First let me say I found American Performance by way of a prior customer and he raved about this place. Not long after I ended up purchasing an old school and the seller took me, selling me a lemon with an engine that failed 50 miles later! [That's another review that will be coming soon ;)] Bottom line is I found myself in uncharted water and needed an honest and reliable mechanic to help me out. I remembered American Performance and gave them a call. Steve was over the top knowledgeable and took the time to help me understand my options rebuild-vs-crate. It made sense for me to purchase the crate engine and he ended up installing a ZZ502 for me. It's been nothing short of magic since with Zero problems. A few important points of note- * Steve went far beyond what good customer service is. Providing outstanding and frankly refreshing customer service. * I needed help getting my car to his shop and he picked it up and loaded it on his trailer without any hesitation {Same Day!!!}. I mentioned I did not want to leave my car at the shop [I wanted to work on it while the engine was out] and he was glad to return my car to my house while waiting for the engine to be delivered and picked it up again to install the engine once it arrived at his shop. Free of charge! * From the time the engine was received at the shop to the time he installed and gave the BEAST back to me was only 2 days! * Steve is by far the most knowledgeable mechanic I have ever met and is willing to take the time to * After the engine was installed he called me a week later just to check on me and make sure the car was still running and there were no issues. I was getting my 1979 Jeep CJ5 I just bought smogged at the shop right next to Steve's place. During the inspection, the engine just crapped out and refused to start again, leaving me stranded. I popped into Steve's shop and asked if they could take a quick look and let me know if it was a dead battery or something else. Turns out it was "something else". 30 years worth of tinkering with vacuum hoses connected improperly, two fuel pumps trying to push fuel through a clogged fuel filter, two batteries connected to each other in series draining each other and making the alternator work over time, etc. Steve and his guys got to work in the parking lot right then and there and less than 24 hours later I had a new alternator and belt, a properly connected (and largely new) vacuum hose system, batteries that were actually rigged up properly, and overall a car that could start without brake fluid being added to the carburetor. Everyone at the shop was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, honest, straightforward (Steve flat out told me he wanted nothing to do with working on that Jeep - but he couldn't leave me stranded). I would use these guys as my go-to mechanic in a heart beat, but he specializes in muscle cars and that's what he wants to do. If you have one, absolutely trust your car to these guys. Steve and Allen have worked on my muscle cars for several years now. They go above and beyond to help the customer out. For example, yesterday I had an appointment to have my 70 GTX looked at because it was making a racket in the transmission. I get in the car to start it and nothing. I know the battery had a good charge because the lights were working. I called Steve to let him know and he offered to drive over and take a look. Who does that? A mechanic making a house call? Fortunately I'm close by and they showed up 15 minutes later and helped me chase down a broken ignition wire and get it started. They called me a couple hours later and said the problem was the flex plate and it was fixed. They have also sorted out fuel issues on my resto-modded 63 Vette, rebuilt my 6 pack carbs, etc. They even rebuilt the top end on my Challenger T/A after a different shop screwed up the rebuild. 10-16-13 American Performance, wow what a job they did. I have a 1966 Chevelle Super Sport 396 big block that run rough as hell, road like hell and didn't stop very good. Steve diagnosed the trouble for the motor running bad, as the cam was too big for a stock 396 motor. He recommended that we replace with a cam that was closer to a stock cam which would let the motor idle at less RPM. He also said that by changing the cam it would increase vacuum which would activate the power assisted brake unit which wasn't functioning due (o vacuum) to the larger cam. As far as the rough ride the original builder raised the car by putting over size coil spring in which made it ride like a chopped Harley with a ridged frame. Steve suggested replacing all the coils spring, shocks and front lower and upper control arms with Detroit speed equipment. Pete is a great mechanic who did unbelievable detailed work making the car purr and look fantastic! Pete and Steve did great work on a challenging job - Fuel Tank and Radiator on a 67 GS400. Finding the right fuel tank and manufacturing the filler neck was difficult to say the least and it looks beautiful. Then, getting the right radiator to keep the car running cool even in the heat of the Diablo Valley - and it looks cool as hell, too! And because the radiator needed a big new generator to power the new electric fans, they rewired the car - so now not only does the radiator look shiny and new, but the entire engine bay looks awesome! Fantastic work, good & fair prices and they worked extra hard to get my car back to me in time for the long weekend! I have a really nice Bronco - but definitely no thanks to this guy. He took the job (putting a new engine in) and re-doing the electrical. He kept it for over 2 years, constantly putting me off. Giving me every excuse in the world. Mind you, I got all the parts, including the engine delivered and FULLY built. All he had to do was put it in and get the thing running. Something he claimed he was the best at. He sold my old engine out from under me, he lost a ton of my old parts - which as you vintage car guys know, I could have sold. He made a ton of excuses and even cried. Basically, I ended up having the police come by so I could get my Bronco back. I had another shop put it together and get it running. I'm guessing he used to be really good, but something went wrong and now that shop is just a wreck. It took me a year to write this because I wanted to write something useful to the next person instead of just venting my anger. Be very careful. read more

I had an incredibly awful experience with Steve. I went their because my car broke down and someone suggested their and I went to get my car fixed. Steve ended charging someone else's tab, and did not make a report for my car. The employees were not respectful nor professional by any means. Steve offered sexual favors for "help" and was very demeaning towards me. His colleagues weren't much better. I was very offended and extremely upset by this. My boyfriend called their number to talk to Steve and he was not at all respectful, kind, and offered no help. We later found out that another colleague had been reading private messages between Steve and I from his so called "business phone". This company has clearly violated many laws and my privacy to say the least. Who knows how many other guys were reading private messages through Steve's "work phone." If I had the chance I would definitely sue him and their company for fraud, and several other things. I've never been so astonished by incredibly rude and unprofessional people in my life. He continues to try and talk to me, claiming he cares and I had no choice but to block him. He uses people, money, and belittles women. Why stoop to that level? I just got my car back from the car whisperer Mr Steve La Fountaine from American Performance and I could not be more pleased with the work and attention to detail that he showed my car. I had so many issues with the chevelle to the point where selling it was looking pretty good, but when I drove the car from his shop I quickly changed my mind.
