(4/5) Altruda's - Knoxville, TN Driving down from Northern Virginia to Nashville (over a 10-hour trip!), we stopped in Knoxville for the night and decided to try Altruda's. This was on October 24, the day before my Nashville Half Marathon, so I wanted a solid pre-race carb meal -- and Altruda's absolutely delivered. We started with the Tortellini Tricolore -- delicious, creamy, and rich. I had to stop myself after five or six pieces to save room. For mains, I ordered the Spaghetti Marinara (keeping it vegetarian before race day), and my friend had the Rigatoni Anthony with ham. Both entrées came with Altruda's famous house salad -- they brought us a large shared bowl with garlic bread on the side, and even offered free refills. The salad was fresh and full of flavor -- crisp romaine, earthy beets, mushrooms, and a light, tangy dressing. The spaghetti itself was fairly simple -- not mind-blowing, but exactly what I needed before a race: light, tomato-based, and not greasy or heavy. The Rigatoni Anthony was richer and creamier -- a bit much for me that night, but it tasted great. The ambiance is warm and rustic, with that classic old-school Italian vibe. Service was friendly and efficient even late at night. Overall, it was exactly the kind of comforting, hearty meal I wanted before race day. I ended up finishing first in my age group at the half marathon the next day -- maybe a little Altruda's magic helped. I'd gladly stop by again the next time I'm in Knoxville or passing through Tennessee.

This place is incredible!!! The ambiance is amazing- we felt like we were eating in an Italian library. Our server was very friendly and helpful. The salad had lots of fixings (but is iceburg lettuce which is not my personal favorite) and the garlic rolls are COVERED in garlic (super yummy). I had the Pollo Dill- I have never seen a dill pasta dish and I love dill. It was unique and very good. We also had the sausage stuffed mushrooms and Pasta e Fagioli which was very good.

The food was very good , we got the lasagna and a chicken parm, we also got the appetizer sampler which we could have done without, it was just ok. But the lasagna is worth going back for. The bread is nice because it's covered in butter and garlic. I loved how the restaurant is broken up into smaller dining areas. And the service was top notch.

Good food, great ambiance. Came here for dinner last night looking for something tasty and filling. Altruda, hit the spot perfectly. We came around 7:30 on a Thursday night the restaurant was busy, but not super packed. We were lead to a room in the back and given the menu. Our server greeted us with waters and asked if we wanted anything else to drink. She answered our questions and gave really good suggestions. I took her suggestion of the Pollo ala Melanzane with marinara sauce instead of the meat sauce. My husband got the Snapper ala Limone. While you are waiting for the main dishes you get a salad and garlic rolls. The rolls were hot, garlicky and delicious. The salad was lightly dressed and fresh. Our main dishes were really good. I loved mine. The flavors were great and it was nice and cheesy. The snapper was light and flaky. Both were served with noodles. Everything we had was really good. I definitely want to come back and try more things. The service and the food make this place great.

Food was great, as always! We sat at the bar so we could watch the Vols game and the service was fantastic! Always refilling waters and checking in. Ambiance is homey and would come here time and time again.

We gathered for a family dinner tonight at Altrudas. FYI, they will not take reservations for less than six. The indoor decor is nice. All the servers were dressed in black which was classy. The dining rooms (I think there about six) had tables squeezed in tightly. It was noisy so it was difficult to hear conversations at our table. The food was reasonably priced but not outstanding. It was flavorful but not the best I've tasted in Knoxville. A three star review is average which is a fair assessment on this evening's visit. Our server was pleasant, but we felt rushed. She handed out to-go boxes while I was still eating. After she handed out the to-go boxes, she asked if we wanted dessert (check in hand) and readily handed it to us when we declined.

We had high hopes for dinner here based on the reviews but sadly we were disappointed. First the good - our server was helpful, pleasant, and our glasses were never empty. The salad was very good - dressing was spot on. Now - everything else. Garlic rolls were just plain thick rolls covered in butter and garlic. No flavor and way too greasy. The lasagna had potential but they use ground beef with no flavor and thick store bought style noodles. The best thing about it was the cheese on top. The fettuccine Alfredo with chicken was worse than store bought Alfredo sauce. The chicken wasn't freshly made it was cold chunks heated up and the noodles were egg noodles. Egg noodles??? It was gritty and had zero flavor - you couldn't taste garlic or anything. And to top it off the bowl of egg noodles was $28! The tiramisu horrible as well. It was thick and custard like and again no flavor. We really did want to like this place - being new to the Knoxville area we were searching for a great Italian restaurant. This was not it. It was overpriced and a let down.

We started with the Artichoke Fritti which were kind of like artichoke hush puppies. We shared a delicious charred Romaine which was a satisfying Caesar. But they got Buccatini. Woohoo! Beet salad - we are a fan beets anything so it was good. Brussels sprouts- flavor was good but overcooked and mushy. PEI mussel - was really good. Highly recommended Pulpo (grilled octopus) - a tad overcooked but not too bad. Focaccia bread w/ Ricotta cheese - yummy. The only sad part was when our waiter took the Ricotta away before we can scraped off every little bit of cheese from the container without us realizing it. Pasta carbonara- barely any pancetta but yummy. Pasta bolognese- I am not a fan of bolognese. Gnocchi- soft and fluffy pillows but sauce is alright. Desserts: Pistachio gelato- homemade and delicious Tiramisu- ok but I personally prefer ones with more espresso and alcohol.

For the appetizers, I really liked the presentation of the focaccia bread with a table-side drizzle of olive oil and with a pesto, goat cheese, and a bulb of cooked garlic. We also enjoyed the arancini, which is basically fried risotto. I didn't like my main as much. I had the mushroom rigatoni. As I'm not a vegetarian I had to try a side of meatballs which I did enjoy. While I really enjoyed the nuttiness from the toasted hazelnuts, the mushrooms were very chewy, almost as if they'd been rehydrated, and a lot of the pasta was pretty dried out. Needed more sauce for the rigatoni. I can see how the dish can satisfy a vegetarian option but it would also be perfect with grilled chicken. I took a bite of the creamy Tuscan shrimp and thought the shrimp was perfectly cooked and very creamy. And the pork chop with polenta had an interesting sweetness to it. While I wouldn't order my entree again, the service plus the other dishes makes them a 5 for me. You Bella believe I'll be back!
