Ok, so Alpine Retreat was the worst experience. From the service, the atmosphere to the food. Restaurant is very dirty / dusty on surfaces that apparently don't get used often. It was not busy and there are only 12 tables with 3 waitresses. Our waitress was an older lady who was a bit hard of hearing which is not ideal. She only came to our table 1 time and that was to take our order. I had to call her over to get another drink. Then someone else brought our appetizer. Sorry 2 times, then she brought our food and we never saw her again. The prime rib was cordy and tough. My filet which is pictured was supposed to be medium and it came well done and dry. Then my shrimp was sitting on the plate in the aujus so the breading was soggy. We only had the opportunity to tell all of this to the hostess who came to clear our plates. She did comp us our appetizer but it was too late. This is the first time we did not tip our server, ever. Should have gone to Johnny Manhattens. Ruined our anniversary dinner. Now we are home disappointed.

It seemed like a very popular place due to it being so busy. Very cozy. I saw couples, young and old as well as whole families. The food was delicious. The staff appeared to be made up of local youngsters. Top notch service. Really enjoyed The Sawmill. I highly recommend stopping in the next time you're in the area.

I got the Head Sawyer (steak, eggs, and hash browns) with the double tenderloin option, one kid got chicken strips with fries, and the other got a kids pizza. We also shared a piece of coffee cake. I don't think my youngest was super enthused by his pizza, mostly because it's not memorable to him. My oldest liked his chicken strips and fries, but I don't know if he's come across chicken strips and fries that he doesn't like, so take that with a grain of salt. The hash browns were ok. They were just fried potato with no other flavor or add-in like onions. I added salt and pepper because they needed it. I got American cheese on the scrambled eggs and they were as you'd expect. The tenderloin was fine. Obviously not as good of a cut as New York strip or ribeye would have been. I ended up sharing a portion of it with my oldest and he ate it without complaints too. The star of our visit was the coffee cake. It was warm and soft and in every sense perfect. Sharing is carrying and I'm fine sharing with my kids most of the time, but man, I wish it had been all for me.

First time here…read more Food: It was a Friday evening, around 8:00, and we decided to try some of the fish specials. I ordered the Pan-Seared Walleye, and she chose the Lake Perch Fry. Since our entrées included access to the salad bar, we started there. The appearance of the salad bar was disappointing. I realize it was later in the evening, but there were literally salad bar fixings all over the place. Some items were mixed together, some had spilled onto the enclosure, and there was food on the floor as well. Much of what was offered looked like it had come straight out of a can. The walleye wasn't bad. However, the mixed vegetables were a pile of mush, and although I had requested the potato pancake be extra crispy, it was still undercooked in the middle. The perch fry was okay, but nothing special. For dessert, she ordered the Brandy Alexander, and I had the LemonBerry Cake. The Brandy Alexander was very good, while the LemonBerry Cake was mediocre. Service: Our server did a nice job getting us settled in. Water and drinks arrived promptly, and they were friendly and pleasant throughout the evening. However, they became involved in a lengthy conversation at another table, so getting our check took quite a while. Atmosphere: To be honest, the place looks a bit run-down and could probably benefit from some TLC. Since it was later in the evening, there weren't many other diners, and the restaurant was relatively quiet. The view of the lake through the windows is spectacular and makes it a great place to watch the sunset. I wish the food had been better. Unfortunately, this isn't a place we are likely to return to.

Stopped in for another meal…read more Food: The food was excellent. They have eleven different sliders, so we ordered four different ones, along with a side of the haystack onion rings. Service: There was an issue with our order. Apparently, it did not "print" back in the kitchen. We ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes before someone figured out what had happened. They acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and comped our drinks. Atmosphere: They now have outdoor entertainment every evening, and there is plenty of seating to choose from. The traffic around the roundabout intersection can get noisy, but I think they simply turn up the volume to compensate. A good spot for smoked meats and other sandwiches.

The…read morereviews for the potato crusted fish were great, so I was looking forward to trying fish fry for the first time. I understand that this is a hole in the wall type of establishment, but I think it's so weird that you sit at the table to look at the menu, and then go up to the counter to order. Then you get your drinks and you go sit back down. It's a pretty small place, there's only about a dozen tables total So it fills up very quickly! It wasn't too busy when we arrived. We sat down and decided what we wanted, and then my friend and I went up to the counter to order. There were three of us total. We waited over an hour before my friend's boyfriend finally got up to go check on the status of our food. There were four tables around us that came to the restaurant after we got there, and all got their food before us. He came back and said that the waiter told him that the food should be out any minute. Then the guy who was at the counter who took our order, came over to the table a couple minutes later and said "that was my bad guys, I forgot to hit fire, it'll be about 20 minutes", meaning he forgot to send the order to the kitchen. We waited over an hour before he finally came and told us that. Our food came out about 25 minutes later, and then we left shortly after we finished eating. My friend and her boyfriend said the salmon was OK, but it wasn't great. I really enjoyed my fish fry, especially the potato crusted one. I also tried the potato cakes and they were mediocre and not hot. Overall, super disappointed with this entire visit. They didn't come out and apologize, they didn't offer anything, and it was just a really terrible experience overall having to wait that long. Period.

First time here…read more Food: We ordered several different beers, and I got the Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet with extra cherries. The drink was okay. Some of the fruit was muddled at the bottom of the glass. It could have used a few more bitters to give it a richer, more complex flavor. For appetizers, we ordered the Haystack Onion Rings and the Smoked Peaches and Brie. The onion rings were good. They came out hot and had a nice breading. Haystack onion rings are usually sliced very thin, and these were thicker, more like regular onion rings. Still, they were very tasty. The Smoked Peaches and Brie was excellent. The peaches had plenty of smoky flavor, and the Brie was nicely melted. It was a generous portion and spread easily on the crostini. For our entrées, we ordered the Texas Brisket Sandwich, the Brisket Platter, and a Cheeseburger. Our food arrived fairly quickly. The brisket was the star of the show. It had a great char, was very tender, and came in generous portions. The cheeseburger was ordered medium-rare, which was emphasized when placing the order, but it came out well done. After bringing it to our server's attention, they had it remade, and the replacement was much better. The sandwiches come standard with "homemade" chips, but I'm not convinced that's what we received. A few of the chips appeared homemade, but the majority looked and tasted like something out of a bag. See my photo for a comparison. Service: I think our server was relatively new, as they weren't able to answer many of our questions. They were nice and efficient, but not especially personable. They did a good job taking our orders, keeping our water and drinks refilled, and handling the final bill. Atmosphere: The place has a great feel to it. The smoker is out front, and the many times I have driven by, the aroma of the smoke has been wonderful. The building has been lovingly restored and maintained. Inside, you can choose to sit either at the bar or in the dining room. It's not a large space, but it didn't feel crowded, and the noise level was low enough to allow for easy conversation. Conclusion: I know this restaurant has gone through a very recent change in ownership, and the menu has had some changes. Perhaps some of the issues we experienced tonight were a result of that transition. I'm definitely interested in coming back. I would love to enjoy another meal featuring their excellent brisket.
