SO IMPRESSED!! This place has been great! When my bf took our cat in & learned he had cancer all inside his throat & would only live about one more very painful month, he was so upset. But Dr. Virk was incredibly gentle & understanding, & his kindness and excellent bedside manner helped my bf get through the difficult act of putting the cat to sleep. A few days later, we received a HANDWRITTEN CARD from Dr. Virk offering his condolences. That one simple act of kindness, paired with his excellent veterinary services, won us over! We recently took our other cat in due to an eye infection & they got us right in with Dr. Freeman. He was equally amazing-- he explained EVERYTHING to us, without talking down to us. And there was something about the way he and the vet tech touched & spoke to my cat that really struck me-- I could just tell that these people love animals & are in it for all the right reasons!! I'm so glad the Dr. Freeman explained that this particular infection takes quite a while to heal because otherwise I would've been very concerned when it took almost 2 weeks to heal. We also got our cat's booster shots while we were there. The exam, eye ointment, & shots only came out to around $200, which I thought was a very fair price for such great care. I've had many cats over the years, plus I foster kittens, so I've seen quite a few vets, but have never been terribly impressed by any of them. So I'm ecstatic that I've finally found a great place to take my sweet little babies. I have been coming here for years. They took care of my first dog who passed away. I have nothing bad to say about 2 doctors. However, when I brought my new puppy for vaccinations, vet tech was rude, insulting, trying to make us feel stupid. She grabbed my puppy and carried him like a foreign object. She would not explain what vaccinations were needed, which were optional. Then they blacklisted me so I could not return. Awful customer service, could not print all vaccinations, disorganized. Right now that have a new phone system that has been not taking phone calls. We've also experienced tech No Shows with no phone call to advise us and we drove quite a distance. When we spoke of our pet's needs after an injury they disregarded our concerns. After 2 no shows we went to a new vet and all of our concerns were addressed and our pet received a higher quality of care. I took my cat here several times, first for tapeworms and a URI, which they successfully treated. The staff always seemed very busy and overworked during these visits, but totally competent. I also took my cat here to get neutered, and unfortunately he died during the procedure. While it took many calls on my part to get further information from the vet, they eventually gave me access to the autopsy and surgery records. The autopsy performed showed that my cat had an undiagnosed heart condition that increases the risk of complication under anesthesia. However, in the surgery records, I saw that the vet staff also made a careless mistake with his weight, and recorded him as 12.1lbs instead of 7.1lbs. A part of me will always wonder if he would have survived (even with his heart condition) if I'd brought him to be neutered at a vet that weighed him correctly and gave him the correct doses of medicine for his weight... I believe the staff here are good people, but I would still recommend considering a different vet, unless you are required to use this one through your rescue or can't afford to pay out of pocket elsewhere (as I was). read more

Dr. Virk has been our Vet for the last 14 years, when we first started at the office we had a 4 very sweet dogs and we now only have our 16 old precious chihuahua Jake. While on a camping trip this last week we came across an abandoned dog and that needed some medical attention and of course we immediately took her to see Dr. Virk. His wealth of experience and genuine care for animals sets him apart. We are so grateful to him for his kindhearted nature and the wonderful care he has given her and our other dogs over the years. Update. I never heard a word back from anyone at Alpine. I've filed a formal complaint with the Veterinary Board. Their lack of interest, compassion or understanding definitely alarms me. I urge anyone looking for a qualified Veterinarian to bypass Alpine Veterinary Hospital. August 20, 2020 I received notifications from the Veterinary Medical Board staying that Dr. Sumwhinder Virk received 2 disciplinary actions for his refusal to give my Charlie his medication. You can review his disciplinary actions at http://search.dca.ca.gov Just type in his name and you can review the actions the medics board issued him. He's on probation until 2023!! Please don't take your pets to this horribly ran Vet! August, 2021 I filed a formal complaint with the State of California Veterinary Board. The board ruled in my favor and issued Dr. Virk a disciplinary citation. He also had to issue me a complete refund for the services he failed to provide. THEY KILLED MY HEALTHY DOG!!! STAY AWAY!!!! We brought our 5 year old dog to Alpine for an emergency stitching of his lip. This was our first time here, since it was the closest vet to us and I had seen good reviews. I did fail to notice that Dr. Virk has been on probation!! Dr. Virk first misdiagnosed and said our dog has an ulcer on his lip, when his lip was clearly cut! He said it should be a quick fix and that he will need a few stitches. NOBODY here asked for any records of our dog, about his health, vaccination records, etc. We dropped him off at 9AM. By 2PM I called to check to see if he's ready, and they said they are keeping him in the kennel until ALL patients are seen and then they will get to him. Why couldn't you tell me earlier?? ANOTHER RED FLAG. By 6:30PM they still hadn't called us so we began driving towards the hospital, when we received a call from a young guy, casually telling us that our dog stopped breathing and passed. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE CARELESSNESS IN HIS VOICE. They kept my dog for over 12 hours for minor stitches and then killed him!! We got to the hospital and found out Dr. Virk left the hospital before our dog even woke up!! He left our dog, under anesthesia, with a group of people who are not even mentioned on their website, who probably got intimidated and gave him way more anesthesia than needed. NEGLIGENT!! The doctor or the nurses did not for 1 second explain to us any complications that may be caused by anesthesia or the surgery. This was our first time having one of our dogs go under anesthesia & we had no prior information on the procedure. We trusted Alpine Hospital to inform us of anything we needed to know as worried pet owners who brought in their dog for an emergency incident. This hospital had all day to call & ask us for medical records or anything else they needed. But they did not. They even wrote the breed wrong on the papers and didn't bother to ask us. How could you be so careless and negligent when you're on probation for negligence??? Our beloved companion and best friend has died way before his time, due to complete negligence and unprofessionalism of Alpine Veterinary Hospital & their staff. Linda Swagerty, Office Manager, and her staff, create an environment of safety and caring....a place where you know your pet will be well cared for. Dr. Virk, who owns the hospital, is one of the kindest vets I've ever met....he obviously cares about the animals he treats, as he calmly examines and treats them. Yesterday, he performed an emergency c-section on my Chihuahua show dog, and treated her ever so gently as she came out of the anaesthesia. I was impressed with the small incision he made to retrieve the puppies. Today, the office called to check up on mama dog and the babies. If you want 5-star treatment for your animals, Alpine Veterinary Hospital is the place you want to go. It's not a corporate-owned facility, and Your pet's welfare is foremost on their mind. Our 3.5-year-old Frenchie jumped off our bed and ruptured a disc. Griffin couldn't walk or stand up on his own. His legs were becoming more stiff as the hours went on. The local vet in Napa said we needed a neurologist and sent us for emergency care at SAGE in Redwood City. They told us that he was becoming paralyzed and that we needed to get him an MRI ($3000) and an aggressive back surgery that was only an 80% chance he recovers from this. That would cost us approx $18,000 dollars. Not to mention the aftercare costs. If we couldn't do that, then we should euthanize him humanely there that day. We cried it out and begged for an alternative so they sent us home with a gloomy diagnosis that the steroids will probably not help and to have him put down if he become fully paralyzed and struggled with his breathing. We were trying to figure out what else could be done and our family friend messaged us with Linda from Bay area Animal rescue crews information. Linda called us and immediately suggested we take Griffin to Concord, Alpine Vet Hospital. That night we showed up to the Clinic at 6pm (they have great hours for working families too! ) Dr Freeman met us there and in detail explained this Hib Laser that could help Griffin to walk again for hundreds of dollars not thousands!!!! He also did a few tests in front of us to test Griffin's reflexes. And he quickly was able to explain Parysis vs Paralysed. Griffin had a shot. And the Vet scheduled 7 visits for this HIb laser in a matter of 2 weeks. After the first treatment, it was clear we had some results. Griffin who was not lifting his head on his own, left the clinic with his head up! We kept him on the Steriods and he's been on some anti-inflammatories and pain meds for the last 27 days. I am happy to report Griffin is 90% better! He still doesn't take the stairs or do any jumping (we will be limiting that for a long time ) But he is walking with the occasional stumble. I feel like Linda and the Rescue crew and Dr Virk and Dr Freeman and the rest of the staff at Alpine are a Group of people who deserve this praise. And a BIG HUGE THANK YOU! OUR family is healed and this help means more to us than I can put in this review! They were kind to us and helped us as if it was their dog suffering! These folks will jump through hoops to help animals in need, and Dr. Virk has been a wonderful friend to STAR and other non-profits dedicated to saving animals in need. Dr. Virk is top notch--his only fault is being too focused on vet care and not enough focused on the kinds of details about running a business a good business manager should be focused on. Fortunately, he has Linda to manage his office, and that is a winning combo. Hard to figure what the basis of the few negative comments here is. We and other animal rescue orgs have gotten wonderful service and results from Dr. Virk, and we anticipate much more of that going forward. read more

ABSOUTELY DO NOT trust your pet with this hospital. My friend took my 13 month old cat Pepper to get seen because she was not acting herself, more tired than usual (lethargic), and had an eye infection in her right eye. We were discharged only with eye antibiotics and nothing else was addressed. We were told by Dr. Freeman to follow up and have her seen in a week. Alpine hospital was contacted by myself, my friend and their online appointment service and my friend nor myself never got a response. Well I will tell you what the eye infection, lethargy and drastic weight loss meant. It meant that she had FIP which is a deadly disease that has no cure. Eye abnormalities/infection, lethargy and anorexia are all symptoms that can occur in FIP. Given she was within the typical age range, this should have been a differential diagnosis. So while Alpine never got back to us and still hasn't to this day, I had to put down the best most affectionate cat in the world. They did her a disservice. I wouldn't trust this place ever again! IF YOU VALUE YOUR PET'S LIFE DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE! Very disappointed that not only was there never a follow up on Alpine's behalf to check in on Pepper, but she was completely misdiagnosed. read more

Today was one of the hardest days of my life. My sweet Lily Bug lost her battle with Glomerulonephritis. She was suffering after a hard 6 month fight and we brought her in after making that tough decision of letting her go peacefully. I cannot put into words how caring and kind Dr. Freeman, Danielle and the rest of the staff were. They were extremely compassionate and sweet. Let me back up and start from the beginning of Lily's journey. I adopted Lily from ARF on 8/17/18. She was just 2 years old. She was super sweet, loving and cuddly. Literally the best pup ever! In August of 2020 she started vomiting frequently and we noticed she was losing weight. One night after vomiting she became lethargic so we took her to an emergency vet. After thousands of dollars in overnight stays, labs and imaging they diagnosed her with Glomerulonephritis and told us she was in kidney failure. She was only 4! They told us that the symptoms only start showing once the disease causes the actual kidney failure and by then it was too late. They told us that they recommended euthanasia right away. We were devastated. They told us we could come pick her up and we could spend the day with her to say our goodbyes. We picked her up and spent the entire day crying and holding her. The cost of euthanasia was really high at the emergency vet so I called a few local vets to check pricing and took her to one. Upon arrival they took us into the room to prepare for euthanasia. The doctor came in and examined her and she told us she could not put Lily down because she believed that Lily had life left in her and she believed that she still had some time!! We were so shocked and relieved!! She didn't know much about her condition and we decided to contact Dr. Freeman at Alpine for a now 3rd opinion since he had been an amazing veterinarian when he was caring for my little black kitty, Pepper who had chronic sinus issues. He was very knowledgeable and helped up through Pepper's journey because he also has a black cat with chronic sinus problems so he related. When we arrived for Lily's appointment, Danielle came to get her and I told her the situation. She was so sweet and she took Lily in for the exam with Dr. Freeman. He confirmed that he thought Lily still had life too! He understood that we knew she would not get better and there was no cure so he never pushed extensive and unnecessary testing. He worked with us to only do what was absolutely essential to provide comfort care for her. Throughout the 5-6 month journey both Danielle, Dr. Freeman and the entire staff was amazing. They dealt with my frantic calls when Lily stopped drinking or eating. They let us come in when she was in need of IV fluids and never once made us feel like we were bothering them. Danielle went above and beyond to keep me updated and she was so kind. I cannot thank her enough for being so caring and sweet. It's one thing to have someone that does their job which is caring for the animals and it's another to go beyond your job description to be an amazing human being and being there for the pet's owners too. This entire journey would have been a nightmare had it have not been for Danielle's exceptional care. Thank you Danielle, Dr. Freeman and the entire staff for everything. My family and I appreciate you all so much. Because of you guys we got a chance to have 5 more moths with our sweet girl. We got to spend Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years with her and we sure did spoil her! Thank you for caring for the animals genuinely and not being like many vets out there who are looking to just make money. The care you provided to us was fantastic. Danielle, you are an absolute blessing and Alpine is very lucky to have such a compassionate and caring employee. Negligent and dangerous life-threatening malpractice. My dog died 2 weeks after visiting Alpine. Stay away!!!!! I took my 6-yo Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in to Alpine for a tooth extraction on May 21. I picked him up later the same day and he seemed groggy and a bit out of it. Understandable given the procedure. I brought him home and put him to bed. I was shocked and really scared when he woke up the next morning all but paralyzed on his left side (eye/jaw dropped, head tilt to the left, could not walk without stumbling, walking into objects, left eye nearly closed, and seemed to be having tremors). I called and Alpine said that he is still "feeling the affects of the anesthesia" and to call back tomorrow..... The following day ZERO improvement. I called to report and Alpine told me to bring my dog back. I did so and waited in the parking lot while they looked at my dog. The Dr. Virk came out to my car without my dog to report that my dog had suffered a stroke and that they would be keeping him on fluids and meds throughout the Memorial Day weekend. I was devastated and returned home. A few hours later Dr Virk called to report that it was not a stroke after-all, but rather my dog developed Horners Syndrome.... a condition that mimics strokes but self-corrects. They wanted to keep my dog anyways to monitor. When I picked my dog up on the Tuesday after they had to carry him to the car. Still not able to walk and ALL the same symptoms. I took my dog to my primary Vet and the first thing she asked for was the pre-op blood panel Alpine did on my dog. I called and Alpine said they "didn't do one, but instead did an in-house version..." They sent me my dogs complete records. It did not contain any blood panel. After doing an actual blood panel and exhausting tests, my vet has determined that Alpine Veterinary Hospital damaged my dogs nerves when removing his tooth. The nerves are very close to the ear and this affects balance, etc. Will this self correct. It's unsure. He is being treated with medication to clear up any possible infection related to Alpine's negligent and dangerous life-threatening malpractice. Alpine refunded the tooth extraction costs 100%. Also, Dr. Virk promised my dog would "Improve 100%'. He also promised to pay for the CT scan of my dog. When I called to schedule the CT scan, he never called back. Still haven't heard from him. Or, Alpine. Nothing. My dog passed away in bed this morning 2 1/2 weeks after visiting Alpine. Do not ever take your animal to this clinic. If Walter's life was worth anything, please let it be as a warning for you. Find another Vet. Stay away from this dangerous place. Do not put your animals life and well-being in the hands of this practice. Alpine knows what they did and they want to hide from it. I will be sharing my story everywhere I can. read more

ZERO STARS IF I COULD!!!!!! I have been going to Dr. Virk going on 16 years. He WAS a good Vet up until about 2 yrs ago. I would take my other dog Molly in for red irritated paws and he was say " oh its allergies and give her an allergy shot and antibiotics. This went on her months and months. Back in December 2022 I took my now 10 month old Pepper in for her puppy wellness check up. She had been scratching at her ears a lot. Dr. Virk lifted both ears and glanced inside and said " oh they are irritated probably from her littler mates licking at them. He flushed them out, gave us ear drops and antibiotics. Five days later I took her back for the same reason itching at her ears. This time I made an appointment with Dr. Freeman. I explained to him what Dr. Virk had done on the previous visit, and told him that Pepper was still scratching at her ears so he took his otoscope and checked both ears. Come to find out she had ear mites. Dr. Friedman treated her with one time eardrops to kill the ear mites which they did. I have no complaints on this appointment. Now for little itty bitty Shelby shown in picture. I brought home Shelby from my breeder in Fresno Saturday 8/5/23 She got carsick on the way home. So she didn't want to eat her food that Saturday night. The next day on Sunday8/6/23 we took this video that is uploaded on here and she was playing with Pepper her half sister. on Monday 8/7/23 I had a puppy wellness check with Dr. Virk, I had asked him to please make sure he checked her ears thoroughly because she was scratching at them , and she came from the same breeder that Pepper did, and Pepper had ear mites. Dr. Virk glanced at them, said that they were irritated and prescribed her eardrops for the infection, and that would also kill the ear mites, but he never used the otoscope to look in them. She was off her food not eating, so he gave her fluids, anti-nauseous shot, shot of Pepcid and sent us home with the ear drops and food entice to make her want to eat. 8/8/23 Shelby bounced back a little. She played with her sister and she would eat a little wet dog food. She drank and would potty like normal. She had her 1st poop. Nothing out of the ordinary with the poop. She was fully dewormed and had her 1st DHPP shot. 8/9/23-8/12/23 Shelby took a turn for the worse. We had to start force feeding her. She was getting food and water. But sleeping a lot. I made a follow up appointment with Dr. Freeman at this point I was fine with him. I took Shelby in 8/22 at 9:15am to Dr. Freeman. She had been vomiting and had diarrhea all night. He saw her laying on the exam table and commented on how little she was. I explained to him what has been happening with her since we brought her home. I even mention how pale her gums were. He felt her stomach and her intestines and didn't find a blockage. He said he knew it wasn't Parvo. Wasn't worms since she had be dewormed 3 times. He mention coccidia, and some other parasites. But didn't test for them or Parvo. No blood work was done. But took her in the back and gave her a antibiotic shot that would last 7 days, gave her more fluids under the skin. Gave her another anti nausea shot, some probiotics capsules and 2 cans of Wet urgent care dog food AD. Sent us home. 8/12/23 @ 4:30 Shelby was still vomiting and lethargic. I called Alpine and got a message to Dr. Friedman. 6:00pm I called Alpine back to see if Dr Freeman left instructions. They said they would have his Tech give me a call. Tech called back and advised us to take to an emergency hospital. 8/12/23 6:45pm I took Shelby to PacVet emergency hospital. They put her in critical care. Sugar levels were 35 heart rate 70/50. They checked her for Parvo, negative. They believed it was coccidia. They didn't think she would make it through the night. So I made a very difficult decision to end her suffering. DO NOT TAKE YOUR BELOVED FUR BABIES TO ALPINE VETERINARY HOSPITAL. THEY ARE SUBPAR VETS. THEY DONT RUN NECESSARY TEST. GOD FOBID THEY FOLLOW UP WITH THEIR CLIENTS. MY OPINION THEY KILLED SHELBY BY NOT DOING NECESSARY TEST OR ADMITTING HER INTO THE HOSPITAL FOR CARE THAT I CANNOT GIVE AT HOME. I will be filing a formal complaint to the veterinary, licensing Board. Against both doctors and Dr. Viik's hospital. read more

They get busy at times, but that is because their prices are so reasonable compared to other Vet clinics. I would also provide a 0 if I could. This place is a hot mess. A years ago Dr. Verk dismissed the symptoms our dog was having with a diagnosis of "allergies". Our dog had kennel cough, along with the two other pets that came in that day. He dismissed us all and said our dogs "we're fine". They also for the longest time kept calling me and sending me information for another dogs care. Called and mentioned it to them several time and I still once in a while her appointment reminders for other dogs. Crazy! A neighbor on Nextdoor recently posted the passing of her puppy due to Dr. Verks negligence in treatment/care. He license is allegedly on probation and has been for the last three years. I regret not posting this sooner:( No idea how others are getting they "great" care they allege. I would avoid this place, Apollo, and Concord Veterinary Clinic at all costs! read more
