I went to Alma for breakfast in their cafe area. While their menu is pretty small for breakfast time, there is good variety in what they do offer. I had the classic breakfast plate with pork sausage. It was a great serving size and I wasn't able to finish all of it by myself. But that might have something to do with the cookie and China breakfast tea I had. We had a product release celebration dinner here. It's a cute place. Not very large with a nice ambiance. The lighting is low in the front of restaurant. We were in a private room in the back. We had a group of about 20. There was a smaller tables put together to make one long table in the middle of the room. It was a bit difficult for everyone to interact. We were able to interact in smaller groups. The service great from the beginning. We came in and checked in at the front where we had the option to check our coats. We were escorted to the back where we were served in a private room. This would be a great space with a group of a certain size. Maybe max 15. We had about 25. The tables in the middle of the room made it a bit difficult to socialize before dinner. And having one long table made it difficult to socialize with those not next to you during dinner. Alma is the bar to which we hold all fine dining in the Twin Cities. We have eaten here on countless celebratory occasions and recently did the dinner for two at home and it was perfection. Easy reheat/finishing instructions, with their excellent house dressing on the salad, ample portions of duck two ways, and a tasty dessert. We also got several bags of "bonus" treats including several of their scones and a blueberry breakfast pastry that were perfect the next morning. Their coffee and bread is delicious and we yearn for the days when we can return to dining in here, but in the meantime, please support this excellent restaurant and coffee shop. They also offer monthly provisions with all sorts of yummy goods that we'd like to try at some point and wine to go. We made reservations for dinner in the restaurant for our anniversary. They called a few days in advance to confirm our reservation, ask about any allergies and thank us for spending our anniversary with them. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated right away. My biggest quibble here is the price point - and don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying $$$ for a special occasion, which is what my dinner at Alma was (celebratory meal for a new job). But $62 for 3 small courses is...a lot. That's $20+ a course and the first two were like 4 bites. One course was literally a piece of grilled bread with pesto and mozzarella. Another was 6 little pillows of pea pasta with three tiny pieces of pancetta. The food was very good but not mind-blowingly inventive and at that price, I expected either more substantial portions or lux ingredients. Especially given that the tasting menu is the only option. They have a weird separate menu called "share" with some additional apps you can buy, which seems to suggest others have not felt sated after the tasting meal, but I wasn't in the mood to pay $8 more for ricotta & crackers or antipasti. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was lovely - elegant and relaxed. Wine list is great with reasonably priced glass and bottle options - we did the pairing, and again, I was scratching my head a little at the pricing. It's $32 for 3 4-oz pours aka 2ish glasses. Steep. So for two people doing the wine pairing and declining dessert, we spent $260. It's fine dining; I did not expect to be stuffed and stumbling out but we left the restaurant neither full nor buzzed. We came here full with excitement for a birthday celebration because of what we heard about the restaurant, however our disappointment grew greater and greater as each course dish came out. We tried the $85/person prix-fixe menu which has about 4-5 courses. While appetizers and soup were interesting and the 12-hour braise beef was not bad, the white shrimp pasta was horrible and poorly made: some rigatoni sticking together and some other breaking apart, the shrimp is tiny, dry and taste like from a frozen pack, not to mention there were only 2-3 shrimps in the plate. Another horrible dish is the sturgeon fish, the fish itself tasted fishy and stiff, we can hardly finish one piece. Lastly came the dessert raspberry eclair which we thought can make up some of our disappointment but it was just dry and tasteless. We were also dismayed by the service we received: we reflected our disappointment to our server but received no response nor any follow-up during the whole time at the restaurant. We were thanked for the feedback and was handed the full bill that automatically added a 21% surcharge that we have no choice but to pay. Decided to splurge and go out to dinner here on a whim and it was well worth the $$$. The dining area is very intimate with dim lighting and a classic elegance. There is an adjacent cafe perfect for a more casual experience but if you want the full on experience I suggest making a reservation for their dining area. We decided to do the tasting course but ordered our own wines since we wanted to try a a few selections we were intrigued about. The first course my friend ordered some sort of savory soup (?) with egg and caviar and I had a bite and nearly melted in my seat- buttery perfection. I had a meat dish that was basically over-glorified sandwich meat with a fancy crouton on a platter- it tasted just fine but overall compared to everything else it was pretty average. Second course my friend had a dish with duck liver and I had the sweet pea agnolloti which was refreshing yet savory- perfectly prepared noodles with a cream based and salty pancetta. Last, but definitely not least aka my favorite dish, was the duck two-ways- one duck was more traditionally cooked, very moist and just peeling apart with goodness while the other duck was a little crispier on the side and its pairing with the nuts was ingenious. When I read Ravena F's review, my first though was "wow" this place sounds perfect and since we are heading that direction and our first night would be a free one, maybe we can check it out. But as you well know, often times logistics and laziness play a big part in keeping you from doing things you mean to do. My wife and I arrived on separate airlines into Minneapolis roughly around the same time. We were both cranky as neither of us had eaten. After picking up our rental car and then heading to our hotel we started discussing dinner options. TGIF? Chilis? We were starving and at this point anything sounded good. I then remembered reading about Alma and decided to inquire at the front desk and ask how far away it was from our hotel. Turns out we were only a couple miles away! Before heading out I called the restaurant to make sure they could take us and were told to just come on out. When we arrived (around 8) the dining room was just about empty. There was only one other table of two and then us.We found out later that it was State Fair weekend and most places are slow during this time. However as the evening went on, the place did start to fill up. The menu is set up as a pre fix but are able to order as single dishes if you like. As mentioned, it's $45 for three courses and is an excellent value considering the quality. But believe it or not, we chose not to go this route and just piece milled out dinner. My wife and I shared a pesto and tomato salad. I usually do not get worked up over a dinner salad, but this one was amazing! The tomatoes tasted as if they were freshly picked from a backyard and were accompanied by thinly sliced new potatoes and marinated red peppers. We were in the mood for a sparkling, but the only one they had by the glass was a Spanish Cava. It was delicious! hints of apple and earth, very Champagne like and at $9 a glass a total steal! For my main I went with the pork tenderloin. One of my pet peeves is that many restaurants tend to over cook pork. I am one of those who prefer mine medium rare. When it arrived, that is exactly how it came out. Score! It was served over a sweet corn chowder and jalapeno corn bread. Every bite was mouth watering. My wife ordered two small plates, the calamari which I did not try as I am "allergic" and the smoked chicken cannelloni which scored an OMG! Our wine selection was a Spanish Petalos. I had never heard of the grape, but it was absolutely delicious. It reminded both of us a big pinot (think Goldeneye from the Anderson Valley) and for the price ($55) was again an amazing value. Alma uses Reidel wine glasses which being a glass snob was happy to see. We finished our dinner off with a cheese course. They served the cheese with a chutney and nectarines drizzled in honey. This made for lots of fun mixing and matching our cheeses. Along with our cheese. They also brought us out a complimentary glass of Muscat. A very nice gesture in my book. There is a lot of creativity in the menu, a focus on seasonal ingredients, food that is casual but still very refined, an integration of global ingredients, and a well thought out space. Everything I had was good, maybe even very good, but I still felt there were one or two things with each course that could have been better. And maybe if they were, I would have left thinking Restaurant Alma is an exceptional restaurant rather than just a very good one. Their amuse was very good--crisp greens, crunchy tortilla chips, a sweet and creamy corn flan, and a great sauce that had a distinct heat. There were great things about their pork belly starter. The pork belly was very tender and moist without being overly fatty and they achieved a slight crispiness on the exterior that many restaurants do not produce. The distinct miso taste reminded me that so many restaurants list miso on their menu but do not deliver on the flavor. The garnish of apple, cabbage and radish was ordinary though and there was way too much of it--something you would expect to find at a lesser restaurant. The chilled sweet corn soup had a great corn flavor as well as a thickness and creaminess that you just want to have more and more of. The cherry tomato garnish provided a nice contrast, but I was not a huge fan of the smoked salmon. It delivered a noticeably smoky flavor, but it was more cooked than I was expecting (it did not have the satisfying moist texture of a lot of smoked salmon). Their grilled quail was very good. The quail meat was very juicy; nice flavor too. The skin had a great char so there was a unique smoky exterior to the quail that I have not tasted often. Alma has been one of the darlings of the Twin Cities' dining scene for quite some time now and I have enjoyed my meals here over the years. The ambiance is cozy and toes the line between upscale and Midwestern casual (though leans more toward the former). The basic premise is to select your own set meal from a number of different seasonal items on the menu (though a la carte is an option as well). While not every plate here has knocked it out of the park for me, I have still enjoyed each visit and find the value to be on par with many other restaurants of its caliber. I confess to knowing little about wine, but they seem to have a well curated list and I've never had a problem finding a beer from the relatively small list that I enjoy. Service has always been very knowledgeable of the menu and those with allergy concerns, etc. shouldn't need worry, as it's been pretty obvious the waitstaff are well versed when it comes to the menu. The airy, pretty room and the great service were bonuses. My only gripe: $10 valet parking on a weeknight, and the valet parked my car no more than thirty feet from the valet stand. This review is for the cafe, which has a great breakfast with creative options that are less expensive than they should be. I was in town with a friend and we went here for brunch. You order first, then get your coffee, then pick a table and they bring your food to your table. The coffee is outstanding, really great. And so was brunch. My brioche French toast was amazing. Bits of apple and nuts really added a lot, but it was all fantastic, and only $9. My buddy had eggs, toast, potatoes and bacon, and they were all really good. Plus the bacon was Berkshire, which was really awesome. I love Berkshire. They could have charged us $10 more and it would have seemed about right. For the price we paid, it felt like a steal. After multiple attempts to get a reservation on a week end , we decided to go on a week day and went here on Thursday night & the place was packed. I expected it to be little more cozy and upscale , but it was more casual , small & little congested. Nothing great about the interior.They did have small bar in the front. They offer three course for about 55$ with lot of vegetarian & gluten free options.They have fantastic wine selection with some beer/Cocktail options. I ordered hipster burning for my cocktail and it was ok. They have a bit of open kitchen concept and we were seated right in middle of the restaurant and in front of the entrance to the kitchen.Though it was not too bad , it was way too busy from our table. They have no cell phone talk policy so keep that in your mind. Our server was good not great like the one next table who took his time to explain the different menu options and the source of the food. Coming to the food , i ordered SMOKED WHITEFISH & ARUGULA , GRILLED "RED" QUAIL & DUCK TWO WAYS. My first course fish was moistful , tender and well cooked. It came with vinaigrette , potato chips and jalapenos. Though all of them tasted odd separately it tasted when eaten together & it was cohesive.i never understood why they had chips in there but the texture of it was really good. My second course quail was well cooked and flavorful. Rice Fritters that came with that was little burnt for me. My third course duck was hands down the best duck i have had in here MSP. Kale & brioche that came along complimented it very well. Over all the all the three course had some unique flavors and nice combination. Definitely a must try in terms of food. If only they had a better atmosphere/space inside this will a 5 star for sure. They dont have a parking and you have to use street parking .During week end they will have valet parking. Alma is perfection. Seriously. I first visited 10 years ago with my now husband of 8 years. I remember being blown away by the food. We moved out of town, and had not visited again since. Well, I'm back in town and went to Alma to celebrate my birthday last night. What can I say? Alma defines what amazing food is, what great service is, and what every dining experience should be! Food: We each opted for a different tasting menu (and shared a few bites of our dishes), and the highlights for me where the Salmon Tartare, the Garlic Scape Naan, and the Roasted Chicken. Simply delicious! Even complementary dish to start our meal was outstanding (a rabbit salad). Once I tasted that, I knew I'd be in for an unforgettable birthday meal. Service: Outstanding. I never had an empty glass of water, plates were removed expediently, and I never really noticed my server, which in my book is what epitomizes excellent service. I had everything I needed, without feeling like my server ever imposed. As an extra touch, I got a candle on my dessert - my server must have noticed it was my birthday by looking at my ID to serve me wine. Seriously - those guys and gals are TOP NOTCH. It's hard to see if you haven't been there before - look for a door next to Dunn Bros. $50 prix fixe menu is pretty much the standard, but you can order individual plates as well. It appears that it changes frequently as none of the Yelp photo items were on the menu at that time. Bf and I ended up with 6 different choices, so we could maximize our sampling. Alma has been on my list of places to try out for years - and so thrilled that I was able to try out this well loved spot. We visited on a Wednesday night - we had a reservation but there seemed to be a handful of tables open + plenty of open seats at the bar. We enjoyed their winter prix fixe menu - 3 courses with the options to add on a wine pairing, an appetizer or dessert. From the winter menu some of our favorites included the butternut squash soup, lobster bread pudding and the sea scallops. Every dish we had was flavorful and felt fairly generous in terms of portion for a prix fixe menu restaurant. We also tried the Sorghum Old Fashioned, Fennel Sezerac and the "My Friend Lorena" cocktails - all of which were super flavorful and booze forward in flavor. A few pros: -Great food - very flavorful and fresh -Loved the ability to add on a few options - like the appetizers or desserts -Impressive, flavorful cocktails -Offer a coat check at the entrance - which seems to be a rare feature A few cons: -I was disappointed in the level of service - at a higher end restaurant I expected to get a more robust tour of the menu. Our server didn't offer any explanation of the dishes until we asked for more details.
