The quoted price for a two-head unit with external pump was in line or lower than the competing bids, backed by an extended multi-year warranty as Mitsubishi Diamond Certified installers. Heat pumps installed alongside existing central air is not an uncommon request, but we had a great conversation with Brook on how we might update to a more modern system in the future, given our original(!) furnace's age. Side questions for him aside, we had a thoughtfully sized system outlined and quoted within a day, and scheduled within two weeks. Our experience with the installation was similarly great, with the team arriving promptly as scheduled and taking the care to put on shoe coverings moving through the house. Everyone was polite and efficient, bringing the plan to life and bringing us in early when there were onsite decisions to be made in our unique spaces. When an issue arose on the cooling not blowing as cold as we had expected, they were quick to assist with troubleshooting, and had it fully remediating within the week. Permits are still pending due to the Oakland backlog, but their lead electrician will also be onsite during the inspection process so I have no worries there. While our immediate need during the heat wave this Spring was cooling our living spaces, I have full confidence that whenever we go to multizone heating and cooling, Spot Free will be our go-to experts!

First, the heat pump brand was changed in the quote to one that we did not want (Carrier). We were replacing it due to leakage of carbon monoxide. This is obviously a safety concern for us, but also a peace of mind issue. We had discussed using Carrier at the site visit, but I was adamant to avoid it. Second, Brook mentioned that there was a manufacturer's recall on our existing 1-year old Mitsubishi heat pump (we have 2 zones with 2 separate units) and that we should pay him out of pocket to fix it. I was confused, because we received no information regarding a recall and typical costs associated with a recall are not paid by the customer. Furthermore, we hadn't experienced any issues and we're still within the warranty period from the manufacturer and installer. Brook said he had been processing a lot of recalls on units he installed and Mitsubishi was slow to send parts so it's easier to pay him directly for the repair. I contacted the original installer, who we had a very positive experience with initially, and they said there was no recall. I also looked online and couldn't find any information regarding a recall.

We decided to hire ATLAS for the job: the furnace was old, and the original roof ducting did a lousy job distributing the heat throughout the house. I was always cold even when the heat was "blasting". ATLAS did a thorough and patient analysis of our old system. They decided to double up the ducts to provide more air flow, and they also organized the flow inside the ducts: it worked. Frankly, the final cost was reasonable, considering the benefits I am getting from it. I particularly recommend Nick and Scott who supervised the project: they really looked into the project, then fixed the problem. Plus: the work was clean, and the communication great all along. The technician confirmed that the refrigerant charge was correct and that the system was cooling properly. Based on the diagnosis, the noise appeared to be coming from the compressor. Unfortunately, instead of discussing different repair or replacement options, the conversation immediately shifted to a proposal to replace the outdoor unit and evaporator coil for nearly $12,000. My original goal was to explore whether replacing only the outdoor condenser was a viable option, but that was never meaningfully discussed. I also found the estimate to be at the very high end of the market for a single stage system. I paid a $60 diagnostic fee and was told that it would be credited toward the installation if I decided to move forward. However, the estimate I received did not reflect that credit or mention it anywhere. Overall, I left feeling that the visit was focused more on selling a replacement system than helping me find the most practical and cost effective solution.

Enter Oakland Rooter & Plumbing. Jose, the plumber that came to service my kitchen plumbing, was kind, professional and very skillful. He explained how he was diagnosing the situation and the process of elimination he was going through to get to the bottom of the issue. Nick took care of a persistent shower stall leak and kept our family safe while doing it. We noticed the shower leak a few months after moving into our current home, and had spent hundreds of dollars with several contractors tying to fix it, to no avail. Quotes had ranged from a few hundred to over ten thousand dollars, and I was close to giving up. But my über resilient better half wouldn't - she posted a plea on Next Door and our neighbor and fellow Yelper Chris M., bless his heart, recommended Nick to us. Nick was the antithesis of every experience we'd had before - he was punctual, responsive, respectful and systematic, explaining his process in detail with diagrams and photos. To my delight, he even provided written estimates, including contingencies in case he found the unexpected after demolishing the shower - his initial estimate was between one and two thousand dollars for time and materials. The work began while I was traveling on business, and I started getting regular updates from the missus, every one of which increased my confidence in the man and his work. It became blatantly obvious that here was a man who takes pride in his work. Then came the fateful day when Nick found mold under the shower pan - the way he handled this was exemplary. He treated the situation as a true professional, explaining the situation to my panicked wife (I was still away), sealing the room where the work was being done to keep our young family safe, and employing all the tools of his trade to address the situation. He emailed me a revised estimate which I approved without any hesitation, and completed the work (replacing the rotten materials with new ones, using mold resistant drywall, etc. - see pictures) methodically and completely. The final bill was a bit over three thousand dollars, exactly what he said it would be in his revised estimate - and I appreciated that he did not nickel and dime us for all the little things he did along the way as he delivered a perfect job. Moreover, he did not rush us into paying the full amount, allowing us to do so in a couple of installments. Thank you Nick, for helping us with our leaky shower stall, and for keeping our family safe while doing it. It's professionals like you who renew our faith in the world.

I can't recommend this team strongly enough…read more Jobs that do not go exactly to plan often tell you more about a company than jobs go smoothly, and my project did not go exactly to plan. Everything was perfectly smooth until the install was complete and it was time to fire up the heat pump system - nothing but error codes. Nick and his team spent literal days working with LG (system manufacturer) to trouble shoot the system and LG even sent one of their techs out, who confirmed everything was installed correctly. LG couldn't figure out how to get THEIR OWN SYSTEM working, so Nick and Aaron gave me the option to have them take out the entire system they had just installed and replace it with a comparable system from a different manufacturer (with a higher sticker price) at no extra charge. This very clearly was NOT in the best interest of Swift Heating and Air in that it took them significant extra man-hours and they absorbed the cost difference in equipment, but they wanted to ensure the job got done in a timely fashion and to spec. The swap went flawlessly and Aaron even flew out from the midwest to expedite the additional work. Their communication was fantastic throughout the process and I really appreciate that their first solution was to do the right thing for the customer. It is also worth highlighting that these guys are as professional as they come - they always arrived right on time and cleaned up diligently every afternoon. Keep up the great work, Swift!
