I'm a chocolate lover so I chose the Reeses and and Red Velvet flavors. Both were rich, creamy and tasty. The red velvet didn't really taste like red velvet to me but it was delicious. It just didn't give that signature flavor. Since they are located at the same counter as the sushi restaurant, it doesn't really feel like a gelato or ice cream shop but that isn't a dealbreaker. It's a cute idea, set up in the Canal Park. The gelato was good, but a little overpriced. It's set up at the same place as the Asian-fusion quick service restaurant. It was confusing to figure out if this was a chain or a local place and where/how the gelato was made. A lot of flavors were out as well. Service was fine, but it took a long time for them to scoop the gelato since they were busy preparing orders for the food side. It's a cute spot if you're in that park and want something to snack on, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there with all of the other great ice cream spots in the area. Now I know they change their flavors, but let me just tell you now, the caramelized banana is LIFE CHANGING. The other flavors are good too, but if they have the caramelized banana and you are not allergic to bananas, GET IT. The passionfruit and pistachio is also pretty good. I hear the matcha and ube is good too. But honestly, despite the plethora of flavors, I would still prefer to go to Pitango simply for the quality of the gelato. This gelato shop enjoys an auspicious location in a glassy building that highlights Canal Park, which is shared with Wiseguy pizza. It's a nice setup. I was quite disappointed to find that one of their display cases appeared to have broken and was empty. I wonder if they are waiting until the weather warms up to fix it and unleash the full flavor selection again. Regardless of the timeline on those repairs, even though the creme caramel and extra dark chocolate flavors are not what I would have chosen given more of a selection, the flavors they did have were suitably impressive. The extra dark chocolate lived up to the name; I wouldn't recommend it for everyone as I have a high tolerance for bitterness, but it combined well with the sweeter caramel. The price was about what other gelato shops in DC would have you expect; it's a premium dessert. What sets this shop apart-aside from that huge flavor selection they had when I visited over the summer for a Yelp Elite event-is their selection of non-gelato add-ons, including dipped cones and various pastries. I stumbled upon this when visiting DC over the weekend for a conference. My friends and I had dinner in Navy Yard, but we were craving something sweet thereafter. A quick Yelp search populated Altani Gelato. Being the 'try every flavor' person that I am, I did just that. I sampled just about everything. Altogether this made for a great evening out at Altani. Altani's prices are on point for what you purchase in the area and for the quality of product. The space is clean and bright, with "traditional" flavors you'd find in most gelato shops (nutella, pistachio, for ex); and non traditional, creative flavors (purple sweet potato, anyone?). And I was most excited that other than the fruit sorbets which are obviously dairy free, they also had an extra dark chocolate dairy free option. Ever since I visited Italy, I have been hunting for a dairy free extra dark chocolate gelato that has the same depth and creaminess - and I'm so excited that I found it here! This may be my favorite gelato place!!! As much as I love Pitango, Altani offers more flavors that are quality gelato and very unique! It's connected to Wise Guys since they're the same owner. Plenty of seating. Clean, modern decor. The staff are really friendly. Be sure to ask for samples! I loved my ube and matcha gelato. They were authentic and very creamy and soft. I'm not very familiar with the Navy Yard area so I quickly Yelped a place and it directed me to Altani Gelato! It's located on M St. in the same building as WiseGuy Pizza. When I walked in I literally heard angels singing. The flavors displayed looked unique and dangerously delicious. I dropped into Altani for the first time and was pleasantly overwhelmed by all of the beautiful flavors of gelato. They were happy to let me try as many as I wanted and my favorites were definitely the Oreo, Pecan, and Baklava. I got a small waffle cone which includes two scoops, super generous. The gelato was perfectly balanced and not too heavy or sweet. I enjoyed it on the patio which was covered and breezy. This made for a perfect summer reprieve. If you have kids, they'd have a ball combining bright and unique flavors. The Miss Purple yam would appeal to any tiny human lol! And they have a water fountain park immediately next door where they can splash and cool off. They also have gorgeous French style pastries and espresso! Cute gelato place in Navy Yard. I've been to Ice Cream Jubilee a few times and wanted to check out this gelato place. The young lady working was friendly and let me try as many flavors I wanted. They have a good amount of options and have even more when it's spring/summer. They have a few different sizes and I got a kids which was one flavor and I got Oreo. It comes with an optional wafer. I first discovered Altani at a Yelp event and it was so good that I came back again today with my sister for another taste! Last time I was here I had the green tea matcha and sweet potato. We also tried other flavors as well, but my two favorite sorbets were definitely the mango and lemon. So this time, we came back and got the mango, lemon, and strawberry sorbets! For those who are dairy intolerant, they have a nice selection of sorbets that are so creamy and rich, you'll forget that it's even sorbet! Unlimited free samples--but be careful because you'll end up liking all of them and end up getting 4 or 5 cups ;) You may notice that the sizes seem "small" (but it's honestly comparable to Ben & Jerry's or Baskin Robbins' sizes), but trust me, they give you a good amount and not too much, for good reason. Like I mentioned, it's VERY creamy and rich. I think if you had anything more than what they serve in a 'large', you'll start feeling sick. So honestly, I think the small size was the perfect amount. Take your time and savor every bite! We also enjoyed the pastrami croissant, which I personally think is the best pastry on the menu. If you have a sweet tooth, I think you'd enjoy the fruit tart or the cinnamon roll. We didn't have the coffee this time around, but last time we had a cold brew and that was fantastic! My sister, who is a coffee snob by the way, LOVED the coffee! I believe they occasionally rotate the coffee origins/mixes around too. Altani is conveniently located right next to the Navy Yard metro station. When you exit, turn left, cross the street and you'll see a water fountain (and several little kids running through the fountain screaming if it's summertime). Altani shares a space with Wise Guys Pizza, which I believe is owned by the same person. It's a perfect combo! The staff are super friendly too. Great gelato and pastries! I don't like French pastries (that includes croissants especially), but I'll admit, they're actually quite good here! Typically, such pastries are too dry, stale-tasting, and crumbly for me, but here at this place, they're softer and fresher-tasting. Of course, they're still not as good as those in Montreal, Canada or France. But putting that aside... The croissants I tried here were almond, coconut chocolate, pistachio, pastrami, and chocolate twist ("chocolate torsade," with chocolate chips). Almond was boring and plain, pastrami was okay, but coconut chocolate, pistachio, and chocolate torsade were fantastic, all so indulgingly buttery and soft. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I could go back to this place just to have their croissants again! Wow, I never do this for ANY of that places (in the USA, at least. I'll gladly eat all croissants in Canada and France). ***However, do come earlier in the day for fresh pastries. Not 1-2 hours before closing time because I tried a pistachio croissant one night and it wasn't as good as I remembered--it tasted weirdly sweet, cinnamon-y, and creamy; there was no pistachio taste. It tasted so different from the first time I tried it! I think you really have to try it fresh so that you can truly taste the pistachio. Many of the gelato flavors were great. Extra dark chocolate was delicious and paired oh-SO-well(!) with amarena cherry. I'm not crazy about fruit in ice cream (or even any kind of cherry sweets), but that combo of dark chocolate and cherry was seriously DA BOMB! A must-try! Ferroro rochero (that was such a cool flavor!) and hazelnut were also fantastic. Mint, Nutella (very Nutella-y!), straciatella, and nocciola (hazelnut) were not as amazing but still very good. Please note that I'm biased towards chocolate, so non-chocolate flavors don't impress me much (well, except for that amarena cherry!). Pistachio, Oreo, Reese's, red velvet, and blood orange all ranged from "okay" to "good but nothing worthwhile." Raspberry was very tart, and mango was incredibly thick and creamy (I don't like mango and still don't like it after trying this flavor). Oh, and affogati was delicious. Tried this place for the first time today and had gelato and a croissant. While they allowed me to test numerous flavors, for a regular sized scoop you get three scoops (for a small you get two) and I chose coconut, salted caramel and carrot cake. Yes, carrot cake. I hadn't seen carrot cake gelato before but it was tasty--not too strong of carrot but a light hint and there were small carrot pieces in it. The coconut was my favorite and it is topped with dried coconut. For the croissant, I had the regular almond and the pistachio croissants. Both were tasty but my favorite was the pistachio. Layers of pistachios, flakey and a little sticky (which I didn't mind). Not too far from the Navy Yard metro and plenty of outdoor seating. Check it out! read more

Really cute place at least on the inside! I would not have expected there to be gelato in this odd building if I had not been tipped off by Yelp! The chocolate gelato was deep and dark and lovely, she mentioned it was dairy free (like many other places) but as usual I love it so much for the depth of flavor and this was one of the best yet that I've had (I get dark chocolate everywhere). Bottom line - steller everything... love the Gelato, pastries, and coffee! Gelato - the pistachio have massive chunks of real pistachio on top... not just a few bits here and there. Velvet cake was heavenly with real velvet cake sitting top. We ordered two "regular" sized gelatos in cups for $6.55 each. A regular size gets you two flavors. Unfortunately, the server only filled our cups half full; it was a very small amount of gelato! Had the pleasure of coming to Altani through an Elite event and I have to say, I was so pleasantly surprised. Definitely an excellent spot to grab a bite of gelato. My partner and I got to sample as many flavors as we liked and we couldn't find one that wasn't awesome. The gelato is incredibly thick and creamy and dense. Full of flavor as well, not too sweet but just the right amount! They also serve house-made pastries which are amazing. I had one of the best croissants I've had in DC. T.he croissant is perfectly French-style, with lots of flaky buttery layers and the outside has the right amount of crunch. I got to try the pastrami croissant and from first looks, it doesn't look like much but holy moly, it was soooo filled with pastrami and it was soo good. If you're in the area, drop by! Discovered this gelato place that shares space with Wiseguys at a Yelp Elite Event. They were so kind to offer us up to 3 flavors with a cup or cone, totally free of charge. I got the cheesecake, pistachio, and vanilla with a red velvet cone. The cheesecake flavor was surprisingly my favorite - it had a really yummy strawberry topping and was smooth and luscious. I've heard from so many people in the neighborhood that this place is fantastic so on a hot DC summer night I walked my dog over and did just that. For a sweet treat I usually go for chocolate so the Oreo gelato stood out but I got a sample to try the strawberry cheesecake and OH WOW. It did NOT disappoint! Hands down the best ice cream in South DC. I've been to all of them (except for Southwest Soda Pop) so I know. It's not that the others are bad, on the contrary. If you have ice cream at Trickling Springs or Pitango in Eastern Market, at Dolcezza at the Wharf, or at Jubilee in Yards Park you'll probably be very happy, and sometimes I do that (my bf swears by the cookie sundae at Jubilee), but Altani's ice cream flavors are a cut above. The lemon cookie gelato is my favorite right now, but who knows what they'll come up with next. The only true competition for best spot this place has in the city IMHO is Jeni's on 14th (but hey that's NW and there are other good ones up there). Altani Gelato, located by a multi-colored outdoor fountain, tucked under the corner of what would be Navy Yard's winter skate rental, and neighbors with Wise Guy Pizza, is a colorful small store that overwhelms with its impressive gelato display. I didn't go to the yelp event (and now I'm sad I didn't!), but came across this after sushi when my boyfriend and I had a hankering for dessert. We tasted several options, but settled on Roche (chocolate hazelnut, think ferero roche), tiramisu, and lemon cookie - you can fit 3 flavors in a large and 2 flavors in a regular. All three flavors were really delicious. A quick note for the size naysayers - granted, the cup is a little small for what would be standard ice cream fare, but like other reviews have mentioned, it's incredibly rich and creamy to the point where you can definitely share a large with someone and you won't need more (this is coming from a person who has a sweet tooth). I recently found out Altani serves more than just gelato. During they week they open at 7am and have a variety of caffeinated beverages and in-house baked pastries. I stopped in one morning grabbed a cup coffee and a hazelnut croissant. The hazelnut croissant was out of this world, and now I want to try them all! I've also had their gelato, which is good, but I prefer to come for the coffee and pastries. They're a little pricey, but I use it as an incentive not to visit as often. read more

Located in the same building of the Wiseguy pizza, I often tend to stop by for a dessert right after my hefty pizza meal. While the pricing is a bit steep (at $5 a scoop), the taste of the flavors is good. The gelato isn't overwhelmingly sweet, which I kinda craved after a few bites. I initially wanted to order a Stracciatella flavor, but I saw no evidence of chocolate chips in the gelato. I ended up ordering the Cookies and Cream flavor that I ordered again, had no evidence of cookies, which fell short of my own personal expectations. Cute small gelato shop integrated into the Wiseguy pizza offshoot in Navy Yard. Had it after grabbing lunch at the aforementioned wiseguy and got the cookies and cream flavor and was not let down. It tasted fresh and creamy and despite not being as separated out into cookie parts and cream like many cookies and cream ice creams are, it still retained the appropriate flavor. They allowed us to sample as many flavors as we wanted prior to trying (using steel spoons instead of disposable ones, a small but noticeable nicety). One downside is that there was only one person manning the stand and a decent queue had formed up, although I imagine one person is more than enough for the remaining quieter hours of the day. I've been here 4-5 times and am never disappointed! There are so many flavors to choose from and the staff is happy to give samples to help you decide. Can't narrow it down to just one (or two) flavors? I love that you can pick 2 flavors in the small cup and 3 flavors in the medium cup. My favorites are coffee and lemon. My daughter loves coffee, mint and purple sweet potato. Hubby digs red velvet. I tried several of the freshly made French pastries last night - all were light and flaky.
