They've lost ! ! ! SERIOUSLY bad fish smell! O.K., So maybe I should know better than to go for sushi on a Sunday (doh!) but the Chinese joint was closed already. Walk across the road to Amberjack and the place smelled like old fish. (plus the vibe was equally unfriendly and all around unpleasant) Because I didn't want to stay there a moment longer than I had to, I got carry out, which when I got home, made my house smell like dead fish, too, until I put $40 worth of bad sushi down the garbage disposal--PLUS a couple of lemons @ a buck a piece to get rid of the odor. This place was good when it opened--always had that fresh ocean scent that is the mark of a passable sushi joint--and I've gone there on and off ever since. But NOW, staff has changed, and it appears to be run by Koreans with poor English skills. The service was bad, they wasted my money, and now I'm eating cereal for dinner. The whole thing was such a buzz kill I seriously thought of calling INS and suggesting a green card check on the staff. I doubt Immigration would find many legal workers. Go back AYOR! For myself, I'd rather eat cold cereal than ever venture into that stink hole again. And they don't take Amex, either. read more

Great for pick up dinner but not for dining for a party larger than two. It's very little, slow service, and customers don't know how to close the door when they leave (and it gets cold!) The presentation of the rolls is not great either but for the price and the convenience, when you don't want to go to Sausalito or the city, is great. I love the spicy tuna rolls and the udon soup is pretty tasty and satisfying. I highly recommend the Misoyaki (if that's how you spell it... aka butter fish). read more

The space is, indeed, small, but we didn't have to wait more than five minutes for a table. Though to be fair, it was only 6:30 or so on a Thursday night. We got four rolls to share, the Tiger maki (eel, shrimp avocado), the Rock-n-Roll, the Rainbow Roll, and a tuna avocado roll. I thought the miso soup was fantastic. And the Rainbow was perfect. Piled high with slices of various tunas, salmon and avocado across the top, this was easily the standout of the bunch. The rolls with the unagi were only so-so, and came off as a little bland compared to the others. But four rolls easily left the two of us feeling quite content, and, for the most part, were fairly priced. Will definitely be back to give some more of the menu a try in the future. read more

This is a small but pleasant sushi/Japanese restaurant near downtown Mill Valley. My experience over 3 visits is that the sushi is the focus--it is nice (fresh, attractive) and quite affordable. Try the deluxe sushi plate (chef's choice) for a great selection. The other dishes we've tried have not been so successful. Vegetable tempura is mostly sweet potato and onion (on two separate occasions); an udon dish lacked flavor; the chicken teriyaki was nothing special. In contrast, at Sushi Ran the vegetable tempura is both inexpensive and DELISH! The service at Amberjack is pleasant but not exceptional. I cannot rave about this place, but I will return for the sushi. read more

Very small restaurant with maybe 5 tables and a sushi bar. Had a short wait on this rainy night for a party of three. The kitchen area seems bigger than the eating area. Food was good, as good as in San Francisco. Ordered the combo dinner - una don over rice, with miso soup and mixed salad. All good. Bill for three people was under $50 so we were happy about that as well. Would eat here again if I was in the area. Only stopped in because other local places had long waits or pricey menus. read more

This place is always empty, and I've always wondered why. Today I found out. I went in for lunch and ordered the salmon. I always order fish lightly cooked and asked for them to prepare it accordingly. The chef then proceeded to lecture me that no restaurant is allowed to lightly cook fish! This, in a sushi restaurant! Apparently it's either raw or overcooked at this restaurant! Judging by his demeanour, I think the chef was a bit overcooked! Where to begin? Really mediocre, semi-hostile service which would be acceptable if the food were better. I don't know what happened to this place -- I ate here about 3 years ago and the sushi seemed pretty middle ground. Ate here tonight and it was a DISASTER! The fish did not seem fresh and was cut incredibly sloppily, even the avocado was not cut correctly, the rice was starchy and the nori was ripped in some places. For the price, this is ludicrous! I ordered a salad expecting a nice miso dressing, etc and instead it was a bunch of mixed greens like you get out of an earthbound farms bag thrown on a plate with a few slices of cucumber for 6 dollars. I've eaten at a lot of sushi places, high and low, and tonight was one of the worst desecrations of the art I've experienced. I mean, you know it's bad when supermarket sushi is superior. Although I have been to amberjack time after time I feel that going thier is somewhat of a hassal it takes such a long time to get a tempura appetizer. But obviously what keeps me coming back is the fantastic assortment of qaulity fish their is no doubt in my mind that they pay close attention to the fish they use. Now back on the note of tempura, although it takes quite awhile I would say that the tempura is thier best dish. My only complaint is that it takes to long and the menu could be bigger. But yet again hats off to the exellent sushi chef and tempura chef! I would recomend this to anyone who is ready for great sushi and great prices.I t is a great place for adults to have a few pieces of sushi and a sake. read more

I was blessed with a spicy tuna roll ( at least I thought it was). The fish was dark and tough and there was no sign of freshness, an no spicy! The rice on everything I ordered was stale and old and they were not very nice. At least the Togo service was quick. read more

As a regular customer at Amberjack for over two years, I came in to eat lunch on Thursday, March 24, 2016. I was unaware that it was close to closing time, and my food was delivered to my table at approximately 1:58 pm. Before I had begun eating, and before I received my check, the waitress walked up to my table at 2:00 sharp and informed me that the restaurant was closed. I was startled, and asked if I needed to take my food to go. She mentioned that I could stay to eat. I ate as quickly as I could and left. Today, March 25, 2016, I called to speak to the manager about what had happened. The same waitress told me the manager was not there, and hung up on me. I called back and asked to speak to the sushi chef, and the waitress said he was busy. When I asked her to take a message to call back she hung up on me again. I called back and asked her why she hung up on me twice. She said she would only take a phone order, and refused to take a message for someone to call me back. As someone who used to be a waitress, I am appalled at this behavior. This is not how a business should treat its customers. read more

I am a regular here. Tonight we ordered our regular, and one of the items was very off. I politely told the waitress, and she told me I was wrong, and that the food was fine. The chef tasted the dish, and agreed it was off- but nobody removed the dish,or asked us what else we might. They were not honest, not respectful, and not accommodating at all. I love sushi. I love the weird stuff. You know, the I'm not putting that in my mouth-is it supposed to smell that way-did it just move-kind of esoteric pablum. The kind that grows just a few more hairs on your chest or burns a couple of them out your nose. So, I wasn't happy here. The sushi is safe, sanitized and sterile. Okay, I like the sterile part but BORING. FIrst off, the fish pieces were generous but inconsistent, sometimes the sushi chef must have been feeling expansive and we got hefty pieces of maguro in our nigiri. It was tasty so we had to order more. Second time it was smaller. We dare not order another for fear of needing a pair of toothpicks instead of chopsticks to eat them. The amaebi, was okay but the fried heads were a bit oily and heavy. The sushi rice was so poorly flavored and cooked it detracted from the fish. The rice is so important in this style of cuisine and it was totally bland and dry. The chef must be wasabiphobic because it was not used in putting the sushi together, either. The futomaki would have been helped with the proper rice, the oshitashi was tasty but skimpy. I love uni and wouldn't you know it, they were out. We were there before 6 PM! I love unagi and wouldn't you know it, they had it but were trying to re-enact the basket of fish/5 loaves of bread trick. I believe we got the smallest pieces of eel that is possible to prepare with the unaided eye. They do a bustling take out business which may explain all the fury in the open kitchen. I just wish they would spend some of that energy in the dining room. We were half way through the meal before we realized that the chef was not a deaf mute! Not a friendly bunch, could it be that's because we're not regulars? Well, not planning on changing that status for a long while. read more

Why oh Why do I keep subjecting myself to this place? Because there's nowhere else to go here for sushi. The food is totally mediocre but its the horribly unfriendly service that puts me over the top each time I go there. I've been there about 5 times now and each time I go I swear to myself I wont go back yet I do simply b/c there's no other selection in this part of town. The waitress is so unfriendly and never smiles and rolls her eyes when you ask for things. They're extremely unfriendly with children and make you feel very uncomfortable in general. Best sushi I've found in Mill Valley so far. The fish is so so fresh. We get a sashimi platter and a few rolls. It's great for basic sushi. Highly recommend for takeout as the ambiance is nothing special and it is a tiny spot. read more

Excellent Sushi. Very fresh fish. The only drawback is the small space. There are 4 tables and a small sushi bar. Very casual and very good.

The weather's been so cold that I've been getting the udon - mostly the tofu. I've tried them all and they're hot, delicious, and huge. A great warmer upper! My favorite hand rolls is ebi and avocado - ask for it. We're there about 1x a week and have noticed that the staff have really opened up in a friendly way. the service was an issue. She didnt speak much english & did not read back our order, so I got dishes that I only inquired about. The soft shell crab salad was just a panko crab on some lettuce- no mango chetney like the menu says, not a salad. $9 for a small crab on lettuce was not right. This may be quite possibly the worst quality fish offered in a sushi establishment in the entire world...fish tasted like it had been frozen and thawed at least three times. I am not sure why someone hasn't opened a quality sushi restaurant in mill valley, seems like it would do well. But, this place sadly, is not the one. Great quality fish with a nice selection of saki -- not big but adequate. Communication with servers/chef can sometime be difficult -- they don't seem to be fluent English speakers and are a bit cold in temperament == which may put some people off when it comes to service. But the quality of food is well worth overcoming any communication issues one might have with them. I Live near this place and eat here often, best sushi in town for sure (my favorite place in Marin too). read more

Been going there for years and my wife and I will never step foot in there or recommend anyone go there again after tonight's experience. The waitress who consistently wears a sour puss, had the gall to attempt to sneak a charge in on the bill. I noticed it didn't add up correctly and asked to see the itemized bill once again. When double checking the bill I realized i was correct that the total amount was not the total sum of what was listed on the hand written itemized bill. She then fessed up since she was now busted and told me that the additional money was charged because I accidentally broke an already chipped up 4 inch square plate that I could buy on any corner on Clement street for 50 cents or less brand new and much nicer. If charging a customer for breaking a small 50 cent plate is their policy isn't bad enough, trying to sneak it in on the bill is even worse. My Wife's office is only a few doors down and she has always recommended that clients go there when they ask for a recommendation or are seeking a place to grab a bite. As of tonight, she will highly advise her clients to stay away from Amerjack's. This is why businesses fail, stupid policies and actions like this, to people who have been loyal customers for years and brought them so much business. I am sad and shocked but felt the need to share this. read more
