Ok, so Alpine Retreat was the worst experience. From the service, the atmosphere to the food. Restaurant is very dirty / dusty on surfaces that apparently don't get used often. It was not busy and there are only 12 tables with 3 waitresses. Our waitress was an older lady who was a bit hard of hearing which is not ideal. She only came to our table 1 time and that was to take our order. I had to call her over to get another drink. Then someone else brought our appetizer. Sorry 2 times, then she brought our food and we never saw her again. The prime rib was cordy and tough. My filet which is pictured was supposed to be medium and it came well done and dry. Then my shrimp was sitting on the plate in the aujus so the breading was soggy. We only had the opportunity to tell all of this to the hostess who came to clear our plates. She did comp us our appetizer but it was too late. This is the first time we did not tip our server, ever. Should have gone to Johnny Manhattens. Ruined our anniversary dinner. Now we are home disappointed.

Second time here in the last couple of months…read more Food: As much as I love the history of this place, the beautiful woods surrounding it, and the charm of the building, I have been very disappointed by the quality of the food. Unfortunately, this second dinner was even worse than the first. The rice was undercooked, the short ribs were dry, and the scallops were gritty. I realize that, for some people, the Buy One, Get One promotion is a big draw. However, I suspect that the menu prices are inflated to offset the BOGO savings, so it doesn't end up being much of an actual benefit. My wish is that they would focus on improving the quality and consistency of the food and charge prices that appropriately cover their costs while still allowing them to make a profit. I don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon, which is sad because there is so much to like about the location and atmosphere.

We had a group of 12, and we're sure to make a reservation, because boy was is busy on a Friday night! Especially around the holidays, because the holiday decor just adds an extra special feel to this already rustic, unique restaurant. The staff let us know they'd put us in a quieter area, due to my grandma, but unfortunately that didn't end up happening. I'll say though, we arrived to a packed restaurant at 5:45pm and by 8pm the place was pretty cleared out! Seems most popular for a happy hour and early super-type crowd. I'd been here once before but this was my first time dining in for food, so I was excited to try out their menu. They offer a hell of a deal for buy-one-get-one entrees! Note their entrees are upwards of $30-50 on average, so if you take this deal you're saving a pretty penny. Here you'll find all of the meat and seafood options to try. In the end I landed on the shrimp & scallop stir fry and boy was it good. Scallops were cooked just right and the flavor was on point. I also had to of course try my husband's steak and it was fantastic. Also fantastic was our server, Shaun. He took wonderful care of our table, and even gave us a great rundown of the entire dessert tray. He knew his stuff! We ended up ordering a handful of sweet treats to end the evening. All in all, this place should be on everyone's list to try!

First time here…read more Food: It was a Friday evening, around 8:00, and we decided to try some of the fish specials. I ordered the Pan-Seared Walleye, and she chose the Lake Perch Fry. Since our entrées included access to the salad bar, we started there. The appearance of the salad bar was disappointing. I realize it was later in the evening, but there were literally salad bar fixings all over the place. Some items were mixed together, some had spilled onto the enclosure, and there was food on the floor as well. Much of what was offered looked like it had come straight out of a can. The walleye wasn't bad. However, the mixed vegetables were a pile of mush, and although I had requested the potato pancake be extra crispy, it was still undercooked in the middle. The perch fry was okay, but nothing special. For dessert, she ordered the Brandy Alexander, and I had the LemonBerry Cake. The Brandy Alexander was very good, while the LemonBerry Cake was mediocre. Service: Our server did a nice job getting us settled in. Water and drinks arrived promptly, and they were friendly and pleasant throughout the evening. However, they became involved in a lengthy conversation at another table, so getting our check took quite a while. Atmosphere: To be honest, the place looks a bit run-down and could probably benefit from some TLC. Since it was later in the evening, there weren't many other diners, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. The view of the lake through the windows is spectacular and makes it a great place to watch the sunset. I wish the food had been better. Unfortunately, this isn't a place we are likely to return to.

Luckily for us they recommended Bilda's Friess Lake Pub. What an awesome place. Small, friendly, with a large selection of beers to choose from, and our food was outstanding. Were immediately told by other customers (obviously regulars) that we had to have the smoked wings. Great call. They were perfect. Very casual place. Nothing fancy but very comfortable. Have a great outside area also where they have bands and comfortably host large groups (a large group of local teachers were there celebrating the last day of school). Highly recommend

Service: There was an issue with our order. Apparently, it did not "print" back in the kitchen. We ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes before someone figured out what had happened. They acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and comped our drinks. Atmosphere: They now have outdoor entertainment every evening, and there is plenty of seating to choose from. The traffic around the roundabout intersection can get noisy, but I think they simply turn up the volume to compensate. A good spot for smoked meats and other sandwiches.

To…read moreme, they do a lot of things right, but there are still a few "unforced errors" that keep this from being a truly great meal. Food: Once again, the star of the show was the brisket. It is just so very good. I ordered the Panzanella Salad topped with brisket. The salad itself was excellent, and the addition of the brisket made it an outstanding choice. Our table shared an order of the Texas Twinkies. They were delicious, but definitely on the spicy side. In fact, some of us were literally in tears! So, know what you're getting. The others ordered the Mac & Cheese with BBQ Chicken, the Sloppy Joe, and the Double Smashburger. Everyone enjoyed their meals, but no one was raving about them...except me and the brisket. I tried the Smashburger and found it a bit underwhelming. The beef didn't have much flavor, and there wasn't enough char to create those delicious lacy edges that make a smashburger special. The side of haystack onion rings was very good: hot, flavorful, and generously portioned. Service: Our server was polite, but not especially friendly. Even though there were very few people in the restaurant, there were a couple of times when I had to flag them down for things like more water or another drink. A couple of our drinks, including a Bourbon Old Fashioned and a Bloody Mary, were served with an elaborate smoked presentation using a wooden smoke box. It's an interesting idea, but it felt a bit over the top. Atmosphere: I like the feel of the dining room. It's small and full of character. Our table in the corner was a tight fit, but once we were seated, it was comfortable enough. Tip: Get the brisket!

As soon as we were seated, we were served a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and slightly warm. The salsa was good, although I personally prefer a chunkier style. To start, my wife ordered a Dos Equis, and I tried the house Paloma. It was an excellent cocktail, although at $12.48 it felt a little pricey. We also ordered the fresh guacamole, which was very good. It had a nice chunky texture and fresh flavor, although I think it could have used just a touch more salt. For our entrées, my wife ordered the Pastor Tacos, and I chose the Drunken Tacos, one each with shrimp, shredded beef, and chorizo. The Pastor Tacos were unfortunately the biggest disappointment of the meal. The pork was dry and lacked the juicy, well-marinated flavor I usually expect from al pastor. Adding some of the guacamole definitely helped. They came with double tortillas, but unlike many great al pastor tacos, there wasn't enough juice to justify them. My Drunken Tacos were a mixed bag. The shrimp and chorizo tacos were both excellent, with plenty of flavor. The shredded beef taco, however, was fairly bland by comparison. Each entrée came with generous portions of rice and beans. While everything was served hot, the presentation could have been better. Some of the food looked as though it had simply been dropped onto the plate. A little more attention to plating would have made the meal feel more polished. Service: We received a friendly greeting when we arrived and asked for a table on the patio. Our server, Shaylinne, took great care of us throughout the meal. She was friendly, attentive, and helpful with our order. The service was consistently excellent. Atmosphere: We spent our visit on the outdoor patio. There were plenty of tables, and it wasn't very busy. Even though the patio sits in the middle of a shopping center parking lot, it was surprisingly quiet and made for a pleasant place to enjoy dinner. There were a few families with young children nearby, but everyone was respectful, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Overall, La Cabaña is a good choice if you're looking for a traditional Mexican restaurant. Some dishes really stood out, while others were surprisingly bland or lacked attention to detail. I'm glad we stopped in, but based on this visit, it probably wouldn't be my first choice for Mexican food in the area.
