Every time I've gone the bread has been wonderful, I'd recommend going the earliest you possibly can for the best stuff. The only negative I can say is the service depends on who's staffed at the moment and the ambiance is generally small town store vibes. The condescending attitude from one of the negative reviews is astounding- yes many people from Hollister grew up on it but if you don't know Hollister there's a high immigrant population. Simply saying all the people who enjoy it "don't know better" is simply false and ignores everyone who enjoys it despite not being from Hollister. I can agree that possibly the quality (especially in service) has gone down since the original owner passed but I've never had a bad piece of pan from there yet! It's a local favorite for a reason, if you want fresh though- don't buy the baggies on the counter. They're specifically yesterday's pan and offered cheaper as such. The prices are simply the best though, never paid more than 30$ for a full week of pan! read more

I really wanted to like the pan dulce here since there isn't many "Mexican panaderías" in Hollister. With that said, this place was a Total disappointment. I think for people that grew up in Hollister and don't know any better, this may be their norm for pan. I gave this place three tries and the pan is simply not good. I grew up always loving el nopal bread, i moved 1 hour and 30 minutes away and everytime i come down to hollister to visit family i stop for bread, the last two times customer service has been HORRIBLE AND RUDE. They never have sleeves for the coffee cups so be ready to burn your hands if you grab a cup of coffee, I have brought it to their attentionMONTHS ago and asked when or if they would be getting them and they couldn't even answer my question. Last 2 visits, they don't have creamer either and just tell you to get the milk (eventhough it was done, too) even after being told I don't drink milk.... the bread is good, except for the bigotes, all I taste is lard. The conchas and stuffed breads are good, though. As for customer service, it's eh. Not good, kinda bad sometimes but never horrible, I guess. Not sure that Hollister has anything else to offer as far as pan dulce (I'm not from here) so I guess I won't be eating pan dulce anymore unless I go to Watsonville where they treat you like family when you go into a panaderia. read more

Nopal bakery back in the days was way better. Ever since the original owner passed away the quality of the bread it's not same. Associates are friendly and courteous. The new owner needs to bring back the quality of the bread back. I go to Gilroy for my conchas and bolillos. read more

This is by far the best Mexican bakery in California! I've lived in San Diego for the past four years and was unable to locate a bakery with pan dulce equivalent to theirs..... even that close to Mexico. Their pan is so moist and fresh it's almost scary. The tortillas are also the best in town, lines out the door in the evening prove it. read more

Very disappointed with their service. I placed an tortilla order Friday 6/26 for pick up on Saturday 6/27 at 3pm. I paid the order Friday, went Saturday morning to leave the cooler for the tortillas at 7am. They confirmed pick up time at 3pm. I show up (mind you it's my 30th bday) and the lady tells me that the tortillas weren't made! That the OWNER didn't show up to make them! How freaking unprofessional is this! The old lady in the morning was super rude when I dropped off the cooler, and to top it off the owner fails to accomplished one job! Well let me tell you, they Definitely lost me as a customer. Every now and then I come across a place that just hits every mark for me. And I've been known to say that I sometimes wish I didn't tell anyone about a place (in this case a bakery) because I want to keep it my little secret. Well this is one of those gems! I love their fresh made tortillas and assortment of delicious pastries. This may sound strange but the first time I visited El Nopale I noticed these packages of fluffy white, saucer shaped flour tortillas and I reached over to pick up a pack and they were warm. I'm used to buying them in stores and they're always cold. It made me smile to know how super fresh they were!!! So delicious, I bought 5 packages to share. Everyone agreed they are just like Grandma used to make. The corn tortillas are another treat. I love how they fry up when making them for tostadas, tacos and chips!! But don't take my word for it...try this place out for yourself. Just be sure to leave me some tortillas and pastries when you go. Staff is very friendly and helpful. This is the home of the best conchitas and Mexican pastries...El Nopal, make awesome corn and flour tortillas, they have an assortmesnt of american french and Mexican pasteries, all at amazing prices. But when is come to conchitas, this baker is the mark/standard other bakeries, need to meet. I have visited many Mexican Panadarias , only one in Los Banos as come close to El Nobal.. the .tenderness, soft crust, chewy sweetness, all combined to make this a world famous recipe. Grew up in Hollister and every time I'm in town, I go straight to El Nopal. I was in town this weekend to pick up my favorite buttery "cuernos " when I got home to eat one, it was stale. Tried the second and same! Not the first time but thought I got a bad batch before. After telling my family about this they informed me that the pan dulce hasn't been good for a while. What a true disappointment this is as this place "was" my favorite for Mexican bread. Won't be going back. :( read more

I don't even like Conchas, all of them that I have ever tried tasted old, crusty, dry and rock hard. Not from this place, they are surprisingly soft and delicious! The other bread I liked was the cuernitos with butter, kinda tastes like a croissant but better. We even once stayed up all night and waited unitl they opened at 5am. We got there a few minutes early so we waited in the car. It was still dark outside. Right at 5:00am we saw cars pulling up slowly from all sides. One by one people started to come out of the shadows and head to the front door like zombies. Another Hollister treasure except for a basic customer service of pricing. I go there for the corn or flour tortillas. Seems like they are always warm like they've just been made. Tortillas don't get any fresher than this unless you make 'em yourself. Yummy and cheap! However, folks, I'm downgrading them from 5 stars to three due to the lack of pricing or names on ANYTHING. Two big glass cases full of interesting things and no clue for the customers as to what or how much they are. This isn't a roadside stand; it's a storefront business that's been here forever. Best Mexican bakery I have EVER had the good fortune of visiting. And it happens to be in my hometown! My favorite purchase are by far the "cuernos," large delicious buttery, toasted croissants. Seriously the best thing on earth. Anytime I go home to visit my parents i.e. do my laundry I stock up on as many cuernos they have in stock, literally. And everything is SO inexpensive!! Also good are the sweet "conchas" and their "magdalenas" among many other things. I'm getting hungry just writing about them. read more
