Came by for dinner the other night and it was a world class experience. San Laurel is a Jose Andres restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide and is located on the 11th floor of the Conrad Los Angeles. Parking is available across the street at the Walt Disney Arts Center for $10 after 4:30 pm. The restaurant apparently validates parking. Dining is available both indoors or outdoors. The dining area is extravagant. Our server, Johnny, was fantastic providing suggestions and checking up on us throughout the evening. Started off with the heirloom tomatoes and they were excellent. Super light and refreshing! The spanish ham appetizer was world class with super fragrant ham along with the super tasty toast. I do miss the Spanish ham prices in Europe, where it's like the price of buying a taco. ;) The pea appetizer was also excellent. The presentation was world class, featuring contrasting textures and flavors. The Hokkaido scallops appetizer along with the gambas appetizer were both excellent. I was slightly surprised that the shrimps were served tail and skin off...probably to account for the demographic and clientele. For the main, the wagyu flat iron was excellent. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the charring was fantastic. The marbling of the steak was world class. The duck breast entree was also excellent with super crispy skin along with a red centre. Ended the meal with the cheesecake which was surprisingly not too heavy or sweet. ~$112/head after tax and gratuity for dinner.

While exploring Downtown LA, I decided to stop in for breakfast at this restaurant (San Laurel) - tucked inside the Conrad Hotel, and it turned out to be a wonderful start to the day. From the warm welcome at the host stand to the attentive service throughout the meal, the hospitality was exceptional. A special shoutout to Andrea, whose friendly demeanor, knowledge of the menu, and thoughtful service elevated the entire experience. The breakfast menu offers an impressive selection, making it difficult to choose. I settled on a cappuccino, a mimosa, and the omelet with mushroom ragù and jamón Ibérico, accompanied by a side of roasted potatoes. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The omelet was light and perfectly cooked, with the earthy mushroom ragù and rich, savory jamón Ibérico creating a balanced combination of flavors. The roasted potatoes were crisp, well-seasoned, and impossible to stop eating. The setting is equally memorable. Sipping coffee while looking out toward the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall made the experience feel distinctly Los Angeles. Excellent cuisine, impeccable service, and an inviting atmosphere make this a place worth returning to. Breakfast exceeded my expectations, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to explore their lunch and dinner menus.

Well, where to start: I will NEVER eat at San Laurel again! In the photo below is my lunch menu, notice the Miyazaki entry at $210, well that's the reason for this review. Mr. Cruz, our server, suggests the Miyazaki (A4 Wagyu beef) steak because they had it at a special price of $110. When I receive the bill, I bring the price to Mr. Cruz attention, he tells me that is the price of the steak. I politely reminded him of what he said the price ($110) of the steak was when he offered it to me and my wife. I politely reminded Mr. Cruz not lie to his customers--and that's what real issue of this post is, the lie he told me regarding the real price of the steak. So, I paid the tab $481.80 plus a $75 dollar tip (15% of the tab), I was going to leave ZERO dollars, but my wife is the kind person in our relationship. In conclusion, even if they were to offer me a full refund, I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO San Laurel--the damage is done, PERMANENTLY! @Jose Andres, it is employees like Mr. Cruz that will bankrupt your restaurants, you very well know that it is REPEAT customers like me that keep restaurants thriving and its doors open. Well, unfortunately, San Laurel has seen the last penny it will ever receive from me--good luck, you're going to need it. I noticed Agua Viva, San Laurel's sister restaurant, is no longer open, I wonder why? Maybe, it is because of servers who lie to boost sales (dollars) just as Mr. Cruz did to me and my wife.

I had a 5:15 pre-theater reservation and I was seated promptly. I had a nice little inside deuce facing north. The restaurant is simply but elegantly decorated. The bar is a focal point as is the large wrap around dining terrace. After taking a look at the menu, I had a brief conversation with Elizabeth about the size of the dishes and what to order. I wanted to try a few things so I started with the fennel soup, and then I had the straciatella salad & the scallops. The fennel soup with crabmeat was so beautifully presented and it tasted absolutely heavenly. I wanted that bowl to be never-ending. It was my favorite dish of the evening! Btw, the only miss of the night was that the soup and salad were brought out at the same time. That was not ideal, but when I told Elizabeth, she kindly returned the salad to the kitchen and brought out a fresh one once I'd finished my soup. The salad was good, but quite sweet. I also didn't enjoy the little frisée like, twig-esque lettuce leaves that were tossed in although the strawberries and other elements in the salad were so delicious. It was a bit like having dessert early. The scallops were perfectly cooked and divine. I enjoyed them. I could have done without the sliced grapes, but they weren't really a bother. I probably should have just ended with these items, but I was still hungry. So I ordered the vermicelli Mac n cheese. It came out in a piping hot red serving dish and was interesting... the cheese sauce did not have the depth of flavor that I was looking for, but with the crunchy shallots and the umami of the mushrooms, some bites were quite satisfying. This dish was in the larger side, so I ended up taking most of it to go. I also had a glass of Lefrana 2021, & it was pleasant and accompanied my dishes well. Overall, this was an elevated meal is a sophisticated yet welcoming environment. The service was quite good. I was referred to by name throughout the experience, and all of the staff members were professional and attentive. The bathroom is gender neutral meaning that there is one large restroom with individual stalls for everyone to use. I noted valet parking and self-parking, but I walked & took Angels Flight from Little Tokyo, so I can't comment more on it. Gracias!

We had some reservations walking in, mostly because we were not too familiar with the menu or the cuisine. But honestly, we ended up leaving absolutely delighted. San Laurel at the Conrad Los Angeles, from Michelin chef José Andrés, was such a nice date night treat. The food has that Spanish-inspired feel with a California touch, and everything we tried had a rich and memorable flavor. The menu is not huge, but I actually liked that. It feels like they are not trying to do too much, and instead put more attention into making each dish really count. Every plate felt thought out, from the flavors to the presentation. We started dinner with the bread, roasted eggplant, and seared scallops - already a great way to kick things off. The bread was unique - light, crispy, and a perfect companion to the sauces. The roasted eggplant was something we had never had before. It had a nice depth of flavor and made for an interesting start to the meal. The scallops were beautifully seared and tasty. From there, we also enjoyed the vegetables, Wagyu Flat Iron, sea bass, and dessert. Portions were just right, the pacing was smooth, and nothing felt rushed. Service was also commendable, especially from our server Andrea, who was warm, attentive, and made the evening feel easy and relaxed. Dessert was a great surprise. The Milhojas was not on the menu but came recommended, and I'm glad we went with it. It is a Spanish-style layered pastry, similar to a mille-feuille, with crisp flaky layers and cream in between. Light, delicate, creamy, and a really nice way to end the meal. Overall, this was a lovely date night dinner and a very enjoyable experience. Great flavors, beautiful presentation, good portions, smooth pacing, and wonderful service. We would definitely come back and try the others to the menu!

    Japanese Milk Punch (right side)

San Laurel, on top of the Conrad hotel, is a restaurant delivering dishes from chef Jose Andres. If you can find street parking, feel free to park there. If not, valet is $15 with validation. Once parked, we headed to the rooftop to a view overlooking the Walt Disney concert hall. We had a reservation so we were seated right away with a perfect view right around sunset. Started with cocktails, getting the Japanese Milk Punch with Suntory Toki Japanese blended whiskey, yuzu, lemongrass, orange, lemon, nutmeg and clarified with milk. An interesting cocktail with a nice flavor profile, with all of the notes present but nothing overpowering. Well balanced. Food, we started with the oysters, bluefin tuna crudo and fennel soup. The oysters were great with a passion fruit cream paired in the shell. Never had the two paired together and I didn't know I needed that in my life at some point. So tasty. The bluefin tuna crudo was also nice, with a raspberry jous and fresh raspberries. The fish was perfect and the raspberry amped the dish up. But the trash either was the fennel soup with dungeness crab, Manchego espuma and fennel pollen. I don't even really know how to describe this except that it was phenomenal. Our server recommended it and I'm so glad he did. For entrees, we split the wagyu flat iron with a side vermicelli mac n cheese. The flat iron was a Blackhawk Farms flat iron with cone cabbage, spiced piquillo puree and veal jus. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly. The Mac n cheese was very interesting, definitely not your typical Mac n cheese with fideuá pasta, Idiazábal cheese, seasonal mushrooms, egg yolk sauce and crispy shallots. We e very excited for this but it turned out to be the least favorite of everything we are. I don't know if it was the expectation or the lack of cheese in comparison to everything else in the dish, but I don't think I would get it again. Overall, great vibes, staff was very friendly with solid recommendations, and great food. Absolutely get the fennel soup and the oysters, as well as the flat iron. Bluefin was good but not a must, and skip on the Mac n cheese. But definitely go eat at San Laurel when you get a chance.

Yogurt parfait and bacon. A simple breakfast that shockingly provoked an unexpected emotional response.
    Mike M.

That is hands down the best yogurt parfait I have ever had. I've eaten in plenty of Michelin star restaurants and in each I've appreciated the passion and focus that the chefs brought to their craft, but it has never shocked me the way that this yogurt parfait did. It was truly stunning. At first bite I distinctly thought, "Oh, mint, that's interesting." I then decided to run the yogurt over my tongue which I had slightly burnt on my coffee (which really was a bit too hot, be careful out there) and continued on as one would. It wasn't until the fourth or fifth bite that I thought, "This is incredible!" I actually stopped, pulled out my phone and took a picture of the yogurt, not because I originally intended to review it but rather because I realized I need to tell the world about this parfait and I would want to remember it (you'll notice in the photo I tried to hide that I'd already taken a few bites). The texture, the complexity of complimentary flavors, the crunchiness of the granola, the freshness of the berries were all done to perfection. Even the presentation was distinct and enjoyable. I paused on my last few bites and considered for a moment that would be sad that the yogurt parfait would be gone in a few short moments. As I finished, I noted that I was right. I sat for a moment and felt genuine sadness at the fact the parfait was gone. I am not this emotional of a person, I'm really not, it really was just that good. The next few moments I sat and considered ordering another but decided not to (I was already full). Then I considered whether I would ever take another trip to LA just for this parfait (spoiler, I would). I mentioned this to the waitress, who was pitch perfect by the way, and she generously told me all about the dish (yes I am calling the yogurt parfait a "dish."). I'll stop here as if you're reading this, I don't want to ruin your experience by overselling to the purveyor. This post is not meant for them. To them I simply say, "Try the yogurt parfait." To the chef and staff of San Laurel instead I say, bravo your simple delectable yogurt parfait illicited an unexpected emotional response from the cold heart of a passerby. Well done.

    Jamón Ibérico
    Michael M.

I've been to many José Andrés restaurants over the years, and most have lived up to my expectations (small plates, high prices, good service). San Laurel fit the profile, but somehow I left unsatisfied. We started with the jamón Ibérico, which was an astonishingly small portion for $40. In retrospect, we should have spent the extra $10 for the pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) to make it more filling. The ham croquettes (also wildly overpriced for five), were OK, but not memorable. I've had much better for a third of the price. I scarcely remember the rest of the meal. The view from the terrace is awesome, as is the price of a martini. It comes in one those cute little coupe glasses that "nice" restaurants use these days. For $22 each. I would have had to spend $66 to feel anything. I'm glad I went, don't need to go back

Located downtown at the Conrad. Across street from Disney Hall. Wonderful service! Here for brunch before a play. Very chic contemporary decor. Outdoor lovely patio. Very nice brunch menu with the most popular breakfast items. Eggs were good. Across the street from Music Center.

Got to enjoy San Laurel a number of times during my brief staycation at The Conrad this week. I was incredibly excited to check out dinner service, as San Laurel has been on my list basically since it opened. Dinner was nice but breakfast honestly blew it away in terms of food and service. Dinner was nice, albeit a bit crowded on a Tuesday evening. The salt air margarita was fantastic with a salty, foamy top that added a little something extra to every sip. A very inventive cocktail from Chef José Andrés. The specialty Jamón croquetas were even better. Thinly sliced iberico ham on top of a perfectly melty, lightly fried cheese croquettes. Definitely my favorite thing that I ate during my three visits here. The gambas were good -- beautifully butterflied shrimp with small fingerling potatoes. Tasted good but was, in fact, just five shrimp and five individual small potatoes. More of a lunch portion than a dinner portion. I of course at it all, as well as a plate of chicken tenders and fries from room service shortly after. Breakfast portions more than made up for it. My first meal I had a wonderful bowl on congee and a side of the iberico ham alongside an iced americano. Absolutely delicious would definitely order this same thing again next time. For my second breakfast I had a plate of the olive oil pancakes and a side of bacon. The bacon was honestly my fault. I asked the waiter if the ham was exceptionally better than the bacon, since that's kind of their whole specialty, and he kind of hesitantly agreed that it was. Still I was feeling adventurous and tried the bacon anyway. It was good but definitely did not compete to that thin cured ham. The pancakes were also delightful with delicious butter, syrup, and a berry compote.

Absolutely loved my experience at San Laurel! Located inside the Conrad Hotel, this Michelin-starred restaurant truly delivers on every level. The view alone is worth it -- seeing the Walt Disney Concert Hall right from your table is such a uniquely LA experience. Dinner was especially memorable -- the seafood dishes were exceptional and full of flavor. Everything felt fresh, refined, and thoughtfully prepared. Breakfast was just as impressive. Enjoying the morning meal while looking out at the Disney Hall was honestly stunning. Whether you sit outside or inside, both offer great ambiance -- the outdoor seating is beautiful and relaxing, while the indoor space feels elegant and comfortable. Service was excellent throughout -- warm, attentive, and professional. This place exceeded my expectations, and I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend if you're looking for a memorable dining experience in LA!

Still a great choice for a meal before a show at the music center. With weather warming up, it's actually comfortable to sit on the patio with glorious views of Disney Hall. Service is always top notch from reception to servers. They excel at making guests comfortable even if unusual requests are made (our party had none, but we heard the table next to us questioning the ingredients of several dishes). We started with the always delicious eggplant, tried the peas for the first time, and went on to the gambas and lamb chops. It's so comforting to go back to a wonderful restaurant and find consistency with the ingredients and skill at every visit. Prices have give up slightly in the past year, but with the quality ingredients and professional service, this remains my go to for a meal before a show.

For the outdoor seating, dog is allowed?

Service animals only. Highly unlikely that emotional support animals would be permitted. Even if they did, confident the other patrons would not welcome.

Is there outside dining in the evening and if so, where would that be located?

I didn't sit outdoors but I saw it and it looks beautiful. Wraps around most of the restaurant.

Is the main menu only offered during dinner time or is it also offered during the morning open hours?

The drinks were delicious, and I loved that there were heaters on the patio (though they did get very hot at times). Our server was so kind and brought us a celebratory drink. I do wish there were more explanations with the beverages, especially for the Paid Vacation as most people will not realize you're supposed to bite into the buzz button for the tingly sensation. I would come back, but need some time for my wallet to recover first, haha!

Matt B. and I are living with my parents these days, and one of the benefits of this arrangement is…read morethat we can leave the house quite easily after the kids go to bed. We decided to get a drink to celebrate Father's Day, only to strike out at the first two bars we tried--I guess a lot of places are closed at 9:30 on a Sunday. This is how we ended up at Thunderbolt, a buzzy bar in Echo Park, just far enough away that we'd never made our way over. I loved it immediately. Thunderbolt has the friendly, comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood bar and the hip aesthetic and high-level cocktails of a millennial boozer destination. (Not that young people can't or shouldn't hang out here, but it seems especially geared toward people like us, who drank at Walker Inn a decade ago.) We ended up sitting next to a guy who regularly drives up from Palos Verdes. I guess the place gets pretty busy, but it was ideal on a Sunday night. Happening but not crowded, with just enough space at the bar for us to grab two seats together. The bartender was great, super helpful and welcoming. He also made excellent drinks. Thunderbolt is one of those bars with an encyclopedic illustrated book for a menu. Not a long menu, just a detailed one, with a lot of information available about each drink. We got a Liquid Picnic and a Barcelonnette--just one round to close out the weekend. Both were delicious. The Liquid Picnic was a smooth, savory gin martini made with London dry gin, tomato, citron, vermouth, rosemary, and black pepper. I learned from the book that it used clarified tomato water. (There was also further reading about the clarification process.) The Barcelonnette was a mezcal sour with Suze, passionfruit, and lime, the foam made without egg white through some geeky mixologist process. Thunderbolt is not our neighborhood bar, but we plan to go back when we can to check out the rest of the menu. It's a wonderful place, well worth a jaunt on the freeway.
