First time using the Big D theater and it was very nice. This theater has recently been remodeled and looks much better than it used to. We purchased tickets online at Fandango.com and had no problems getting our printed tickets from the registers at the concession area. However, in my personal opinion, I liked the former method of purchasing tickets from the ticket booth before you enter. I am not sure what the reasoning was for the change, but the lines are SUPER long! Since there are various start times for the 15 different theaters, the line never goes away. This process makes it difficult to get refills if you are already in the theater or in the middle of a movie. We actually went to see the latest version of Stephen King's "IT" on the opening day and only one side of the concession area was open. The theater was very crowded and the lines were very long. I was very disappointed in the concessions. Two regular size bags of popcorn and 2 regular size drinks totaled $29 and some change!!! I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the total!! One bag was stale and 1/3 had unpopped kernels while the other was decent. The annual refillable bucket is my usual purchase, but this year we haven't frequented this theater. Since it's so late in the year, it seems pointless to purchase it now, so we just purchased bags. Food was not good and there was NO ICE in the multi-flavored soft drink machines. Very disappointed in the quality of concessions at this price!! We enjoyed the movie theaters, sound, cleanliness, and various locations of restrooms (which were clean and well stocked) were all good. I have been to this theater many times and have never had bad concessions, but for the money I would expect nothing short of perfect. Very disappointed in this portion of my visit. read more

The concession area was TRASHED. Absolutely no effort by the staff or "management" to keep this place clean. No ice in all 3 drink machines and very limited selection on soda after paying almost 7 dollars for a drink. AMC should really make an effort to hire staff who care about their customers and how the place looks. Probably won't be returning for this reason. read more

Do not, I repeat, Do not go to a night time movie here, especially on a week end. This place is nothing more than a babysitter for parents to drop their ill mannered rugrats off at so they won't have to deal with them for a while. The last movie I saw here, people talked during the entire movie. I don't understand, you or somebody has paid $10 each for the tickets and you want to talk the whole time??!?? Add that to the cell phones going off plus the crying kids and it was one miserable night. I guess nobody knows how to behave in public anymore or has any manners. The kid that was the so called "manager" acted like he was to afraid to do anything. He said he could not give me a refund only some more free tickets. Yeah, right . Like I want to come back to this Chuck E Cheese of a move theater ever again! I had to contact the corporate office the next day for a refund. I will NEVER go back to this theater again. Tried to come to an 11 o'clock movie showed up 10-15 min after to miss the previews and they were closed no one helped me and my friend and no one answered the phone to let us in. Found out they closed at 11 but they should still keep the doors open or atleast someone at the front desk to tell customers they are closed. read more

Honestly this is the worst cinema I have ever been to. After waiting 20 minutes in a line that was going nowhere I would have missed the entire film before being able to purchase tickets!! This set up is so wrong, and about 50 years our of date! read more

This theater has a nice food selection with Freestyle Coke machine and uses Fandango for easy online ticket ordering, but the theater itself seems to be older and not an experience that one expects from an AMC Theater. The theater I was in had stiff, non-reclining seats, and my particular seat was broken in such a way that if I leaned forward slightly, the entire seat would nearly dump me into the floor. In addition, the staff neglected to expose the entire screen when the movie starts, as is custom. It was nearly thirty minutes into the movie when it was finally fixed, which was certainly distracting. I would hesitate on returning to this theater if such lack of care is shown for the opening day of a new Marvel movie, of all things. read more

Never again. Went to see The Mule on Christmas Day, went into the Theater and there were no seats left. Why would you sell tickets to a sold out theater. Didn't see the movie watched another movie instead since we had already purchased drinks & popcorn. read more

I have never been more mistreated by a movie theater in my life. After buying tickets online for my daughter and her friend, I received a call that they would not be allowed to enter the movie because my daughter forgot her ID. After calling the theater and confirming her age, they refused to let them in after they had already spent almost 20 dollars on popcorn and a drink alone. Instead of refunding the money, because they said they were not able to do such, they gave them return passes and turned them away. I have never been more infuriated with a movie company in my life. Parents just a heads up, they have no respect for your kids and all they want is your money. Be weary before attending such an establishment owned by AMC. read more

Since AMC took over the Carmike in Hickory, the experience of seeing a movie has soured. They open only one side of concessions, causing long lines and waits. Toilets are out of order, no TP or towels. Today, drink machines were out of opinions AND the popcorn machines were down! You received a receipt for popcorn and required to come back later and wait in yet another long line to actually get some! Something is really wrong with their management! AMC, you're the only game in town. Please, at least try! read more

Very disappointed that they no longer have movies during the day, on weekdays. Usally go to Tuesday for the 5.00 movie and now their first movie is a 4:00 pm. We don't go to night time movies so guess we will have to go to another location. read more

Arriving early for our movie, we decided to check out the Arcade room they had located in the middle of the theater. We only found 2 working games. Not to mention the machines ate our quarters as we tried them out. The soda (Coca Cola) was extremely flat and tasted like they poured soda water over mildew. After paying their $18 tickets, they didnt have any workers to watch you or check your tickets. As we left I wandered if anyone was there to even lock the place up, it was a ghost town. First I'll say the 2 stars is because it was great to order the tickets online and have them sent by text to my daughter's phone. That's about the ONLY good part of their experience. I decided to order my teenager and her friend's tickets online because there was an online deal from the AMC website that said if you buy tickets online for Flatliners during the opening weekend you'd receive a $5 concession gift card to use that day or at a later time. Once my daughter went to the concession stand to show the text with her tickets and get her gift card and concessions the young guy working said "Well I haven't heard anything about that deal so you are NOT getting a $5 gift card and you WILL pay full price for whatever yall are wanting." My daughter started to explain it was on the website and he cut her off and said "I TOLD you you're NOT getting any money off." To make matters worse I called the 828-304-0089 number 15 times (so far) and keep getting a message that says "We are either assisting other customers or you've reached us after hours Please call back at a later time." I'm guessing I'm going to have to drive up to the theater and talk to someone that way because apparently answering the phone is not in ANYONE'S job description. Normally I wouldn't worry about $5 but I don't like that the employee saw 2 young teenagers and just basically said that they were lying and trying to get over on them. My daughter is smart enough that if she was going to try to "get over" on someone she would go big and try to get something for FREE not just $5 off. He had no interest in even looking into what she was saying. So I guess since he said "he hadn't heard about that deal" that means HE is the one that should tighten up his job skills. The theater is great and the convenience of the text message tickets is AMAZING but the customer service SUCKS and they really should learn how to answer the phone. Especially since 1/2 the time you see people standing around just talking and doing nothing. read more

Matinee tickets are as expensive as night/weekend tickets in bigger cities, popcorn was stale-like popped yesterday and left out overnight stale, and chairs were the old red chairs from the 90s. Nothing about this theater is worth the cost of the tickets. read more

Incredibly disappointed in the online ticket purchasing experience for this chain. We paid a $2 per ticket upcharge for each ticket purchased online to avoid the line upon arrival. When we arrived at the theater we still had to wait in line in the ticket/concession stand line and have our tickets printed manually. When then went to enter the theater and were told there was a wait for cleaning. There was small bench that allowed only 3 people to sit down while the others gathered uncomfortably against the wall. Recommend not buying ahead of time. If you go to this theater, plan to have a long wait in the line as the ticket and concession is not broken out separately. Good luck. read more

The Hickory Carmike 15 has an excellent new complex manager who has done a great job improving the theater. He has hired a new staff of teens who take pride in their work. The place is clean. And the Big D theater is a terrific experience! I love this place! read more

Though it's the only movie theater in my area for now - it is seriously overrated and way too expensive. Yes, it looks nice with all the upgrades but the more upgrades we get in this theater the pricier it's going to be for movie goers. The arcade is pretty run down and the lobby doesn't have the best seats in the world. Also? The staff could be friendlier and more helpful than they are. Half the time, only one side of the snack bars in the lobby are open and the other half is void of staff. There's usually only two people at the ticket booths. The bathrooms are gross and I avoid them at all costs. Also, with all the construction going on - the smell of paint and the sound of the workers working on the new theaters is a little distracting and overwhelming. Hickory could do better. read more

The show times on flixter, their website and the boards in the lobby all matched but weren't the actual show times. But it's the only theatre for miles showing new movies so they don't really care because you don't really have options. read more

Went to see Superfly last night and the movie theatre was so nasty. From the front to the theatre. There was garbage all over the floor when u walk in. Not safe,especially for a handicap person. I will say that the reason I am giving a two star rating because for two straight weeks with different cashier's and two different movies the cash register rang up wrong price for the movie last week the cashier recognized this and made the corrections. However the cashier would only say that this was the correct price... Wrong it should have been 5.75 for the matenee price instead she charged us 9.00 each and we are both seniors.. I tried to call the theatre to let the manager know but could not get an answer on the numbers I tried.. so before you go make sure you know the price and let the cashier know..Pull it up on your phone and have it ready.... The bathrooms are horribly maintained, almost every video game in the arcade is broken, and the staff isn't the friendliest.

This visit will be the last one as we keep saying that perhaps it will get better but it never does. We went on a Monday afternoon thinking that without the crowds perhaps the customer service would be better. We were wrong. We were the first waiting in line to buy tickets. There had only been one person behind the counter and she kept trying to help a guy who was trying to get a coupon redeemed. When a second person came out to another register, she came to him and asked him to help her with the guy's problem without even acknowledging that we were still waiting. We then ordered two tickets, two small popcorns, and two waters. When the guy said it was $45, my wife simply asked if that was correct since it seemed high for a matinee. He then proceeds to say we were seniors and should have asked for the senior discount. They obviously have not had any customer training or they just do not care. Sorry for going on so long but needed to get off my chest as it is sad to actually dread going to a place. We are going to stick with the Carolina Theater in downtown Hickory in the future as it is always a good experience there. read more

The place is filthy. Took the family for a matinee and the concession stand looked like it hadn't been cleaned from the previous night. Stuck to all the floors, even the bathroom. The seat was broken down and filthy. Had a dampness about it that made me want to go home and shower. They could also cut down on the ten minutes of Carmike adds after the movie was supposed to start. read more

I usually do not write reviews and I signed up for this just to write a review on this theatre. From the beginning of the movie we noticed a loud crackling sound that took place in heightened parts of audio. It was so loud that the majority of the patrons, including my wife and myself, had to cover our ears. As the more quiet parts of the movie approached the loud crackling dissipated. I thought nothing of it at first. I noticed several people walk out and came back with an employee following behind. The employee waited for the sound to fill the theatre. I saw the employee leave after. The speakers would repeat the loud crackling throughout the movie. It got to the point where I had enough. So I walked out and approached the staff. They were uninterested and in fact rude. I asked for a manager. The manager shrugged and told me that's how it was and they couldn't help it but someone was going to fix it tomorrow. I politely asked for my money back and they did so. I went to get my wife who was still in the movie and was told I needed to wait in the lobby. They said there was only ten minutes left. So I said well you go get my wife then. I waited- and as I was approaching the doors to get her myself the manager walked in and said I could go get her. This ruined the movie for us. They were absolutely inappropriate and unprofessional. This is not a quality theatre. We will not be back and will be telling everyone we know not to waste their time or money there. Just wanted to give anyone who is willing to read this a forewarning of the possible disappointing and unpleasant experience to be had if going there. read more

Drove from Statesville because according to website they had an 11:25AM showing. Waited 20 minutes due to ONE person working (with 18 point of sale stations) and ask for tickets. She said 2:00 showing, no, we wanted 11:25 showing., She said, Oh we cancelled that this morning to have "Church". There was no apology, nothing done to retain business, no manager in sight, just one clueless teenager. NEVER going back, very poorly managed and ran theatre. read more

Movies are usually pretty good here, but the prices are outrageous! The only time the tickets are anywhere near reasonable is during the matinée or the super matinée times which are usually 4-5:30 during which you can expect to stand in a long line. The Big D theater is really pricey as well seeing as how all you're sitting in is a large theater with a bigger screen with 3D capabilities. The screen DOES NOT curve out the way an imax theater screen would either. read more
