Amber Flooring installed new hardwood floors in 2 bedrooms and a hallway of my 1,100 square foot- 2 bedroom bungalow, as well as refinished the original hardwood floors in the entryway, living and dining rooms. They were the only company I spoke to who understood how to install new floors in the bedrooms without removing the original baseboards or resorting to using quarter round trim (there was only the original sub-floor under the old wall-to-wall carpet). They undercut the original baseboards, and matched the new floors perfectly to the existing ones, down to every detail. Calvin was extremely kind, responsive and patient with the many questions and concerns I had prior to the work starting. He communicated every step of the process clearly and was always available if I had additional questions. He was very knowledgeable about how to achieve the best aesthetic results allowing me to trust his expertise and the process. The work was done on time, and on budget. I am very particular about small details, and the floors are perfection...I could not be happier with the end results. We had a challenging experience with Amber. We hired them to install oak in the kitchen, then sand, stain and refinish the oak floors in the living room, dining room and kitchen to match. We asked them to use a water based coat, rather than oil. First, their office staff was confusing and often difficult to reach. Each time I called I ended up talking to somebody different. The project director they assigned to us, Mark, seemed competent and knowledgeable, though, so we felt reassured going forward. Each day they came out to do the work, a different crew arrived, so it seem like there was no continuity from one day to the next. For example, the crew that arrived on the second day did not have the key to the house that the crew from the first day had used. Also, my contractor was concerned that they never did a "scrim" but I don't really know what that is. Rather than use a water based coat, they used oil, so we had to scramble to find alternate lodging for a week. The worst part was the quality of the finished product. The dining room and kitchen had tons of bubbles in the top coat. To their credit, when I asked Mark to look at it, he agreed that there were too many bubbles and said they would come out and do a recoat. Unfortunately, after the recoat, there were lots of shiners (bare nailheads) and even several small holes in the floor! We've had such a poor experience with Amber, that I don't trust them to fix it again. So we're just going to wait a few years until we need a new another recoat, and then will go with a different company. read more

Let me say this is the first time in my life I have ever written a Yelp review. Now I understand why this service exists! We hired Amber to install engineered white oak hard wood throughout our house. The estimator, Andrew, showed up on time and was friendly, patient and helpful. However, from then on it was one trial after another. We initially chose a character grade oak that had more texture and contrast. He told us there was no price difference between that and the other oak samples he had shown us. Turned out there was a $750 price difference which may not be a big difference to them but was to us. We had our estimate re-written and then had to choose between three other samples. I made an appointment to come pick them up, showed up on time with my baby and he had given one of the samples away to another client. In the meantime, he almost "lost" our installation dates and then bragged about how he "saved" them from another estimator who tried to give them to his client. Once we had chosen the wood, submitted our contract and paid our deposit we never heard from them again despite several phone and email attempts. No confirmation of payment, no copy of the contract returned to us. It took 3 emails and 2 phone called before I secured a receipt and contract for our records. Days later without any notice a crew showed up to deliver the wood. Our estimator never scheduled anything with us. Luckily I was home but we weren't able to take the wood in because we hadn't moved out and it was to be stored in our baby's room. I was able to schedule another drop off time with the delivery crew independent of our estimator. The crew complained that Andrew does this often. Then the crew showed up on the wrong day to do the work and had not collected our keys despite 4 attempts on my part to arrange key pick up without ever hearing back from Amber again! When the work was done, the crew turned the gas on the stove back on but didn't light the pilot and we came home to a horrible gas leak which could have been a catastrophe. Luckily, everything was fine and all things said and done the guys who did the work were incredibly nice and their attention to detail was phenomenal. They just need to leave gas lines alone! It seems like a poorly run company, stressed out estimators, and absolutely no effective systems of communication set in place. They clearly rely on a strong crew of builders who are probably the lowest on the pay scale but are really the ones doing the work and doing it well. read more

We had several contractors evaluate whether to tear out added flooring and reveal and refinish the original wood from the 1910's. They all said "Not worth the time and effort". People would rather keep piling inferior product on top of beautiful wood than make the effort to refinish. Not Amber Flooring! Tony immediately said "We can do this". Amber flooring removed: carpet, vinyl and bamboo flooring and revealed beautiful fir and oak floors! They were not daunted by the task. The underlying flooring, though not perfect, has lovely character and warmth and could never be replicated in todays world. We couldn't be happier with the result! Tony is very communicative, timely and the staff at Amber Flooring are easy to work with. Tony did make an increase in price adjustment which we felt was excessive, given that he physically saw the job when he gave the original bid. Amber refinished existing Brazilian cherry floors in my house after a kitchen remodel in late 2004. I called them because they offer "dustless sanding," and it really IS. They were excellent. I was worried about the sander scuffing the new cabs, but they took extreme care. Very reasonably priced. The experience was all the better because a couple of months before, I had had carpet replaced on a different floor with Brazilian cherry, and ended up with scuffed walls, banged-up plaster, and badly fitting joints. I used Amber Flooring to refinish my 50 year old oak floors, and they are as good as it gets! I initially chose Amber as they are one of a very few flooring companies certified by Bona to install their Bona Traffic HD water-based urethane coating. This is a great product but needs to be applied just right. Amber was helpful and professional from the beginning to the end of the project. Czarina came to the house to make an estimate and was extremely responsive whenever I called with questions. But most impressive was the expertise of their crews and how meticulous they were in refinishing my floors. My old, worn, scratched up floors are simply beautiful! I would not hesitate to recommend Amber Flooring to anyone in the Berkeley/Oakland area wanting to install or refinish their hardwood floors. read more

We highly recommend Amber, Rody, and their installers. We needed to pull out our old carpets and replace them so we shopped around and Amber had the best price on the super hard bamboo wood that our dogs will not be able to scratch. Rody worked with us to get the floor installed in separate projects and sent us quotes with the prices for each piece of the project clearly marked. The installers were excellent. Our research showed us that Amber is one of the few places that are certified to install the bamboo and they use nails instead of glue to install the wood so it does not smell. Also, I was hesitant to install wood floors because I figured they would creak as I walked through the house. The installers carefully removed our dusty carpet, rolled it up and got it out of the house without letting the dirt spread. They used a shopvac to vacuum up the dust so it did not recirculate around the house. Our house is on stilts with a crawl space and the floor boards under the carpet were bowed. Amber Flooring did a good job putting down laminate on my very uneven floors. I had barn flooring, concrete and even tile that had to be covered and it was all dealt with and as an end result, my floors look great. The only reason it is not a 5 star is that they seemed a little busy and that led to two estimates and a couple of small postponements of details, but the met their deadline with just a little trip back to finish off one corner that was difficult. After shopping around in the Bay Area, it became quite obvious that they were one of the few firms with the expertise to repair bamboo flooring. They recommended sanding the entire surface and resealing it 3x to protect the surface. Calvin, one of the adjusters at Amber Flooring, was my contact person. He was great -- friendly, service-minded, and quick to respond - exactly what I needed. He and Mark, the project manager, took care of everything within the 3 day timeline we had set. Very impressed with Amber flooring. Kim was very responsive and helpful and the flooring guys were professional and expert. Their bid was reasonable and the work was done on time. They had to join old and new boards together in our old SF condo and you would never know it. It is seemless! Amber Flooring had refinished a hardwood floor in a bedroom for me several years ago and I liked the result and durability much better than the job by another flooring contractor I had used. This month they refinished an oak floor including a bedroom and a bathroom and it looks fantastic. In the past I had much fine sawdust after having the floor refinished. Amber uses a machine that sucks up the dust, and they draped plastic to shield the other rooms and cabinets. I did not even have to dust when they were through. The crews were professional and very pleasant to deal with, careful about the dogs and keys etc. I plan to use them next time for another area of the house. read more

Amber came highly recommended so I called to get a bid. I have a fancy ADDRESS which I believe is why they came in about 60% higher then I'd expected from our phone conversations; "Zip Code Pricing". In addition, the estimator pushed hard for up-sells of special finishes, bleaches, etc. that I didn't want. Seeing their ridiculous bid, it was back to the phone book to find a different refinisher. Turns out a contractor friend uses them and offered to get me a bid. The bid they gave him was 45% lower for the exact same work. That smelled bad but I understand Contractor Discounts and what not, so I decided to try them. Thus began a 20 month thorn in my side dealing with incompetence, incomplete work, missing parts, missed appointments, outright lies, duplicate-billings and dozens of un-returned phone calls, e-mails and texts. The house was vacant so there were no schedule constraints. The job was to do some small repairs and change the oak floors from black to light brown. They started the job on time but the sanding was so incomplete and un-even that I called to check when they would finish sanding. That stopped the job while we waited for someone from Amber to come check it out. And waited, and waited... They (apparently) came, but never called me back or re-activated the job. They did find time to send an add-on bill for sanding the oak stairs. That would have been OK except a. they had specifically included sanding the stairs in the original bid and b. the work was still incomplete (and quite sloppy). They eventually rescinded that bill without comment. I will skip over the details of the rest of OVER A YEAR of headaches, lies and mostly being ignored as they had been paid 90% of the bid. As it is, they are long gone and many of the details were never fixed. After 40 plus phone calls, texts and e-mails OVER THE NEXT FOURTEEN MONTHS, I finally got the job completed. Completed, but the outcome is fair at best. They did a nice job patching some old damage but other than that, the finish overall is sloppy. There's significant dirt and debris in the finish. The edges are uneven throughout. After nearly a year they finally replaced a heater register they'd lost, filling a hole in my floor but several other registers are still "glued" in with floor finish so I can't clean the ducts. The stairs were never sanded clean and flat or filled, and the old finish is still showing on most of the steps. I've never gotten my key back but after a year of hassle I've given up. Regardless of their reputation, fancy show room and suave salesmen, I'll shop around for ANYONE else the next time I need floor refinished. read more

Amber flooring was a delight to work with. We had to replace the floors in our new house and fix the subfloors. We got 8 quotes from various flooring people and went with Amber in the end. They were on the more costly side of the spectrum, but we chose them because of their quality of communication, detailed plans, and foresight as to which products to use and avoid since we would have a baby living in the space. Noam was always available and quickly responded to all inquiries, even after hours. He made frequent visits to the house to inspect progress. He ended up discounting us since we didn't use all the product that was ordered. Amber sent us many samples so we could figure out exactly what we wanted. The floors look AMAZING! We recently remodeled our house, managing it remotely, while living overseas. Amazingly, most of the project went well (thanks to our fantastic contractor, Troy Construction). Our biggest mistake was contracting the wood floors with Amber Flooring. It was an awful experience. They were anti-customer and extremely confrontational and defensive (and eventually threatening) in their interactions. Lousy communication. Buyer beware (to be clear, it is our fault that we chose them instead of doing better due diligence and locating a better option. We were only in town for a few days). The quality of the install was mediocre (we did not pay "mediocre" prices). We should have never made the assumption that they would act like mensch's with their customers. It started with a visit to their showroom. We said "Here are our approximate dimensions. What would it cost do it with this (we pointed at a sample on the showroom wall that we ultimately did use)?" An extremely reasonable price came back, about half of what it ended up being, but by then we were back overseas and did not have a backup plan. "Are you sure this is what it will cost for the complete project. Everything?" "Yes, this includes everything you need." We left the country and figured we had the floor solved. I came back for a visit and arranged for their estimator to visit our house to measure it. This happened. He told me he could have the quotation ready in a week. It took weeks. And more weeks. Lucky we started very early and were not on a tight schedule We figured the problem was just with the estimator, so we pushed back hard and eventually a quotation came back. The quotation had zero detail. It was much higher than what we had been told in the showroom. At that stage we were just desperate to nail this down because wood floors are not something you can figure out easily remotely. This was our big mistake. We should have pressed them for more detail on what their quotation included (or did not include as we later found out they did consider floorboards to part of delivering a complete floor). We should have asked them for their price per square foot. We should have backed out then. Our fault. All of the signs were right there in front of us. With the initial quotation out of the way, they kept sending us the wrong sample for approval. Over and over again. It became apparent that the problem was not with an individual, but with the organization's project management system. Months were passing. No progress on the floor. The house was in demolition stage. Our original floors were gone. Finally, I had another business trip to San Francisco and managed to take a morning off to visit their showroom and point to the same sample on their wall that we had originally seen half a year earlier. "This one. Just like this." "Oh, that one, okay we'll take care of it, but we'll need to check the price" Another quotation came back, still very high. We finally got the sample. It was the right one. We should have walked away from the deposit we had already put down. We were too deep. We needed floors. Amber went back to the job site and said that the floors were uneven and either they could fix it or our contractor. We chose Amber, of course, since we needed them to be responsible for the total project. The price went up yet again. The installation happened. We asked our contractor to keep an eye on them since we were not back yet. We arrived back. Parts of the floor looked good. Parts of it looked messy. We found out that this was the portion they did on Friday afternoon when the installers were in a rush to get out for the weekend. There was leftover glue and a couple of loose floorboards. There were empty holes next to the walls because they did not install floorboards. We had a big argument with them about this. We did not finish payment because the job was not completed. They came over to the house. We pushed them to fix the problems that they could (we were about to move into the house with a newborn, so we had to accept the poorly installed portion of the floor as is). They replaced the loose board, cleaned up the glue, and offered to install the cheapest lowest quality floorboards out there, if we paid them even more money. We asked our contractors to finish the baseboards and paid Amber everything except for that cost. Their CEO threatened us with a Mechanic's Lien. He sent us nasty threatening emails We paid them. It was a relationship of nine months. Good riddance. read more

We had Amber put in our floors a number of years ago. It was a complete hack job. We had never seen such amateurism; installing cracked boards, filling in the junction between the wall and boards with scraps of odd wood and sticks (I am serious), and spots where the varathane was missing. We had to hire another company (Tulip) to correct all of the mistakes. Run, do not walk away from this company. They are your worst flooring nightmare! read more

I would never use Amber flooring again. They were more interested in getting their job done quickly and cheaply rather than getting it done right. Specifically: 1. The left black sneaker tracks imbedded in the urethane. When I pointed these out to them, they spot sanded a minority of them and patched the urethane. Since we were using reclaimed wood, the spot sand removed the patina at those spots and left light spots on the floor. The urethane "patch" did not match up. 2. The used a type of wood fill that I requested not be used (ugly band-aid color putty). 3. They filled a couple of larger holes with end grain redwood dowel. It looks like a broom handle plug. 4. They failed to sand away some burn marks on part of the floor that was being refinished. (This was a fire rebuild job.) 5. The boards in some rooms are quite uneven. 6. They got urethane all around the bottom of my brand new bathtub. 7. I'm still finding places that they "missed" when I dig into the corners of my house. Some of the errors were fixed, but slowly and without apology after serious complaint. The independent floor guy that we hired when we first bought the house (wish I could remember his name) was much MUCH better. read more

March 16, 2013: Contacted Amber flooring March 16th 2013. Andrew came out to give us an estimate. He was professional and seemed knowledgeable. I was surprised to be told that Amber would not help me find the wood I needed replaced (Balsamo wood). I had to run around to many different hardwood places to try to find the wood I needed. April 29, 2013: I finally found the wood I needed. I contacted Andrew via email on April 29th 2013. I never heard from him even after an email follow up May 5th. May 10th 2013: I wrote to Andrew again May 10th and asked if he had received my email from April 29th. . He said no and that he'd been busy. I resent my email from April 29th to him. May 13th, May 22nd: Called Amber flooring directly, they said they would page Andrew for me. Never heard back from him on May 23th but received a response on May 22nd saying he would get to the quote. May 30th, May 31st: I finally received a quote from him for the flooring on May 30th, 2013. However the quote was missing two things: 1) replacement/painting of baseboards 2) Replacement of plywood (sub flooring). I asked Andrew on May 31st via an email to please resend the quote with the cost of baseboard replacement and plywood replacement. I NEVER heard back from him. This company made me feel like I had to beg for a quote and that only THEIR time was of importance and not mine. After I had made the time to meet with them, send several follow up emails and provide them with an OUTLINE of exactly what I required for the job they STILL got the quote wrong and then never replied with an update quote. I agree with the sentiment of other yelp reviewers that even in these supposed "hard times" it doesn't seem like people really want the work. I would never recommend this company. Family owned or not, if you treat your customers like they should be "greatful" that you even give them the time of day then you don't deseve anyones business. Sometimes Family owned is worse because family members might not be willing to hold each other accountable and to a predefined set of standards. After all its hard to tell "Uncle X" that he needs to show improvement in customer service much less fire him. read more

The sales person assigned to me was uninterested and unhelpful. I drove the long distance to their show room three times to pick up and drop off samples. In turn, he never called me and the couple of times I saw him in person he seemed to be stressed or hassled. Maybe he's overworked or unhappy but it didn't feel good. After a month of no progress I spoke to the office manager and asked for another sales person. He assured me they'd make a change but I never even got a call back, although I called back twice. The solution? I went to Tulip. They were friendly, helped me choose a great option (took the time to steer me away from my initial choices, which were bad!) and did a terrific job on the work. The price was great and everything start to finish took less time than the 4 weeks I spent trekking back and forth to Amber. read more

On the first day of them waxing and doing repairs they showed up to the job site 2 hours late. The first day seemed to go alright except for the fact that they showed late and left early (about 30 minutes late). Day two they once again showed up late about 30 mins late. They then began the floor panel repairs. During the repairs they managed to hammer in decorative nails into the water line. These nails were not even meant to go threw the other end of the floor panel. We told them multiple times before this that they were for looks not use. They then tried to blame it on the other flooring company that put in the floors 3 years ago. We had to call in our plumber for repairs. One of the panels they managed to crack the wood and it was in even. They said that patching it would fix it, it didn't. At the end of the day they told my foreman that they would be back the following day. The next day about 3 hours passed and they didn't show up. We had to call there office to see where they were. They claimed they were done to there manager. They lied once again. They showed up at around 11:30. They spend about a hours hand waxing the floors and they left. Hand waxing the floors leaves a uneven waxing of the floors. When we reviewed it we were ticked off at the huge massive glare on the floor. We had to attempt to try to buff it out by hand but you really need the machine to make it even. They did a horrible job. We will find out next week the other things that they had done poor work on later in the week when cmi does there inspection. I would never recommend them to anyone specially my family. They are far from professional. read more

Had our hardwood floors throughout our house refinished last fall. Would not recommend this company to our neighbors or friends. Chose Amber Flooring thinking that by paying more we would get the top professional results. The experience was frustrating from the start as the salesman would not return my calls confirming we were on the schedule for the following week or giving me guidance on what I needed to do and what to expect by way of preparation. Leaving it to me to guess, hit and miss in my inexperience. Because Amber Flooring said they would need to come in four days straight to do the work, my husband and I took a week's vacation Once we had a look at their work we were disappointed that the floors in the bedrooms were full of bubbles in the varnish; up to 30 percent of one floor having bubbles. Also, there were "shiners," nail heads showing in many places in all the rooms. After checking with our neighbor who retained the key, she informed us that Amber Flooring ended the job a day early. So that explains why it looked unfinished when we finally saw it. They did come back out and for the most part satisfactorily completed the job. We did end up having to pay for additional hotel time so that the floors could dry. I do like the floors now, but the effort to have the work done was just too much trouble and effort. They would be wise to prepare a checklist for the homeowners as, believe me, you are in for a lesson. read more

I am an interior designer in the East Bay and I just had a wonderful experience working with Amber Flooring. I introduced myself to Leti Huerta in the beautiful Amber showroom, explained that I was selected to design a Showcase House room in the Children's Support League's first ever Showcase House (part of their annual Heart of the Home annual spring home tour), and that I'd love to have a temporary wood floor installed by them. I had never worked with Amber before. Leti was enthusiastic, informed, and helpful from the get-go. Within 24 hours, she had emailed the owner (who was out of the country) and had an answer back - they were happy to install a temporary showcase floor in my room - at no expense to me. I am so glad that I had the inspiration to cover the existing white wall to wall carpeting and chose to stop at Amber. Not only was Leti fantastic to work with (very thorough, polite and professional), but their installers who came to measure, install, and then remove the temporary floor, were hard-working, careful, and pleasant young men. I had an unusual request, but they were completely supportive and accomodating. I chose a custom gray stained random-planked rustic French Oak floor - it looked very chic and was flawlessly installed over the existing carpet. They even placed extension cords underneath and carefully pulled them through the quarter-round trim around the edges for me, allowing more flexibility with my lamp placement. And they were very careful to make a smooth transition between the wood floor and existing adjacent carpet, so that I didn't need to worry about the safety of the tour-goers. I cannot be more pleased with my experience with Amber Flooring. I hope to work with them again soon on a client's project because I am confident that they were do a fabulous job and be a pleasure to work with. Five stars!! read more

Beautiful work, but be careful about the dust. We were told that our bedrooms would be safe from dust and piled all of our belongings into them without covering them. Then the doors were left open during part of the job. A layer of dust is covering all of our stuff now. No one offered to compensate me for the additional childcare necessary for me to clean it. Plus be careful about the quote. You need to specify what products they will be using on your floor or else you will get whatever is cheapest. Otherwise, the floors look beautiful. read more

I needed to replace the carpet in a room that the cats trashed. Based on Yelp reviews I drove a few miles down the street to Amber and found it to be a great place. Calvin, an estimator, found a good match to the carpet, I had it installed within the week. The installers were fast and very good. A good value. I couldn't be happier. read more

This company was VERY professional and responsive. Pricing was very reasonable as well. I had a big job to do. 3 bedrooms needed all carpets removed and installation of hardwood flooring. They came completely prepared at exactly the time they said they would. They worked hard and long. Extremely clean and my floors came out gorgeous. I have never been happier. All the guys were great!
