I went here for my birthday two weeks ago based on the wonderful selection of vegetarian options to choose from. The food was outstanding, but the front of the house could have been a little more friendly, as they were put off by my request to wait for a better table, since the one they had available was on top of the hostess stand. It was super crowded and I knew we'd be eating and drinking dinner for at least 2 hours, so I didn't want everyone who walked into the place to be on top of us. We basically waited a half an hour to be seated "at the best seat in the house" I was told, which was just next to it, albeit further from the front. At this point, I was starving, and just wanted to eat. I just don't appreciate being brushed off. The food, however, was excellent. We tried a bunch of sharing plates, like the arahova feta, the winter squash (in an amazing brown butter sauce), three kinds of pasta (one with a unique lemon poppy dressing), and the fish special. There wasn't anything left on the plate. I would definitely go back since the food was outstanding, and the staff eventually grew more friendly when the restaurant became more empty. But I'd avoid the cocktails and stick to their decently priced wines by the glass. read more

Went here for a team lunch in the middle of the week. They actually have a really cute room in the back that's setup for larger parties (we had 10 people). They encourage you to eat family style which was good in the sense that we got to try a bunch of dishes, but each entree could definitely be fit for one person as well. For appetizers we had the burrata and caesar salad. The burrata was super fresh and moist. It came with 2 pieces of perfectly toasted and buttered bread. I actually don't like cheese, but with the bread, it was delicious. The caesar salad was also very good, though be wary for those who don't like tons of dressing. Each piece of salad was coated in dressing and cheese. For entrees we tried the chicken, fish of the day (halibut) and spaghetti. I have to agree with others that the chicken wasn't the best. It was a bit dry and overall not the best I had. It did come with some potatoes though and those were quite good. The halibut was good, but the texture wasn't as flakey as I usually like my fish. It was also topped with salted breadcrumbs? I scraped those off because with it, it was just too salty. Though without them, the fish was a bit bland. The brussels sprouts it came with though were some of the best I have ever had! Even if you don't like brussel sprouts, I would encourage you to try these. The spaghetti was pretty good and the best out of the 3 entrees we had in my opinion. For sides we had broccoli and potatoes. While both were delicious, they did come in tiny portions. The broccoli came out to maybe 8 smaller heads. Overall this was a pretty cute place, though I would say their strong suit is appetizers and sides. The actual entrees impressed me less. read more

After an event at the amory decided to check this place out. Went with a friend so she knew what to order. We shared farro salad, lamb rigatoni, chicken, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. Every thing was really good and we had plenty to take home. Surprisingly I liked the broccoli better than the brussels spouts. The onion mushroom mixture on top if the chicken was fab. But really everything was good. My only complaint is the noise level. I left with a headache. read more

Was visiting NYC with a group of friends recently and found Amali through Eater NYC. This place rocks.... The wine, food and service were impeccable. Our sommelier was very knowledgeable and not intimidating. He recommended some fabulous Greek wines that we enjoyed. But the kicker was the food. Holy smokes... We gasped, it was so good. And the service is great, the last two times I have had Marcos as my server and he is top notch. He goes above and beyond making one feel important and attended to. The food was ok, but is it worth the price? no Their beef for 2 is $95 and grilled fish is $90 and salted fish is $100. Just a little too pricey for what they offer The octopus appetizer was small but good. lots of vinaigrette and salad, and about 5-6 small pieces of octopus. Don't expect a big portion, but the octopus was grilled just right, still tender and flavorful. it would've been better with bread, but we only got one piece each for a group of about 10 ppl, and it took about 40 minutes to get more bread. The service was pretty good. except for the bread. I asked 4 different people. I started asking towards the end of appetizers, and we didn't get it until we were all about done with entrees The pork ribs were pretty good with a good tzatziki sauce and a really good portion. The pappardelle bolognese was ok. The pasta was a little thick, but the sauce was good. Again...would've been much better with bread...but DIDN"T HAVE ANY WHEN WE ASKED FOR IT. yes, i was peeved. cause it's good grilled bread. and i kept asking, and it would've been really good with the food. but no. didn't get it until I had finished my entree. The chicken under a brick just looked a small sad chicken with a tiny side. The grass fed steak was $45. dessert was really good. The cottage cheesecake was ehh, but there was this chocolate icecream with warm stuff thing that was amazing. not a great description, I'll figure it out and edit the post. Amali was wonderful. The cocktails were delicious, the service friendly, the decor warm and inviting and cosy, and the food outstanding. We had between the 3 of us: drinks: red wine, white wine, a spicy tequila cocktail, a bourbon cocktail; apps: pita with a yummy spicy dip, cauliflower and potato fritters, roasted broccoli (awesome); entrees: a seafood bouillabaisse, a whole fish baked in salt (big enough for 2-3 people); desserts: strawberry shortcake, and some kind of chocolate icecream ball thing. The desserts were average, but everything else was excellent, especially the broccoli, the fish, and the spicy dip app. I wish our server had told us the salt fish which was marked as MP was $100 (we didn't think to ask) - and I guess it's ok if you're splitting it 2-3 ways but it was a bit of a sticker shock. That said, we had a great meal and I'd go back when I'm rich. read more

As others have mentioned in previous reviews, the decor, space, and ambiance are all very well done and Amali is a nice change of pace from the typical steakhouse / LAVO options that populate midtown east. It's therefore disappointing that Amali is lacking both in quality of service and food. Service - Each of the four times I've visited (at different times of the day, crowded and not crowded) the service was extremely slow and disorganized. We had reservations on two occasions and were made to wait for 20 minutes on both occasions despite arriving on time. Food - The kitchen uses fresh and high quality ingredients, which is great. Unfortunately, there is nothing that really stands out about the menu. The Buffalo Mozzarella and the roasted chicken under a brick are the best items I've had there but even these aren't quite worth the prices charged. 3 stars for the space, ambiance, and quality of the ingredients. But with a few tweaks, Amali could (and should) be better. read more

Having never been to this restaurant and heard good things about it, I recently took my girlfriend there to celebrate her birthday. We were not disappointed. The food was first rate. My companion raved about her squid ink pasta, and my halibut dish was quite flavorful. The herb bread that preceded the meal was warm and tasty. The ambience of Amali is beautiful. Came here for a date night and decided to order the Chef tasting option thinking we'd get more bang for our buck. Our four courses were a salad, two small servings of pasta and then a chocolate cake. While eating the chocolate cake a server passed by with the same cake however the portion for one was quite larger, I noticed that our dessert was one serving split into two. I usually wouldn't mind that until the bill came. The chef tasting was a whopping $170! Excluding the drinks we ordered. Overall we spent close to $300 for a shared meal that really wasn't worth the price. My suggestion is to stick to separate entrees, you'll leave satisfied and not feeling swindled. read more

The food options here are great. Their salt baked fish is an awesome option if you're sharing. Their pasta is fresh and made in house. I've had their newest addition which is the kakavia (Greek fisherman's stew) it had calamari shrimp corn and mussels and served with bread. For desert had the chocolate cherry bombe which was delicious. Wine list is colossal and their somms know a thing or two about what to pair with your food. We just had a party in their private room on the 2nd floor. The room is spacious and gorgeous. It's large enough to fit 20 people. The décor is great. The service is OK. Waters are professional, but it feels like they are doing you a favor answering questions and recommending wine. Quality of food if fine, but you definitely do not get enough is you order family style. They charged us $103 per person (not including wine) and the amount of food per person was very small. You will be much better of ordering a la carte. Price is very high. On the top of the per person charge ($103 + 20% service charge) they would hit you with $250 per room fee and another 5% administrative fee (they were not able to explain to me what this 5% was for). Bottom line: For this price you can find a better place in terms of food and quality of service. read more

This 4 star is for the brussel sprouts that saved my half burnt whole fish. They were perfectly tart with an obscene amount of lemon just the way I like it. We waited a while for our food and it came out all willy nilly, but our waiter was kind and we were offered a dessert wine as an apology. I want to believe that normally the fish is better and not burnt through the skin on the thinner side. The other side of the fish was tender, but still a bit over-cooked. I should have started with that then I wouldn't have had enough room to touch the burnt side! Since it's so close I'll be back. Their grapefruit pear sangria wasn't sweet at all and simply refreshing if you like that sort of thing. Oh, I almost forgot... the chocolate cake with olive oil ice cream was light and spongey... not something I was looking for after the meal. This place confused me. I like the farm-to-table concept and mission. The service is decent and the ambience isn't too bad either. The food disappointed me. I found the food to be lacking flavor - or at least a punch. The portion sizes are extremely small. Either offer up 30% more or charge 30% less. After ordering an appetizer, a cheese and meat plate, and 3 main courses, among the 3 of us, we still felt hungry. This extended to the iced coffee as well, which was so small it was served in a cocktail glass. The burger doesn't come with a side. $19 for a piece of lamb between two DRY and THICK buns. I came to Amali for lunch with a friend a few months ago, and both of us enjoyed the food a lot. We had the eggplant to start (so good) and shared a grilled whole fish which was perfectly seasoned with herbs and olive oil. The fish is definitely big enough to share between two people. The only reason I gave it three stars veruss four was because of the service. While attentive, our fish took about 30 minutes to come out to the table, which seems a bit long. The waiter did apologize for the delay, but if whole fish takes that long (which it usually doesn't in other restaurants), I wish they had made us aware before placing the order as we were on at time limit. read more

10/10 for food, service and atmosphere! My husband and I (embarrassingly) spent about 45 minutes on OpenTable searching for a place to go with another couple for dinner. Amali could not have been more perfect! The tables were perfectly spaced apart and the ambiance was perfect - they did such a great job of creating a welcoming atmosphere. The food was delicious - we had the labneh, octopus, salmon tartare and four pastas. Each dish was better than the next! The chef came to check on us twice, and it was clear that he put so much love into each dish. Every single person on their staff went so far above and beyond to make our experience great. We really can't say enough about the staff - they were so conscientious and thoughtful at every turn. It's such a challenging time and we're so appreciative for their hard work. Went to Amali a while ago and things might have changed since then so take that into consideration. At the time we went, the restaurant had recently changed names. In fact, we thought we were going to the Greek restaurant that preceded Amali. We looked at the Mediterranean menu and decided to stay. The food was good however the reason for my 3 stars is because of the laughable sized portions for the entree - more specifically, the lamb. When the waiter brought our entrees to the table, I was shocked to see a single lamb chop and a 1 inch square piece of lamb brisket. The appetizers were larger than this. It took me all but 3 bites to finish my dinner and I was still hungry. To add insult to injury, their m/p land entree turned out to be $34. I ended up emailing the manager who stands by the portion size and defends it's price because it's sourced from the same farm as Thomas Keller. Seriously? To put it in perspective, you can go to Per Se and order off the salon menu where the Herb Roasted Medallion Of Elysian Fields Farm's Lamb is $46. So let's see, $34 for the single lamb chop and a bite of lamb brisket from Amali or $46 lamb dish from the most decorated chef in America and two time chef/owner of the best restaurant in the world. Had their salmon (was watery) and baked chicken (despite looking bland was well seasoned). While waiting, ordered a few drinks at the bar. Reasonably priced and friendly service.
