We spent $47 ($57 with tip) for breakfast. I could only eat half of my spongy Belgian waffle. The hash browns were dry and had an unpleasant taste, I couldn't put my finger on it. I could only eat half of them. My partner liked her eggs. She ate half of her dry hash browns. The bacon was good. I will never again spend $57.00 on an average (at best) breakfast. Not sure what the deal is? Bad hash brown vendor? Crappy frozen browns product? Was the waffle iron not pre-heated enough to cook the inside of that waffle, let alone offer a spongy exterior? I don't know. I just know it wasn't good. Amalia, if you are going to charge a premium price for your food you need to offer premium food products and preparation. Service was excelent. read more

I was impressed by the quick service and the food was served at a great temperature. The prices were reasonable, and overall, the service was quite good. However, I deducted a star because the table we were seated at was not clean; it had leftover food, butter, and some sort of sauce on it. Although we requested a clean, it was wiped down only partially, and there was no acknowledgment or apology for the oversight. A little attention to detail and customer care could make a big difference! I will try it again and maybe I can change this to a 5 star. read more

The staff at Amalia's is amazing. They are always incredibly friendly and engaging with their customers. Our family comes in a few times a year and are always recognized and treated like family. Sam, one of the servers is always aiming to please. You ask her for more syrup and before you turn around, she has it for you. She's so darn pleasant.....Amelia's is lucky to have her. Restaurant is clean and sparkling. My 2 scrambled eggs were fluffy and light and my 2 pancakes were thin, just the way I like them. But the prices were Ridiculous!!!!!! With tip my bill was $18. Last week in Brookfield i dined on a center cut sirloin steak with potato and warm loaf of bread for $13.99. I already told several friends and none will ever dine at Amalia's. Hard decision to make .....a sirloin steak with potato and warm loaf of bread for $13.99 (tip extra) or 2 eggs and 2 pancakes for $18. with tip. We've come here for many years and always found the food and service great and love the location and atmosphere. We hadn't visited for a year until a few weeks ago and were shocked by how ridiculously high the prices had become. I'm mean unbelievably high. Even the dine in coffee prices were crazy. I had a breakfast burrito special I saw on the board but missed the price and was shocked when the bill came. I have gone to this establishment for many years. But haven't visited it lately as breakfast wasn't a priority for me. Upon ordering I was served very promptly. I could tell that what I had ordered had been made much earlier as all items were very dried out and only slightly warm. I had noticed that the cook was out and about visiting with other customers. I have had this place bookmarked for a while now for breakfast and I finally got over to them. The place is downtown Oconomowoc in an old school indoor mall type space, kind of cool. The place itself was charming with the exposed brick walls and wood booths and a high counter up front. I got there a little after 7am and one table was in service so I was seated right away. The menu had all the standard breakfast items and the country fried steak just sounds good. The coffee was standard diner crap that I usually don't get but today I took a chance, fail but the top off service was constant. My breakfast came in about 10 minuets and looked good with country fried steak topped country gravy, sunny side eggs, hash browns and sourdough toast. My first bite of the country fried steak yielded a frozen/ fake one that was like room temperature so on to the hash browns, not hot either. The country fried steak didn't have enough time to cook and sit around to not be hot so I think it's pre cooked. The hash browns were ok with that golden look and the eggs were perfect sunny side and tasty. The butter on the toast didn't melt totally either, the whole breakfast was not hot/warm at all. Overall the service was great but the breakfast was average and didn't seem cooked to order because it was not warm/hot to table which was disappointing and at just under $18 with tip it's pricy for a mediocre breakfast experience. read more

Great family place with excellent food! The kids got Mickey Mouse pancakes for dinner and my husband and I got Mexican dishes (chimichanga & tacos), everything was delicious. Super friendly staff too, the bus boy kept coming by to cheer up my 1yr old who was not happy about being in her high chair, and the waitstaff was great too. Lots of variety on the menu so looking forward to the next time we stop in. Also great that it's connected to a strip mall, when the 1yr old just wouldn't stop screaming my husband went out with her to walk the halls so we still ended on a good note. read more

I visit Amalia's for breakfast on my yearly visit to Wisconsin and this year did not disappoint! I had a custom breakfast scramble that was delicious. Food is good, but the owner insists on vacuuming while you are eating. We go out to eat to get away from home chores such as vacuuming and cooking. I don't want to hear vacuuming while eating, or feel the vacuum slamming into the base of our booth, or having talk louder due to the noise level. We wanted a nice lunch out. Amelia's is a nice place for a quick breakfast or lunch. Vacuuming puts dust in the air. I don't want restaurant floor dust in my food. Use a manual sweeper. Please stop vacuuming when people are eating or we will go somewhere else. We have dined at Amelia's twice. Vacuuming occurred both times. Please stop. read more

The waitress was nice and helped me right away with my carry out order. The food was terrible! I ordered a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries on the side. The sandwich said on the menu it came with lettuce, mayonnaise, and tomato. I asked not to include the mayo. When I got home and opened the sandwich all it had was pieces of chicken. No lettuce or tomato. Plus, the chicken was rubbery and tasted terrible! The sweet potato fries wilted! Eekkk! I threw everything away. A total waste of over $18.00. This place seemed like a nice family stop but we were rather disappointed. I should of known better since their menu had too many different options (American, stir fry, Mexican, Italian and more). My sandwich was supposed to be a chicken sandwich with bacon, cheese, tomato and lettuce but someone didn't tell the cook, as it came out as a cut up chicken breast with a giant slathering of mayo. Also the "pepper-jack" cheese looked more like a sauce. I did like the chicken dumpling soup. It was very good with an assortment of dumplings, chicken and carrots. Lastly, I will say that the staff spent more time sweeping and mopping then anything (3 of them), they never once asked us how our meals were. All in all, I would skip this stop. read more

I have eaten at Amalia's for a long time and have always enjoyed their food and friendly staff. I was in today and despite the Governor's mandate for mask wearing, none of the staff was wearing one when I first arrived. I was wearing one and after a while, the servers put masks on, but incorrectly as they didn't cover their noses. I would have expected Amalia's to follow the mask mandate so I'm quite disappointed. This is not a political statement, it's a health statement and one of which reflects caring for their customers and employees...that's it. I hope to see them follow the mandate and also encourage their patrons to do the same. read more

I stopped by and ordered a single brownie dessert from their bakery section. Upon trying I found what seems to be a paint chip within the brownie. After calling we had to bring the dessert back in, at that point you would think you would get a refund and an apology. They said the refund could only be given with the card I used to purchase. Now that I've already driven back and forth with a dessert that isn't consumable and they won't just hand me $5 (I wasn't carrying the card I purchased with). Very disappointing, will not be returning. read more

Let me start this with what led me to Amalia's... I was across the street at 8am to see about removing points for a recent speeding ticket at the Lake Country Municipal Court. Which meant I needed to get up in Madison and leave my apartment before 7am. Breakfast was on my horizon and the only thing I thought about for 2 hours. I went on my iPhone Yelp App (insert shameless promotion) and looked for breakfast restaurants and Amalia's was the closest option. It was located within a local business cluster across the street, and had 2 bakery windows in the hallway (which I noticed as I left - delicious looking cinnamon buns!). The place was pretty empty (9am on a Friday morning). I took my seat up at the bar area and there was another man at the other end (who I quickly realized to be a regular, the way he kept an ongoing conversation with several waitresses). The menu had quite the variety and they had chalkboards in a few places with additional specials. I went with one of their Skillets with 2 eggs on top. The meal was very tasty and not overly greasy. Side toast lingered on the almost burnt appearance, but tasted fine after smothering it with jam. The thing that threw me off was seeing what looked like a 10 year old boy bringing out dishes to tables. My mind went to labor laws (jokingly - but they're right across the police station!). That made it feel more of a family restaurant until one of the waitresses took a call and commented to another waitress that they wanted to speak with the owners. But the owners weren't local, 'they likely live in Florida' and they laughed. Bummer, I thought this was a local little Oconomowoc family diner. Nope. I don't find myself in Oconomowoc all too often, but I can definitely see myself stopping in again for another breakfast! read more

When I think of a good ol'American diner, this is the kind of place of think of. Unfortunately, Amalia's exhibits the worst of the all American diner. Along with the being just clean enough to pass health codes, the breakfast is mediocre, and the prices are not commensurate with the quality (priced too high). And I consider some of this forgivable if you know what you're getting into. What is unforgivable is poor service. And that is what I've received upon every visit to Amalia's. I can forgive one server having a bad day, but still making the effort, y'know, because it's your job. But if you work in a diner, then you need to know that people will come in for breakfast, and then sit for coffee and visit for......how every long they please. We did not appreciate the dirty look, loud comments of "they have been here for 2-hours!" to your co-workers, or ignoring us when we asked refills on our coffee. Luke's Diner, you are not. More like a Flo's where everyone tells you to kiss their grits. read more

I can always tell when a restaurant has a cook or chef who loves what they do, unfortunately Amalia's cook probably couldn't care less and judging by the food he probably hates his job. I guess I could sum it all up by saying it was a greasy pile of bland garbage. The service was also poor, maybe fair at best since a couple of our items were completely forgotten. Love this place! Hard to give a five star review for a diner place like this but Amalia's certainly deserves at least 4 stars. We have a lakehouse on Oconomowoc Lake and this weekend we brought my 90 year old dad with us. He is a WWII veteran and the waitresses went over the top to honor him. The food is traditional, hearty breakfast diner lunch fare. Don't come here if you are from Chicago and expect canary tongues on toast points or egg white with gluten free muffins, if American cheese scares you stay away. Nope, foodies this is the real deal. Their soups are awesome. I had eggs over easy and some really good "dippin' bread. Great hearty fare, decent prices and super sweet waitstaff. Sorry they don't serve Starbucks but their coffee is legit and they will make sure to keep your cup of joe full. My Dad went out of his way to find our waitress to thank her. I am not one to randomly toss around a 5 star rating; you have to EARN it! Went there today (a Saturday) for lunch (around 12:30). We were a party of seven (including one 6 yr old and one 2 year old) and were immediately seated. My brother-in-law has been raving about this place, so this was our chance to get out and see if it lived up to all of the fuss. Orders ranged from the cod to the pepperoni pizza (kids' menu) to the BLT panini (with the T on the side) to the stir fry and a few other entrees and a side of fresh fruit. My panini was delicious, although, admittedly I am not a panini connesuer--mostly because I don't often get (i.e., "like") them. It came with a big ole dill pickle and soup. I gave my chicken dumpling soup to my husband (but later regretted it after smelling and then taste testing it. Yum!). I had a side salad instead. The fresh fruit included cantaloupe, muskmelon, and watermelon. The cod had an option of mashed potatoes, which someone else in the party ordered. It came slathered in gravy. Wished the waitstaff would ask if you'd like gravy as a nice reminder. Unfortunately the gravy was not wanted in this case, but we hear the mashed potatoes are made from, get this, real potatoes! Many of the entrees include a dessert (ice cream, for instance), but you can also "upgrade" to some of their pie slices for a $1-2 more. I went for the additionally priced Raspberry Muffin. Just like their slice of Cherry pie (which went over quite well by its recipient), the muffins are huge and, more importantly, delicious. (Reminds me of the Mug 'n Muffin muffins that used to inhabit the Amalia's location.) We had our water refilled multiple times without our asking, so the wait staff was on top of their customer service, to be sure. We had several other requests (additional napkins, straws, etc) that were all handled mostly without problem and without much wait. The kids were given crayons and placemats to color. A highchair was easily provided and seating was quite child-friendly. Three to each side of the bench (which can be moved) with room at the end for the highchair. 4.5 stars for the child-friendly aspect (not quite 5 b/c there wasn't that much in the restaurant itself for kids to look at/be entertained by). Food and service, though, were a definite 5 stars. I had so much food that I had no need for dinner and that's not easily accomplished. Oh and parking was no problem. Either park on WI Ave. or in the big lot behind the restaurant (drive around the corner and you'll see it's free parking for two hours). Would absolutely go back and would definitely recommend it to others. Certainly better than any restaurant in Watertown, as of yet, though it pains me to admit. read more

A great family restaurant in the heart of Oconomowoc! I recently went to Amalia's as part of a family gathering. It's located in a building that has been a car dealership and (I think) an appliance store at one time but now has been converted to a mini-mall. Amalia's is a warm and welcoming spot with mostly booths. The daily specials are hand-written on a chalkboard that is right in front of you as you enter the restaurant. Of course, no one pays attention to them anyway, but our server was happy to tell us about them. The five of us ordered rather disparate entrees, a club sandwich, a fish fry, veal parmigiana and two of us had pan-fried lake perch. My lake perch was delicious, cooked just right, firm and juicy. It was served with lemon and a container of great cole slaw. I opted for potato pancakes, which were tasty although not of a consistency I'm familiar with. The server offered syrup (um, no thanks) and apple sauce, which is always my topping of choice for potato pancakes. The veal parmigiana was reported to be very good with a portion too large to finish. The fish fry was excellent. The club sandwich was huge, and after struggling with it, my friend wound up taking it apart and eating it with a fork. We all had large portions, our meals were great, and the price for the five us of was more than reasonable. I don't get to Oconomowoc much anymore but when I do return, Amalia's will be on my radar screen! read more

I come into town about once a year and always visit Amalia's Family Restaurant. Amalia's is exactly just that a family restaurant. It has a diner feel, and long time waitresses that know your name even when you come in only one time a year. To me the atmosphere is cozy, and friendly. It feels like your coming home to friends and family. Amalia's must be doing something right to maintain their employee's longevity and happiness. Now let's talk about the cooking from muffins, (cinnamon) were almost as big as my two year old head! It was definatly homemade! The homemade pies and deserts are all exquisite! I have to say I absolutely love the chocolate muffins too! Can anyone say CHILI! Amalia's has the best chili EVER!! I have to have some everytime I come into town. Leaving without is a complete tragedy:( All I can say is I am NEVER disappointed with what I have ordered.
