Sitting in American Beech, you really feel like you're on the beach. It's so crisp, clean, and beachy-chic. Excellent decor. My friends and I tried several appetizers and entrees. The highlights were the clams, mussels, fried chicken, and pretzel burger. Also, my blueberry mojito was a perfectly muddled treat. The meat in the steak sandwiches had more fat than meat, the beet salad was tasteless, and the lobster salad sandwich was bland -- the roll was so stale, it was like cardboard. Went and had brunch here with my wife. The service was great. Everyone who attended to us was prompt, professional, and actually gave you the impression that they cared about what they were doing. I really enjoyed my food. My wife, who normally doesn't complain, said that what she had was really salty. Out of curiosity I tried it..sure enough she was right. I like salt, and it tasted great, but the shear amount of salt would keep most people from even making it halfway through the meal. Kind of torn on picking a number for this one, because in a world where you can give half stars, American Beech would get 3.5 from me. Good food, cool beer/wine/cockails, high prices, super Hamptons-y atmosphere, kind of weird layout. I've been to just the bar area a few times, and they have made Sterling Square a really cool place to be on a summer night. The courtyard bar area is awesome! I was there around Christmas and they had a plastic igloo out there- super cool! But I don't really like the restaurant part. I grew up on the North Fork and the whole Hamptons/Manhattan-y vibe just isn't my thing. (However, I do LOVE the flamingo wallpaper in the bathroom!) The food was good. I had the impossible burger with onions and truffle fries- YUM. My friends always rave about the spaghetti squash latkes, but I don't think I've ever tried them. After having a perfect day of driving around wineries we decided to swing into Greenport and try out this place. We were seated almost immediately in their cute courtyard section and that was pretty much the peak of our time there. Right off the bat our waiter was something straight out of an SNL skit. He nailed the part of "indifferent mute water", honestly it was almost kind of funny...almost. We ordered spaghetti squash latkes and duck wings to start and before we even had a chance to look at what we wanted for entrees our food was already on the table. I am always concerned when food appears too quickly because it usually means they were made ahead of time and reheated. Which is exactly what had happened here. The duck wings were so dry from being reheated that it was essentially jerky that was covered in overly sweet goo. They could have put that sauce on cardboard and it would have tasted the same. The plate of latkes came out with splatters around it and not in like a Pollack creative way but in a like someone just pulled the latkes from the microwave and haphazardly threw them in a pile of applesauce. And for how hard this restaurant was trying to be like some factory reject of a Miami club you would have thought they would put in just a little bit more effort into the presentation. We got seared sea scallops and the shrimp curry bowl with roasted cauliflower as our entrees. The shrimp curry bowl was one of the most upsetting things i have ever had served to me. The shrimp were over cooked and rubbery, the cauliflower was not roasted but like microwaved or steamed (it had the weirdest khaki color to it, it was really bizarre), there was a pile of lukewarm basmati rice and then a pool of "curry" at the bottom of the bowl. It was like the kitchen had all these ingredients separate a la Chiptole and then when some bozo (us) orders it they just throw it together in a bowl and call it a day. It wouldn't even have mattered if all the ingredients had been simmered in the curry, because the curry was just lacking any real flavor. The seared sea scallops were the least offensive, but even then the croquettes were mushy and the scallops were overcooked and meager in size. We were never asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu (not that we even wanted to), or if we wanted drinks, or if we were enjoying our meal, we just asked for the check and left. We then drove back home and stopped at Wendy's and got a 4 for $4 which turned out to be the real hero of the night. read more

For the hotel we are giving it 5 stars. For the restaurant, 3 stars. Our room was very modern, airy, and it felt different than the average hotel. And it is located in a quaint and quiet small town near the ocean. We liked the bathroom, although it didn't have a shower, and the beds were super comfy. There were a few small details that we overlooked because we were only staying for the night - the handle came off the shower, there wasn't a designated parking lot, there were a few spots on blankets, and some blinds loose on the window sill. It didn't matter though, we were still comfortable there and will likely return someday. As far as the restaurant, we loved the decor and we didn't have to wait at all. After a long day of wine tasting on the North Fork of Long Island, someone from Mattebella Vineyards recommend American Beach for dinner. I'm glad we took the recommendation. American Beach is a beautiful restaurant. It's very airy with lots of windows which allows for diners to gaze into the outdoors. It was a Friday night and we probably got there around 7 PM. The bar was very lively, I overheard it was happy hours, hence the happy, chatting bar goers. We were promptly seated and order cocktails. I ordered their old fashion which was done perfectly with agave vs simple syrup. We started with one of their salads/it was kale, beets and goat cheese. It was a beautiful blend of cheese, a little bit of vinegar, and some secret ingredients. For entrées, we shared the buttermilk fried chicken with honey crust and the steak. I must say the fried buttermilk fried chicken is succulent and a 'must-have' if you ever visit American Beach. The ambience and service was excellent. Had a wonderful Friday meal at American Beech on what I found out was opening week. The atmosphere, decor, food, and drink were all top notch! Walking in, the restaurant feels like a welcoming, cozy square. Outside dining looked inviting, but my date and I opted for an inside table after a drink by the fireplace. The restaurant was bustling, but we were patient and anxious to try the menu. First off, one HAS to order the clams. Maybe two orders... The baked clams had a crisp taste and an interesting texture, breadcrumbs and anchovies methinks. We also ordered the mussels (great dill flavor but not too overwhelming) and calamari (excellent creamy dip on the side). I ordered the cheeseburger, cooked to a perfect medium-rare with savory, sweet, and smoky notes. The pretzel roll was also a nice touch. My date enjoyed her fried chicken, especially the sauce and salad that came with the dish. The pasta and brussels sprouts I saw on a nearby table also looked like winners. Overall, a solid meal and a great way to spend an evening in Greenport after a day in town or on the beach. We absolutely loved it here! Everything about this place was great. The vibe was very cool! First, the hostess (Michelle I believe?) was super accommodating and snagged a wonderful outdoor table for the 2 of us. We ordered the spaghetti squash latkes, tuna tartare, american beech salad, corn, scallops and skirt steak. All items were local wherever possible and we could taste the difference! We liked every dish, but would definitely say the scallops were the best and recommend those. The service was was very good, maybe too much the point that we felt like we were being a bit rushed. But we certainly understand that they were trying to turn over tables before the kitchen closed. Lastly, we loved the outdoor bar. The frozen rose drinks were the best! Shoutout to Cameron who was friendly and took good care of us. All in all, a five star experience! I had a small (under portion) sized pasta and veggie dish for $32.00, a very boring salad for $14.00 and so on. The only members of our group that were satisfied were the kids who had burgers. This restaurant is my new favorite spot in Greenport. My husband and I were in town for the weekend and chose American Beech for our Saturday night dinner and drinks spot. We were instantly drawn in by the atmosphere of this restaurant and the outdoor space. Once we sat down we had great service and tried many items from the menu (wish we could have tried them all!) We started with the Mussels(delicious), then had the Watermelon Heirloom Salad (largest slice of watermelon was huge and the tomatoes were perfect.) For our entrees we ordered the Lobster Roll (large, tons of lobster) and the Beech Burger (perfectly cooked medium, caramelized onions were spot on, best value, crispy chips were awesome). We also had a side of Brussel Sprouts (the aioli sauce is the special touch). We tried a variety of different cocktails...our favorites being the Jalapeno Margarita and Gin Happiness. We ordered 2 beech burgers which were better than First and South, surprisingly ... Also got on order of the short rib hash. Was fantastic. One of us had the omelet that was outstanding too. We waited for about 20 minutes, trying to attract anybody's attention just to get the menus. When our waitress finally arrived, she said she "didn't know we were there"! The food was nothing special and it arrived COLD! I asked to heat it up and waited forever again! The funny thing is -you have to demand bread and every time a bus-boy or a waitress passed by our table - they wanted to remove the bread basket - that they noticed and for that they did have time! Long on attitude...short on service: My wife and I were visiting Greenport for the weekend and made the effort to make a reservation at American Beech several weeks in advance. When we arrived at the appointed time, we were shown to a small table right next to a serving station - it was also in a very crowded area of the restaurant with servers using the area as a pass-through. We asked to be seated at another table and were told that there was no other table available (which was patently untrue as there were a number of table unoccupied in the general area) but that there was a table that was on dessert and we could wait for them to finish. As we had made our own reservation well in advance of the date, and had shown up on time, we saw no reason to have to wait further. The condescending and supercilious hostess could not have been less helpful. When told that the table we were given was not acceptable she actually said "Whether it's a good or a bad table is subjective" - hardly the way to accommodate a customer. She made no effort to attempt to rectify the matter and frankly could have cared less. We took our business elsewhere and enjoyed a lovely dinner at Claudios's Clam Bar. For those visiting Greenport, our advice would be to steer clear of American Beech. It is far from the only game in town - restaurants are plentiful and varied and many do actually seem to care about their customers. While this experience at American Beech was very unpleasant, there were two very positive outcomes: 1.) We enjoyed a lovely meal at Claudio's - wonderful food, great service and unpretentious. 2.) I am a college professor currently teaching a services marketing class - I was able to use my American Beech experience as a textbook case of what NOT to do in the customer service sector :) read more
