Large stinky trash can by the front door = tons of flies all through the dining room = woman walking around dining room with a fly swatter during our meal swatting flies right by our table. I hate to say it, but this place was just gross. The bathrooms had an awful sewer/rotten water smell that you could smell 10 feet before going into the restroom. It was obvious that they were desperate to mask the smell because there were three cheapo absorbing air fresheners and a big stand up fan inside. It only made it smell like floral sewer water. There were no toilet paper holders in the stall, so rolls of tp were sitting on the small trash can inside the stall. We spent most of our mealtime waving flies off our table, food, and ourselves. It was a shame that this place was so poorly kept because the food was half way decent, but it grossed me out to think what type of kitchen it was prepared in. This place definitely leaves something to be desired in a restaurant. Just because it's in a small town doesn't mean you should keep this place up the way they do. Shame on Ama! read more

Unfortunately they haven't been able to maintain the quality of food and service they had for years (including the original location) On our last visit we had to chase down our waitress for items on multiple occasions, and noticed the table next to us did the same. Large party gratuity still exists here (IRS laws changed so most places have stopped) even for a table of 5 and a child. Food was pretty good, just not as good as before. It's a great place for our family to meet, as the new location has plenty of room and large tables. This place would do so much better with a proactive staff that hustled a little for their forced gratuity. read more

I worked a booth at The Peddler Show in Bryan / College Station, and Ama's catered the concessions there. I had a tamale, guacamole, and fajita taco there, and all three were outstanding! So good, that Sunday evening after the show ended, I decided to stop at their restaurant for dinner on my way home. If I had only had the food at the Peddler Show, my rating would have been a solid 5. It was fabulous! But the restaurant was more like a 4. That's still great, but was a bit disappointing for me since I was expecting a 5. The steak fajita tacos were almost as good at the restaurant, although I was a bit disappointed that just about anything you wanted to add was an extra $0.35 (unlike at the show). Add 3 or 4 things and it really jacks up the price. The fresh tortilla for the taco was excellent. The guacamole was completely different, and nowhere near as good. The service we received was fine, although the waitress didn't come around quite as often as most places. One of the other tables was noticeably upset about the amount of time it was taking to get their check, and from what I observed, their concerns were justified. Several other employees had been through the dining area while the family was waiting, and I'm surprised that none of them let the server or manager know that the family was upset. I liked the decor of the restaurant, although that's not something that matters one way or the other to me. I don't mind a dive if it has good food. But the decor here is as nice as any chain. Very well done. Although I don't have any plans to return to the area, if I do I will definitely eat there again. I know there's probably a good chance that the service will be slow or inconsistent, but the food is great and that's the most important part to a foodie. :) read more

Service was terrible. First, my friend ordered a margarita on the rocks. She was given what seemed to be a glass of sour mix over ice. It had no lime, no salt, and didn't taste like tequila or anything besides sour mix. It was awful. We each took one sip. My friend politely informed the waitress that the margarita was not good and I concurred, and she ordered something else. The waitress went to the bar and returned to let us know that we still had to pay for the margarita. Seriously? Then we ordered an appetizer. Texas Toothpicks. She checked on us again and we ordered our meal. At least thirty minutes later we inquired about the appetizer, kinda assuming that she had forgotten it, and she said, "Sometimes the appetizer comes out with the meal." Once again... Seriously? We *finally* got the Toothpicks and the meal (at the same time, as our waitress predicted). Had to ask for ranch for the Toothpicks. I ordered the charro beans but got refried. The waitress never offered to clear anything away the entire time we were there. The food was good but not good enough to make up for the terrible customer service. By the way, the owner was in sight most of the time we were there and never came to our table. read more

Street tacos are really great. Had them recommended by some locals and they were a hit. They are a little small so a side would make the plate. Fresh beef, a grilled pepper some cheese and a slice of avocado all wrapped up in a small tortilla. Squeeze the lime and eat up! read more

Ok, came twice. Was staying at the hotel next door and it was convenient. First night, I ordered the fajita nachos. I wound up using the chips in the basket to make my own because the ones they served me on the plate were soaked from the beans and were terribly soggy. So I thought, everyone deserves a second chance. Came back the second night, ordered the steak fajitas. The meat itself was not too bad. Charro beans were pretty good. Everything else was pretty mediocre. Tortillas were like Walmart stuff. The "chile con queso" is actually just melted velveta. So, choose carefully. I used to come to Ama's when I was visiting relatives in Hearne and was always excited to wake up and make a breakfast taco run for the ranch. The tacos were on my top ten breakfast tacos ever. On my most recent visit I ordered 5 breakfast tacos to go and waited there like a bump on a log for 30 minutes and ended up leaving as I couldn't wait any longer. There were only 2 tables in the entire restaurant and I could see the kitchen staff just taking there time with no sense of expediency. Passing through on our way to Houston, the food was fair, the service was extremely slow, the waitress did not know anything about how some of the food on the menu was prepared, she was not very friendly, and the atmosphere was the same as the waitress. The waitress still got her good tip even though she did not really work for it. I will not eat there again. Some of the food was OK, but other items in the menu were deceiving. The house salad was lettuce with water and the tortilla soup had nothing to do with the photo they have in the menu, it was more like can soup. We ordered that as an appetizer and as main course. When we told the waitress she said that after seeing the first one, we should've changed the other one. The refried beans were not good at all. We always get fajitas for two and they come out great every time. This is the only place in Hearne we have found with a full bar, and their margaritas are very good. The salsa tends to taste like watered down tomato sauce, but a little salt usually helps. I would love to see them change their salsa recipe since that is a staple. You can also ask for green sauce, which is amazing. It definitely has some heat, so anyone who enjoys spicy food will love it. The service can be slow at times, but the servers are friendly and fun, definitely promoting a family feeling. This is one of our favorite places to eat out and saves us from driving an extra thirty miles to Bryan for a nice restaurant experience. read more

I'm Mexican and I wouldn't recommend it. I've been to many Mexican restaurants and this one is waaaaaayyyyy over priced. My Mexican friends and I hated it here. I came here on a school trip and from the beginning everything sucked. The service was so bad our teachers helped serving us. We ordered some of our things multiple times because they didn't get it the first time. The tip is already included with your bill. If it was up to me I wouldn't have tipped at all. We ordered just fries and it took well over an hour. The fries were not worth it at all. McDonald's fries are 10 times better and they're cheeper. Honestly the one star that I rated was generous. Would highly not recommend at all. The best thing in this place is the ice. read more

I was by myself, waited over 70 minutes for my order, they gave me two tortillas with my fajitas, got up to ask for two more tortillas and waited 15 minutes, when they brought them my food was cold, worst 22 dollars i every spent in a restaurant. They offered me a free margarita but brought it when I was leaving, 3 other tables left, in fact, the manager at the hotel next door where I stayed said two separate couples came in and bought frozen food dishes from the hotel pantry because they could not get serverd at Ana's. We went in the evening and the food was just ok. Nothing special. We make better Enchiladas at home. The service was the poorest that I have ever seen it. I had to take my glass up to the kitchen door to get a refill. Then , I had to get up two times and take our empty chip basket to the kitchen entry to request additional chips and sauce. Our waitress had only 2 tables in the upper area with people and yet she never came back besides the initial order taking and food delivery and to bring tab. Then, they expect a tip.... I do not think it is warranted. As a matter of fact, I cannot recommend dining there.
