My husband and I love staying at the Ambassador Hotel whenever we come to Milwaukee, WI. It is a convenient location really close to downtown, the Rave, American Family Field, Potawatomi Casino, Marquette University, etc. I like the Ambassador Hotel because it's a ritzy, charming, Art Deco, historical hotel built in the 1920s that feels like it's frozen in time, like we are walking straight into the Great Gatsby/Prohibition area. It has remnants of the past like an old historical antique letter box in the front lobby and an old fashion elevator. If it doesn't scare you, this hotel definitely has a very haunted past! The best feature of the Ambassador Hotel is it's free complimentary shuttle service which will take you anywhere in the downtown Milwaukee area that's in close enough radius of hotel 7:30am - midnight daily so you can leave your car parked in the garage or don't have to drive which is very convenient! Their free shuttle service will make your stay more easy and its really great for going to local attractions or even attending a concert right down the street at the Rave when you don't feel like driving! They also have a bar/dining located in the hotel called Gin Rickey's which offers American food/cocktails. They have a little breakfast cafe that serves coffee and pastries. The hotels rooms are different based on the room you book but most are honestly outdated while some rooms are very updated/modern. I have stayed in different rooms but all of them have been very comfortable! I really like the King bed deluxe room or King bed suite which are more modern/updated! I suggest paying for parking in their parking garage which I believe is now $30 because street parking is very limited or the streets near the hotel are sketchy. Holy hell. We've been sitting here about 19 minutes now, haven't gotten a drink or even eye contact from the bartender. For context, there are two other couples seated at the bar and one table of 6 people being tended to by a server. This bartender is an older man named Scott. Scott looks completely lost. We can see him in the back getting yelled at by a manager, she's asking him what's taking so long and what she can do to help. He's throwing his hands in the air and grumbling. Now he's polishing glassware instead of making eye contact with any of us at the bar-top. One couple at the other end just wants to simply close out, but he won't serve any of us. He looks overwhelmed and ashamed. He should be. You're tending to three couples, one of which wants to LEAVE, and you can't handle that. Finally the manager is here serving us. She's sweet. This hotel was okay for 1 night, I like that they had a smart TV, comfortable beds, and spacious rooms. They also have a really good bar with a great whiskey selection. The hotel is really old and it shows. Our room had a cracked window, the carpet was in pretty rough shape, and you can see that that bathrooms are vintage. This was also not the cleanest hotel I've stayed in either. If you are seeing a concert at the Rave across the street, id recommend staying here. If you are in town for business, stay somewhere else. I went to a concert that was across the street so the location was perfect. Finding the parking is tricky. Only one staff person working the front desk and it was the longest wait to check in at a hotel I've experienced in a long time. The person clearly knew their stuff and was busting their hump, but with so many people it took a while. Elevator is old school cool (the whole place is) but very slow. I took the stairs a lot. Room was clean but there was only a quarter roll of toilet paper and no backup roll, so ran out of that and there' was no soap for the sink. There's bathroom was in rough shape and small. Room was comfortable otherwise. Unless I was going to another show so close I'd look elsewhere, personally. read more

The Ambassador hotel is truly you getting what you pay for. While the staff is extremely nice, the hotel needs a lot of work. From hair being in the shower when we got to the room to rust being visible on the pipes, to even the pipe not shutting off after you took off the water. I've had to update my review because The Ambassador has fallen so far from what it once was. I came to Milwaukee for in person appointments and decided to stay overnight because I figured I could just get some remote work done in my room instead of traveling all the way back home overnight. When I am checking in is the first time I hear about the internet being out. I'm told that it should only be a few hours by the man at reception. I don't know anyone's name because nobody was wearing name tags. I left and did some running around. I got in the shuttle, but I got off at one of the other guests stops because it was too loud and boisterous. When I came back after 8:30 I was told that the internet should be back up before 10. I check at 10:30 and they tell me they don't know when it will be back up. I looked at other hotels, but they were now triple the price and I would then be spending more than losing by staying here and not getting my work done. In my room there's a single, dirty drinking glass so I go to reception to ask for a clean one. The guy goes back to the kitchen and proceeds to bring me 2 more dirty glasses. I show him that, he leaves again, and then he comes back with the same 2 glasses but they seem rinsed, but not dried so they're dripping wet. I just take them and wash them in my room. This morning I go to order from the Deco Cafe. My phone was charging, so I call the front desk to see if they can connect me with the cafe. The lady yells at me "What in room dining!?!?" and I tell her that's what it's labeled in the pamphlet. She tries to connect me but it rings back to her so I just ask for the extension and call myself. No answer. I go down to the Cafe and no one is there. I go to the front desk, and then she goes to the Cafe as well, and now the lady is back, saying she was in the bathroom. I go to place my order (I wanted the bagel and lox because it was amazing the last time I was here) but I'm told they don't make that anymore, EVEN THOUGH ITS ON THE MENU ONLINE THEY REFERENCED IN THE PAMPHLET. I'm so disappointed in what this place has become. I don't know if it's the partnership with Wyndham, or the general manager they all kept referring me to who wasn't there, but I'm heartbroken to see this place go downhill. They don't control the neighborhood they're in, but they sure decided to fit right in at this point. The only thing I need to say that should tell you all you need to know is there was a blood stain on the sheet. What kind of blood, I'm not sure. But it doesn't matter because it's just the fact that it was there. There was also an alarm set for 6:00am that went off every 30 minutes. Not sure who set that, but couldn't figure out how to turn it off. On the plus side, we got lots of towels and the pizzas are big. There were 4 mirrors in our room which was nice for a bunch of girls getting ready. That's about it. I wouldn't stay here again. Only for the fact that it was across from The Rave. read more

We are enjoying our stay and we appreciate the discount rate offered to us because we are in town for a course at nearby Marquette University, so only $109 a night for a king. It's a quick 7 block walk to campus, seems like a safe enough area to walk in the morning and early evening. The restaurant appears closed still due to the pandemic, but we were able to walk back to campus for food. Bed is super soft. Room is very big with generous lighting. Bathroom is clean and well-stocked. There is a hair dryer, but no fridge. The lobby smells a little musty, but upstairs in the room everything smells fresh. The front desk staffer is really pleasant, helpful, and hard working!! He was running around helping folks, even loaning our phone chargers, helping with wifi connections, and arranging shuttles. The room was beautiful. Service was not so great. First, the menus for room service was incorrect as on the weekend they serve brunch until 2pm but they don't advertise that anywhere. Then they charged me for parking that i didn't use. I noticed it on the final receipt and was told by Tamara at the front desk that she can't remove it because it's been on there for 2 days (which is how long my stay was) and I should've noticed it based on the pending amount my credit card statement... Which includes Incidentals. When I expressed that there should be something more than just assuming from a credit card pending amount, she basically dismissed it and just said to call tomorrow. read more

From Andy greeting us at the front desk with not just a great positive attitude but with hotel history and recommendations to local eateries. We chose the Fifty for dinner. Andy gave us a coupon for a dessert or cocktail. The Cherries Jubilee was wonderful and was the best finish to a perfect steak. The Ambassador provided complimentary transportation. Our driver Taurus was friendly and a super conversationist. The hotel rate was more then reasonable and the $20 parking fee is reasonable. When we were shuttled everywhere for the price of a van tip. I normally don't take the time to review many things, but our experience was so overwhelming, I felt the need to comment on our great experience. After many years on the road, I learned not to eat at hotel restaurants, but the quality of food and service was so good, we ate all our meals at the hotel. It was awesome! I booked this hotel because I was going to a concert at the Rave. I didn't want to have to deal with Uber or parking so I booked across the road. After I booked my room I found out the Dahmer story. It was a bit creepy knowing that but it makes sense. The hotel looks and feels creepy AF. Pros 1. Location. Didn't have to stand and wait for my Uber driver to find me. When I have gone here in the past I've had to wait forever for my driver. 2. Check out was easy. Cons 1. Location The hotel is located in a shady part of town. Would not stay here unless I was going to a concert at the Rave. 2. Service was bad when checking in. Only one person at the desk and she was helping someone and stepped away from desk. I stood waiting for a while holding all my bags. 3. After the concert there was a long line to catch an elevator. No problem, I'll take the stairs. I wasn't sure where the stairs were so I walked to the desk. 3 people behind the desk engaged in conversation. They saw me come up and they did not stop their conversation until I spoke. Hello! Stop your personal convo while a customer/guest approaches the desk. 4. I was given a ticket for the garage to exit. The $20 for parking would be charged to my room. When inserting the ticket to exit it kept telling me there was no data entry. I was holding up the line until I pressed the intercom button and gave her my room #. Then the gate raised. The Ambassador Hotel Milwaukee is on the other side of Marquette University, away from downtown (which makes the prices a bit lower). I loved the Art Deco decor. The front counter staff were super helpful and friendly. The free shuttle was the highlight for us because they dropped us off and picked us up whenever we called. Definitely remember to tip. A fluke happened one night. The electricity in our room tripped, and we had to wait until the morning for the maintenance guy to flip the switch. It wasn't horrible, but it also could have been dealt with faster. Just beware that the maintenance guy leaves at 11pm. read more

Don't get me wrong, the hotel in itself is really unique. A Gem of Art Decor (think Great Gatsby or Bioshock). From the outside it's an ugly Lego. Before booking, understand that apparently no rooms have a refrigerator or microwave. Also, I looked for a community micro to heat up some pizza late night. Nada. Beware of the surrounding area. Many derelicts roam the area when the sun goes down because the freaks come out at night. To this point I see many photos of broken windows associated with this business. I have a nice car and did not have this experience, although the staff allowed me to keep my car in the 90 minute spots. They are not under surveillance btw. I accidentally left my car unlocked for many hours and still have my stuff. Hey, Dave is one of the shuttle drivers and is knowledgeable of everything local, friendly, and helpful. The meat. It's a cool hotel with a lot of history. Very convenient to the Rave / Eagles Club and Miller Park. The room was fine but it is older and a little rough in areas. The neighborhood is fairly sketchy particularly after dark. THE TOWER OF TERROR Like something straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story, this Milwaukee hotel has some honest-to-god horror attached to it. My girl and I booked through Hotwire after the gods of chance determined that we'd spend a night here on 9/2/18 (the wheel of fate spins, that's how the site works in a nutshell). Seemed nice enough based on photos, and for $65 plus tax it was tough to beat. The surrounding neighborhood isn't great. In fact, it's pretty darn sketchy.....I wouldn't walk around here late at night. Wisconsin Ave is all torn up, so be alert for the hotel's turn-in. Their parking garage is in back. The Ambassador Hotel has been around since the 1920's and looks like it from the outside. The inside has a very classy "Great Gatsby"-esque feel to it, as if time was frozen around the era of Prohibition. Lobby is ornate and has an old school mailbox. I've never seen such cool, creepy elevators in my whole life. For those who've ridden the Twilight Zone drop ride(s) at Disney, these looked EXACTLY like that, complete with antique pull-open doors. Pretty sure the elevators' serial numbers were 001 and 002. Our room was nice, but it didn't have a fridge, microwave, or hair dryer (amenities I've gotten very accustomed to seeing). Bathroom was nice and the bed was comfy, but our sheets had a mysterious brown/dark red stain on them.....blood or feces? Didn't care to find out. We encountered some problems with their parking; the gentleman at the front desk insisted we'd be fine but the machine wouldn't accept our validated mark. It wound up costing $20 anyways, a fee they automatically add to your bill. Mehhhh An important note about the in-room minibar: don't open the door, don't put anything in there, and do NOT under any circumstances touch things you don't wish to buy. The $7 peanuts and $9 gatorade (lol) are guarded by sensors and will automatically charge you, even for moving them a bit. Now here's where things take an extremely dark and completely unexpected turn. ***takes a deep breath*** We stayed the night in Room #607, which has little significance aside from the fact that 30 years ago the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer brutally murdered the first of his 17 Wisconsin victims......directly below us, in Room #507. It was in November of '87, when the Milwaukee Monster drugged, raped, and crushed the chest of a man named Steven Tuomi in this very hotel, later transporting his body out in a large suitcase, after which the part-time cannibal & full-time psychopath dismembered and preserved Tuomi's skull for morbidly perverse reasons. Paranormal investigators and so-called "fans" of Dahmer (who presumably are also very sick in the head) have requested Room #507 and made it the most popular room at The Ambassador Hotel. Apart from the blood spatter, I'd imagine it's remained largely unchanged and is possibly haunted. * TL;DR * Although we never sensed anything unusual, there's no denying that this 90 year old hotel has a sinister past. Between the eerie elevators and the Dahmer incident, staying at the Ambassador Hotel would make for a spectacularly spooky October night. Whatever you do, don't mess with the in-room minibar. Odds are good there might be a severed head in there.....and you'll be charged $40 for moving it. read more

This is a wonderful hotel for both the price point and the decor. A special shout out to Rico who was very helpful at the front desk. The room is clean and well kept. Furniture is not worn. The Hotel bar is more than functional, it's very nice. Secure parking is also nice. Tip: They offer a shuttle on the half-hour to downtown both to drop you off and to pick you up. I found the ambassador online at a great price and booked a reservation for my visits to Milwaukee. The price was pretty competitive. The location is great and even better, they have a shuttle service for most of the day/night everyday that will take pick you up and take you where you want to go. This saved us several Uber trips and money as a result. The drivers were friendly as well. I thought the old time elevators were neat. Our room was clean. They do have a mini in the room if you are feeling like buying a 6 dollar Miller lite in your room. I had to stay here for a work trip. If I paid myself, I would have checked out immediately the first night. When I brought my concerns to the front desk manager, she apologized, agreed these standards are unacceptable, and admitted she could move me to another room but wasn't sure if it would be any cleaner. Are you kidding? So I was told I had no choice really with these circumstances. When I presented my concerns again the second day, I was told my room could be deep cleaned, but not until the next day since housekeeping wasn't available and I needed to be out of the room. This solution wasn't offered to be available to me until my third and final night of this stay...the pictures below are from the first and second nights. The evening of the second night they finally sent an employee up to help clean. You can visibly see how dirty, unhealthy, and unsanitary this space was. When I came back the third day, my room wasn't deep cleaned because "that can't be done when a guest is already checked in", but they offered a new room that I could review if I wanted before moving spaces. This was less than 12 hours before I had to checkout. I left voicemails and emails with the assistant manager and manager since my stay to discuss the experience further and neither have called me back directly, so unfortunately I have to share these frustrations publicly. Very poorly run and clearly customer satisfaction and basic cleanliness standards are not of concern to this establishment. I want others to be aware of what to expect so they can hopefully avoid the experience I encountered. I will never be back here and can say this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. The only positive is the staff in the bar area is very kind and the food was good. Nothing else to share besides a lot of frustration and disappointment. Beware. read more

My stay at the Ambassador Hotel was wonderful. The staff was great, Friendly and accommodating. The only issue I had was that I originally made the reservation at the Ambassador Inn and inadvertently went to the Ambassador Hotel. When I asked what the difference in price between the two was I was told it would only be $35 so I decided to stay at the hotel. Well come to find out it was $35 per day....quite a difference wouldn't you say? Had I been told clearly that the difference was $35 per day, I would have walked across the street and stayed at the Inn. Additionally, the person who checked me in was not very friendly not the type of person you want welcoming guests into your Hotel. The young woman who I spoke with regarding the price difference was Kassandra who was very nice and understanding. I was given a 'free' cup of coffee which of course didn't make up for the extra $105 in my bill but the gesture was appreciated. With the competition for hotel business out there, it's imperative that someone who is friendly and knows how to welcome you is a must. read more

Just got staying at the Ambassador Hotel and it was my first time and I loved it. I really loved how old and antique it was like you are staying in a 1920's or 1930's era hotel that hasn't really changed much from 90 years ago! They did remodel throughout the years multiple times and the floors are beautiful so the entire hotel is not old and antique! The elevator doors are from like back then and it was really weird to get used to how they work because it is something that I have never really encountered or seen before. They got a swinging door that you have to pull open to get into the elevator and push open when you are at the floor to get out! I really liked all the old-antique glass downstairs as well for the women's bathroom. The room I had was #217 and it was pretty small, but very nice with a beautiful bathroom and comfy bed. No hairs laying around or mold in the bathroom and carpet was clean. Definitely not a Days Inn type of hotel! Rooms come with a refrigerator with built in snacks, alcohol and soda, but it is very pricey so I would recommend walking down right down the street 60 feet for that at the gas station on the corner! It was $20 bucks for parking for overnight for 24 hours. Breakfast is served from 6:30am -10:00pm and you get a 25% discount with hotel room key. I had the chocolate chip pancakes for like 11 bucks with a glass of OJ which was delicious! The hotel is almost directly across from The Rave so it is an excellent location for concerts there! Definitely a must for Milwaukee visitors! With The Beatles supposedly staying there in 1964 to Jeffrey Dahmer staying there years ago and murdering his second victim on the 5th floor, this place is definitely an attraction in itself. This old, antique hotel is a gem of Milwaukee and is like stepping back in the 1920's staying there! I highly recommend! This and the Pfister Hotel are the top places to stay at in Milwaukee. I haven't stayed at the Pfister yet, but I am going to and heard a lot of haunting tales about it. The Pfister Hotel is supposedly the oldest hotel in Milwaukee and The Ambassador is the 2nd oldest from what I read and when I talked with the staff! Seriously, avoid this place at all costs! If you're like me, that mark of a Historic Hotel means something. I've stayed in a lot of them and always have had very good experiences. As a matter of fact, I've never really had an issue with any hotel that I've ever visited so this is definitely a first - complaining about a place. First, we arrived about 4:30 pm, tired and exhausted after a long trip only to be told that our room wasn't ready yet. I thought this odd as it was so late in the day, but waited. We finally got into the room 1.5 hours later with our only recompense being "free parking" (usually $20). So, we finally get to the room and now we're tired and hungry so we decide to order room service. There's this big sign about ordering on the tv so, ok, we order through the tv. We wait the 30-40 minutes it said to wait on the confirmation screen and then some. 1.5 hours later, we figure we should probably call only to find out that "tv ordering doesn't work". Why the heck would you tell people specifically to use a service that you know doesn't work!? I go out of my way to stay in independent hotels. I love the historic hotels. I'm willing to pay more to stay at nice places. I wouldn't expect this level of service at a Motel 6. Seriously, stay ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

In a town with some very good choices for beautiful renovated historic elegant hotels, the Ambassador is certainly up there with the best. Hotel room prices vary considerably, so if you want to stay in hotel with history (and maybe haunted) compare prices for the specific dates you need. If location is important, the Ambassador and the Hilton Garden Inn are walking distance to Marquette, the Ambassador alone is walking distance to the Rave (the historic Golden Eagles Ballroom), and the Pabst Mansion. The surrounding area just west of this hotel is low income and high petty crime, so the apparently steep parking prices aren't actually unreasonable. However, legal parking isn't that hard, get on the Internet for nightly free overnight Milwaukee parking passes on weeknights. The area is also well served by the Milwaukee County bus system, Uber/Lyft, and in fair to good weather even downtown Milwaukee is walking distance. If you're staying here I would highly recommend you make the time to visit the Milwaukee Art Museum and peruse the architecture exhibit. read more

Do not come for holiday brunch. It's supposed to go until 3:00pn. They shut it down at 2:35. Ripping people off. This is worst Easter brunch set up in the city. They ran out of 1/2 their Small plates. We have been here 5 times before and this will the last. I should have just thrown $30.00 on ground and gone to McDonald's. Man, I wanted this to be a 5 star review so, so bad. However, it's not. It's more like a 2.45 star review, but I'm being generous and rounding up. First off, it's super art deco-y. If you don't like that, don't come here. The elevators are nice and vintage-y, but are a COMPLETE pain in the ass. In oder to enter the elevator, you have to open a door, and then step into the elevator. I know that doesn't seem like THAT big of a deal, but when you have luggage and a stroller, it's nearly impossible. The door that you have to open is heavy and there's no way you keep it from slamming on you unless you have someone holding it for you. The room that we stayed in a decent size. However, it felt so, so grimy. The safe was spattered with what looked like maple syrup, so we didn't use it. The carpet looked like it hadn't been cleaned EVER. Vacuumed, yes. Cleaned, absolutely not. The bed skirt had a sizeable white stain on it that looked like it could have been mayo, jizz, white out, jizz, bleach, jizz, or even jizz. It looked crusty and like it had been there a while. Also, as strange as this sounds, the phones smelled TERRIBLE. when I called for room service, I was hit in the face by the stench of the phone and came to the conclusion that it had not been wiped down in 15 years. Yuck. Pros: room service is quick and the food is delicious, beds are comfy, located in an area with bars and stuff to do. Idk, I'd be totally fine if we never stayed here again. read more

Really cant believe this place. Wife and I stayed here for a work function. She told me it was a renovated 1930s era hotel that had a reputation for being in a not great neighborhood. I was expecting the worst. First of all, it's not beautiful from the outside, but it is neat and quirky. There is a very cool neon sign over the entrance, I have no idea if it's original (I'd think not, but it's possible, neon signs date back to 1910). Parking is in an adjacent ramp that's free to guests. It was a bit of a pain to walk from the ramp to the entrance in the -30 degree temperatures (this was during that really painfully cold weather) but I imagine it wouldnt have been any better if they'd had a normal lot. The lobby is GORGEOUS. A lot of it is original, down to the marble floors and light fixtures. The areas that have been renovated have been done true to the original decor. I was very impressed. The elevators are probably the worst part of the hotel. They are not original, but they are very old, and small. They groaned and creaked but worked without issue. I have stayed in 1930s area hotels and apartments before, and normally the rooms are very tiny, so again, I was expecting the worst. The rooms are huge and beautiful. Normally fancy hotels have nice lobbies and plain rooms. These rooms have tray ceilings, recessed lighting, etc. Did I mention our room was huge? The bathroom WAS small, pretty sure my elbow was in the sink when I was on the toilet. And the wiring, probably some of it being original, is weird. There's one master switch that turns off ALL the lights and outlets in the room. It took us a while to figure out that there were other light switches and we could turn off the room lights and still have the TV/outlets/bathroom lights on. Every staff member I interacted with (mostly the night staff as I was working until very late) was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. My wife's work events were during the day and she said she encountered a few less than helpful staff members. I asked one of the people that had been helpful to me about it. She said, unlike most hotels, The Ambassador puts their best people on the night shift, since the staff is very limited at night and one person has to be able to handle a lot of things. Smart move. I cant tell you how many unhelpful people I've found at other hotels on the night shift. We got a group rate through the work event which was very reasonable. Looking online, the rates through websites range from $55-120, with most being around $99. Well worth it. We would definitely stay here again. read more
