made a comment, "oh, you're FINALLY here", which I took lightly but was still a bit miffed about. I ordered the blueberry danish and some peppermint tea, and I enjoyed both, especially for a brunch catch-up with an old friend. My friend liked the scrambled eggs and potatoes she had. I do really like the location and the how cute the cafe itself looks. The environment is conducive to good conversation! Overall, my experience wasn't bad, and I'd definitely be willing to come back again to try other dishes. Well Restaurant Alma is some pretty good dining. Our friends have been raving about it for about two years so we finally got around to checking it out. The first thing to know is that Alma does a three-course prix fixe menu. So you get a menu that I take it rotates seasonally. The menu has three courses with four or five options under each. You select one from each column, and there you go. On our visit, it was $55 for the three-course meal, which does NOT include dessert. Fair warning: go hungry. It is a substantial amount of food. Also, not a large place. Definitely recommend reservations. While I was tempted to eat nothing but carbs all night, I thought I ought to at least try to eat a vegetable, so I ordered the bean salad for my first course. It was light and refreshing, and since it was placed over a base of sliced potatoes, I still got my carbs anyway. The beans were those awesome summer beans -- green and yellow mixed, with some greens and a herby vinaigrette type deal that was super tasty. I will mention here that the garlic shrimp was popular at our table, and I think I might go that way if I had to do it again. Super yummy, not to say that what I ordered was not. Very garlicy though, so maybe go with the beans if you're on a first date or something. For the second course, I ordered the spaghetti with poached egg. The menu description was a lot more fancy but that should be enough for you to figure it out. Hands down, the best thing I ate all night, including the many bites of other things that other people ordered. The pasta was perfect and coated in the most delicious creamy sauce. It seriously put alfredo to shame, and I flipping love alfredo sauce. There was flavor and texture and unctuousness, and when you added a perfectly poached egg on the top of the whole deal, it was really like one of those, "Could you give the two of us a few minutes alone?" type of dishes. Stupid etiquette prevented me from licking my plate. Third course, I chose steelhead, which for those of you not familiar is kind of like salmon. It was very good, served with micro thin slices of radish, more of those summer beans (good thing I like them) and some other greens. The sauce was kind of a cross between a sauce and a broth. Very tasty and expertly prepared. My husband got the other seafood option, the sturgeon, which was good, though I liked the steelhead better personally. Dessert looked good but not appealing enough for us to try to cram it down on top of all the other food, so our table collectively passed. Our waiter was very good. We got lots of attention, with full explanations. I was impressed with his wine knowledge and beer knowledge (note that the beer list is not huge, maybe half a dozen options. But passable.) He was super accommodating and answered all of our questions. Bonus points for knowing where the seafood was sourced and giving us a pretty decent description of salmon and why they swim upstream to spawn. He went above and beyond by bringing our table complimentary tiny dishes of plum sorbet because we were there celebrating my friend's birthday. He simply said that we couldn't leave without having something for dessert because we were celebrating. Hers of course came with a candle. Very sweet. Our tab was brought with one additional treat -- tiny mini perfect (and I mean like stupid perfect) lemon macaroons. They should just sell those things to go. Wow. One last note. We essentially shut the place down. With an 8 p.m. reservation and a 9 p.m. official close time, the staff not only did not rush us out the door but took the extra steps mentioned above to make sure my friend had a great birthday, even though it meant everyone had to stay later, more dishes were getting dirtied, etc. In all, we left pretty much at 10 p.m., but I didn't sense even the hint of resentment from the staff as they wished us a nice evening on our way out the door. My party of 3 tried their tasting menu, which includes 4 courses and one free course of bread, cheese, olives, and a small drink. Non alcoholic beverages are available. The dinner itself was $78 per seat and an additional $48 per seat for wine pairing. If you're coming here for dinners don't pass up on the wine. I'm not a huge fan of wine but the sommelier chooses fantastic wines to be paired with each dish. An 18% fee is automatically added. They have a very easy reservation process online, and parking isn't too hard to find in nearby streets. They dont have a strict dress code but I would definitely advise looking proper to not look out of place. read more

The coffee was so-so, the croissant had a good amount of butter, but didn't taste fresh. My gf complained that the mushroom Tartine she got displayed a whole new level of cooking, where beautiful produce is stripped completely of flavor :-/ After the james beard nominations came out this yr, we found out Alma made it to the semifinals for best restaurant, so wanted to give them another chance this weekend. We ended up having the 3-course tasting menu and a dessert. The beginning was actually very good. We got some beautiful aged parmesan as part of the initial small bites, and the Gewurztraminer my gf got was perfect. The food can be better though. Especially in 3 courses for 60+ bucks you expect some quality. Nothing wrong with the ingredients, the dishes just need to be rebalanced. Here's the individual rundown. First courses Butternut squash soup- prawns well cooked, squash is sweet. But way too sour, not enough salty. Just needs a dash of paprika and salt on top. 4 out of 5. Endive and poached pears- very good, esp the cheese fondue. just needs a punchier acidity from maybe a good Balsamic vinegar. 4/5 Second Chestnut bread pudding- well well, a savory bread pudding! It was pretty good actually. Could do with a bit more crunch and acidity. 4/5 Torchio pasta- an Alma-fan friend of mine loves the pasta here, so I was looking fwd to it. But it turned out pretty meh. Overall muted flavors. Mushrooms were better than last time, though. 3/5 Third 12-hr braised beef- meh again. Not tender and fall-apart enough, considering the 12-hr cook time! I make more tender braises in a pressure cooker anyday. 3/5 Pan roasted mahi mahi- flat tasting, no crunch elements at all. Fish cooked well but that's it. 2/5 Dessert We got the caramel coffee pot de creme. Very big serving.. of mediocre elements. Positives were the caramel coffee creme and black sesame meringue. Negatives, well, everything else. Also I can attest I'd make a better creme fraiche ice cream. 2/5 Overall, all the dishes can do with more roasted and acidic elements. Give Alma a miss if you haven't been there yet. There are many brunch places in the twin cities better than the Cafe, and a number of fine dining/small plate places (spoon and stable, colita, martina) better than the main restaurant. read more

To be honest, I didn't love the service here but the food was definitely good. I got a slight eyeroll and some attitude when I walked in on Sunday morning to order breakfast. The kitchen was turning over from quick grab and go to their full sit-down. I realize that my timing wasn't great, but you would have thought that I was asking for the world when I ordered a pastry, coffee, and yogurt with granola for the non-reservation seating part of the cafe. I'm sure that with reservations, and with better timing, I would have had a better experience here. I don't doubt that the food and quality of the restaurant is worthy of higher stars and praise; Alma was a place on my to-try list while I was visiting in Minneapolis. We've been fans of Alma's in-person dining experience for special occasions for years. Just tried their takeout dinner for two, and it was superb. Ordering and pickup couldn't have been easier. The five-course meal was carefully packed, and accompanied by a few bonus treats. The reheating instructions were perfect -- even the duck, which is prone to overcooking, came out flawlessly. Every morsel was delicious, and both sauces (one for the duck, one for roasted carrots) were divine. We wiped our plates clean with the rustic hearth bread. Yum! BEST SERVICE EVER. I've been to places where they give you little couches for your purses. Like little ornate chairs that your bag sits on next to your matching full sized chair. I've been to places where every course is brought out by a chorus of actors in $5,000 suits and it's placed in orchestra in front of the diners. Places, where the lighting changes... you get the idea. Daniel in NYC has always held a place in my heart for best service, but this place really shines and at a price point a fraction of what those other places cost. I studied some service stuff in Bschool and have wondered since then why upscale places don't implement stuff that should just be best practice. Well, this place does, and does it in spades. The front of house manager here is amazing. The food was all exceptional too. One dish was good and the rest were above and beyond what I expected. I could see some people saying the quantity is a bit light, but that's nit picking. I heard they are closing indoor dining for the Winter which brings me sadness. I would have come here quarterly for sure, which is rare for a place like this. However, I do understand with the Covid what not. In a city brimming with urban hipsterness, places like Alma Cafe aren't hard to find. This joint finds itself sitting between the boundary of a budget friendly college neighborhood and the Northeast of the Twin Cities re-branding its culinary image. Slightly more than a stone's throw from Stone Arch with valet parking the establishment cannot be faulted for convenience of location. The ambiance is crowded but hip, tall tables too small and booths stiff and wooden. Seating is available at the bar if your girth promises not to hinder moving patrons and other parts. The coffee's good, often more acidic than earthy. A couple of brews on tap so beverages aplenty. They have only a handful of brunch cocktails, but they are good. The food menu is however very limited with a few salads, burgers and plates being the options. The vibe here is either a working or a liquid lunch. I've had the burgers mostly and have had varying experiences from very good to mediocre. For the portion sizes, some dishes seem a tad overpriced but seem decent when pitched against the sister restaurant's rate card. The service overall is polite but not necessarily prompt. On busy brunch days (which is most weekends) expect to wait for your orders. Overall I'd say this is a good place for a meal or coffee where eating a full meal is not necessarily a priority but a relaxed setting, fancy drinks and a well lit ambiance are. read more

First of all, I love Alma. The cafe has an amazing atmosphere, fantastic food, and great coffee. My favorite combo is a miel and the turkey salami sandwich. However, it has been very understaffed lately and the quality of interactions with staff has severely dropped because of this. The staff seems so stressed and I just feel so bad for them. I was really surprised by how many have mentioned they needed a second job in order to survive. I thought Alma had sustainable wages for employees, so maybe they need to give their staff "sustainable" hours. Overall the experience lately is getting less and less personal and feeling more and more like a Starbucks when it comes to ordering. Alma gets busy so I hope they start scheduling more staff so they aren't stretched so thin. Take care of your workers, Alma! They're the people that keep your business afloat. read more
