A quick side note that this place is in the same plaza as the Summerdale Driver and Photo License Center which, on Saturdays, resembles a Black Friday event with self-absorbed randos on their phones wandering into traffic. No doubt they are all complaining to someone about the long line out the door and how they probably had to change their plans for the rest of the day. I mention this because getting to Al's through the mob was dangerous if you enter from the light at the center of the intersection. Come in at the side toward the Dunkin' (and beware of those careless drivers as well). Al's is somewhat conveniently located off of I-81 just across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg, so a nice place when you're hungry and hitting the 81/83 interchange. There are a lot of dining options in the area and Al's does not call attention to itself with its modest signage. It is hidden behind a McD's and Dunkin's and you have to drive past a lot of other options going north or south before this place comes into view. Still, it is worth a try. In my circle of friends and family, I have as many who don't prefer this restaurant for various reasons as I know people who get excited when reminded it is still around and it's nearby for a quick lunch. If you want pizza and beer, it is well above average. Al's is one place where the only consistent thing I've heard from others is inconsistency. Some friends with similar tastes have very different opinions about their pizza. Others say they've gone with friends and been both pleasantly surprised by the improvements while others have been disappointed to come when it felt like the kitchen was off its game. I don't like sitting in the dining area surrounded by beer because people stand around and wait or they intrude on our space while checking out what is an impressive selection of beer options. The side dining area is quieter and slightly more comfortable, thought the seating is about as comfortable as your average fast food chair. I met with Dirk and our friend Erik the Stonecutter here at the top of their dining room service on a Saturday and the place seemed to be doing a lot of carry out business compared to the empty dining room. Because of this, we had great table service from the bartender. Dirk ate his slices of white pizza noting it was "utilitarian" in that it was pizza and it was edible. Erik, however, praised his cheesesteak which was massive and juicy. He took his with a 1/2 order of fries which is more than most full orders I've seen in this town. Erik is a regular here, so one of those who loves the kitchen and its hot subs. I tend to avoid the pizza because I've never had a slice that tasted like it wasn't reheated from much earlier in the day. This is the place I run to when I need a break from food experiments and just want something consistently delicious at a great price, served by friendly folks who know what they're doing. No chaos, no nonsense, no disappointment -- just good food every single time. It's finally time I give them the praise they deserve. There's plenty of parking since it's tucked into a strip mall, and the staff are always friendly, quick, and on top of things. I swear, Al's doesn't have "bad food days." Everything is always good and always tastes the same -- which is rare in a world where restaurant consistency seems to be a myth. Their tuna salad? My all-time favorite. I don't know what they do to it, but no one -- no one -- makes it like Al's. It's perfectly balanced: moist but not too moist, flavorful but not overpowering, seasoned just right. Paired with those dense, doughy sub rolls? Perfection. It's honestly one of my favorite meals ever. On this particular visit, I branched out a bit and tried the stuffed cheesesteak pizza, too, for the first time. It was everything I hoped it would be -- thick, doughy crust on top and bottom, filled with savory cheesesteak meat, and an extra cup of marinara sauce for dipping (which I happily used every drop of). And now we get to the dessert fridge. I still remember the first time I walked in after they installed it -- I nearly screamed. A fridge full of rotating desserts? Dreams do come true! These days, grabbing dessert from that glorious fridge is a mandatory part of the Al's experience. I've tried nearly every dessert they've stocked, but the Lemon Blueberry Mascarpone cake has my heart. That said, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Layer Cake I had this time came dangerously close to stealing the crown -- rich, fudgy, deeply chocolatey cake with peanut butter frosting that struck the perfect balance between sweet and nutty. And it was huge. Like, "probably shouldn't have eaten the whole thing but totally did" huge. Al's is -- and always will be -- a solid winner for me. Every single time. Without question. Placed an online order and forgot to add tip. Called in to add $5/16-17% (on top of a $3 delivery fee) in lieu of a handful of change at the door. The guy on the phone gave me some guff about it being $5, I found it rude in the way he addressed me as "young man" at the end of the call. I'd let it slide but when the delivery guy rang the doorbell, he broke it. The way it was buzzing after he left gave it away. The annoying part is he wasn't man enough to say anything.. this reflects poorly on Al's there off of 409 N. Enola Rd. I'm hoping/praying these two incidents were separate and not due to any disgruntled staff member. I'm afraid to order again, I'd avoid this place. read more

Pizza was too thick and chewy, conveyor belt, and sorry for being called pizza. I ordered a bowl of chili and waited. And waited. And waited some more until the waitress said there's been this bowl of beef macaroni sitting here and you can have that if you want. They forgot about your chili. What about five minutes left to stuff something down my throat along with the sorry piece of pizza I agreed and wolfed it down. I got through about half of it and had to leave and that sums up my experience here: halfway on service and halfway on quality. Stopped in late Saturday night. They had very good band playing classic rock and people were up dancing and enjoying themselves. Think they are doing bands on Saturday night which is great! Al's chicken cheesesteaks are shredded chicken (not cubed) and loaded with meat. Also had fries with melted cheddar. They have over 40 beers on tap and all are reasonably priced. Al's Pizza & Pub of Enola is our go-to place for solid food, friendly service, and good pizza. We eat at/take out from AL's a few times a month and the consistency is one of the things we love about AL's, because every time we visit the food is exactly as we are expecting, unlike other places where it depends who is making the pizza. We have sampled quite a few of their menu items and have never been displeased. The pizza, both NY and Sicilian style, is always hot, cooked correctly, and topped with good ingredients. The sauce and crust combination complement each other and one does not over power the entire pie. Their subs are amazing, due to the delicious roll they are made in. Everyone we've tried has been good with our two favorites being the Italian Sub and the Chicken Parm Sub. The dinner salads are loaded with ingredients and their burgers are also good! AL's has a full bar and a great selection of beers both on-tap and in bottles. Don't confuse this Al's with the one out of town. We prefer this AL's with its cozy dining area, friendly welcoming service, and great food! read more

I WOULD HAVE HAPPILY CALLED IN MY ORDER! I really would have. I just wanted to pick up a pizza to go and I only checked Al's of Enola's website to see what toppings they had. But by the time you can look at the menu and see the prices of things, you've already given them personal information, so I decided just to go ahead and complete the order online. I should have known by the fact that all of their online coupons had expired that I was about to experience a nightmare. Nevertheless, I proceeded blindly and arrived at Al's of Enola shortly before the time listed on my TWO EMAIL CONFIRMATIONS. When I got there, there was a line for the counter nearly to the door. I hate lines, but these guys already suckered me into paying them in advance, so I stood in line as two counter girls slowly and laboriously sludged through all the people in line ahead of me. I finally made it to the counter two minutes after the time on the email confirmation (I arrived 5 minutes early) and the counter girl was asking me all kinds of questions to find my order, hitting her touch screen all over the place. Apparently this fancy piece of equipment is not tied into the fancy online ordering system because they had not even put in my order yet. The mean manager girl went back to the back to see what was going on with my online order and comes back with "the ribbon broke." You mean to tell me that, in 2014, you have an online ordering system that is NOT interactive with your chief operating system AND runs with a frigging printer ribbon?!?! Meanwhile, you just handed me a receipt for the 6-pack of hard cider (seriously overpriced at $14) that was printed on a modern printer? WTF?!!? They were going to remedy the situation by giving me the crab pretzel they already started for another order while my pizza cooked. That would have been fine, if I was eating in - although it would have sucked for the people for whom that crab pretzel was intended. I told them that I did not want to bring home a $9 crab pretzel that had already been sitting around for several minutes while my pizza was cooking and I would wait. I have to mention the manager dude who was tap, tap, tapping away on an iPad the whole time, made eye contact with me, and was obviously aware of my situation yet never once came to talk to me or apologize for the mix up. Apparently these people have technology to spare, but can't seem to make a plain old pizza from an online order form. They certainly have no problem charging your credit card!!! I saw that manager bring my pizza to the counter. He looked me right in the eye while he did it. I saw the counter girl ask him where my crab pretzel was. My pizza sat on that counter, six inches from where the line at the counter ended. It sat there FOR SEVEN MINUTES (I watched all this go down and made a note of the time) while people reached over my pizza, handing the girl their money, coughing, sneezing, everything that people do. Sadly, that was not the most unhygienic thing I saw while I was at Al's of Enola. As I sat there, waiting for this ordeal to end, I watched this staff member hauling dishes in and out of the kitchen. The guy was enormous and was sweating buckets. His shirt was drenched, and his bald head had beads of sweat covering it like the bumps on a basketball. I watched the sweat roll down his face and neck, and I knew that at least some of it was getting on the dishes he was carrying -- and ya know what?? Some of those dishes he was carrying were "clean" too. If this is what's available for the public to see, can you imagine what goes on in the kitchen?!? While I was waiting for my hour-long, outrageously overpriced pizza, two young men walked in and told the same girl who "helped" me that they, too, had placed an online order. These boys also got the 1,000 questions and all the rigmarole I just went through and, sure enough, their order was not yet started either. I thought that when my crab pretzel was finally finished that my agony was over. I was looking forward to having some pizza and Al's of Enola does have a reputation for serving good pie. Sadly, this was not my experience. When I got the pizza home and opened it, there was LITERALLY a pool of grease in the corner of the pizza box. I will post a picture to compliment this review. It was disgusting. My whole crew only ate three pieces of the crap. Even the dog wouldn't eat the whole piece of crust we gave him. Not kidding. And, to add insult to injury, that pool of grease from the pizza box also left a big ol' grease stain all over my car seat - a permanent reminder of my miserable experience at Al's of Enola. Though I don't think anybody should ever go to Al's of Enola, they did slip me two coupons for free cheese slices for my trouble. I'll never go back, but they get away with this scot-free if I don't use those coupons - so free Al's of Enola coupons to the first person who requests them. read more

One of the best Greek chicken salads in Central, PA. I usually write a lot but that's pretty much what I have to say. They have pizza (which my family likes although I rarely eat pizza), the have wings (which my family likes but I think aren't crispy enough), they have lots of typical Central, PA sandwiches, subs, salads, and dishes found at an Italian pizza shop. They have a buffet, but it's filled with pastas and I don't like pasta. But . . . they have an awesome Greek chicken salad. I actually crave their salad. With lots of extra feta cheese and whatever they use for a dressing . . . yum. P.S. If you're a beer drinker, there are lots of options and some good specials. Stopped in this place on our way through PA to upstate NY. They offered dine-in which was perfect -- we wanted out of the car for awhile. The pizza was delicious, perfectly cooked. The crust had the perfect balance of crunch and chew -- couldn't have been better. I would have given it 5 stars but I'm a fussy New Yorker, haha, and a 5 star pizza has really gotta stand out. This was a solid pie though, and we wouldn't hesitate to get off I-81 here again on a future trip. The waitress was very personable too. And funny. Oh, and the wait was almost zero. I've been here before and prior to what just happened to me I would have given 5 stars. So here is why they get one now: I checked on their site, because I read they delivered beer. I asked the guy questions about it, because this was new to me. Prior to the call I checked to see if they would even deliver to me. Low and behold they did. I was so excited. When I was 18 I moved away and didn't come back and eat at Al's again until just this year (I'm 33 now!!), and let me tell you, this place is just as delicious as I remember it being!!! I can't tell you what their bread is made of, but the bread they use for their subs is absolutely divine! Al's Pizza and Subs is a lifelong favorite, and they've only gotten better with time. Sure you can come in for the killer all you can eat specials. They're amazing, with variety beyond the namesake of this establishment. You can also enjoy them as a tap house, bottle shop, and growler filler these days, which I think is really col. They have two sides, one maintaining that old pizza shop feel, and one with a rustic brew pub feeling. But there's one part of Al's that will forever hold my heart- day old sub rolls. These are the best rolls in the world, making these the best subs, and to take home day olds is a special treat when you get the chance. :) read more

In a strange snafu that had part of our party waiting at Al's of Hampden and the other part of our party waiting at Al's Pizza and Subs, we ended-up travelling to Al's Pizza and Subs to meet the part of our party that made a series of seemingly obvious mental errors. What do I describe as 'seemingly obvious mental errors'? Well, before we left, I gave the other party the address and he put it into his GPS. He pulled-out of the driveway and left in front of me. Allegedly though, his phone died and so they tried to pullover to inform me of that. I wasn't sure what he was doing, and I don't screw-around on the road, so I went around him when he pulled over and kept driving -- assuming that he was just letting me go first since he had no idea where he was going. Plus, he had two other phones at his disposal in his vehicle and could have called if it were important. Since he didn't, we went on our way.   Apparently, his solution was to just type 'Al's' into Google and then go to the first one that popped-up in Google search -- a logical misunderstanding. He arrived at Al's, sat down, and (here is where my issue starts) ordered one cheese pizza. Umm...why? When we were not present at the restaurant, the logical thing to do would be to call and see where I was. Nope, instead, the logical things to do were to order one large cheese pizza...then call me 5 minutes later and ask where I was. I sat in my car in the Al's of Hampden parking lot waiting for them because they were behind me, had a larger vehicle, and had a giant thing strapped to the rack on top of their car. Plus, they were not from the area, so it was plausible that he was taking extra time to arrive. Finally, I get a text message with a pic of where they were. I respond that they are in the wrong place. 'No big deal, here is the correct address', I thought, and texted them back the right address.  But then they called to explain that they already ordered one cheese pizza. Why the hell would you order food when we were going to eat as a group of 9? Furthermore, why would you order only one pizza? That makes no freaking sense. Plus, there are pizza/wing deals at every pizza place in the world when you order 'packages/specials', so why would you order everything individually - without the rest of your party? Omg... I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it. Food: I was so annoyed, that the only thing I ordered was wings - mild. In terms of the wings, they were well above average. I ordered them extra crispy. They came out hot and crispy, and their flavor was good. They were sauced appropriately and the bleu cheese that was served with them complimented the overall flavor of the wing. In terms of crispiness, sauce, and flavor, they were a solid 4. In terms of the other food ordered, there was a ham and cheese calzone and the stupid one cheese pizza. My wife said that pizza was above average, and the calzone we did not have any of. Food: 4 / 5 Service: The service was definitely 'spotty'. There were people there who I observed giving good service, and there were people there who clearly hated their lives. Pretty typical for a place such as this, I suppose. I asked for a cup of water four times before getting one. No, that is not an over-exaggeration. Once when ordering, once again while being rung up, once again after being rung up, and once again when he started to go on to the next people in line... ummm? Service: 3 / 5 Atmosphere: This place has all the feel of an old building that has never been updated over the years. It is a little dingy, low-lighted, and even a little bit depressing. In terms of cleanliness, it was borderline-OK. The bathrooms were also suspect. Overall, I didn't necessarily feel as if I was eating in the cleanest place, but did not see any glaring issues. Atmosphere: 3 / 5 Price: For what we ordered, the price seemed a little higher than other places, but not so much that it deserved a demerit. Price: 3 / 5 Final Thoughts: The whole experience was soured by a string of ridiculousness that was of no fault of Al's. Fortunately, I can really separate my personal feelings from the experience and be objective. We started the evening settling on Philly Cheesesteaks because they weren't from the area, and I had a great place lined-up (plus, that is what my family was craving). Then all of a sudden that changed on a whim to pizza (which I did not want, but then settled on Al's of Hampden). To then having to eat at a place I did not want to. I associate eating with happiness, and when I have my mind set on eating somewhere, to have that changed not once - but twice - really put me in a crap mood. Of course, and again, this is of no fault of Al's and I am glad I had the opportunity to try it, and vent at the same time... I would recommend giving this place a shot. read more

The bartenders will walk away as they are serving the entire pub as servers (not their fault) and today we waited over 20 minutes for a refill. We waited so long that we just left instead.
