It's very rare to find a veterinarian these days that cares more about the animal being treated than the person's ability to afford to pay the bill. I have found they still exists Dr. Virk is that veterinarian. I recently rescued a dog from the shelter with some issues and he has cared more about the dog being in a loving home then about how much he could charge for the visits and medications that he needed to be healthy. His staff are always helpful and happy to the pI have been through more veterinary clinics throughout my many years and many pets it's truely a blessing to have found this group of folks. Update. Went in for tooth extraction and my dog died. From there the story only gets worst. Sounded like same story I read in another review where dr Virk claims heart issues. I got a same day appointment for my dog that had ear infection. They brought me back quickly after check in and the doctor came in the room shortly after. I was very pleased with my experience. My dog was in pain before our appointment and left very happy and feeling better. The bill was a fair price as well. 1 week later... I realized that they didn't actually test for infection so I still took my dog to regular banfield and he sure did have one. I was able to get proper medication which concerns me if I didn't get him tested i'm sure he'd get very ill. Also the lady at the front was taking a personal call while assisting me... read more

Zero stars,this place is pathetic!!! They do not have qualified veterinarians or technicians as they call it to do basic nail cuts ear cleaning. It shouldn't take 2 and a 1/2 hours to get nails cut in your air clean. I made an appointment to have my dog sedated so it'll be easier to cut her nails so she's not so stressed out, but they decided not to do it without communicating this to me. The person who came out and gave me my dog was so unknowledgeable it was just very sad. My dog smells like shit, the person didn't even realize it realize it, they gave me something to cleaner with and took me 6 wipes of baby wipe to wiper down and still smells like shit. DO NOT go to this hospital for your dog unless you want to wait forever, have no communication and have your dog stressed out. Is very unqualified staff go somewhere else. read more

After I brought my dog for a medical exam (salty $335. blood test and exam), Dr. Roark Freeman informed me my dog probably has cushing disease and he would email me with a quote for further exam before he could propose the correct medication. After a day waiting for his email, I called and no response and no email from him. The receptionist mentioned she would inform Dr. Freeman to contact me. After four days of no response, I called again and still no communication from this vet. A week later and still no response no email, nothing from Freeman. My dog has been suffering for one more week (including myself) while waiting for a response from this irresponsible vet. In my mind the personal at this vet hospital is completely irresponsible and unprofessional and I will just need to go find another vet. I will file a complaint with the California veterinary Board. I saw from other reviewer that Alpine veterinary hospital already has issues with past clients and they are still in 'probation' with the California veterinary medical board for negligence and incompetence. If I had read this before, I would never have taken my animals to them. read more

Since moving from Hawai'i last year I've been searching high and low for the best veterinarian for my two dogs, a 5 year old Maltese and a 15 year old blind, mute, deaf dachshund with a collapsed trachea and 2 slipped discs....yes I know it's a lot but trust me, she is happy and not ready to pass the Rainbow! Anyways, at the recommendation of a fellow Yelp Eliter, a pleasant visit to the office without my dogs and a friendly telephone call I finally decided I was ready to make an appointment and board my dogs for a few nights at Alpine. APPOINTMENT: Our first appointment was rushed and incomplete. The vet weighed my dogs and felt around their bodies, looked at their teeth, and declared they were both healthy. No look inside their ears, no temperature check, no listening to their heart or lungs and no fecal tests. On the positive note, my bill was rather cheap even with vaccines for both dogs. BOARDING: I dropped my dogs off with their leashes, bed, food and completed questionnaire. Several hours later while camping with spotty cell reception I realized I had a voicemail from Jaime claiming I didn't drop off any food for the dogs. I also had concerned messages from my parents who live in Pacifica, my emergency contacts, stating they were called and wanted to know what kind of food to bring to the vet. When I picked up my dogs it took 30 minutes for somebody to finally bring my dogs to me in the lobby. The vet tech also had their bed and left over food. I asked him about the calls and he said they were calling because the food was low. Ummm....I left a gallon ziploc bag for 2 nights and that is not the messages I received or the calls my parents got. What if this was necessary medication??? I will NOT be bringing my dogs back to Alpine for veterinary services or boarding and recommend you look elsewhere too! read more

Dr Freeman was very caring and was great with our kitten. We brought Monkey to see the vet after she had been limping and not putting her paw down for 3 days. Not knowing if she has a fracture or dislocation or what it could be. After a thorough examination Monkey was diagnosed with a cellulitis infection and received a shot of antibiotics. We were at their mercy and are thankful they didn't make us do X-rays or anything to fluff up the bill. Seems to be the case at a lot of vets. I have been using Alpine now for about a year, my experience with the for our rescue Jellys place. Dr. Virk has pulled off so surgeries that we thought impossible. Yet here comes Dr. Virk and filicia a vet technician there, to jump in and start work on whoever we bring.( No we can't help right now were full.) I take all Jellys place animals here for 100 percent devotion on their part. This veterinarian loves his job and has a true passion for his roll in every animals care. I see the passion in the staff as well. It trurly takes a heart like these people to do the amazing work they do everyday. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Dr. V and their staff are! I have always had dogs and used to use a different veterinarian simply because it was closer to my home, but I wasn't very happy with their service so I decided to give Alpine a try and I'm so glad that I did. My boxer was not doing too well at the time and he was 12 years old so I was very concerned for his health as he was breathing very fast and had stopped eating, Dr.V ran some tests and called devastating news. The compassion in his voice told me that it wasn't something I would want to hear the way that he explained it to me really soften the blow. My dog had cancer, and it was very advanced, so the outlook was. Then believe it or not four months later my other boxer got cancer too. Needless to say, Dr. B. helped us through a very tough time in our family. When we walked in a candle was lit to alert everyone that we were letting our loved ones go that day. They walked us out the side and let us stay with our dog for as long as we needed. I can't thank him enough as it is very difficult to make end of life for your pet tolerable and somehow they manage to do it with respect and grace. Now two years later, we are back with a brand new puppy. Our hearts are vulnerable, but knowing that this dog will get such great care from Dr. V gives me hope that this will be in our lives for years to come. Thank you, Dr. V! read more

My family started taking our pets to Dr. Virk in the 90's and once I got my two dogs I also started taking them to see him. I moved to Oregon for a few years and one of my dogs got sick and I went to two different vets trying to get her diagnosed. I eventually sent Dr. Virk her lab results and told him everything that was happening. He called me back and gave me the information and support to finally get her diagnosed and establish a treatment plan. She wasn't even a current patient of his and he still was super kind and helpful. Now that I'm back in California I'm happily taking my pets to him again. My puppies first visit; very nice convenient location with ample parking. Nice large waiting area with dog treats available while you wait. I was a bit late due to street traffic I didn't expect it to be so busy so I recommend leaving earlier than usual. The physician was very nice did not rush allowed for Questions and Answers very gentle with the puppy i could tell he loves animals :) Staff was friendly, they took the puppy out of the room for her shot which is different, I'm used to being in the same room. Didn't bother me since I would rather not see. I would say to expect since they don't tell you in advance or provide an option. When done the tech takes payment inside the room which is convenient then you take your receipt and discharge instructions or details at the front desk. I will be returning for the additional shots and recommend based on my first experience. read more

I first brought my cat Tweekies in back in Feb. 2021. His appointment was with Dr. Freeman. I was unable to go inside with him because of Covid. I am currently a student & surviving mostly on student financial aid so I'm on a limited budget. But I was allowed to make payments, which I'm so grateful for. I've never been able to find a vet that would allow payments so this was a huge help for me. Tweekies had previously been diagnosed with stomatitis. Dr. Freeman wanted to do bloodwork so I agreed. He had been vomiting frequently & losing weight so I wanted to make sure it wasn't something other than the stomatitis. But I also needed antibiotics & pain meds for him so we could clear up the infection in his mouth. Although I had agreed to the bloodwork, I never gave permission for a urine sample to be taken so I was very surprised later when I got the lab work back. I would have never agreed to a urine test because there are only a couple of ways to get a clean urine sample from a cat & both are painful. Even though I had brought in the paperwork showing that he had been diagnosed with stomatitis, Dr. Freeman refused to give a prescription for the antibiotics or pain meds until after the bloodwork came back. I was told that it would only take a day or two. In the meantime, my poor cat was in a lot of pain. It took longer than a couple of days because when the bloodwork came back, Dr. Freeman did not call me. I tried to reach him but was told he was busy & would call back. When he didn't I tried again the following day & was told he was off for the day. I was more than a little irritated since my cat was in pain. That is when Dr. Virk got on the phone & he filled the prescriptions. He also told me that Tweekie's bloodwork had come in & everything was normal. It wasn't until MONTH's later when I finally got copies of the bloodwork that I found out that not only was it NOT normal, there were several things that were very much out of range. This is also when I found out about the urine test. I am extremely grateful that Dr. Virk gave me the prescriptions Tweekies needed but I really don't think that he even looked at the bloodwork or he would have known it was not normal. I had brought Tweekies back in a few times during the time I was still waiting for copies of the bloodwork but was never told that he might have cancer. After getting the copies I inquired about the things that were far from normal. I asked if it could be hyperthyroidism or diabetes but I was assured that it was neither of those things & it was most likely stomach cancer. The only way to know for certain was a scan of his stomach but I couldn't really afford that. He seemed pretty sure that it was cancer though so the best I could do was keep my boy comfortable until it was time for him to go to the Rainbow Bridge. I had Disney Pet Hospital look at the bloodwork & they too said it was more than likely cancer. X-rays had been taken but an ultrasound was needed to confirm. Fast forward to the end of October... the time had come to say goodbye to my sweet boy. Dr. Virk suggested that he might have hyperthyroidism. HUH? He was the one who had originally told me that he did NOT have that & that it was cancer. So now when he's been gradually getting sicker & sicker he might have it? I was told they were going to take him to the back room to put an IV in his arm. I told them that I wanted to hold him when he was being euthanized because I didn't want him to be alone. They assured me that I would be with him. After quite a while I was told that because he was so thin they couldn't find a vein so they were going to inject him in his stomach. They said I could go & say my goodbyes & then they would euthanize him. I told them very clearly that I didn't want them to do that. I wanted to hold him when they injected him so he didn't die alone. They said he wouldn't know I was even there but I feel he would know if I was holding him before they injected him. They said ok & went to go get him. However when they went to go get him they injected him anyway & then brought him to me. So when they handed him to me he was already seconds away from being gone. He had no idea I was there with him & right after they handed him to me his head flopped over, his eyes were glazed, & he pooped, which told me he was definitely gone. I held him & cried for at least a half-hour or longer before someone finally came in. My friend who was with me asked them to check his heart to be sure he was gone. We were told only the vet could do that. Another half-hour waiting & he came in & said yes Tweekies was gone. But he wouldn't take Tweekies because that was his assistant's job. So, another half hour of waiting. Like I said I am grateful I was allowed to make payments & Dr. Virk plus the rest of the staff seem very nice. But, I am not happy about not being able to hold him before & during his euthanization. So that is the reason I am only giving 2 stars. I miss my sweet boy! read more

All tech staff here needs to be fired. All communication from tech staff to vet is completely incorrect both ways. The doctor called me confused at why I requested treatments that I never requested. I'd given specific, very clear instructions to the technician to relay to the doctor which never got done. Also the instructions the techs gave back to me, that were apparently from the doctor, were completely incorrect. When someone is performing a medical treatment whether it's an animal or a human, lack of communication or incorrect communication can result in literal death. Absolutely do not go here if you do not have to. read more

I took the pooch here recently for some allergy meds to deal with the heat related illness from scratching and sun spots. We got some meds and a heartworm pill. He also found out our dog had an abcess in his tooth. He wound up having some teeth pulled and had a steroid shot for the heat issues. We also had to remove a growth on his back paw which happened to be a tumor. We had used a friendly process called "scratchpay" , which help us distribute payments over period of time. At no time we felt pressured by them and they generally were empathetic to our needs for our doggie. The people who work here obviously love animals and are super friendly. We are looking to Board our pooch when we go on our next mini vacay. I would take my doggie here next time for general shots and health and wellness. read more

I have not met the vets. The review is for their front staff. I adopted a puppy and to f/u on his vaccinations I came to this vet because it is the vet office the shelter/rescue uses for vaccines and spay/neuter. On the phone the person I spoke to questioned me so much, she sounded annoyed. After back and forth between her and rescue place I finally was able to make an appointment. On day of said appointment I was told by the same person who I am sure was the same woman I had spoken on the phone with that there was no appointment. And she played dumb asking me who I had talked to. Eventually they were able to squeeze me in after questioning same things again. When you first walk in, you greet them, they wont say a word, as a matter of fact they wont even fake customer service. Cold staff. read more

This is hands down the BEST vet I have ever worked with. My Pomeranian, Pebbles, was attacked by a Husky and tore up pretty badly. When I took her to a Vet Hospital in Oakland and they wanted $12k to perform her surgery. Broken hearted, I didn't think I had a choice. My friend referred me to Dr. Virk and after calling, he asked me to bring her in right away. Upon arriving, a tech came out to greet us and was so nice and welcoming. Dr. Virk came to meet me soon after and reassured me that she was going to be okay, but they wanted to keep her at the hospital for a couple weeks to help her heal properly. I was terrified, as she is basically my baby but I knew it was best. In total, Pebbles was in Alpine's care for 23 days. Felicia was on her surgical team and gave me her cell number to text for updates whenever I wanted. I was able to visit several times a week and call for updates (wait times were never an issue). During each visit, I got to know the staff and I must say, WOW! They all loved Pebbles as if she was their own and I am so thankful to have found Alpine Vet Hospital. Pebbles has made a full recovery and even after the fact, Felicia still responds to my text when asking follow up questions about Pebbles. If you love your animal and you want the best possible care team, Alpine is your place! They are 45 minutes away from our house but I am switching because I feel that strongly about Dr. Virk, Felicia and their team. Thank you so much for caring for Pebbles! What can I say about Alpine Vet?! So wonderful they treated me and my four footed family member like we were apart of their family, and they went above and beyond anything to make sure we were taken care of. My cat needed surgery on his leg and Dr. Virk and his staff did such a beautiful job taking care of him, they got me right in and no wait at all. Not only during, but after his surgery. My cat ended up having to go back into the hospital after surgery for some very common post operation results, and again Dr Virk and his team were wonderful. I was so worried and they did everything to make me feel so comfortable like sending me pictures and FaceTiming me and showing me that they were taking care of my baby like I would, and showing me he was safe and comfortable- giving me a peace of mind I needed. If you're thinking about taking your animals to Alpine I would recommend it over and over again.
