We stopped here during our wine outing with friends and we were super glad we did! We were a group of 6 and showed up without a reservation and Nathaly greeted us at the door like we were old friends who hadn't seen each other in a while. We asked if we were able to do a tasting and luckily for us, a large group canceled before we arrived so we were helped out right away. Nathaly immediately started pouring the awesome wines with her super friend vibe. The wines were awesome for sure, we enjoyed the Viognier quite a bit and all of the reds they poured, but my favorite was probably the Toasted Slope and the Petite Syrah, really bold but approachable wines and we ended up taking a few bottles home. What really made this place special was the awesome service from Nathaly though, we had a great time with her for sure. She took us back to check out the barrel room and tasting area back there, and let us know about the vineyard tasting they arranged by reservation. We were super intrigued so we ended up booking that vineyard tasting the next morning with her which only could really be described as an incredible experience. I would highly recommend booking the vineyard tasting if you're able, I would do it again in a heartbeat. We had such a good time here and enjoyed the wines so much we signed up for the membership. Well, I should say we tried to sign up, but there's a waiting list so we are now on that list. Here's to hoping we'll be on the membership soon. A small production family winery whose tasting room is collocated with Villicana. The tasting room is small, really small. The lady that poured for us appeared to be a family member, and was well versed in all their wines. We tasted the following here: 2010 Claudia Cuvée - a white, ok; but I was looking for reds! 2009 Mourvèdre - not bad, but I am not a Mourvèdre fan 2010 Toasted Slope Syrah - good; my favorite, and we took a bottle 2010 Ann's Block Petite Sirah - good; but not my favorite Petite Sirah 2010 Late Harvest Vigonier - my wife really liked this, so we took a bottle I was hoping to taste their Old 900 Syrah, but they either weren't pouring it that day or they were sold out. Maybe next time! Our tasting was comp'd due to a Yelp check in offer. They honored even though i was having trouble checking in in the tasting room. All in all, I liked Alta Colina and would recommend stopping and tasting their wines. I'm leaning towards 3.5 stars for them. read more

We were so fortunate to have Bob Tillman, the owner and former winemaker, lead us through our tasting at Alta Colina. Not only did he answer our many questions about the terroir and the winemaking process, but he gave us some absolutely delightful wines to taste. The Grenache Blanc was fantastic and quite unique, as was the carbonic Grenache. The reds were a treat, including my favorite, a Durif (also known as Petite Sirah). This place is a hidden treasure! My brother and Sister-in-Law brought my wife and I here today. It was a roller coaster ride for the pallet! Our favorites were the Viognier and Petite Syrah, which surprised me because my wife has never been a fan of Syrah. Oh honey !!!!! I loved her. Best winery dog yet. The wine was delicious and the price point for this quality is a steal of a deal. Like others, Toasted Slope was my fave. The wines tasted very "clean" (if that makes sense). Maggie was knowledgable (as to be expected as she/her family owns the winery I believe) but also funny and down to earth. No pretense which was refreshing and appreciated. TR is small so I'd imagine weekends might get busy?? Maybe call and see if you can get an appointment or something because it'd be a shame to miss this winery if you're in the Adelaida district. Family run, estate bottled wines. Apparently, Yelpers give high ratings to this location because they offer TWO FREE TASTINGS for a check-in. I couldn't get to the over-dramatic, rave review level after sampling their wines. This winery is deserving of a try by anyone who is in the Paso area. You might find something you like here. Wines are made in the Rhone style which may please your palate. They are on the same road as three of the best wineries in the appellation - Le Cuvier, Adelaida and Tolo. We would encourage Yelpers to visit and make sure they check-in through their smart phones. Reception can be a bit sketchy in the area. Mrs. Tillman and her daughter were pouring the day we went. We dropped in this last Saturday on our way back into town from the West side, as we noticed the new tasting room on the hill next to Villicana. We've had their wines at numerous tasting events over the years and met the team, but this time we had them (and their new tasting room) all to ourselves in the new building open just three weeks. Bottom line - the Rhone varietals are exceptional, and their Toasted Slope Syrah rivals the Cote Rotie in the Northern Rhone. Masculine, bold, a touch of Viogner. I've seen their grapes in other winemakers efforts in previous years, but if you want to taste perhaps the ultimate Syrah of Paso Robles that rivals Guigal, this is the place. We're going to take a tour of this fabulous vineyard the next time we come back ( France is too far to drive). Bravo! read more

Without a doubt, one of the most unique, differentiated and overall best winery experience (includes visits to Paso, Napa, Sonoma, Santa Barbara and Monterey)! So, what made it so special and different, literally a little slice of heaven? First, my visit began with me arriving early and before they had actually opened. I was immediately met in the parking lot, with a vibrant and smiling Melissa Swanson, with a perfectly chilled and very tasty Rose. Her exuberance, genuinely welcoming me, made me instantly feel at home and definitely set the stage for the main event... The 'Summit Vineyard Tasting' - An intimate, personalized tasting (limited to 4 participants - it just so happened on this day, I was the sole guest), conducted by the founder of Alta Colina - Bob Tillman or, in my case, AC's co-owner, Maggie Tillman, Bob's daughter. There is the tasting room on Adelaida Rd, THEN there is THE 'tasting room' a mile away, up to the top of Toasted Slope Hill - approximately 1,250 ft higher in elevation. As Maggie chauffeured, literally through the vineyard, she passionately provided me an overview of the 15 blocks of grapes and the corresponding types of Rhone styled wines they produce. In particular, she emphasized the change of altitude afforded Alta Colina, providing the geographical advantage of greater sun exposure and extended maturation time of the fruit. (This was just the beginning of my 'education'). There at the top of the hill, was a majestic oak, shading a wooden deck, not only overlooking the entire Alta Colina vineyard, but thousands of acres of oak forest within the Coast Range as well as, other surrounding vineyards for as far as the eye could see. As we approached the deck through a vine row, Maggie stopped and pointed out 'veraison', the grapes were beginning to change color, ripen. Being I had never been in the middle of an actual vineyard, much less actually touching vines and grapes firsthand, this led me to numerous questions, which Maggie enthusiastically, patiently and effortlessly addressed. From the difference of 'head trained' vines, to demonstrating how their vines are pruned to only two 'spurs', our conversation continued on to the shaded deck where Maggie poured four wines - Grenache Blanc, Carbonic Grenache, GSM and Petite Sirah. I found each to be very distinct and thoroughly enjoyable. I was most intrigued with the Carbonic Grenache - 'carbonic' (once again learned something else about wine making) as Maggie explained the actual fermentation process takes place in an environment of dry ice and CO2 gas and occurs within the berry vs the juice. Please allow me to emphasize the fact that this entire 90 minutes felt like I was sharing questions, knowledge, thoughts and ideas with my best friend. Maggie had no script, no predetermined 'sales pitch', she was just being herself and letting me take our conversation wherever I wanted to go. I ended my visit back at the Adelaida Rd tasting room to enjoy a glass of the Carbonic Grenache and try another of their reds, 'BTG Red'. In true Alta Colina hospitality and family spirit, Maggie had gone to get Bob and introduced us. I could see the pride and passion in Mr. Tillman's face as I extolled the greatness of Maggie, Toasted Slope and their wine. Had I not had another appointment forthcoming, I have no doubt he would have insisted that the three of us share more wine and conversation out on the patio. Thus, the environment, experience and vibe that makes Alta Colina SO special...I can't wait to return!!! read more

Maggie (vineyard owners daughter) poured 5 of their 10 wines. The Grenache Blanc/ Marsanne blend was smooth, refreshing & light. The Viognier was exceptional with a great unique flavor and finish. The GSM Blend & Toasted Slope Syrah were both excellent. Purchased a half case mix of last three which speaks more than just words. 10% off if u purchase a case. Visiting wineries that are a bit off the beaten path and small are my favorite spots when touring wine regions. Alta Colina embodies the boutique winery vibe and their wines are top notch. The tasting room is a cozy bar adjacent to Villacana's tasting room. Maggie helped my siblings and I and it felt like we were hanging out with an old friend who gave us great recommendations for other wineries to visit as well as places to eat in town. Again, I can't say enough positive things about the wines. Bold, easily pairable with foods and perfect for special occasions. A must visit if you're in Paso Robles. read more

Dropped by on a whim based on the Yelp reviews and thought the wines were good but a bit on the pricey side. They are very difficult to find since they share the property with another winery (called Villa something) so if you're looking for a Alta Colina sign, you won't find one! The owners said it fell down and since they'll be moving to their own property soon, they didn't put up a new one. Make sure you have your GPS on when trying to find it!! So my review is based on the current setup, which may not be as accurate once they move to their new location. Currently, Alta Colina is renting a small "back office" area behind Villicana so it sort of feels like a makeshift wine tasting room where you walk past Villicana, up a small ramp, and then enter a small one-windowed tasting room. The woman who works there was extremely knowledgable and friendly and really made the experience better than it might have been. Their wine tastings are $10 (but you can get 2 free if you check in on Yelp!), and most of their bottles ranged from $30-50 each. If you're looking for lower-priced wines, unfortuantely you won't find it here. The rest of the property is actually very nice, but again, it's really owned by Villicana. There's a small green lawn with several tables and chairs that you can relax during your tastings, or you can sit on one of two cushioned patio chairs by Alta Colina. In terms of the wines that I tasted, I didn't find them to my liking as they were heavier and had more tannins than I'm used to. However, my companions who are bigger wine drinkers really enjoyed the wines and bought one of the $45 bottles because it was so good. If you like Cabernets and Grenaches, then this place may suit you well. I'm sure that once they relocate to their own property, Alta Colina will become a more frequented and popular winery. However, as it is now, it will remain one of those hidden "diamind in the rough" type of establishments. read more

My wife and I had the pleasure of tasting here on a slow Thursday afternoon. It may have been our off day, but not for this winery. We were actually served by a gentleman out of the barrel room! The white blends were above average, however, the day belonged to the Syrahs. Both vintages were robust and complex, yet mellow enough for us to enjoy. The brix levels on these wines must have been high because the alcohol content was pretty substantial. But I guess that was the beauty of these wines, one couldn't tell that these were quote, unquote "hot." We took home both the '12 and '13 vintages. We highly recommend others sharing in the enjoyment! read more

The 07 Syrah that we bought was later opened in a blind tasting, and ranked the highest of the line up. I recently planned and hosted a catered dinner event at Alta Colina for 35 guests in honor of a retiring Army General Officer. There was a lot of indecision and lack of coordination on our end and Melissa, the tasting room manager and event planner, was SO patient and accommodating! Together, she and Maggie (one of the owners- LOVE family run places, btw!), were super flexible and generous through the planning and execution and I can't sing their praises enough! Alta Colina is just starting to offer the venue for small events and they have a few different room options which is great. We had the appetizers and wine tasting in the cellar (which is a delightfully chilly so pack a sweater) and we had the dinner in the fermentation room which is awesomely rustic and cozy (see pic)! They attended to all of the finer details, liaised with the caterer, went above and beyond in many ways AND are big fans of supporting the military. Also, several of the guests are wine aficionados so I was eager to hear what they thought of Alta Colina's wine. I think the bottles/ cases/ memberships purchased that evening speak for themselves! Shout out to Lindsey, the sommelier, who offered the tastings at the event and to Honey, the shepherd, who just makes the place even more cool! Block 900 is also great.. and they make my favorite GSM of all time with Sun Worshiper. Might be a weird comment, but my favorite thing about Alta wines is the color!
