My first thought was: this is going to be horrible! But honestly, it wasn't that bad. It was my first time at this theater and I don't think I would have come here if not for the reviews about how the renovations actually made this place nicer. There are ticket kiosks inside and out to purchase tickets for any shows they have playing at the moment. When buying your ticket, you get to choose your seat inside the theater as well. Then the concession stand is right up front with quite a bit of selection of your usual movie theater goodies. Also, on the opposite side of the regular concession is the bar area where you could purchase adult beverage but it seemed like they open at 3pm so if you're seeing an earlier show, you might be out of luck. They have soda machines with more options than other movie theaters. I actually thought they were really cool! You do have to get your own drinks and butter your own popcorn, etc. The bad part that I've noticed is that the place isn't insulated well enough that you can hear the other movie playing in the other room. Otherwise, the seating was comfortable. They have reclining chairs that were very spacious, the carpeting looked brand new but did need some cleaning (crumbs everywhere), they put letters on the aisle and numbers on the seats so it is convenient to find your seat. Other than that, it wasn't an unpleasant experience. I would come back here again to see a matinée since it's quite reasonable in price and close to home. read more

I went with my son to this theater to see SpiderMan into the Spiderverse a week after it opened. I'm a member of the AMC A-list so I had already gotten the tickets needed and just printed out what was required on entry. Headed over to concessions where I met the surliest teenage employee who asked what we wanted, and then proceeded to check us out. I showed him the AMC $5 gift card I had in the Stubs app and he didn't know how to run it, so told me I couldn't use it. I was like, ask someone how, I want to use this before it expires. He said he couldn't use it because he didn't have a scanner to use on the QR code and I was like, are you kidding me? Just type in the numbers if you don't have a scanner. He reluctantly left to find someone to help him and a young lady came back and took care of it immediately. Because he'd been such a jerk I said, so now you know how and he just gave me a death stare. He got our popcorn and drink cups (they have that do-it-yourself Coke machine that jams everyone up in waiting - great idea, AMC) and I took the popcorn and headed over to the bar. I asked the bartender for a Blue Moon and he got it, but he overfilled it and it spilled everywhere. I saw no one from management anywhere in the lobby area but surely they have supervision somewhere, right? To keep an eye on the staff who apparently aren't trained to do anything. We make it to our seats and I settle in, ready to see this when a man comes up the aisle with a BABY on his shoulder. Like a 6 month old baby who can sit up, clap, etc. He sits in the seat NEXT TO ME and has the baby on his lap. This is not a docile baby, this is an active baby that speaks, loudly, and I'm like I just wanted to see this movie, why me? There are those who would point out that this movie is animated and could be considered for kids only and I would counter I have no problem with a child of an age that can be reasoned with and would not wander around in the seat, grabbing my drink and not being corrected by the man who brought her. This baby is not at all the demographic for this movie, which would need a child that could understand the themes and the actions of the characters in order to enjoy the show. In the meantime, the baby's mother and another girl have come in and sat next to them so now the baby can roam by crawling over four seats and heading for the drink and candy I have in my area. I am so wanting to turn around and give the dad the stink eye but I don't know the violence threshold of the area I'm in and I don't feel like getting killed over a movie. Instead to talking to them, after the baby took my drink for the 3rd time I told my son, I'm either moving or going off on them and that might backfire on me. So luckily there were other seats free so I sat down a row ahead and all the way down from them. I could still hear them talking to the baby and yucking it up from time to time. I'm pretty upset about this situation but I don't want to leave in case they feel I'm engaging them in anything, so I have seen lots of tweets from AMC on Twitter, so I get on Twitter and send a text that someone from management needs to come in this auditorium and take care of this situation in the Empire 7 with the baby. No response, of course. When the movie ends and I have not enjoyed one second of it with everything going on, I go into the lobby and it is 100 percent empty. The concession is shut down, no one in the ticketing area, NO ONE IS THERE. I even kind of speak loudly to say, hello, anyone here. I have never seen an AMC with people in several theaters that is completely shut down before any movies have ended. Very spooky. I leave and get a notification that another AMC name on Twitter has answered me by private message and I read the message that basically they will take care of the situation and they want to send me two free passes to see the movie again. They send those via snail mail and there is a card from the manager of the Empire 7. She states that she was there when I was yelling for someone but couldn't respond. Then she proceeds to say that she saw the man and woman with the baby in the hallway outside the theater and didn't say anything to them. The leadership here at this theater is seriously flawed. Since this place was renovated, it's been my go-to. I like the reserved seats, which means I don't have to arrive 45-60 minutes early for popular movies just to get a decent seat. The reclining seats are nice, and there is enough room between rows of seats that, if you had to go to the restroom during the movie, it's a minimal impact to the people in your row. At most, they may have to pull their feet back just a bit. My service has been quick and friendly so far. They could stand to keep up with the bathrooms a bit more when it's busy. read more

Of all the AMC locations in St. Louis this one is probably the most well maintained. The West Olive one is atrocious. Last I checked, the St. Charles one had glass blocking my view in an attempt to keep people from falling. The sound proofing at the Esquire is always a problem. You can hear every movie playing through the walls and the people in the lobby talking. The prices can be so high that I'll drive to the AMC Classic at Chesterfield Mall when I have an AMC gift card burning a hole in my pocket. All I want is perfect picture and sound which is why I go to the Hi-Pointe Theatre any chance I get. read more

Really! The best movie going experience I ever had! Since I've discovered this place, I try to watch all the movies I watch here including the star wars opener in December '15 :) They have very comfortable fully reclining seats here and very clean too. The theaters are in a great location, the parking is good, they have generic movie theater food as well as a good bar with craft beer, cocktails, and mediocre wine selection. read more

The best AMC I have ever been to. Esquire combines new technology with old school look and feel. The building was retrofitted into a modern movie theater with seven screens. The seats are super huge lunge chairs that you can easily fall asleep in. Its the perfect theater to bring a date as many of the seats can be converted into love seats. With many eating options in the surrounding area this is the perfect dinner and a movie spot. read more

I've worked for AMC before and I currently manage in the food industry. It's pretty disappointing to see an environment where most of the employees are on their phones and the managers do nothing about it. I watched a guest come right up to the concession stand and surprise an employee who was too engrossed in his phone to notice. Also, a few of the employees have air pods in their ears. I understand on slow days that there isn't a lot to do, but there were dirty counters and floors that could have been addressed. There's no reason a place should look dirty when the employees have nothing to do but stand around. From a food safety concern, there were employees eating popcorn behind the line and leaning on food surfaces. I come here for movies all the time and I've never seen anything quite this bad. I never leave negative yelp reviews but I thought that this work culture needed to be addressed. read more

Once again I am disappointed by the experience at this theater. The renovation was very nice but it's starting to look terrible again. The theater was a mess that had not been cleaned between showings. Both online ticket kiosks are broken requiring you to stand in a long line with people who are there to choose their seats and not just pick up your tickets. The concession Employees and the usher staff are all unfriendly and rude. And the downstairs bathroom is about the dirtiest thing I've ever seen. Hadn't gone to the movies in a long time and was pleasantly surprised that the seats felt like home! Loungers are in their theaters, screens are bigger. The ticket prices weren't bad. Very comfy seating! Beware - you need to buy tickets ahead of time online because it's reserved seating. You can buy them in the lobby but the line gets backed up because it takes longer than other movie theaters due to the assigned seats. Additionally, the lobby area where you buy your tickets is super small. So when a crowd gathers because the line is long, it gets very crowded and very loud! You add in the fact that a lot of movie-goers here seem to be young and rambunctious and it can be stressful and annoying. They have police/security there, so things shouldn't get out of hand, but it can seem very chaotic and disorganized. read more

This is probably my favorite theater in StLouis! The seats are so comfortable. I usually bring a blanket to get extra cozy. Its nice to be able to lay back and be 100% comfortable. I almost cant go to any regular theater anymore. The only downfall is the afternoon shows are not that much cheaper than the evening shows. It is only cheaper by like a dollar. The 5-6 dollar tickets are usually for shows before 11am. Another nice thing is you have to be accompanied by a parent if you are under 18 so theres usually not a bunch of kids running around at night, however I have been to a couple R rated movies where people brought a bunch of children who would be making noises (Super annoying) I love how they have a nice variety of food including mozzarella sticks, burgers, etc.. They also have a bar! I personally have not had a drink here, only because I dont want to be trying to watch a movie and either being A.) drunk, or B.) needing to go pee a million times. read more

I went to see the new Halloween movie yesterday. The movie was great, but the theater was super dirty. All the trash cans were overflowing and there was trash on the floor everywhere you looked. The men's bathroom needed to be cleaned and floors were soaked. A female in our party found the women's restroom was in dire need of cleaning and was lacking toilet paper in most stalls. During the movie some other customers got into an argument about seats, then a worker came in to diffuse the situation but was standing in front of everyone blocking the view of the screen and not to mention talking loudly, so it was hard to hear the movie. The workers at the concession were great. They served us promptly and were very friendly. I don't plan on ever going back to this theater unless they put some effort into keeping it clean. read more

I love what the Esquire did during its renovation. The place is so much better than it used to be. My favorite part of the new Esquire are the seats. They are amazing. I am 6'5" so I really appreciate the extra legroom. The seats recline and the leg rests come up as well. Also, seats are assigned when tickets are purchased so you can pick wherever you want to sit. I have been here twice since it reopened but I haven't had a chance to view a movie in the big theatre. Nevertheless, my experience in the side screens has been good. My favorite part about my two visits is that I didn't have any of that talking during the movies that was so prevalent at the old Esquire. I am glad the Esquire and Hi-Pointe are in my neighborhood. read more

I applaud AMC for the Esquire renovation! What was once one of my most-dreaded theaters to see a movie in has now been moved up the list to one of the coolest. I love all of the self-serve options that keep the lines moving. There are kiosks outside and inside where you can purchase your own tickets. Tickets come as reserve seating, so no fighting for a spot when you get inside. They also have a station with the new Coke machines where you can mix a thousand combinations of soda flavors. Nice, but I can see how this could become a bottleneck because the area is kind of cramped. There is also a station to butter your own popcorn. All stuff that keeps the line flowing and everybody satisfied. You view movies on big, fluffy reclining chairs that, not only provide a comfy viewing experience, but also kind of section you off from others. I like it a lot - the only problem is that I couldn't figure out where to put my purse and coat. They joined me in the big fluffy chair. No biggy. Unlike other theaters, you aren't paying more for this cool viewing experience. Matinee tickets only cost us $7 each. Esquire will be added back to my rotation of city movie theater options. I highly recommend that you check it out. read more

Since the renovation, everything is 100x better. I am a big fan of the newer reclining seats and assigned seating. This is my new "go-to" theater based on location and upgrades. I have been ordering tickets online and picking my seat before showing up- this keeps me at home as long as possible, and not waiting to be first in line to get a "good" seat. Wow was i impressed when I walked into this theater! Not only was the theater huge and spacious but the big, cozy reclining chairs are amazing!!! Using a button on the side of the chair you move your chair to make it how you like it! Whether that's almost laying flat, feet out and back straight, or normal seating - you get to pick! Also, if you're into cuddling during a movie... This is the theater for you. You can turn your seat into a small couch if you want by lifting the arm rest :) Also, did I mention the matinee showing was about 5 bucks? Such a great deal! In all honesty im not much of a fan of this theater. Even with all the recent upgrade to the seating and new bar option, it's not my preferred AMC. This theater has small theater rooms so it seems to sell out quick or the only seats available are the ones no one really care for. I'm a random movie goer so this theater doesn't meet my flexibility. The workers here are really young and not as engaging so the customer service here is mediocre at best. I don't like that you can always hear the movie in the theater next door. They really can improve or upgrade the sound proofing. On the plus side, I did find that the concession counter carried healthier options for snacks and the theater and men's restroom was clean. read more

If I could give this theater negative 5 stars I absolutely would. My friend and I tried to go to the West Olive location but unfortunately the movie that we wanted to see was sold out. We decided to go to the Esquire. I was a little hesitant to go to the Esquire because from what I've seen the West Olive location is a lot nicer. However, we wanted to see the movie regardless. We purchased tickets online just in case the movie was going to be sold out. We ended up getting to the theater about 40 minutes early, the attendant scanned our bar code for the physical paper tickets. We purchased snacks and sat in our assigned seats for the remaining 30 minutes to wait for the show. About 15 minutes before the movie was the about to start 2 young ladies approached my friend and I and accused us of being in their seats. We showed them our ticket stubs and sure enough we have the exact same seats. We assumed that the theater had perhaps oversold tickets. They of course ran to the manager as well as another employee and accused us of stealing their seats. We showed everyone our tickets subs again and once again and verified that we were in the correct seats for the correct movie. One of the employees looked at the tickets again and said that the person gave us tickets for the wrong day. However it was the correct movie the correct seats and the correct time and that they would simply give us different seats. Which was confusing to me since the theater was completely sold out. So I don't know what they expected my friend and I to sit on the floor or what exactly. At this point I have a manager in front of me, an employee, and 2 of the girls that had purchase similar tickets. Data cited to cause a scene in humiliate me and my friend to the point where we decided to walk out in the hallway to speak with the manager. The manager rudely told me that it was not his fault and that he didn't know what we expected him to do. I told him that he needed to give me a refund immediately for humiliating me and my friend in the middle of a crowded theater and that we still needed to be seated elsewhere. He aggressively took my card from my hand, came back 5 minutes later, handed me back my card. Said " here's your refund" and stormed off. I have never been so humiliated and disrespected. The manager treated us as if we were thieves who try to sneak into the movie theater. I don't think I will ever patronize an AMC theater again after this evening. read more

Literally was almost killed tonight seeing Bohemian Rhapsody. The geniuses running this theater thought it would be a great idea to have the carpets cleaned with a gasoline motor vehicle WHILE THE MOVIES WERE STILL PLAYING. Gassed our entire theater with carbon monoxide. We had to run out of the theater, gasping for air. My eyes are burning, my girlfriend is having trouble breathing and I'm very upset that someone was NOT educated enough to know that this is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. I will be calling corporate tomorrow at first light. You cannot do this to people, I'm very concerned for my health and the public safety of this establishment. read more

Ok so this review is coming from a persion that grew up in RMH and has seen 90% of his movies at this theatre. The neighborhood kids and I used to bike up here for $3.25 matinees in the summer several times a week. The place really went down hill when I went away for college (2003 - 2007) and was in dire need of a refresh. I was pleasantly surprised to drive by it on a prior visit to down and see it boarded up for renovations. I was almost reticent to see a movie there because of what my past view of the place was. But I am glad that I was forced into it due to the convenience of the time of the movie. The front has been replaced by automated machines that seemed to not be working when I was there, but I ordered on fandango so already had my tickets printed. The concesssion stand looks great and has a wide variety of options not typical of a movie theatre. There is a bar now and the sode fountain machines seem to be self served. Now lets talk about the seats. ALL theatres yes ALL theatres now have what seems to me to be lie flat business class seats. Wow!!!!!!!! I have never had a movie experience quite like that. read more

Best movie experience I've had in my life and that's all because of the recliner seats. Comfortable and spacious, plus you can lift up the armrest if you want to snuggle with your partner- as I did with my hubby. The reclining function is really cool as you can set which angle you want to lie down. We watched the latest Fast & Furious and it was an enjoyable experience for me all because of the seats. Two tips: 1) For a busy night like Friday or Saturday, order your tickets ahead of time from fandango to save yourself the headache of waiting in line when it's super busy 2) Ladies- the line to the restrooms is ALWAYS long. If you go upstairs, there's one bathroom for women (and another for men). You can thank me later. read more

Saw Quiet Place 2 here this past weekend and they had tbt volume in the theater next to us turned up so high that we could hear music, dialogue, the whole nine yards from the neighboring moving. It totally ruined the experience of Quiet Place 2 which depends on the quiet to build suspense. I've been to this theater a number of times- overall it's a nice theater, reclining seats, etc. Could be cleaner. Mostly just really disappointed in how it kind of ruined our viewing experience of an otherwise good movie. read more

They made some excellent upgrades here! Now they have big comfy recliners, you select your seat before you go so no need to worry about arriving super early to fight for a good seat, and it's clean and nice looking. The food is normal movie food: good and pricey. I like that you can get any type of cheese sprinkle for your popcorn in an individual cup so you can take it with you and sprinkle it on every few layers of popcorn, not just on the top! YUM. They also have those crazy coke machines where you can add flavors so that's fun. Great job Esquire! read more

I agree with the masses who say how great this theater is after the renovation. The reserved seating and comfortable chairs are awesome, but the part most people forget to mention is that even with these extra amenities the price is still comparable to other theaters. This means more value for the same price. One drawback is that the front area is often kind of a cluster(mess). The box office ticket taking area can be chaotic at times as movie goers choose their own reserved seats from a map and then have to make their way through the rest of the line. This causes some congestion that is annoying, even moreso if you're running late for your show already. Call this a warning or constructive criticism, it's not bad enough for me take a star away from this 5 star worthy theater. read more

I have not been to The Esquire in several years and was so surprised to sit in the most comfortable recliner chair ever. This theater had totally spoiled me for all others! This is our go-to theater in the theater. They usually have a good selection of recent movies. The seats are assigned- you pick yours when you buy your tickets. And the seats recline and have great cup holders! Great renovation. They also have the Coke machines that you get to customize your soda, which I like. The only theater I like better than the Esquire is the Hi-Pointe right down the street. However, the Esquire has more movies that I want to see and the Hi-Pointe doesn't always. read more

Like many others I know, I had to stop going to this location several years ago due to a build-up of crappy clientele that liked ruining a good time for others (i.e. yelling at the screen, general rowdiness, etc.). It killed me, because we live barely a mile down Clayton from the location. But this is now a totally different environment - THANK BABY JESUS. Some friends tipped me off about the renovation recently and told me it was great. The big part which caught my ear was the ability to reserve seats online. How awesome is that? Take away all of the stress and rushing-around, worrying that you'll wind up in the front row or in some situation where you can't even seat a few people next to one another. We purchased tixs for the 10:15 PM showing of Jurassic World on it's first weekend of release and walked into the theater right at 10:15 (because we could). The marked and well-lit floors easily guide you to your aisle and row. And then when you get to your seats... Lovely. Really clean and comfy, wide leather, with cup holders built-in to the armrests. And a fast, silent motor which lets you recline FLAT in your seat (or anywhere in-between, if you prefer). They have a nice little bar where you can purchase drinks or large beers. Self-service digital touch-screen soda fountains which must have had 30 flavors to mix. A small popcorn was $6.00 and was plenty for the two of us. They even have a few self-service stations which let you add your own butter just to your liking. I'm so excited to have this place back in such great, modern form. Only reason I haven't given them 5 stars at this point is I've only been back once. It almost seems too good to be true, so I'll be looking forward to another visit soon. read more

I like how it is not uncommon to find theaters that sell alcoholic beverages in St Louis. Going to the movie has quickly become one of my favorite things to do in the city. The renovation (circa 2014) of Esquire 7 is the breath of fresh hair my little neighborhood needed. All comfortable reclining chairs, movable armrests, possibility to select your seats beforehand when purchasing tickets online...etc. Man, this place got it ALL the way right. Prices are the same as other theaters. I really appreciate the luxury feel without the price tag. $6 for wine or beer I believe, I can dig it! PS: Like at any theater, there is a certain crowd depending on the movie. Although I recognize it is not the easiest task to predict the type of crowd, based on my experience, I would say "noisy, rude and obnoxious" crowds are not a systemic issue at this theater. I have seen a couple of folks here and there getting to the wrong assigned seats but it never caused any major disruption. Just my 2 cents. read more
