We enjoyed a date night and birthday dinner at Alpenglow Bistro. This spot was highly recommended for their fondue for two, which completely exceeded our expectations. The cheese fondue was substantial, served with bread, apples, cornichons, cocktail onions, chunks of ham, two different kinds of sausages and assorted potatoes, all gorgeously presented on wooden slab. The French onion soup, which we shared as an appetizer was also delicious. Great wine and my fiancé sampled the Vermonter cocktail, a potent concoction of bourbon, sweet vermouth and angostura bitters. Very strong and flavorful! We finished the evening with a slice of apple strudel, complete with a sparkler candle for my belated birthday. Great presentation! The decor and atmosphere here is stunning with fur throws over the seat backs, roses, candlelight and Alpine themes like antler wall sconces. Bathrooms were very clean and decorated with cute retro skiing photos. After we praised the fondue as exceptional, our server offered to bring out the owner so we could meet her. Our whole experience here was very strong until the end of our meal when then service slowed down, which the server explained was due to a large party upstairs, so it took awhile for us to get our dessert. Not a huge deal. While the owner was great to chat with, she then asked if we wanted to enjoy our dessert at the bar so they could seat a larger party using our table and the one next to us (awkward, especially after spending over $200 on dinner, no thanks). Also, we did not appreciate the 2.5 "operational fee" added to our check! Were it not for these last two points, this would have been a five star review because the atmosphere, food and drinks were great! read more

Amazing atmosphere and food. Quaint little restaurant with elevated German food. It is very pricey so prepared to spend some $$ here. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated right away. They don't have a kid's menu, but they have plenty of kid friendly food to choose from. I love how the dinning area has stone wall and chairs with white fur on them. Great romanic place for dates or special occasions. There were 5 of us and we ordered the pork schnitzel which was perfectly pan fried and seasoned ($36). The ham and cheese crepe was $22, small but very good... I was still left hungry so we also ordered the beet spatzel ($18), it came in a bowl with goat cheese , so good. The chicken entree(forgot the name) was big enough to share by my kids. It was cooked with skin on, which I prefer, crispy skin and tender meat, sooooo good. It was supposed to come with parsnip puree but they were nice enough to sub it with mashed potatoes for my kids. It was devoured! We also shared 2 deserts: apple strudel and bread pudding. They were good, but not the best we've had... For $16 each, maybe this can be skipped. But overall, great meal! Oh forgot to mention they have an apple schnapps shot for $5 that comes in a little Dasboot shot glass. So yummy!! A must try! read more

This gem just gets better and better. Once again, I had the most incredible dinner. The Black Seanad!! The special salad!! (The freshest, crunchiest lettuce you have ever tasted!). The asparagus and their version of a potato pancake(the best I've ever had). And we even then indulged in a hazelnut chocolate crepe!!! This place is so cozy! So welcoming. Amazing food!! Pros- excellent food, thoughtfully prepared and creative- Cons- small portions, high prices. Worst of all- and my biggest pet peeve. If you're gonna charge over $20 for a drink don't short pour me. Martinis should be a 3 ounce pour- fill it up to the rim of the glass. When you hand somebody a martini and it's a half inch from the rim. That's a problem, fill your drinks up. I also had some specialty tequila drink and it was like a glass of juice- maybe an ounce over ice, what a waste, absolute waste. What an excellent spot! We had our anniversary dinner at Alpenglow Bistro while visiting Wilmington. The atmosphere was wonderful-and the staff was super friendly and helpful. We shared the charcuterie and fromage plate--it was perfectly composed and we loved the cheese offerings. My husband had the trout and and I had the mussels and both were delicious. We tried this restaurant for the first and last time. The service was good, and the atmosphere was loud but that was not the problem. First we ordered a Hugel wine which was excellent and served at the correct temperature. It was downhill after that. The whole menu was overpriced, but since it was a German Swiss restaurant we ordered the FONDUE $75.00. The portion of meat on the fondue was so sparse. The platter consisted mostly of tiny apple and pear bits, 3 brussel sprouts, 2 onion pieces and 2 tiny red potatoes and mostly hard over toasted bread. What a disappointment. When it came to desert the meal got worse. The Schwarzwalder Kirsch Torte was not a torte not even a piece of cake. It was the size of a tiny muffin, one cherry and buttercream, no where near what it should be. I even asked the server if the cherries were marinated in kirsch. But there was only one on the top not in the middle of the cake. What a further disappointment. The place is over priced and not worth going to. The food does not represent the German Swiss Experience. read more

The food was utterly flavorless, the service was incredibly slow, and everything was horribly overpriced for such terrible food. The ambiance is the only redeeming thing about this place. Have a place up at Mount Snow so usually don't eat in Wilmington. We all decided to try a new place and fortuitously, we were only able to get reservations at a place named Alpenglow. It looked great online so we booked. This place is FANTASTIC. To start, the front of the house was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Jeff, the bartender, server and entertainer was above and beyond and makes a mean cocktail. Suggested multiple items off the menu and was spot on. The kitchen did an amazing job. The food came out at the perfect times and was presented beautifully. The atmosphere is cozy, comforting yet very upscale. Hard to pull off all three but they did it. My grandfather was a German butcher from the Bronx and I have skied the alps through Zermatt, Saas Fe and Sass Grund - The surprise was finding an excellent German & Alp style restaurant in Wilmington Vermont. The food was superb. The Wienerschnitzel was amazing and brought me back to my Grandfather's cooking. The Bratwurst was delicious with a hot pretzel. The chef here is top notch and incredible. We think this place deserves a Michelin star -- we have dined at Wallse in Manhattan (which has 1 Michelin star) and loved our food there and felt similarly about our meal at Alpenglow Bistro as well. The service was super hospitable, friendly, welcoming. From our trip here, we enjoyed our food here the best and can't wait to return! Also I left my bag here and they were kind enough to call me and stay until I retrieved it which I was so thankful for since I don't live in Wilmington and was going to leave early the next morning. I recently had a chance to revisit this charming restaurant and was so happy I did! I sat at the beautiful, intimate bar and ordered a delicious pear cocktail (The Alpenglow) from the friendly, expert bartender Raquel. I went on to enjoy the weinerschnitzel which was cooked to perfection. Everyone was so friendly and authentic and I felt like I had been invited into an intimate European apres ski. It is a bit pricey $189.00 for 1 appetizer , 2 meals, 2 deserts & 3 drinks overall $250.00 with tip but now a days it tougher to find quality food so paying more is sometimes worth it. They lost one star due to the chef not willing to let us sample the foundo cheese sauce before ordering it. At $70.00 we did not want to order it not knowing if we would like it, just a teaspoon taste. The chef said no to our request. So we ordered other options on the menu. 5 minutes later the table next to us was served the foundo. So the chef was already making the cheese sauce but couldn't send out a teaspone for us to try, this probably sounds petty but at the prices there charging the chef should be a little more accommodating on a small request like this. The place looks great on the inside and the service was warm and attentive. The drinks were strong but food was just ok with the exception of the mushroom spatezel which was yummy. The chief complaint was with the meat. The charcuterie board had 3 salamis, of which two were grey. My sister and her husband ordered filet - medium and medium rare. Both were rare and too raw to eat. They never send food back but I insisted because they already didnt eat the meat from the charcuterie board. My husband and I are self-proclaimed foodies, and it takes a lot to impress us as far as quality is concerned. Went so well with the vibe we wanted. We opted to do the fondue option and were surprised at how much food came with it and how full we were. The food was delicious and steak cooked perfectly. We ordered espresso martinis as part of dessert and they had 2 options- light or dark. The attention to detail they have here is truly what makes it such a wonderful place. First time we stopped in while up in West Dover Vt. Called to get reservations a few hours later for Sunday Brunch. We sat out on the front porch under a shady tree and enjoyed the 74 degree day with a couple friends. The ladies chose some savory crepes and inventive cocktails from some unique offerings. I didn't see the same old Benedict's and pancakes that are often on brunch menus. The guys picked the beer brats. The food was presented on thin slates -there could be an issue with drips flowing under the tasty side salad and German potato salad which came with the entrees -especially if the table isn't flat. I loved my fresh crepe filled with grilled mushrooms and greyere-spinach was left out per my request (I m supposed to avoid spinach and kale per my kidney stone issues) everything was tasty. (And not salty) I loved my Alpenglow signature drink - a very pleasant pear martini. Hubby enjoyed the beer choices. They have a great wine list too. The indoor decor is ski chic the staff is bright and attentive prices are high but the chef deserves it for doing things that you aren't going to see every where else. The only issue on the porch was the street noise from 18 wheelers and lots of motorcycles on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. ( yes there was a detour which is not the norm- well the motorcycles are). My husband and I decided to spend a very rare date night out at Alpenglow, and the whole experience was above and beyond in every way! We made a reservation for the more casual pub space downstairs, and sat at a lovely high-top table. The atmosphere was cozy and fun; it felt comfortable and relaxed, but still special. We got the braised pork belly and the german potato salad as appetizers; the pork belly was prepared perfectly, absolutely melting in our mouths, and the potato salad was the perfect accompanying dish. We shared the German bier bratwurst as an entrée, and it was just what we'd hoped for. I had their signature cocktail, The Alpenglow, and it was DELICIOUS! Perfectly balanced, light, and lovely. I wish I'd snapped some photos, but I was too wrapped up in the delicious food and drink, and my lovely dining partner (that was another thing; even though there were other diners in the space, it somehow still felt private, and we talked easily through the whole visit). Alpenglow nails the near impossible trifecta of great food, super ambiance, and outstanding service! We've had some of our best meals in the Valley there and will continue to go back. Our first time back this winter our waitress remembered our drink orders and where we sat the last time we were there! Nothing but good things to say.
