I've eaten at both German restaurants in Fredericksburg starting with "A," and Altdorf Biergarten is the better of the two. Altdorf Biergarten seems a little more upscale, although it's still definitely casual. Chicken Schnitzel is my go-to German order, and their Chicken Schnitzel was decent, but the other one was dry. My husband got a sausage that came with fries, and the fries were amazing. Despite it being a summer weekend, we were seated promptly, and our food came out quickly. Drove quite a distance for German Food. Based on information on your website thought this would be a great place. I ate the entree I ordered simply because it was so expensive. My wife tried but hardly touched hers. The red cabbage had a spice that was not recognized and an assault to the pallet. Spatzel wreaked of garlic and the pork schnitzel was dry and flavorless. Pretty sure it was a commercial product. Would advise caution. Especially with the price of eating out these days. read more

So excited to eat here after reviewing the menu. The first thing that ruined the atmosphere was the country music? If I wanted country music, I'd have gone to a country bar or restaurant. Next was the service, mediocre at best, the restaurant was not busy but the staff was busy on phones. Actually the gal bussing tables walked around the entire time talking on her phone through her ear buds. Ok the food, the wurst plate was actually pretty good, 3 types of meats, sauerkraut and warm potato salad. The Goulash was very disappointing, first of all there were 4 small bites of meat, second the sauce tasted like tomato soup and spatzle was mushy. There were several other German restaurants in town, I'd suggest maybe trying them. Next time that's what we will do. read more

My husband and I went there for the first time while vacationing. Fredericksburg was very crowded and although we had to wait here for our table, it wasn't too long of a wait. Our waitress was very nice and we would give her a five 5. Her name was Steph P. and she was very pleasant despite how busy the restaurant was. My husband got the Reuben sandwich and said he would give it about a three 3. He said it was OK, but it did not have the same flavor profile as other Reuben sandwiches he's had before. I had a hamburger, but had them put the sausage on the side. I'm so glad I did because I did not like the sausage, however, I'm not a huge fan, so far, of German food. The size of the hamburger was definitely a five 5 and it definitely filled me up, but I would give it about a four 4 in flavor. We both got the German Meatballs as an appetizer and we're so glad we did. We really enjoyed the flavor profile of those and would give them a five 5. I ordered a side salad and my favorite thing was the candy pecans that came with it, but there wasn't a whole lot of them. I was not crazy about their homemade ranch, but at least they had homemade ranch and not the kind in the packet. We sat by the windows and would give the atmosphere where we sat a five 5. I don't know that we'll ever go there again, but I would recommend their German meatballs as an appetizer and my husband said he thought those would be great in a meal also. read more

We were the 3rd party at 11:01am, 1 min after opening time! Nice interior with spacious outdoor eating area. We dined indoor bc of the wind. The service was friendly & quick. Now the food: The currywurst was good, loved the tomato sauce that came with it. We loved the sausage sampler. The German potato salad was just ok. My son loved the gulash with spatzel was good. The jagerschnitzel was ok, the pork cutlet was crispy with flavor, but the mushroom gravy was totally bland, like they forgot to season it. If you go to this place, go EARLY! The crowd HEAVY came around 11:30. By 12:00 when we were done, the line was OUT THE DOOR! read more

Came here a few weeks ago on a Friday night a few hours before they closed. It was cold, but they had heaters on their patio and live music, so we decided to give it a try. My husband had one for their beers, and I had a margarita. Both were excellent, and made us hungry for some appetizers. We ordered their meatballs as well as their pretzels. The meatballs were pretty good, but their pretzels stole the show. I could sit there and eat pretzels all day. For my entree, I ordered salmon and my husband got steak. The salmon was delicious, but the side of pasta (I really couldn't tell what exactly it was) that it came with was cold and flavorless. My husband's steak was good and cooked perfectly. Our waitress was very kind and helpful, and we would probably try this place again when we are back in Fredericksburg. read more

This was one of the worst meals we've had and we all actually enjoy German food and we're looking forward to it. After having an hour wait (which was expected) the food took an hour and 15 minutes and arrived cold with small portions. The pretzel we received didn't match the images here and looked more like a ballpark pretzel. Our server didn't offer refills of drinks and he wasn't helpful at all during the extra long wait for food. The restaurant wasn't even busy during this time. Absolutely terrible experience. I ordered the Wurst Platte and it lived up to its name--dry, rubbery, and completely flavorless. Even the flies wouldn't touch it, which says more than any review could. We were dining with a real German friend who was genuinely embarrassed by the poor quality, calling it a disgrace to proper German cuisine. To top it off, the place was outrageously overpriced for what tasted like reheated cafeteria food. Save your money and your taste buds--this place is a hard pass. The service was nice, though, which is the only redeeming quality, our server was kind and friendly and obviously it wasn't her fault. If you're like me, when you're in Fredericksburg, you want German food and German beer and anything German really! There are a lot of great places to eat and drink in Fredericksburg, but I really appreciate Altdorf as a place for drinks. (We didn't eat when we visited earlier this month but only because we had reservations elsewhere.) When we arrived, we told them that we were just coming for drinks, so they invited us into a second building (behind the main dining building) near the back patio. (The back patio would be really fun to sit at when the weather is nice, but it was a little too chilly even for me on the day we visited. I bet it's popular in spring, summer, and fall though!) The second building is a small bar (you can eat here, too, and there were lots of families eating their meals here while we had a few beers). I wouldn't say the beer selection knocked my socks off, but the vibes were really nice (it felt old and charming and comfortable). We enjoyed a beer or two (maybe at Altstadt). If you're looking for a casual German meal or some beers, it's not a bad place to spend a few hours - even if the weather isn't coopering and you're inside! read more

Enjoyed an early dinner here with my other half on a surprisingly not very busy spring Friday evening. Seated immediately. Excellent German accented server. I really enjoyed my bargain-priced ($8) 23oz draft Alt beer from the local brewery (Altstadt). It was malty with caramel undertones. Tasty! Liked the massive German hot dog. This is a neat restaurant with indoor seating as well as seating in front of the building on a small patio and a larger outdoor area. We sat in the larger outdoor area, we lucked out with the weather being only 77 degrees in late July which is a sign to eat outside if there ever was a sign. We didn't have to wait long to get a table but we also went on a Thursday night, I would imagine the wait on the weekends are much longer. We tried a couple of appetizers. The warm German pretzel was really good. I dislike the regular American pretzel because it's usually dumped in a 1 lb of salt, this one was just salty enough. The German mustard was wonderful! The potato skins were also good. They were loaded with sausage and melted cheese and went quickly. For the main meal I went with the wienerschniztel which I really liked. I've had the dish quite a bit when I lived in Europe and this one tasted very similarly. It was nice and tender and had good flavor. As sides I tried the German potato salad which was awesome! It had a bit of mustard flavor so it don't like mustard it might not be for you. The spätzle was pretty good. I haven't had it before so not sure how authentic it is but I liked it. A pretty neat place with good service. There aren't many affordable restaurants in Fredericksburg but this one was pretty affordable compared to the other restaurants on Main Street. read more

My husband and I have been coming to Fredericksburg for years missing this restaurant each time. We put it on the list and had lunch outdoors with my 89-year-old mother. It was very pleasant nice shade, and as for the food, it's similar to all the other restaurants in town but enjoyed the atmosphere. Nice selection of good German Beers and enjoyed what we ate. Worse waiter ever was Miranda. I will never in my life return to this place. An experience with a waiter can make or brake a lace. All I asked for was water with no ice and she gave me hot water on purpose. She never asked if we needed anything. She gave us no side options with the food choices. The food was horrible. I've been here quite a few times. I enjoyed sitting on the patio Friday night and listening to music. If you have someone that isn't into German food, they'll be just fine. We started out with snickerdoodle shots, which were very good. We had the hackbraten - bacon wrapped meatloaf with spaetzle, mushroom gravy and broccolini. The meatloaf was pork & beef and very tasty. The spaetzle was good as was the broccolini. We also had the Sherman - smoked ham, baked turkey double decker sandwich. This was good as well, with the ham having a good smokey flavor. The service was prompt & cordial. Our only issue was that the Sherman came out with Jalapeno peppers on it when we requested to leave these off...we had to wait for another sandwich. Usually, restaurants will take something off the bill or throw in a dessert for the inconvenience...they didn't offer either. Tourist trap well-disguised by a charming historic building with porch seating, biergarten and nicely refurbished interior. Don't expect good service or a good deal, though. On our most recent visit we ordered a soft pretzel as an appetizer, remembering that we enjoyed it on a visit a couple of years ago. It might still be good, but we'll never know since our server never put in our order, even though we asked about it again when it didn't come out with our drinks. She also asked if we were ready for our check without offering dessert. There's a nice selection of German bottled and draft beers. I ordered a "32 oz" draft and was surprised when a much smaller glass was delivered. When I asked our server about it, she giggled and said it was a "typo" - it was really a 23 oz beer. She also confessed that the 64 oz beer was really a 46 oz beer. I guess she didn't feel the need to mention that when I ordered because most stupid tourists wouldn't know the difference. Wiener schnitzel with sauerkraut and spaetzle made a nice meal, but I can't say it was an outstanding value. I'm OK paying for ambience, but not OK with indifferent service or getting ripped off.
