Cute shop which opened several months back, but today was my first time here. I'm glad we had the chance to come by and visit! We ordered the Amapola Latte, which has white chocolate and macadamia nut, and I asked for oat milk. It was creamy, smooth, delectable, probably a little plain for some but I didn't mind it. I like lattes with interesting and rare ingredients, so this was right up my alley. We also had the Vietnamese Coffee, which was not as strong as we would have expected for a Viet Coffee. Still good, but quite muted. The Bacon Quiche was more of an egg omelette than a flaky delicate pastry, but that was okay. My plus one said it was more of an egg bite than a flaky pastry. Good for two to share, and the perfect choice for breakfast. The menu includes different kinds of toast, tuna melt, cheesecake bites, sizable muffins, and several kinds of quiche like tomato, mushroom, and the bacon. I love a good variety of quiche! Unfortunately, a few things made this experience less pleasant... 1) The barista could not answer what was in the bacon quiche. She said she'd need to call the owner to check and then made no attempt or offer to do so. I said I presume there's cheese and bacon, she said yeah, and I asked if there were any nuts - she wasn't sure. I still ordered it, but I do not recommend taking a gamble if you have any sort of allergy or limitation (at least, without the owner present to clarify). 2) Another customer came in for a tuna melt, which they didn't have. It wasn't even 10am yet... and there wasn't much foot traffic. She ended up leaving without ordering. If your interest is that specific, I suggest calling ahead to check before making the journey here. 3) I asked where the forks are and was pointed to a small station off to the side. I went over and ... no forks. I had to ask her again for them. Again, empty shop, not even 10am yet. All in all, a small business with something different to offer, but some room to grow and improve when it comes to service and ambiance. I'm less concerned about the price point, given it's a small business that offers ingredients you don't typically see elsewhere. Plenty of free parking in the lot, though I can imagine parking gets a bit trickier during peak traffic hours. Lastly, this is more of a grab and go spot. The seats aren't comfy and it's rather cramped. You can sit inside or out, though. read more

Amapola on Vanowen is truly a hidden gem I came here with a friend and we both ordered iced matchas along with a strawberry crepe (not pictured because I devoured it immediately and a bit of Nutella ). Everything was absolutely delicious. The café itself is super cute and has such a cozy, welcoming vibe. The owner was incredibly sweet and made the whole experience feel even more special. My matcha was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, just right, with a subtle hint of rose petals that gave it a unique and refreshing twist. Parking can be a bit challenging since the lot is small, but there's usually street parking nearby, so it's manageable. I loved it so much that I even went home and bought the same glasses they use here, yes, it's that aesthetic! Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to again and again. read more

I really wanted to love this place!!!! I love finding new coffee spots around the valley and have tried quite a bit of places and I was so excited when I found Amapola given the good reviews. I was a bit disappointed. I understand the prices have to stay competitive with the market but 10.50 for a matcha plus an extra charge for milk substitute feels outrageous for a small shop! Our drink came out to 11+ There are many other places around the area with slightly lower prices for bigger size options and much better flavor! My review is solely about their hours and lack of availability. I've only had it once and I liked it and since then I haven't been able to have it ever again. I showed up on a Wednesday 7:30 am to find a sign saying no one was in until 1030??? Like please be so forreal. Then after checking Google and Yelp I arrive on a Monday at 9am only to find that the store is completely closed on this day. Yelp and Google still say it's open. I always like to try a place at least twice before I leave a review. The one matcha I had was great however the establishments business practices with time are atrocious. I've tried to have it 3x in 2 weeks with no luck. So if you can actually get here on a day SOMEONE is working or it's actually open you won't be disappointed. I however have been disappointed the last 2 weeks coming here with this place and it's operating hours. read more

Shoutout to Maddy for recommending this spot! Immediately went the next day after she told me lol! This is located in a small parking lot on Vanowen and Balboa (behind Lee's Coffee House). Although the parking is small, it was pretty empty when we went that morning! Seemed like all of the other businesses were closed? We were also the only ones in the cafe too. Greeted by two lovely young ladies, I immediately noticed the cute decor and seating arrangement. They have a few tables and seating outside as well! I ordered an iced Dulce de Leche latte and took a look at their pastry case. Not sure how often they change them but they had quite a bit of everything! None of them have any names or signs so you kind of just have to point and ask what each one is. The everything danish immediately caught my eye so I definitely had to order it, warmed up of course! My bf got a cake slice of something and I cannot remember the flavor name! The drink and pastry didn't take long at all, took some photos outside and took everything home to enjoy. I did take a few bites before driving off and man was it incredible. An everything danish?!? Amapola is the cutest woman owned cafe in Lake Balboa! The staff are super friendly and the space is gorgeous and filled with natural light. Everything we ordered was so good too! Tried Amapola Coffee & Tea and I'm really into it. The Vietnamese coffee is strong and tastes great, and they're super friendly with dogs (they even offered my pup a pup cup). Came back again and ordered my fave Vietnamese coffee but they happened to be out of condensed milk that day, but the owner still worked with me to adjust the drink to my preference and it honestly still came out good. The owner is very nice and welcoming, and will help with any questions you have in order to find the perfect drink for you.
