What a great place to eat at RiverFront! It is adjacent to EJD. After I picked up my car from National Car Rental (great service too) my friend Kevin and I went there! I was impressed by their timely restaurant bylaws. Meals come in a timely matter by well dressed, well mannered waiters who knew the details of each meal! This is not Walmart, 50% of merchandise quality! Or Wendy's fast food! Oh no, well prepared professionally presented meals. Lambs were delicious! tasty super bowl of soup! I have real mixed feelings about this place. In all the time I lived in St. Louis, I never heard about it even though it was here. But more recently a STL native told me about it so I was interested in the opportunity to try it. First and foremost, this restaurant is in no man's land near the river and north of what i would call civilization. So you need to drive or cab there, even in daylight. As soon as you walk in, you know you are entering a bygone age; the fixtures and decor of the restaurant tell you that it hasn't been updated much since they rebuilt in 1968. As well, the wait staff have tenures unheard of in today's restaurant industry. The shortest we heard was 23 years. The other two waiters had 28 and 47 years at the restaurant. Which is why it is not surprising that they recite the entire menu from memory. You never see a menu which is probably as well because the room is dark enough that reading would be a challenge. After the appetizers, they bring a tray to the table to show you the meat offerings of the evening. And then, as some of the reviews indicate, the fun begins. There are some really interesting options to consider so getting a plain old piece of meat makes no sense. The sides were huge as expected in a steakhouse of this kind, so order accordingly. We all were impressed by the size of the portions. The surf and turf was well prepared and accompanied by a thrice baked potato the size of a football. One diner ordered the filet stuffed with prosciutto and gorgonzola and had trouble finishing it. Forget about a diet or avoiding coronary artery disease. Al's is a testament to cholesterol overdose. Desserts were massive as well. The bananas foster was over the top in size and taste. My one bit of advice is to be sure the waiters tell you the prices on whatever you decide to order. There is some sticker shock here, even for a prime steak house. One example was the stuffed filet for $70. Overall I recommend Al's for those who enjoy an evening on occasion of dietary excess as well as service that is nearly extinct in the current restaurant industry. read more

This is beyond it's time. Shockingly expensive for an old, smelly(best description I could think of)... outdated restaurant. The wine is served in out of date goblets and the food is mediocre at best. Price tag? $400 + for 4 and no bottle of wine ... simply unacceptable. read more

This is not the first time that my wife and I have been to Al's, the price does not bother us although we only go there for special events. We went last Friday, the 14th for my wife's birthday. There was only one other group in the restaurant and they left mid-way during our meal. I will start by saying that my wife's meal was very good and they did provide her a complimentary birthday cake. My order was a very simple one, the large Filet Mignon, When it came out it was very difficult to cut with the steak knife, the outside had a very heavy char. The inside was extremely dry, no juices at all from the meat. I ordered it Medium Rare. I showed it to the waiter who told me in a very condescending tone, that they would not make me another one, because they are all from the same loin. I ordered the strip steak, which was at least juicy although it too was heavily charred on the outside and more rare than medium rare on the the inside. I mentioned to the waiter that I make filets for my self at home every other week and had never had one that dry. He boasted that their grill is at 1400 degrees and sears in the meat immediately. This doesn't make a lot of sense since that would not explain why it was dried out inside, that should seal in the juices. The gentleman who greeted us and seated us was very friendly and so was the lady who brought tea and water. Our waiter needed an attitude adjustment, He had no humor and acted with a "holier than thou" persona. The restaurant was very clean, easy to tell because the lighting was not dimmed at all in the restaurant. The valet was very friendly and courteous. More of a disappointment than anything else. My NY Strip was under seasoned, my buddies' Filet Romano was less than adequate, and the T-bone was mediocre. Given the quality of food, the pricing is definitely inflated. I would have enjoyed a much better meal at Morton's or at Ruth's Chris for the similar price tag. Seriously Disappointing!!! Service extremely poor and value not up to reputation. I have thoughtfully considered this review, but decided it needed to be posted. New Year's Eve we went to Al's Steak House for dinner. We were two couples. One couple had been there and recommended it to us for a "special night out". We had also heard that it was a hidden gem in STL. We arrived early, had a reservation,(made several months ago), but our table wasn't ready so decided to have a drink at the bar. The four of us were the only ones at the bar. The bartender neither greeted us nor told us he would be with us but made drinks for waiters for table service. After about ten minutes (without service) we decided to go to our table, fortunately, it was ready. Please note: the restaurant was not crowded - plenty of open tables the entire time we were there. Once seated, we sat unattended until our waiter finally came over and we requested he take a drink order. We ordered appetizers, which were fine. Later, he wheeled a cart out and began to review the limited entree options, several beef, one lamb and several seafood - all ordered with a variety of sauces (specialties) and prepared to order. I believe there were a couple of pasta dishes. The food service was not organized, did not come out at the same time, one sauce was wrong, one forgotten. One steak was cold and had to be sent back twice (from someone who has never sent food back). Dessert was ordered by one couple. It was prepared table side and was tasty. Neither a wine list nor a menu was offered. Entrees were limited compared to what was shown on the website, one meager salad was offered and wine was not offered at all. Prices were not mentioned which we were aware of. We received an extremely expensive meal for poor service, both bar and table staff and apparently kitchen staff; for OK food that was presented in a mediocre fashion. The restaurant looked tired and outdated with terrible lighting (even our waiter agreed). Don't waste your time or money, there are lots of amazing restaurants in STL. The hotel we were staying at recommended Al's as a good steak house. Well... it was certainly interesting. First the food. The food was good - very good. Not the best steak I've had, but certainly very good. The service was good, even though it was from a bunch of old weird dudes in tuxes. The atmosphere was comical. It's a time warp back about 50 years. The restaurant was practically empty. The clientele was a little bizarre, but entertaining. Everyone was dressed up. We had on collard shirts and jeans, but the still let us in. I'm guessing it's because they can't really turn away any business when the restaurant is empty. Overall we had a good experience, but for the price and the hype, I'd expect a little more. read more

My wife and I have saved dining at Al's for special occasions, never to be disappointed, until now. The service was great with attention to the customer's needs/comforts, the décor and ambience was terrific. But the food was aweful. Wife ordered the Lobster tail which, when delivered, was the consistence of an old tire, not to mention barely luke-warm. She was unable to eat it and left it on the plate. I ordered the New York Strip steak and asked it to be cooked "medium". it was delivered medium rare, at best, and was too tough to chew. It was also full of stringy gristle that was not able to severed using a steak knife. I too, left most of it on the plate. The staff was top notch but the food not so much. I guess we will just have to find somewhere else in St. Louis for those "special events". This will be/was my last dining experience at Al's. read more

If you have had finer dinner service then you have probably dined at the White House during a previous administration. The service is impeccable and the food is delicious. The only reason this is not 5 stars is the dated decor. Hell I will add a fifth star because of the dated decor. Make sure you call ahead to make sure you can get the chocolate soufflé for dessert. I'm serious. If you go to al's and don't get the chocolate soufflé then it is all on you buddy. Be prepared to drop at least 250 but that is including a decent tip with soufflé. Enjoy. What I love about Al's is the service and food. No distracted amateur waiters here...these guys are good but not a nuisance. Also, there are not too many places where you can be offered a wide selection of meats and fish and given the choice of having it cooked/served however you want it. I love the cheese and ham stuffed filet! Granted, it is a bit old fashioned but I think it adds to the charm of the place. It isn't cheap but it is a great place to splurge or celebrate a special occasion. It is also nice that they have been around a long time and have held to a high standard. I also like that it is a locally operated place...not some franchise or one of hundreds type of place. Weekends are busier but you can usually get in but you can always call and get a reservation. read more

I went to Al's for the first time (but definitely not the last!) this weekend, and 5 stars are simply not enough! It was a dining experience. All of the waiters have been there for decades, and they make you feel immediately that you're part of something special by being there. Al's has never had a printed menu, so the waiters describe your options for each course at your table - so much goodness that it's almost a sensory overload! The good news is that you can't make a bad decision, as everything will be delicious. read more

Wow! Amazing. First of all, Al's food is beyond good! Many people say that it is quite expensive and not worth it. Although once you see the MARVELOUS food right in front of you, you'll think otherwise. Second, the workers there are so nice! A little while after we ordered the food, one man showed us a tour of the historical restaurant. They have all the same chairs, and tables from 1925. It is all very clean and welcoming. Lastly, my family and I loved the area because it wasn't just a restaurant, but it felt like a cool museum as well! Overall, I think this restaurant gets a 5 out of 5 rating! This place is a piece of Saint Louis history! It's a gem! I don't know why people are giving poor reviews? It's old school, no menu, the knowledgable staff describes the mouth-watering offerings with an attention to detail. The service is excellent! And the food...AMAZING!! The attention to detail, the staff just waiting to clear any crumbs left so he could ask us about desert, which we just had coffee. Went to Al's for the first time last weekend. First off, if you are expecting this to be a lively steakhouse with a great bar scene, keep moving. This is a true classic that exudes 1950's classics. The service is fantastic, essentially they will cater to your every need but only make their presence known when needed. The food is phenomenal, probably one of the top five steaks that I've had in any restaurant. The only downside was the lack of a decent wine menu and no description on the wine itself. If you are going to buy a bottle of Silver Oak, they should at least tell you the year. And the music was all top 40 which is completely the opposite of the atmosphere. read more

We had heard about Al's for a long time(they have been there 85 years) and finally made the trip. Not many people in the dining room but that was a plus. Atmosphere was classic, service was extremely attentive and professional, and the food was very good. No menus, canneloni app was superb, charbroiled porterhouse cooked to temp, and very tasty linguine with clam sauce as a side. The problem here is that this restaurant is an elaborate sham. The deliberateness of the deception undermines any credibility. You can see that there are two camps here, those that give this place a high rating and those that have realized that they have been tricked. The people that give this place a high rating are victims of what is commonly called consistency bias. The absence of menus is no accident, as you will certainly be surprised by the price. I had a steak, one cannelloni, and half a potato and the bill was $100 (no wine). I've happily spent $500 per person on Michelin starred meals before so it's not just the price. The waiter comes in and shows you the meat which is puzzling because it obviously isn't of notable quality at all. At the end ask yourself why they want to shake your hand before you look at the bill. It causes cognitive dissonance that forces you to either justify the amount you spent by believing that it was a special occasion, which it wasn't, or accept that you've been duped, which you have. This place is empty for reason, it's just a scam to burn tourists. read more

Worth the (less than) 30 minute drive out from the city. Took my folks and two others on a Saturday night. Out-stan-ding service. Huge steaks and sides prepared perfectly. It's nice to go to a friendly, casual steakhouse without any attitude. Natasha, Al's manager, really took a personal interest in our satisfaction. In town for a convention. Took a few minutes before anyone greeted us at the door. Quiet atmosphere, wonderful service. No printed menu but they had way too many selections of everything. It is better to be good at a few things than mediocre at a lot. Salad was fabulous. Very limited selection of wine. Steak and lamb were both so overcooked it was difficult to cut. This was my first time there and I will NOT be back. It was my husband's 40th birthday, and I should've waited till he was 75. The place was empty, old decor, NO menus and waiters hand picked from the furneral parlor. The food was terrible! I'm sure the shrimp were frozen, the steak was tough, and tasteless and not cook as I ordered. Then my husband go a free piece of cheesecake that was gross. Then to top it off, THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD 20% MORE THAN MY BILL WAS EVEN THOUGH I LEFT A CASH TIP! Had such a sad meal here. Went with my family, a friend and her nephew, had talked this place up because it (used to be) good. Got seated and then ignored for 15 minutes. Finally grabbed a waitress, and while she was apologetic about the situation and immediately started taking care of us, there was no coming back. I had pulled a couple bottles of amazing wine from my cellar that I'd been saving for a special occasion for about 15 years, the wine service was clumsy at best. And then there's the food: it sucked. My steak tasted like it had sat in the window for 30 minutes. You can't charge prices like this if you're going to have Waffle House service. The only high point of the evening was the couple at the next table over who got so drunk they had to be helped out of the restaurant. This is the best restaurant St Louis has to offer. We had my daughters rehearsal dinner here at AL'S. We had 67 guest at the rehearsal dinner and it was an unforgettable evening for my daughter and her fiancé. Everyone ordered whatever they wanted Filet, NY Strip, Salmon, Chilean Sea Bass, Lobster Tail etc. One of the great things about AL'S are all the different ways you can have all of the above entrees prepared. I had the Beef Romano Filet, my wife had the Lobster Savoy which were both cooked to perfection. For dessert they prepared 67 Chocolate Souffles, just unbelievable! The servers are experts and cater to your every need. The history of AL'S is a story in and of it's self. The restaurant has been run by Al's daughter for about the last 15 years and she has stayed true to her dad's ways of doing business. The food was of the highest quality as expected and the restaurant personal did not skip a beat. After dinner we went into the River Boat Bar for some drinks. This bar is like something you have never seen. The mural that is painted around the bar is of the Mississippi River front from the 1800's and the bar itself is constructed like a river boat from that same era. If you like first class food and service and would like to experience a taste of St. Louis history, then you need to try AL'S. read more
