I'm adding an update that I won't be returning to Alteration Specialists. I was a customer a year ago, and I rarely need alteration services. Now that I need services again, my instinct is to definitely go somewhere else. There wasn't much pricing transparency and it felt like they were pushing extra services for an extra price that were not needed. Given how much I spent, I expected the alterations to be perfect, and they weren't. The staps were a bit loose on the dress I had altered. The tailoring was overall high quality, but it is not worth the price. read more

best thing you can say about this place is they're really fast. worst thing is I think they scammed me. 2 days after they altered it my suit no longer fit, and they blamed it on my body changing. This is my fourth time using Alts Specialists. They have never disappointed in the quality of their work. Admittedly not inexpensive, I keep going back when I need to trust that the work will be done right. Not who I use for everyday hems (likes jeans or warmup pants), but to actually do alterations, they are my go-to place. Ridiculously overpriced and there doesn't seem to be any oversight to what the tailors are charging customers. I had 2 pants altered, and was charged over $100 for less than 3 inches removed. The tailor assigned to me used a category and pricing that was not applicable- indicating that I was taking more length off than was actual, and also charged a rate that is supposedly higher for women than men which I don't understand why women's alterations on PANTS would be more expensive than a man's. read more

I went to Alts to have a lining sewn into a very sheer nightgown that was part of my getting ready wardrobe for my wedding. It's a vintage nightgown with very delicate fabric so I wanted only the best to help me with my alteration. I'd heard great things about Alts through friends and on social media, so I knew it'd be the best place to go. My consultation took less than 30 minutes where I was given options so I had flexibility in cost, and the tailor I worked with listened to all my concerns. When I got the garment back, I was so happy. The fabric of the lining matched my skin tone so well and you could barely tell there was a lining in place when I put it on. I went to Alts to get a bridesmaid dress altered. Due to time constraints, I had to order a dress last minute and as a result, I had to have a poorly made, mass-produced dress basically taken apart and put back together just so that it would fit me properly. While that led to the services being more expensive than I anticipated for the amount of working being done, I fortunately was able to walk away with a dress that was tailored to me and fit like a glove. So, while on the more expensive side, the work was incredibly well done and service was incredible. read more

I had a great experience at the new Alteration Specialists at the UWS. I was welcomed with water and a clean, well designed dressing room environment. Tatiana was very efficient and figured out how to alter my blouse for my pregnancy. They even keep a few pairs of heels in case you forget yours (which I did )! Wouldn't trust any of my special clothes with another tailor. I am very petite and most clothes are too big for me. If I have a special item that needs major work done I only trust Alts. They are very nice and Altina has a very good eye for altering an item so that it flatters you. Tatjana the tailor did an excellent job on a few items, all tailored to fit me perfectly. Don't just go to any tailor if you have a special item that needs expert tailoring. read more

Brides- DO NOT GO HERE. This location nearly destroyed my wedding dress. The incompetence and carelessness of the team here was truly appalling, not to mention the lack of responsiveness from management. I should have fled after my first appointment when Homa stepped on my very delicate lace train multiple times (I had to politely ask her to please not walk on my dress with her shoes to get her to even notice how careless she was being). At my second appointment, even though 2 months had gone by, barely any work had been done on it, and the dress looked disturbingly like it wasn't being carefully handled at all. At my third appointment-- supposedly the "final pickup" -- my dress looked awful. There was massive gaping under the arms, the straps were not fit to my body and were hanging off my back on the sides, and the entire dress was sitting crooked and was an inch off-center to my body. Everyone kept telling me how "beautiful" it looked, and that it was perfect and done, and when I would point out the glaring and specific issues they would say it was because of the dress or blame my body (!) for the issues. The dress also looked like it had been completely manhandled - the appliques on the bodice were fuzzy and roughed up, there were strings coming out of it everywhere, and the beading on one of my straps was stripped bare. I left and immediately asked that they stop all work on the dress and transfer it to Marva at the UES location. It took days for someone from management to actually respond to me, and even then I still had to follow up again to get them to transfer the dress, even though I was only 3 weeks out from my wedding and it was an urgent matter. Thankfully Marva at the Upper East Side location was able to salvage the shape of the dress so it was wearable, but unfortunately at my actual wedding I had issues with my dress all night. One of the cups kept popping out, my right strap kept falling down, my bustle kept coming out, and the same right strap that the UWS had destroyed the beading on completely broke during my reception so I couldn't even keep the dress up. I cannot fathom the good reviews of this place - if they handle a wedding gown so carelessly I shudder to think of their work on more every day items. When I was in there for one of my initial fittings, another customer was livid over expensive pants of his they had ruined, so I know my experience is not unique. I have been dismayed by my experience with the company overall. It took weeks for someone to actually call me on the phone to address my experience (and this only happened after I requested a refund), and that phone call started with an attempt to completely downplay and gaslight my experience. I paid nearly $1,000 for these alterations. I expected at a minimum that my dress would be tailored well to my body, and that it would be handled carefully enough to last through the night the one day of my life I was going to wear it. I followed up with the company again after my wedding telling them the dress broke, and it took weeks and me following up multiple times to even get a response, which was essentially that they have a "no refund policy," and that the only way they'd consider a full refund is if I took my google review down (which they then walked back on). They seem much more concerned with collecting exorbitant amounts of money from people rather than making sure they provide the quality work and positive customer experiences that the cost they charge should warrant. read more
