Tiffany Skinner gave cut me the cutest bob on Thursday evening. This was my first time at Altered Ego and I thought I'd give it a try after reading the reviews on Yelp. She took the time to look at images on my iPhone when I googled "bobs for round faces". I make sure I have a picture to emulate since my face is round and I want that taken into consideration for a bob hair cut. I've attached photos of the cut. In Tempe for work. Needed touch up on my outgrown pixie cut. Called asked for appt asap with stylist thats good with Pixie. Got appt for sat 9am Appt with Nique. She is very sweet. I just showed her pics of what i like and dont like (from my pinterest board) gave her style freedom. I LOVE THE CUT/style. Its a little different than my normal. Bit change is good. I booked my first appointment with this Salon online nearly a week in advance and was left a message the night prior that they were unable to accommodate my appointment. The real crappy thing was that I did not see their message and I was sent a text that night confirming my appointment and asking me to text YES if I was going to be there. When I showed up and checked in I was in the lobby for 15 minutes before they let me know they did not have a stylist for me and I would have to reschedule for much later. The reason I made the appointment so far out in the first place was because I work evenings and needed an early morning appointment. Luckily Cloud 9 a few miles down the road was able to squeeze me in for an appointment on short notice and they were fantastic and have earned my repeat business :) read more

I've been going to Altered Ego for 5+ years now and cannot say enough good things about the place, especially Terri who does my color/cut each time. It's a great salon and Terri makes my hair look great. Ask for her! They are a full salon with tanning, nails and even a daycare for kids while the parent(s) get beautiful. They are attached to a coffee shop next door and so you can order a coffee and they'll even deliver it over to you at your hair station. Altered Ego has great staff and I recommend it! read more

I have to gush. Lynda gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had in my 60-plus years. I wear my hair in a bob, but the last person I went to (owner of a salon) just gave me a run-of-the mill, no-spark cut. I showed Lynda a picture of what I had in mind and she delivered beyond my expectations. It is bouncy and gorgeous and really easy to style. I'm so totally on board. Very cool place - so welcoming - and in the 'hood no less!!! I took a shot because I wanted spray tan and an edgier cut. Got both and left happy, bank account intact!! In a world where once upon a time, I paid Frederic Fekkai an INSANE amount of money to do a mediocre job on my hair. I was so pleased that Kenton not only listened but delivered a great cut - exactly what I wanted and I love it. And he's a peach - total sweetheart; although I gotta say, everyone I came in contact with here was very kind. Spray tan was discounted for me as a first timer there and it was done well. So sad, I've been crying for days over how bad my hair has become and how tawni, the owner is refusing to refund for an awful mistake. I've been coming here for years, I went in as blonde, asked for brown, the light brown shown below is a previous brown I had and would've wanted. I left with a very dark red brown, permanent. Called and went back to get it corrected, Carissa was the one who had no interest in correcting and made me feel like a nuisance turned it even worse, stripped my hair and put what seems to be an even worse color, ruining my hair. Went to get a color correction from someone new as I had experienced the same color twice as bad, she was even shocked at how bad my hair was, red, green and dark, and I had to pay $400 for a minimal difference since the color wasn't taking. Altered ego and the owner Tawni don't want to give me a refund because I went somewhere else to get it corrected... she doesn't allow pictures? Even though I came in to get it fixed once already wasting 5 hours of my time for an Even worse correction, I tried to get it corrected by altered ego and it came out worse! It's been a nightmare, they might have many clients but I only have one hair and them refusing to take responsibility and make this right is so so sad. I'm devastated truly as I didn't go to hair school I don't know the ins and outs, I trust them to and being told to just wait it out I can't get back to my blonde easily... this experience has been traumatizing read more

I was looking forward to a haircut here after all the great reviews. Guy at the desk was super polite and trying to make it right. I created this Yelp account for the specific purpose of writing this review. I have wanted short hair for several years now and every time I go to a stylist, they take one look at my very thick long hair and chubby face and ask if I'm really sure that's what I want. I always end up leaving disappointed because the stylist didn't trust me to know what I wanted. Not Chandra. She was amazing! I came in with a somewhat vague idea of what I wanted, short, fun, and textured and she jumped right in. She talked me through some options and then started cutting without ever second guessing me and I LOVE the result. I have to give a review to my nail tech, Brandy. She is ridiculously talented. I've never been one for getting my nails done; until Brandy. I've always hated the way acrylic made my nails feel. They're always so brittle once the nails come off, and every time I would get them done, my nails would hurt for a few days after. NOT with brandy. She uses all hard gel on me and doesn't file my nails down to paper thin before applying my gel. Hard gel is similar to the strength of acrylic. A lot of shops will claim to use hard gel or "powdered gel" which is just a cheap way to cut gel with powdered acrylic. Did I mention it's nice that I can understand her? And she doesn't hassle me with "I'll do that for you for 5 dollars more" my entire appointment. Although get used to booking ahead, her schedule fills up quickly because she's just that good! Before Brandy, I knew nothing about nails. She educated me and keeps my nails strong and beautiful. I'm very hard on my hands, and shellac would just peel off too quickly. She is seriously worth every single penny! She uses the best products and really cares about her clients and the health of their nails. Went in for a blow out for a friend's wedding. Angie was meticulous with my hair to make sure that it look just right, I was happy about it, and it held through the evening's festivities (I have fine hair and it usually falls out quickly). She also took the time to tell me what kind of products she was putting in my hair and what they would accomplish. I left the salon with glamorous curls that I know I could not have done on my own. I received so many compliments that evening and could not be happier, and the curls stayed all night! I have very curly natural hair and do all the curly girl things: 3b/c, no poo, no sulfates, parabens, etc. I came here after a salon in Gilbert (that shall not be named) fucked up my last Deva Cut. I found this place on Yelp because they had a Deva stylist and the reviews were good. When I made my appointment it was kind of far off, 3 weeks almost, but the receptionist asked if I wanted to be called in case of a cancellation. Luckily I got a call a couple of days later and came in. Terri was very knowledgeable and kept it real. We first talked about my hair, routine, questions, and concerns. If you have curly hair you know this is a good sign, in general, your stylist needs to know about you before going in. The cut itself was great, she added shape back into my hair. I told her I wanted a trim only with shaping but once we talked about it she let me know if I wanted to get rid of damage, like I said, I'd need more than a teensy trim. That's why I say she kept it real, I know she was right about that so we went with that option. I paid $65 for my cut, that's kind of a lot, right? Not so much for a Deva Cut, it takes time and preparation to understand curly hair and that's along the lines of what I've paid at other curly salons. All in all I loved it and will definitely be going back for my next cut!! read more

I am a long-time client of Altered Ego - at least 7-8 years. When I find a stylist I like, I stick with them. After my longtime stylist moved away, I left for a short time, but wanted to give Altered Ego a chance to pair me with another great stylist, who would receive all of my business. I received several emails in the past luring me to come back with 20% off coupons. Though now expired, I called to see if they would honor one, and Charissa agreed to do so. I came prepared, and had about a dozen pictures of a previous haircut I liked best. I stated, "I want an A line cut - longer in the front, a bit shorter in the back." She said, "Ok, and I'll keep your layers." I said, "I don't want layers." I also stated that I did not want my hair cut short. It was quite grown out by then, so she had plenty to work with. Against my request, she reinstated the layers, cut it way too short and the back is now definitely longer than the front. She even had the nerve when I pushed back about the A-line cut to say, "Oh, you wanted it even longer?" ??! My hair was so long and grown out, almost anything would have been an improvement. But Charissa gave me a haircut so ugly, none of my many female co-workers said anything to me - and they are the first to notice if anything at all changes about me, especially my hair. I can't do anything with this haircut. It's just horrible. She was even barely able to comply with my request to cut my bangs at an angle. She also completed the entire process in record time, indicating to me that she was sending the message: you get what you pay for. She had no interest in trying to keep me as a recurring client. I really didn't know what to think when I first saw it and since I had to leave for another appointment right after, what happened didn't really sink in until a few days later. It was also apparent that the salon had no interest in retaining my business as the person that checked me out did not ask when they could schedule me next. They were able to schedule me that day, with Shandra, who was wonderful and did a terrific job on my dry, wispy locks. She was able to put the idea of my hair that I had in my head into a lovely, healthy cut that I loved! And even smooth out my transitioning fringe. They have neat products available (I specifically loved the clever line of men's products .. thinking of my boyfriend...), and everyone is really friendly, and has great hair! I get my hair colored and cut by Mylisa and I get my extensions done by Terri! They are both amazing and know exactly what I want! I have very fine, thin hair and they know what will look good with my hair and what won't. Terri has been doing my extensions for almost two years now and she customizes them for my hair. Makes the bond smaller so they will lay very flat and so they won't be noticeable. They look very natural! No one knows they are extensions and are very shocked when I tell them that they are! I've been going to Kent for several years now and have followed him to this salon. He is amazing and 100% worth the 45min drive! He's an incredibly talented colorist with tons of experience. I most recently decided to get a Brazilian blowout and I couldn't be happier with it! My hair got super damaged from my new medication, and the blowout was just what I needed to get it super soft and healthy again (see pics). Really strange experience here. I had the most amazing hairdresser move to Ohio so I had to start at square one and find a new stylist. I looked at reviews everywhere and stumbled across this place. I have very hard to work with hair and let the girl know that I needed the best person they had. She scheduled me with Matthew who is apparently a stylist for the stars.....all men. I went in with my 2 day hair but it was straight and styled so I could show him the shape I want, just shorter and thinned out. He didn't wash it, and I'm pretty sure didn't cut it, and since it was pre-styled he didn't do that either. The conversation was painful, all he was interested in was dropping names and talking about New York and LA and his "artist" friends. When I walked in it was like wading through a sea of horrible, outdated perms and super short spikey cuts for women. I wanted to run but kept my cool and stayed. He MAYBE took 1/4" off my hair at best and didn't follow the lines I explained to him. In a nutshell- Didn't get a wash, barely a cut, poor conversation and no style for $56. I walked out with the same 2 day hair as I walked in with but $56 in the hole. Maybe he only cares about men's hair but this place isn't worth the money. read more

My review is about tape in hair extensions experience. First front desk/scheduling and check out is a mess. Disorganized and they managed to overcharge my credit card by 500$! Now the hair extensions themselves, granted I had short (shoulder length hair to start with so it can be tricky) but I did wait a month for an appointment with an experienced stylist for this and it end result is rather dissapoiting. The hair recommended itself is stiff and coarse, not like the sample they had before ordering. The installation was rushed and the stylist didn't seem to care about the look and comfort of end result. She didn't bother to trim pieces for more comfortable/flexible fit around the base of the head and crown. The blending haircut was rushed and I was left with the hair that didn't blend well. She could even run the flat iron through the hair to smooth it down after I spent a significant amount of money to make it look decent even before I left the place. To top it off when I contacted her for a fix, she wasn't I'm a rush to make it better and dumped me off to an assistant to deal with it. The stylist seemed more offended by me not being impressed by the shoddy job then eager to make things right. Bottom line- take your money elsewhere where the stylist actually stand by and care about their work. read more

Fabulous experience at Altered Ego. Tawni was right on time which is always a nice thing at bustling salons. The girl that washed my hair (sorry forgot her name) was wonderful. She gave my scalp a great massage and I wanted to stay in that relaxing shampoo bowl forever! I asked for a lOB, long bob and that is exactly what I got.
