    Al Ala Paella
    Kari B.

Service here was great, 5 stars! Loved the cocktails as well, 5 stars! The food was ok, 3 stars, nothing knocked it out of the park for me. The servings for tapas as decent size. We had all tapas- salmon, paella, barbacoa. My favorite was the salmon dish. The place has a very nice atmosphere. The location in Plainfield is off the beaten path.

    Kids Chicken Quesadilla

Came here for the first time and really enjoyed it. Definitely more of a date night or girls night. Really enjoyed my tacos Al Chilango. The fires threw me off a bit but was good. My husband got Al Alembre, he said he liked mine better but his was ok. Kids got the chicken quesadillas and loved it. We also got ala papa bravas and that was my favorite!!!! The prices were a bit high but as expected now days. Server was super nice and very attentive.

What a great experience! We weren't expecting the direction provided by our server Norma. We got there soon after opening and she let us know the favorites and what was on special. Thankfully for National Tequila Day their ladies margarita deal was available. Buy one margarita at full price, your second margarita is 1/2 price. Additionally, they ran happy hour specials M-F, 4:00-5:00. Great meal, great service and a cute atmosphere. The bar is so inviting to just get a quick drink and bite to eat.

    Sangrona
    Rosann R.

We have gone for brunch and dinner and the food is absolutely delicious. My go to drink is the Sangrona which is muddled strawberries with tequila, orange juice and lime. For dinner, I typically order Al Alambre. It's steak and chorizo with peppers onions and cheese. Served with tortillas and a yummy green salsa. Go for brunch and order the Altiro Breakfast. It is a tortilla topped with potatoes, chorizo, perfectly scrambled eggs, avocado, sour cream and (crazy as it sounds) Ketchup. It is the most delicious combination. It is also served with orange juice and a cup of coffee. Now, I am not a coffee drinker but, this coffee has a nice cinnamon flavor and I absolutely enjoy it. Service is always excellent. Marco waits on us often and he is friendly and efficient. The restaurant is beautifully decorated throughout and there is no shortage of seating. They have a large bar area with multiple tv's to enjoy a drink and a quick bite. I know there have been complaints about the prices. The thing is, you get what you pay for. If you want Taco Bell prices, go to Taco Bell. My husband's breakfast this morning included 4 eggs and the cost was only $10! Considering the cost of groceries these days, that's a darn good price. The highest price meal on the menu is $25. Compared to other restaurants in that area, they aren't the highest overall priced restaurant. Overall, this place is fantastic and I hope others will give it a try and realize what a gem this place really is.

Hard rubber chicken and tasteless potatoes

Don't come here, if you're hungry, TINY portions, expensive food and drinks with poor execution. Food is tapas style, but you can't share with more than 1 person. We had Al Camaleon which was good flavor but only had 4 bite sized tacos, Al Limón chicken, was so bad, we had to send it back to the kitchen, it was hard and rubber like, no flavor and the potatoes didn't have any season, not even salt. The Ala Paella was the best dish, but still lacked the execution. The tuna was over cooked, hard and dry. The Ala Barbacoa was decent, but I've had better at other restaurants for less. The last two dishes would be better as a meal for one person, who isnt very hungry. They are trying to act like a Michelin star restaurant, with the small portions, but they just lack the execution. This place is an over priced Mexican restaurant with zero fusion.

    Guacamole appetizer

Restaurant was culturally decorated nice. Service was great. The guacamole appetizer was alright nothing to brag about. The chorizo burrito wasn't that great. The enchiladas were good however.

Overall we don't plan to return to this restaurant. The restaurant is nice in the inside, and is a cute hangout. However, it is quite hidden compared to the rest of downtown. The cocktails were the biggest miss for us, they fell a bit flat and the purée used was very chunky. We like the quac trio, and the steak tacos were great. The pork belly tacos were nothing special. Dessert was just ok. Service was quite slow, and that was what deterred us the most. There were only two servers and the restaurant was fairly filled.

Service was exceptional. Food was acceptable. Cocktails are overpriced, especially for the suburbs.

My hubby ordered a chicken sandwich that was just as good.. All of our food was very tasty and we really enjoyed it. Portions are generous so hopefully you're very hungry or be prepared to bring plenty home. I was only able to eat half of my food and brought the other half home and my sandwich seemed better the next day which isn't always the case when you bring things home!! Dark beadboard walls, copper ceiling tiles, round orb lighting, and upstairs a cavernous space with soaring ceilings anchored by a stunning skylight. It is genuinely one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the area. Date night approved. One gripe before we get to the good stuff: if you have pages and pages of creative cocktails and an extensive wine list, your two mocktail options deserve the same love. We don't drink and the options were fine but very sour and clearly an afterthought. Do better for the sober and sober curious crowd. Now the food. The burrata was creamy, rich, and gorgeous sitting in olive oil topped with chimichurri and grilled bread. Needed more balsamic to bring the acid balance home, but honestly still one of the better burratas I've had locally. The stuffed pork with gouda, chimichurri, and saffron potato wedges was a genuinely smart plate. The saffron wedges were a surprise standout, bringing a clean earthiness that cut through the richness beautifully. A touch heavy on the gouda and the whole dish woke up considerably with a little extra salt, but the bones of it are excellent. The churrasco hanger steak told the same story. Well cooked, flavorful, chimichurri doing its job. The curly fries were the one shrug of the night. Not bad, just boring next to everything else on offer. Mike our server closed the deal by steering us toward the caramel skillet cookie and honestly, bless him for it. Warm, salty, sweet, rich, topped with cold vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. It is everything a skillet cookie should be and we scraped the pan. We are already planning the return visit and bringing friends. Barrel & Vine is an unexpected dining experience that Plainfield is lucky to have.

O.M.B. (ONE MAGNIFICENT BURGER)…read more Their name doesn't say it, but Next Whiskey Bar serves an incredible burger. I know my way around a sandwich, and I have to say the offerings at NWB in downtown Plainfield are some of the best around. Look for the blue & white house on Lockport St, and you'll know you've found it. NWB doesn't take reservations, however you can join an online waitlist. Park on the street or in a small lot adjacent to the building. The beer selection is fantastic, a pint ($8) never disappoints although I usually lean towards a Hefeweizen or pilsner with my meal. Yeah yeah, I know this is a WHISKEY bar, but yours truly doesn't do the brown liquor.....bad experience with Jägermeister as a kid. For appetizers, the cheese curds ($14) are pricey but oh-so-worth it. They come with a cilantro aioli and we get an order of these every single visit. The cauliflower popcorn ($11) is also a very worthy choice for starters; roasted and seasoned cauliflower florets are served with a sumptuous clarified butter. Their house NWB Burger ($16.50) is a busy affair, with pork belly, bbq sauce, onion straws and cheese curds on a pretzel bun. The Big Jer ($15.25) is a much simpler yet equally stellar burger with 2x4oz patties, lettuce, tomato, and Merkt's cheddar spread served with a pickle spear. I recently tried the Suribachi ($15.50) and it blew my mind. A 1/2lb patty is lightly fried in tempura batter, then topped with pepperjack cheese, wasabi coleslaw and sriracha on a brioche bun. Next time, I'm giving the El Toro a shot (pickled habaneros, corn guac). My wife loves the pork belly mac ($16), a good portion of cheesy cavatappi pasta with crispy pork belly. Their Cubano ($15) is solid and the Taylor Street panini ($15) is a tasty Italian grinder, with prosciutto, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato and olive spread on focaccia bread. NWB's homemade chips are amazing, I always opt for them instead of fries (which are also great). Bread = 5+ Circuses = 4.5 Service has been generally fine, but last visit it took a long time for our server to come by initially. The inside of this converted house is somewhat cramped so if the weather allows, I suggest dining 'al fresco'. Their outdoor patio definitely passes the vibe check. I honestly can't decide whose doughnuts are better, Empire in Naperville or Next Whiskey Bar's. It might be a tie! In any case, we ALWAYS end a meal here with the fried doughnuts ($11) that come with a heavenly whiskey caramel sauce for dipping. * TL;DR * In my mind, NWB stands for "Nirvana, With Burgers". Everything we've gotten here has exceeded expectations. Cheese curds, cauliflower popcorn, pork belly pasta, doughnuts and of course burgers all stand out. I would get the Suribachi again in a HEARTBEAT. The ambiance is ideal for date night and small groups, and with a small dining area that fills up fast, come early or expect a wait. Next Whiskey Bar is one of my favorite restaurants in the western suburbs, I highly recommend them.

DOPPELBOCK 'N ROLL…read more This suburban brewery taps a solid, headbanging beer. I've always felt that a cold draft hits differently than a can or bottle. When the mood strikes me, I'll venture over to Garage Band Brewing on Des Plaines St in downtown Plainfield, next door to Station One Smokehouse (with whom they share a symbiotic relationship). Their brews have hard rock-inspired names, like 'Stout It Out Loud' (a play on the KISS song), 'Hop Shaped Box' (Alice in Chains), and 'Hybrid Th30ry' (a 30 IBU pale ale with a nod to Linkin Park). Last time here, I got 12oz of the 'Don't Harsh My Mellow' for $6. I dig the packaging wrap on their 16oz cans of Dizzy Up the Blonde; a Marilyn Monroe-esque lady sitting on a 55gal drum, suggestively tugging on her red high heel with one hand and holding a chalice of beer in the other. What's not to like there? They have a trio of pinball tables that get sporadically rotated out. Previously they had Foo Fighters and Star Wars, now they've got Stranger Things, JAWS, and a gorgeous Godzilla premium model at $1 per play. There's a digital jukebox too, if you wanna pick tunes for the venue. * TL;DR * I lack the time and expertise to brew my own beer, so I'm happy to leave it to the pros. Garage Band is a small operation with big dreams, and they already have a handful of solid brews in circulation. I check back every few months to see their new seasonal drafts, like a shandy in the summer and darker Oktoberfest-style beer in the fall. They're closed Mon-Tues. Beer and pinball are significant passions of mine, and since Garage Band has a nice selection of both, they get an easy 5*.
