Leftover Rainbow Roll and the Philadelphia Roll (instagram: wooneats)
    Kiana S.

I came here for lunch over the weekend, and it wasn't crowded, which made for a nice and relaxing dining experience. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and the Philadelphia Roll. The Rainbow Roll was enjoyable, and I appreciated the variety of fresh fish layered on top of the roll, which added both flavor and texture. The Philadelphia Roll was also tasty, and I especially liked the cream cheese, which paired well with the salmon and gave the roll a rich, creamy bite. Overall, it was a pleasant lunch, and I'd be happy to come back and try more items from the menu.

I've had amami sushi at other locations before a couple years ago but this was my first time post covid trying them again and at this specific location. My husband and I enjoyed the friendly and efficient service from our waitress. The fish quality is very good for an affordable price. Yummy nigiris. Great chicken karage appetizer and delicious hamachi crudo! The short ribs were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The negitoro was very tasty and the sushi roll we had was okay (tried something new of our usual and not our preference) Great beer and nice free ice cream dessert at the end!

We came on a Saturday night, and the place was fairly packed! Service was quick and friendly and as always served with a piping cup of tea! We opted for our usual: Omakase Miso soup Melt in your mouth roll Toro Salmon belly Walked away for less than $200, including a 20% tip!

Food: great place for affordable sushi, if not the most affordable omakase we've seen in town. The fish pieces are large and the rice is well seasoned, although a bit smaller compared to other nigiri's. there are many types of wasabi and sometimes the fish comes pre loaded with wasabi, so be sure to check before diving in and adding more. Service: nice servers, they're accommodating and there is free ice cream at the end! Ambiance: definitely feels like a lot of locals or usuals come in. People don't take their time to browse the menu to much and are quick to order. It's a casual sit down vibe!

I really don't know why it took me this long to try out Amami (I literally live a 10 minute walk away). We came here early Saturday evening and got seated right away. The interior is very cute and clean. For those visiting the area, parking may be scarce, but honestly that can be said about many places in SF. Now onto the food: we ordered the soft shell crab and two omakases. The soft shell crab came to us in four pieces, was super crispy on the outside and very juicy on the inside. The omakase consisted of 10 pieces all served at the same time. Our waitress walked us through each piece and the order of which we should eat. My brother and I absolutely loved the omakase - $42 each AND tastes amazing?? Honestly, such a good deal for what you get! The fish tasted so fresh and each piece of the omakase tasted like it was very carefully crafted to perfection. I also just loved the fish to rice ratio, Amami gives a lot of fish on top of the small bed of rice for each piece. Would definitely recommend this spot to any sushi lover out there! I'd love to revisit and try some of their rolls & sake.. or maybe just get the omakase again :p

I came for lunch and there was no wait. I got the 10 piece omakase, salmon lover, and the dragon roll. The omakase set was good and fresh. They offer fresh wasabi with the omakase. The rolls were decent size and also good. I would definitely be back again for the omakase and it is worth for the price!

Admittedly, the price meets the quality. It's not high quality with a high price but it's definitely decent. I came for their $25 lunch special with 7 piece nigiri and California roll to compare with their $42 omakase everyone mentions. Both were great for the price and good quality. Service is great and checked in on us despite a totally dead front they didn't just sit in the back and wait for us to call them. Inside is very average bright sushi restaurant. Would recommend friends and families to try but again, don't expect a proper legit omakase but you'll leave full and satisfied.

Easy to walk in on a weekday and find a table. The menu is the same as San Bruno. Good service, clean and amazingly fresh fish. The portions are huge. They are really generous with their fish. I've been here twice now. There's meter parking on the street.

I'm still grappling with the fact that I paid $71 through Grubhub for sashimi slices so tiny they could double as communion wafers. Yes, I know--it's San Francisco, where rent is high and portion sizes are low. But no matter how exquisite, how delicate, how artfully arranged those micro-slivers were, my eyes still saw about $20 worth of food staring back at me. Meanwhile, at House of Fusion, I could have been feasting on bold, unapologetic hunks of sushi for a fraction of the price. Maybe I lack the refined palate for such culinary minimalism, or maybe I'm just too attached to my wallet--which, by the way, was openly weeping.

Dined in for lunch. Food was good and tasted fresh. Nigiri had large cuts of fish and the rice didn't fall apart when picked up. Seemed to be freshly grated wasabi too. Service was attentive and efficient. Booth seating was comfy, spacious and clean.

Our friends took us here for a omakase dinner! They said they frequent Amami often and even sometimes plan their trip to SF around eating here. All four of us got the Omakase set that came with 10 pieces of delicious nigiri! There wasn't a single piece on here that I did not like. Every single nigiri was perfection and for $42 dollars, it's a steal! The quality of the fish was great too, very fresh! I will definitely be coming back to try their other items!

3.5 Stars - I've heard great things about this place and was excited to finally try it out. We came during lunchtime around 11.30 ish. Easy street parking with the meter. I liked the matching chinaware and the Menu was simple. We ordered from the lunch menu. A chriashi and sashimi regular. Both were $23 which also included miso soup and a salad. Chicken karage and sake. When the food arrived, we both had the same type fish, except the rice was separated from the sashimi in the sashimi regular. I expected more variety in my Chirashi, such as tomago, pickles, ebi etc. instead my Chirashi had salmon, tuna and sliced hamach. Might be different in the evening. Overall, the fish was decent. Staff were not very verbal compared to other Japanese eateries, not even a Goodbye or Thank you, when we left. Would try other places next time.

    Vivian L.

Went here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and there was no wait :) my friend got the chirashi & I got the 10 piece omakase and, WOW, it was delicious! The pieces were pretty big and it was fresh and flavorful. Service was good and kept refilling our tea which was nice. There's only street parking. Other than that, I would come back here :)

Ask the Community - Amami Sushi Bistro

Is it noisy when it's busy, or quiet enough for people to hear each other?

It's been a while. I remember that it's not too noisy. But not sure

Are any of the rolls or entrees gluten free? FYI- they do not.

Rice is gluten free so I'd have to say there are plenty of gluten free options. Plus, there's sashimi but I don't know if their fried items like katsu or tempura are- but ask; they are kind and seem very accommodating.

Why don't they offer the omakase on the delivery app menu?

What's the difference between the chirashi lunch special and sashimi lunch special?

Chirashi has chunks of fish and salad with rice. Sashimi has long thin slices of fish and no salad with rice. It seems like you get more fish with the chirashi but it's not as high quality as the sashimi lunch.

    Open for indoor dining?

    yes

Are gloves worn when they are preparing the sushi?

What is the MP for uni nagiri right now?

They even put a spicy sauce on the side of one of the katsu plates when we mentioned that my dad couldn't handle all that haha. This cozy spot mainly focuses on katsu plates, but I like how they had off menu or specials to choose from if you'd like another option. I will say though them katsu plates were just chef's kiss. The meat is pounded thin enough where it's still juicy and tender, but doesn't affect the exterior from being crunchy and a bit flaky. Nothing was dry here yallll! I also like how it already comes with miso soup and salad. Huge fan of that Hamachi Truffle special though. Think of a citrusy flavor from the ponzu, fresh fish, a bit of micro greens, and a thin slice of jalapeño that just ~works~ on a cute wooden spoon that you want to steal I could honestly eat like 5 spoons of this. I'd skip on the calamari as it was kind of skimpy to share with a large group. Only note was that their fried katsu curry was a bit underwhelming with having more slices of carrots than potato! Would love to come back if I am ever in the area.

The restaurant can be a little hidden, but it's pretty easy to find with the instructions they send before your reservation. It's located above Fermentation Lab. Just head up the stairs and you'll find it inside the old Ichi Pub space. The restaurant is small and intimate, with only 9 seats at the counter. When you arrive, walk through the Yuji curtain and check in directly with the chef since there is no host. My biggest concern with set menus is always whether I'll feel satisfied and full afterward, but that was definitely not an issue here. My husband and I were both very satisfied after the meal. Every dish was delicious, and you could really taste the quality of each ingredient. Highlights for me were the bluefin sashimi, which was so buttery and soft that it literally melted in your mouth. The skillfish was rich and decadent, and the citrus and ginger balanced the flavors. The fried fish was another favorite as it reminded me of the savory Japanese rice crackers I loved growing up. Since it's located in Japantown, parking can be challenging. We had to loop around several times looking for street parking and even had two cars take spots we were waiting for, so definitely give yourself extra time before your reservation. I would highly recommend this place! The chef changes the menu periodically based on what's in season, so it's a great excuse to come back and try something new in the future. The location is unusual, as the restaurant is open to the mall, which is a bit disruptive. I came for the 8:30pm seating, but the previous guests were still finishing, so I had to wait until 8:45pm. The staff did not seem very concerned. Bad start. You could also hear the mall cleaning crew during dinner, which was not very pleasant. I ordered the 24-item Mizuho Menu, as did all the other guests. There were 5 guests in total (the restaurant can seat up to 8 people). Here is the menu I was served at the end of May: 1. starter: ama ebi cracker with caviar, pickled lotus root with shaved bonito, crab salad 2. nigiri 4x: isaki, iwana, myabi tai, kanpachi 3. sashimi: chutoro, hotate with caviar, umi masu, sawada 4. nigiri 8x: hirame, suzuki, inada, kurodai, shima aji, kamasu, otoro, aged A5 wagyu, kinmedai 5. hot dish: miso soup with inari and shrimp head, hokkaido uni with marinated ikura, black cod, umi masu with raw yellow egg and caviar 6. dessert: matcha ice cream with strawberry Frankly, the food was excellent. The starter was not very creative, but the nigiri were great. The sashimi selection was very nice, with some fish you do not see as often in omakase menus, such as isaki, iwana, and myabi tai, a kind of tai. Sawada was delicious and is always a good inclusion. We asked for some wasabi and received a small cup of kizami wasabi, a chopped wasabi with a slightly crunchy texture, which was a nice touch. For the nigiri, all the classics of a good omakase were present: otoro, kinmedai, shima aji, uni, hotate, and wagyu. Kamasu was also included, and it is one of my favorite fish. It is also worth noting that they age both their beef and their tuna, including the otoro that was served. A few pieces were torched, maybe a few too many. Overall, the service was not memorable, although chef Ron Au was friendly and nice. The place itself felt a bit questionable, and my expectations were not very high after the beginning of the meal.
