The food was fantastic, but the service left something to be desired. There only appeared to be one waiter covering four tables. It took us almost 20 minutes for him to come to us and take our drink orders. Our food took almost an hour to arrive. When we asked to split the bill, he just wrote down our individual totals on the check but no indication of who owed what. I don't know if this is what their wait staff is usually like, but we were not impressed. For the price, there's better places to get Polish food in Metro-Detroit with much better service. read more

I went here for dinner on a Friday night Ambiance: The decor is spectacular. There are many dolls and trinkets from various European countries (I couldn't identify where). Seating is small and cozy. I'm generally not a European flavors type of person though so it could be that. The cutlet was ridiculously difficult to cut for some reason.. it wasn't dry. If I went back, I would get the kielbasa plate. Napoleon dessert: to die for. And only $7. Great portion. I really loved how there were 2 kinds of puffs. A chocolate drizzle version and a fruit cream version. Amadeus has so much old world charm. I love walking in here and feeling transported to a different place and time. The dill pickle soup was delicious and I wanted to drink it by the gallon. The kielbasa was perfectly grilled. We also got crispy potato pancakes and the krakow chicken which was so tender and served on delicious caramelized cabbage. We ducked into Amadeus on a Saturday night 40 minutes before they closed, and had a very nice experience. The waitress was helpful and friendly. The restaurant decor is gorgeous! Such a gem in A2 :) We ordered a few cups of Ogurkowa soup which was fantastic. If you are a fan of pickles you'll love it. We also ordered the Krakow chicken which was made well but I probably would get something more interesting next time. Aw man... What a disappointment! I went with a group of 12. We were all famished and really excited to order. Well, it took 15 minutes for the server to come get our drinnk orders. It took an additional 15 minutes for the server to get our bottle of wine, 2 soft drinks, and 5 cocktails. It took another 30 minutes before the server came to take our dinner orders. At this point, I decided to hold my questions about the menu and just order something. At this time, we had indicated that we would like 6 separate checks. It then took 45 minutes for our food to come. Hungarian potato pancakes were good but not remarkable enough for me to want to go back. I tried someone's pierogis- the mushroom pierogis were good but after trying the pork ones, I actually had to excuse myself to go to the bathroom. We decided to forgo dessert since we had been at this restaurant for over 2.5 hours. We asked for the check- which came 30 minutes later. It was a 3.5-foot long narrow paper with just prices on it. No descriptions. No names. Just numbers. All in one check. for 12 people. The server said that she couldn't help us figure it out because she was busy. She handed our table their menu so we can figure out how much we owe. We calculated everything out with tip & tax, but the bill was still $35 over what we had ordered. Walking by, the restaurant looks like an antique where old central European folks would come. But walk inside past the velvet curtains and it's truly beautiful. Yes there are chachkies on the walls but the restaurant is very well put together. Atop the piano are Szopka's (Nativity scenes made from candy wrappers) and if you let your eye wander farther, you'll notice the beautiful homemade desserts in a case. The restaurant plays beautiful Viennese music (mostly Strauss) so it makes for a nice, comfortable atmosphere. -Complimentary Rolls: mmm these come out hot and accompanied by a wonderful apricot jam and butter. The rolls themselves are quite plain so the butter and jam add quite a bit. The apricot jam is quite sweet but well flavored. Sunday Brunch -Polish Breakfast (scrambled eggs with scallions, kielbasa, 2 potato pancakes, garden salad): The scrambled eggs have plenty of scallions throughout which take away from the egg taste but give a completely new one. The kielbasa: heavenly. It's perfectly grilled and bursting with a mildly spicy flavor. The potato pancakes are well cooked and have a wonderful consistency but lack in flavor. The dressing for the salad is light, garlicky and airy--very much like a ranch. Everything besides the kielbasa is a bit bland though. If you add the rolls to the dish, however, not only do you taste the scrambled eggs and potato pancakes more, but the bread flavor pops out. Desserts -Carmel Apple Cheesecake: the cheesecake is the perfect consistency--creamy and compact, very much like JR's. It's plain cheesecake with apples atop. With the layer of apples on top it tastes a bit like apple strudel. The crust is more of a pie crust with a hint of graham cracker. The whipped cream is quite sweet. The caramel sauce is lovely and light. DELICIOUS! -Sacher Torte (chocolate cake glazed with apricot preserves & chocolate ganache): Wow. This sacher torte is not your average dry one by any means. The chocolate cake is dense, moist and full of flavor (the chef imports the dark chocolate from Europe). The apricot glaze adds a nice contrast to the richness of the cake. FINAL VERDICT: I found the main entrée to be a bit bland, but the desserts are delicious. I think this may be my go-to for coffee and cake instead of for a meal. read more

Beautiful presentation and tasty lunch. Perfect lunch portions too. Not a good place for a picky eater but very good if you are looking for a change of pace from the normal downtown. Doesn't Disappoint for Restaurant Week 2013. I ventured to the middle of Europe with a friend for Restaurant Week (Jan. 2013) and really enjoyed myself. Dishes of Note: The Dill Pickle Soup is not salty, but a delicious and mouth watering tease before your main meal. The salads come with their home-made buttermilk ranch. Yea, no need to say more. The Dumplings (in anything) are delicious. Favorite part of the Bitki with Kopytka. But the real treat is dessert. For about $7 you can get sweet, savory, rich, creamy, bitter, or strong! We had the Raspberry Passion Fruit Mousse (6/5) and an off menu brownie, fudge- layered with white/dark chocolate cake that was also fantastic (5/5). And to top it all off, I had THE BEST waitress imaginable. So why not 5 stars? Price. Everything (but the dessert) is quite pricy. If not for the $28 deal, I probably would have paid $45 (without tip). Not the most affordable. But I will be back to treat someone to dessert in Europe without leaving Ann Arbor. read more

I came to Amadeus with a large group and I have to say that they did a pretty good job accommodating us. The ambiance is great with unique decor and lovely vines hanging from the rafters. The red curtains give it a romantic vibe. I'm mostly disappointed with the experience because of the food portions. I ordered the vegetarian plate ($12) and it was a small spring salad, a scoop of potato salad, one pierogi, and one potato pancake (and lots of sour cream). For me, one pierogi and one small potato pancake with some salad isn't enough food for a meal. Other people's lunches also looked like they were comprised of tiny portions. I've lived in Ann Arbor for almost my whole life, and this restaurant has probably been here just as long. Because I'm vegetarian, I think I wrote it off as a place that wouldn't be accommodating just because it's Eastern European food. I ate here for the first time tonight though, and WOW. The ambiance is very intimate, really cozy. Dress isn't so fancy you feel self conscious, but you could have fun and dress up to go here if you wanted. The lighting was soft, and they had an incredibly talented classical guitarist playing. (I wanted to ask him for lessons)! Our waitress was also very kind. :) They start by giving you a fresh salad with ranch as well as a roll with butter. This was delicious in itself, being very simple yet flavorful. I had the vegetarian plate, which was a perfect variety of my favorite foods: Pierogis, potato salad, and a potato schnitzel. It was absolutely amazing. I had the pierogi with potato and farmer's cheese, and sour cream was on the side. Never in my life have I had a better pierogi. The potato schnitzel was delicious. The side of cream sauce for dipping was beautiful, too. It's inspired me to use more dill in my cooking from now on. The potato salad was one of the best I've had, as well. It was very creamy, but packed so much flavor. The plate had more greens and cucumbers in addition to some pickles on the side. I was initially worried that dinner here would be very heavy, but with plenty of greens, it ended up being very nice as well as substantial. It was like extra flavorful comfort food. My partner also really loved his meal, the Polish Plate. He especially enjoyed the stuffed cabbage. We had a Main Street Area Association gift card which made this place attainable for us. Otherwise, dinner is a bit pricey. (The vegetarian plate is $20). Their lunch menu is definitely affordable though! A friend recommended the brunch here, so my bf & I decided to check it out on a Sunday morning before heading back to Seattle. I am a European mutt, part Ukrainian and Polish (among other things), so I was already familiar with a lot of the menu - stuff grandma used to make! But I've never been to a restaurant that specializes in Eastern European cuisine beyond typical Jewish deli fare, so this was a really fun break from your standard Sunday brunch offerings. The atmosphere is charming and cozy, and we were sat at a nice table in one of the front windows. We were there with another couple, and we all cleaned our plates. I got the pierogi breakfast, which comes with 3 pierogis of your choosing. I chose the farmer's cheese, mushroom, and sauerkraut. I haven't had pierogis in a long time, so it was quite a treat! They were kind of lukewarm when they got to me, but I was starving and super excited about pierogis, so it wasn't that big a deal. We had a nice time here, and service was good. The pirogi lunch came with three pirogies and the golabek had one cabbage roll. The pierogies were very good, but I thought the cabbage roll sauce was a bit bland. For some people the amount of food is a perfect amount for lunch and for others they would leave hungry. For us, it meant we had room to share the delicious Sacher Torte which was better than the Sacher Torte at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. Love the decor and vibe here. My experience reflects a previous reviewer who had very slow service on a Sunday for brunch. Ours was not that bad, but we definitely waited for each step of our meal. When the waiter finally arrived with menus, he said "flying solo today." While he did quite a good job overall, I do not feel that this inspires confidence in the establishment. Four of us had a really great meal overall. However, I was disappointed in my Budapest breakfast. The chicken paprikash was ok, but some flavor (in the potato pancakes perhaps?) was just off for me. Too strong and distracted me from what should have been a delicious dish. We all shared a sampler of Polish dumplings (pierogi) for appetizer, and they were delicious. (The potato one was bland though.) Also, the golabek (rice and pork-stuffed cabbage roll) was to die for. Very generous portions. Mimosas were wonderful. I have been a customer of Amadeus for as long as I can remember. The people were always good . I even supported them when Covid was a problem. I generally ordered at least once a week, but I won't be ordering with them anymore. I ordered a mushroom pizza last night for the Eagles game around 8pm. I usually pick up the food but last night because of the game I asked for delivery. The pizza arrived at 9pm. I tip very well for a single pizza with mushrooms four blocks away. After I paid cash for the pizza and the guy left and it ended up being a medium with sausage pizza. I tried to call but they close at 9pm and no one picked up. I believed that they held the pizza till close and then delivered it. I called the next day and they basically called me a liar about the order saying they had no record of the pizza. Considering the female person who sounded weird and the driver who delivered the order I'm wondering if the even placed the order because it was a straight cash deal. I have the box my cell phone record. I won't purchase with them again. The people I knew who ran that place wouldn't have said that. I will tell my neighbors and friends not to buy food there. read more

Somewhere in Vienna, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is rolling over in his grave. Wow, was I disappointed with my choice to have brunch here a few weeks ago. I had so looked forward to trying Amadeus for awhile and had high expectations for a lovely meal. Indeed, just judging by exterior appearances, it seemed to have all the makings of a terrific little cafe. Well, I was clearly wrong and left bitterly disappointed by the experience. I had been looking forward to dining at Amadeus for some time before finally having brunch here last month. I had bookmarked this spot months earlier and thought it looked so charming just from the exterior and the online menu. I had even peeked inside a time or two. I had basically disregarded some of the less than stellar online reviews for this place and figured I'd make up my own mind about it. In retrospect, I can see where some of these reviews were coming from. I stopped in for Sunday brunch with pretty high expectations that began falling flat almost immediately. The place was not crowded and had just opened a few minutes prior to my arrival. After joining a friend and her family at a large table near the kitchen (they had arrived a moment before I did), we were largely ignored for about an hour. The entire table shared a menu for quite awhile while the wait staff seemed in a fog, never bringing drinks, additional menus or checking on guests at any of the tables. We sat there for about a half an hour before getting extra menus for our table and glasses of water. The whole time we sat there, the wait staff acted like we weren't there, but it was largely the same situation with every single table. After about 45 minutes, we managed to get a server (not sure which one or if it was even our specific server) to take our order. When she asked if we wanted to order and we replied, "yes," she actually sighed and rolled her eyes. Wow. I settled on the Pierogi Breakfast (vegetarian) with an order of Viennese Coffee, as did a few others at our table. Our brunches came with unlimited baskets of rolls/bread with assorted jellies. That was a joke. Another server dropped one tiny basket for the five of us and it was never refilled. That amounted to exactly one roll per person. We were starving. That was hardly satisfying, but it was better than no rolls at all. The rolls were okay, but tasted store-bought. They were clearly not freshly baked on site. About 25 minutes later, my food was served, but no one else's. The way it was served was extremely unsettling. Yet a different server tossed my plate across the table and dumped it in front of the empty seat next to me without a word. The plate actually spun around the table momentarily. I've never seen food dropped off so unceremoniously in a restaurant before. This was bizarre. Was this my dish? Did she drop it off here for a moment while dropping off plates at the table next to me. Everyone at my table looked completely baffled. I wasn't even sure if I should start eating or not. A few minutes later, the other plates arrived at our table, along with our drinks. Three people at my table alone ordered the same Viennese Coffee. Every single one of them looked and tasted completely different, as though not made by the same person or following the same recipe. There's something to be said for consistency and Amadeus was utterly lacking in this. The coffee was supposed to be topped with caramel and cinnamon. One had cinnamon and no caramel, another had a tad bit of caramel and no cinnamon and another had all the caramel pooling at the bottom of his drink. None of the coffees even looked the same and they certainly didn't taste the same. The coffee cups they were served in seemed to be of completely different sizes, too! Mine was the largest, but the other two were dwarfed in comparison. Mine was okay, but with so many great places to grab a coffee in town, it definitely seemed pretty average. My Pierogi Breakfast was decent, but not great and by no means worth the exceedingly long wait and abhorrent service. My pierogis were lukewarm and one was missing the obligatory dollop of sour cream. I've had better at parties hosted by my step-in-laws, who are part Polish. The eggs were served barely warm and had a nice flavor/texture to them, but it was obvious they were sitting under a heat lamp for awhile. The side salad was served with ranch dressing whether you wanted it or not. I guess there was no other choice? I wouldn't know since we weren't asked. At no point during our meal were we asked if everything was okay, etc. Not once. Again, very baffling. After we ate, we were eager to get the checks. We had to practically strong arm our server to prepare our bills. We were ready to pay immediately. We had to shove the bills into the hands of another server just to get out of there. By then, we'd been there for at least two hours! The ambiance was lovely and the decor looked very old world Vienna, but the service and food are totally lacking. read more

This Ann Arbor gem is wonderful on so many levels. First & foremost is the cuisine: authentic superbly prepared and presented Polish, Austrian-Hungarian fare, using freshest & house-made ingredients. The baked goods- from house made rolls to specialty cakes, pastries & desserts are particularly fabulous. Secondly, the service is attentive, professional, and never obtrusive. Veterans Michael and Maya are among the best in the business. Finally, the ambiance is charmingly old European, including the appropriate selection of Strauss, Mozart, Schubert, and other Classics, and occasionally a very talented live classical guitarist! I'm Polish. Like, most of my family still lives over there and I'm first generation US so my bar for Eastern/Central European food is set pretty high. I was really excited to try this place since I don't know of many places you can get a good pierogi in Washtenaw county but unfortunately this place fell a little flat for me. I had the Atlantic ducktrap pancakes for my meal and it was just BLAND. Maybe it was my mistake for not ordering something a little more exciting or traditionally Polish so I could get a good feel for it but that dish sounded so great on the menu I couldn't resist! For the price it should have been much better and much more interesting. I did, however, try a few bites of my fella's Polish combination plate and it was just as disappointing. Not bad but not great. And for $20 dollars for a dish you should get out of this world Polish food. $20 can buy you 2 times as much food in Hamtramck for better quality. The space is cute, though. I will say that. And their liquor was great. I had a honey wine which I really enjoyed. I'd be interested in giving this place a second chance, especially for brunch, but I'm not racing to go back any time soon. On Fat Tuesday, once a year, Amadeus turns into a massive bakery with just one product. And I ordered a dozen assorted Paczki. They were excellent. Not sweet like jelly donuts, not one pound gut bombs. The fillings included custard, lemon, raspberry, and prune. Each Pazcek is smeared with an an identifying glaze. For example, lemon Paczki have a lemon peel glaze. It's a nice touch. I spoke to one fellow (the owner?) who said that its a lot of work but they can stand to do it once a year. He had been up since 10AM Monday when I picked up my reserved Paczki on Tuesday morning. All of the tables were covered in steel trays of Paczki, quite a site. I went back to Amadeus for the first time in several years. The long lapse between visits is not any fault of the restaurant. It's just how the timing worked out for me. This last experience was good and I plan to not let much time pass before my next visit. The waiter I had years ago was excellent. He might have been a professional fine dining waiter. The women who served this time was not as attentive, but reasonable. The restaurant's ambience was comfortable, purposely looking worn and well-loved while staying clean, neat, and not at all decrepit. For brunch, I had the "Meat, Meat, Meat Breakfast", my wife had the "Amadeus". We both had mimosas. (With lots of floating berries in it!) It was all excellent. read more

I came for the Valentines day Special, which consisted of: 1)Choice of Soup (Dill or Sweet Potato Lemon Ginger) 4/5 2) 1 appetizer ( we got the creamed Herring) 0/5 (had to force it down) 3) salads (basic) 2/5 4) choice of entree (I got the potato pancake over chicken slaw, GF got the keilbasa)2/5 ,4/5 5) choice of dessert (passion fruit sponge cake) 3/5 They tried, they really did. Maybe it was my fault for choosing an eastern European restaurant for Vday, but I believe that the food was overpriced for what we got. Having never had authentic Eastern-European food, I have nothing to compare this to, but I was very surprised at how excellent it tasted. The portions are a very generous size, which to me in no way makes a meal, but I'm simply mentioning it here. My s/o had a sampler plate of various things, including the pierogi and meats and was very pleased with it. Everything was full of flavor. Our dinner companion had a light salmon salad that looked divine and she was quite pleased with it as well. I had a dish with chicken and potato pancakes and a slaw-type salad they serve there and loved the creaminess to everything. It had a rich flavor without being too heavy or too creamy in a bad way. I would recommend that you at least try them for dinner. My s/o raves about their baked goods, but I have yet to try the bakery. I will try it and post an updated review in the future. To me Amadeus is a nice change of pace among the same types of restaurants that so often pervade so many American towns. We sat outside and dined and it was very nice; the waitress was attentive without being annoying, which is always a plus. We wanted for nothing with the good service. Again, I'd say give them a try, you've got nothing to lose, as there are plenty of things on the menu that will suit most everyone and it's something different to throw into the mix. read more

This is a great Polish restaurant in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. The staff is 1st generation and cooks like its their home kitchen. The golabki (stuffed cabbage) is great, along with all of their soups and any dish with salmon in it. The food is hearty and filling, but not too overwhelming. The staff is warm and very friendly. They even have live music on Friday and Saturday nights sometimes. Great local pianists and violinists come in and set a great atmosphere for dates, family occasions, or just a nice dinner before a night out on Main Street. read more
