Absolute garbage service. Stood in line for over an hour to check-in and then stood in line again for over 20 minutes waiting for the staff to find my reservation. By no means do I blame the staff for the inconvenience, however I did call a manager once we got checked in; hung up on me twice before taking my call and then essentially spoke over me the entire time and hung up before I could even get a word in. For almost $250 a night, save your money and go literally ANYWHERE else. Absolute trash. read more

My husband and I stayed here twice in the past 6 years during our snowboarding/skiing trips. It's about an hour drive to the ski resorts we like to frequent. Here are some pros/cons: PRO - nice, updated rooms and amenities. Safe, coffee maker, complimentary wi-fi and water bottles in the rooms. Decent buffet, but if you're not a frequent gambler there be prepared to wait in line! They have crab legs now for those who are fans of that. Rooftop heated indoor and outdoor pools that close at 11 pm. If you're a gambler, there are lots of other casinos within walking distance to Ameristar. The little town is pretty neat for sightseeing. Friendly staff. Timberline Grill is pretty good for dinner and Fireside Kitchen is good for breakfast. Complimentary beverages/coffee stationed around the casino--the main one being in the food court. Oh, food court is pricey, but it has pho! Not the best, but it'll do. Starbucks. Nice VIP lounge (food, dessert, drinks). Smoke-free casino. CONS - Windy roads to/from. Drive carefully as some railings are not high enough to stop your car from rolling off the mountains. Parking is horrible on busy days! Because it's a casino where people do not sleep, you do not sleep. Loud drunks at odd hours of the day. (This can be a PRO depending on how you look at it), but the staff chases you down for your ID. We got chased down the escalator once. If you wear your bracelet it'll help, but who wants that crap on your hands (I felt like an underage kid at a club or something). Even though I know they're doing their jobs, I felt like a criminal for some reason being eyed out and chased down every time I walk by a red-jacket staff member. Main lounge/bar is dull/boring--not much "night life" if you're stuck up in the mountains and want to dress up for a night, enjoy good music, and have a drink w/ friends. Disappointing customer service Husbands arranged a girls spa weekend as a Christmas gift with early check in. Rooms weren't ready at 10:30 am as booked and confirmed via phone call day prior so we went to our spa appointments. Rooms weren't ready at 3. Finally got my room at 6 pm after 4 visits to the front desk and very indifferent/insensitive staff that they couldn't get my room ready in a reasonable amount of time. I was told "that's what you get for being too early" despite the early check in notes. All agents were quite aloof to the fact that my room was 2 hrs late to the normal check in time. My spa suite had a broken shower head, torn and missing paint, tv cables hanging out. Compared to my friends room, there was much less care and attention to detail on the appearance and maintenance of my room. Ameristar lost our business on New Year's Eve 2020 due to there unprofessional and only wanting to cater to the elite and premier guest. We first arrived around 7 pm we had to wait in line to get in. We got in was stamped then we decided to go eat at a restaurant just outside the entry line. We had dinner and then went to go to casino floor. Nope, since we were not premier or elite player card holders we needed to get back in line. I questioned why since we had the stamp showing we are clear and that we went to a restaurant in their hotel to eat and now denied access, the excuse was at capacity but when you looked into the gaming area we only observed maybe 50 people. We again question the worth of the stamp if they were not going to honor it. They were rude and could not give me answer about why stamping people to enter but not letting them in. So we took our money to other casinos in Black Hawk and had a great time with no hassles and friendly employees. Ameristar is no longer on our list of visits or preferred casinos to our friends and family. Very disappointing. read more

After exchanging emails and phone calls back and forth with Laurel Thomas. I was invited back for a discounted rate after experiencing an unpleasant stay. Although I didn't understand why I couldn't get a discounted rate for the spa suite when that was the room I have stayed before and had the problems, but Laurel said I would only be able to get the regular room. Upon check in we had the pleasure of meeting Shannon. He was very friendly and had some good recommendation of breakfast places outside of the casinos! He listened to our request of wanting a high floor with a view. It truly makes a worlds difference when the first person you associate yourself with makes you feel welcomed. We got up to our room and the room was spotless clean and the view was amazing! We went down to the WayPost and loved a little late night snack! A little disappointment while at the slots there were no bar tenders walking around asking for drinks? They were only going to the card tables. It's the middle of the night and I can not sleep. I know why now. I'm sleeping on some else's dirty sheets. I pretty much want to throw up. There are food crumbs and hairs in my bed. Luckily there is second bed, but I'm too sleeved out to sleep. It seems clean enough at least I'm not itching from other people's hair and filth. This is on top of the fact that I had to call guest services twice because there was almost no toilet paper in the room- less than a quarter inch and no back up roll. Worst customer service I had ever experience. A lady called Mary and the assistance manager Michelle don't know how to perform their job. I booked 2 rooms 4 nights and one of my rooms was not ready at the time of checking, paid for both rooms at the front desk and I was informed to come back and pick up the keys. When return to pick up the keys they couldn't find my reservation, I was asked to pay again for the room that was already paid upon checking in, they give me the wrong keys, and when I try to complain they have an attitude and making faces. I came here with my Father for his Birthday and spent two nights at this casino hotel in the sky. The hotel is decorated how you might expect in this area... high end rustic Colorado. Rooms are big and comfy and the staff is excellent. What closes the deal on this hotel is everything you need is located at Ameristar. During our visit, the weather was nice so we ventured out to the other hotels and casinos. None of them were of the caliber of Ameristar. The pool on the top floor with spectacular views is breathtaking. There is something here for the entire family. Several dining options, pool for the kids, spa for mom and dad. I love this hotel. The rooms are large and luxurious (and at great rates), and the casino is easily accessible. The circular shape of the casino makes it easy to find your way around, especially after all of those free cocktails. The location is perfect. Several other casinos are a minute's walk away. The staff of both the hotel and the casino are super friendly and helpful (and patient). Winning $100 on a penny machine didn't hurt, either. And to the crazy, belligerent woman in room 1804 on January 17, 2015, I want you to look at yourself. Do you like you? Because I don't like you. You underpaid, lazy asshole. You're a fucking asshole. And I want you to repeat those words to yourself from 2:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. while slamming doors and throwing things, and then you will know what the entire 18th floor had to live through that night. Ameristar used to be my favorite getaway spot. The buffet was excellent and the rooms were very nice. We always played enough to get "free" rooms. I understand why they had to eliminate the buffet, but the Waypost snack bar that replaced it is a big letdown. It seemed more like a Greyhound bus station cafe. The menu looked pretty good, so I ordered the Asian ribs. What I got was the sliced beef that usually comes with a beef and broccoli dish. When I expressed concern, they insisted that my bowl contained Asian ribs that were just cut off the bone. I was hungry, so i ate it. If I wanted ice for my drink, I had to walk past the slot machine bay, to the other side to use the free ice and beverage station. Really? Even the original Waypost cafe had the ice machine in the cafe. The Isle of Capri also eliminated their buffet, but replaced it with a nice, sit-down restaurant. The food and service are reasonable replacements for the buffet. Ameristar should try doing the same. read more

First class service The gym is nice and clean! The pool and outdoor hot tub is a must! We went for my boyfriends birthday in February and it was snowing! His favorite part of the stay was hot tubbing outside in the snow! Nothing better than being warm with snow falling all over the place! Truly a winter wonderland and romance at its finest! Make sure to take your bottle of wine outside with you! The casino is one of a kind...Vegas style and clean, smoke free, drinks are free- coffee, tea and soda stations are located all over the property! The lounge/bar is a nice place to sit by the fireplace and relax! Great music and company! We went in the middle of a snow storm so the hotel was virtually empty! They upgraded our room to a presidential suite that runs $1,500 a night and comped the room for 2 nights!!!! We had a living room, jacuzzi, Vegas style bathroom, fireplace and kitchen in our room! This is the only Vegas style casino in Black Hawk. Poker room $300K Bad Beat draws a lot of players but they don't offer any tournaments. Hotel rooms are nice and the rooftop pool is open air during the summer. Spa is small but clean and relaxing. The buffet is ok, and the deli has decent burgers with fair prices. Table game minimums are high $15 especially on weekends. Golden Gates Casino is outside of main entrance right across the street with 20 poker tables and host daily tournaments 10am, 12pm, 3pm, and 7pm. They also have $5 blackjack tables. read more

Best casino in Blackhawk. Their table limits are higher because they've got the nicest place to play. Everyone wants to be here. I'd say it is better than Vegas just because of the location. The rooms are incredibly nice. I've stayed here three times at least. When we come for a visit, our first meal is here. The only detractor is the slowish drink ladies. They just aren't fast enough, but its because there are so many patrons/players. Parking is very accessible even for those who have mobility issues. I live in Denver and have been to Black Hawk on several occasions, and I feel the Ameristar Casino is one of the nicer ones in the area. Driving from Denver was a quick 52 minute trip, and parking was easy and free. Upon arrival in the Casino, you're immediately greeted by someone that offers assistance to get to where you're going. This of course was followed immediately by the check-in process, which was highly professional, reception staff was well dressed and hospitable, and the surrounding decor was modern and fresh... Definitely a touch of luxurious Vegas. The room was definitely top notch and certainly ranks with the top hotels; the bathroom in fact was very similar to my experience with a JW Marriott! Another top amenity at this hotel is the pool area -- wow! The purpose of this trip was a quick 2-day business conference, and all conference services have also been top notch and are highly recommended: the meeting rooms, buffet food that was provided, bars set-up for special events, etc -- and again, the service staff has been of the highest quality -- all of which is a little surprising in the tiny town of Black Hawk Colorado! My breakfast experience at their "Fireside Kitchen" restaurant was also quite exceptional in all ways -- comfortable and modern decor, cozy fireplace feature, kind and prompt service -- and I custom ordered an egg white omelette with avocado, spinach, mushroom, side of rye toast-- perfection! Biggest complaint however-- Wi-Fi is mentioned everywhere, but I simply cannot get connected and am actually using my cellular phone as a hot-spot to write this review... I just asked someone for assistance, and she said that there are four business conferences happening and that may be the issue -- no excuse, ESPECIALLY with all the business people here. read more

Easier to tell you the positives than all the negatives. I'm 38, it's still Covid days. But When I still have to pay $300/night I expect some quality service. Only positives I can possibly say about the hotel and casino is, having a room gave vip access to get into the casino (no waiting outside in line in the cold), we were able to check in almost an hour early, and there were clean towels and no bedbugs. Another place letting Covid be an excuse for crappy service. No bags in trash cans, no trash can for feminine hygiene in toilet area, no fancy towel shapes or folded toilet paper, no hygiene amenities (in the room, other than soap/shampoo/lotion). Both hotel hot tubs shut down, no room service allowed (you get to wait in line to get back into casino for two of the three available restaurants, one of which is the only one that's open after 10pm (but only until midnight). Fireside Kitchen, who couldn't cook a prime rib without overcooking it, is only one available outside of casino. No complimentary breakfast or coupon book or discounts in the casino for staying at hotel either. In casino, Last call for alcohol at 9:30pm, yet the casino doesn't shut down for any kind of curfew? WTH! And then they wouldn't let us bring our own alcohol into our hotel room (just put it in a backpack or some other bag so not visible). With pregnant person, but the casino was too lazy to turn on a blender or slushy machine (the bartender pretty much said that was all it would take to fix the problem) to make any virgin drinks outside of virgin margarita and bloody Mary. Actually had to go to another casino just to get non-alcoholic drinks. All tables closed and stuck with poor digital "cus who doesn't trust a digital slot machine or craps game to be fair" replacements. Drinks, regardless of alcohol content weren't even plentiful unless you spent the whole time playing poker at the bar, who wouldn't even serve you if you weren't playing. No buffet either, and I've been to a few buffets since Covid, so I know it's doable. Limits on many of the machines were above $1000 for you high rollers though. Altitude something to consider if you get a room on one of the upper floors; we were on 17th, which was an extra 120 to 150 ft higher than casino floor, which is already above 8200ft. So be careful of lack of oxygen. The casino had one entrance with temp and ID checks, and didn't bother to fix the up escalator, so enjoy the 40 or so steps to get back out of the casino to the hotel lobby. Also couldn't get to parking garage from hotel, had to go find different elevators elsewhere in the building to get back to car, so you get to lug your bags around people waiting in line to get into casino. Worst casino experience so far (out of 5). And for clarity, I lost $160 playing there, but eventually found a few slots that allowed me to have a decent amount of fun as I did so. Would absolutely not go back to Ameristar in Blackhawk (even just to gamble), as this is no more than 3 stars place at best, but for $300, it is not worth it, and the hotel and casino laziness was inexcusable. For a visit to the casino, it's fine. It's a pretty large casino and has a Starbucks. The valet is very convenient because it's steps to the casino entrance. The rooftop pool and hot tubs are great features, with a beautiful mountain view. However, I would not recommend staying at the hotel, especially if you're paying. The rooms are not well taken care of and the food is severely lacking. It seems that they don't care about maintaining the rooms. Our room on the 31st floor had terribly stained carpet and curtains. There was a coffee stirrer on the floor. It looked more like a Motel 6 than a "resort." The air conditioning was running the whole time we were there and never got to a lower temperature. The service is not good. We ran out of toilet paper, tissues, and towels, and were unable to get housekeeping to bring more. We called down multiple times, and they just never came. We felt like vagrants because we had to go take toilet paper from the pool bathroom just so we could use the bathroom in our own hotel room. With some TLC and some food improvement, this place would be a wonderful mountain getaway spot, but it's subpar as it stands, and certainly doesn't live up to the St. Charles Ameristar in the St. Louis, MO area. read more

I was very disappointed that more than half the food was old and many hot foods were not very warm. It was 21.99 each they did discount it 3.50 each and all the staff in the buffet we came into contact with were very nice. My experience with the Ameristar is mostly good. The casino is a lot of fun, with great game, and enough people to make it feel alive most nights. They are a little stingy on the drinks, and you really need to work to get one when you are at a table. The hotel isn't quite as good as the casino. The rooms are nice enough and reasonably clean, but we always seem to have a maintenance issue or two (particularly with the shower door, or faucet). Last time we stayed there it was snowing outside, and the Ameristar was experiencing intermittent power failures throughout the entire night. The front desk was incredibly rude when I inquired as to when it might be fixed, because I use a medical device to sleep and it required power. read more

We experienced a culture of entitlement amongst the employees! Todd, the pit boss at Blackjack was not nice even for a moment during our time there-but he was just one of the encounters. No matter what kind of business we are patronizing, t is our opinion that an employee who speaks to its customers in a condescending way should be coached, and if unable to modify the attitude-they should be placed in a non customer service position. When customers find the attitude in multiple areas of a business, it's clearly a culture problem. Ameristar reaks of entitled employees who think they are superior to the patrons-many of them are downright rude and superior. Some were bordering on arrogant. The Restaurants were less than half full, but the hostess said no tables were available.It was clear that staff wanted to go home early rather than accommodate guests. It's Christmas Day, and I get it-but again, see above-the attitude of the employees was palpable. Finally, when the table game rules don't allow the guests even an equal chance of winning at the game of blackjack, who wants to sit down? Players should be able to double on any hand they want but this casino and many others in Blackhawk are greedy and their rules prevent a double except on 9, 10, 11. This shifts the advantage to distinctly the house. With regular rules the house has 3% advantage-with the rules at Ameristar a player is at a 5-6% disadvantage. In summary, if you want to be treated badly by employees, find the restaurants unavailable, and lose lots of your money because you can't even play the game the way it's designed, go ahead and drive from Denver or surrounding areas and come on into Ameristar Casinos. We went to have the champagne brunch and gamble. I love it here. It's beautifully decorated and quiet, even when busy. I would love to stay a night here and partake in spa services. However, I gave it 3 stars because the food at the brunch was average (3 stars; some good and some not so much, but the mimosas were delish!). The other reason I gave 3 stars was because a waitress asked me, while I was gambling, if I wanted a drink. I said I would. 20 minutes later I still hadn't gotten my drink, but another waitress came around and asked me if I wanted a drink. I told her I had already ordered, but still hadn't received my drink. The waitress said that the other waitress went home and she was her replacement. Now, I have no idea why she would take my drink order and then go home, or even take my drink order if she was going home, but I found that a bit aggravating. Writing this review with mixed feelings... Recently went up to Ameristar/Ara Spa for a girls spa day. The great: - LOVED the views from the indoor rooftop pool! Mountain views all around. You feel like you're in a lodge, but in the sky. Indoor and outdoor hot tubs. It was cool to be in the outdoor hot tubs with snow falling around. - Massage was very good! - Loved the special shower with like 8 shower heads, hitting you from all angles. Cool experience! The good: - helpful spa attendants. Helped us order food near the pool side, professional and helpful. - very peaceful and relaxing area. Nice changing room. - nice relaxation room with fireplace, complimentary tea and spa water, fresh fruit and magazines to browse before your spa service. The not so good: - We went up there on a Saturday and there were only ~5 chairs in the ladies hot tub area. We were a group of 4 and there were other people in the hot tub area too. Seating/lounge chairs were quite limited (there weren't enough chairs for us all) so we stayed in the hot tub. - Similar comments about the relaxation room - limited seating. I think there were 6 chairs in that room, and we were a group of 4. Several times we had to double up, with someone sitting on the foot rest since other people were in the room too. Not enough room/chairs, made it a bit less relaxing. - In the ladies hot tub area and relaxation room, we felt like we had to be really quiet and whisper. We didn't want to disturb those around us, but we were also having a girls weekend and we were trying to catch up ourselves. So, that was challenging. The very bad: - We had lunch delivered by the pool side on the top floor. It was cool we could have lunch by the pool, but all of us were VERY DISAPPOINTED by the quality of the lunch. 2 of us ordered the Wedge Salad - basically it was a take out container of 4 wedges of iceberg lettuce, microscopic tomatoes, and a strange salad dressing. NOT worth the money. There was no avocado and maybe 2 pieces of bacon. The Asian salads my 2 other friends got were equally disappointing. We also ordered the chips/ chorizo queso fundido. Chips were not made in house. Not very good. The queso was non-existent. Basically it was a container of green-chili, not at all what we were expecting, and did not come with the avocado/guac per the menu. Lunch was very sub par and bill came to $100 for 4 of us with tip. Pretty expensive salads if you ask me. Don't come here for the food. I do have to say that after we shared our comments about the lackluster lunch, they comped the lunch bill, which was very nice and appreciated. Great gaming floor, for my money (get it?) it's the best in Blackhawk. Good selection of games, solid atmosphere, lots of fun. The restaurant options aren't amazing, but I was pleasantly surprised with our latenight dinner both in terms of taste and affordability. But that's about where the fun stops. We got a room here for my birthday, and while I chose to bite the bullet despite knowing there were alternatives at a better price, I regret it. The rooms are incredibly expensive both for what they are, and considering there are rooms $100 cheaper a 5-minute walk away. Given that and the stingy player card rewards here, I can't see myself choosing Ameristar over any others any time soon. Rooms are super standard, and we had a light out in our water closet right from the get go. That's something housekeeping should've spotted and fixed when they were readying the room for the next guest arrival. I also had the most interesting experience with a particular bartender. My cousin was with us, and while we were sitting at the bar gambling on the video poker machines, he ordered an Arnold Palmer which I watched the dude make - and he put COKE in it - and then tried to charge my cousin $5 even though he was gambling. Later that night before heading to bed, the ladyfriend and I grabbed dessert from one of the only food places still open, and stopped at the bar to grab a pair of cocktails. We're bourbon fans so we ordered a pair of old fashioned's. They looked a little funny but we didn't really worry about it, paid, and left. Upon imbibing fully back in the room, we realized dude just put a maraschino cherry in a mixture of bourbon and orange juice. It was...disgusting. Ok, so this really isn't a fair review. Only based on the gaming, facilities and people. Haven't stayed here but will based on visiting here. So I was bored, my friend and I drove up to Black Hawk and saw a goliath of a building. I mean literally this place is HUGE! Parked and walked in and was in casino heaven! CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! I mean it's new but so nice. All of the employees were friendly and open to answering all questions we had. The security guard told us to check out the hotel which we did. The bell man took us to the 34 story to see the pool and the views.. I mean AWESOME! I can only imagine how nice the rooms are. Its no vegas what so ever, but I'll most def be back and stay here when I come back to Black Hawk. read more

The room at first glance looked nice. However, once I settled in I started noticing the walls were dirty with splatter marks in different places all over the room and the ceiling! So gross. The bathroom shower had strains on hair in the wall and finger prints on the glass door. The picture below is when I dropped my earring off the bed side table, bent down to look for it and realized it rolled under the table... I pulled the side table out and found this absolutely disgusting mess. Never again Ameristar. I wish I had taken more photos of the disastrous room to prove why people shouldn't stay here. read more

They get one star for the friendly staff. Literally every single staff member we spoke to was friendly and helpful. The room was NOT up to expectations. Not clean, furniture was looking grubby and worn and the bed felt like a rock. The cheapest tissues and TP I've ever seen at a hotel. Disappointing for the high price of the room. read more

Great small casino with a feeling of any big casino. Los of slots and tables. The bar was big and service was fast. The meeting rooms were nice and well equipped. The sleeping rooms had great views and were nice. Bed was really comfy. Probably the biggest, cleanest, newest casino in Black Hawk. Most modern as well. read more

Absolutely a disgrace to hospitality and customer service. This organization does not care about the guests that stay here and will absolutely prioritize their "policies" over people. My wife and I booked a room about a month prior to my best friends birthday! We we're super excited to get a night away and celebrate with our friends. Unfortunately, our kids got sick the day before and my wife was unable to go up with us. When I arrived at the front desk, they informed me that I was unable to check into the room because it was under my wife's name, although it was my credit card was on file. I immediately called my wife and had her on the phone with the front desk staff and they told me 10 times in a row, "sorry sir, there absolutely nothing we can do, that's our policy. Your wife has to be here to check in." Even though they clearly understood the situation. My wife even FaceTimed me and had her ID ready... The attitude of the front desk staff was disrespectful and not helpful all. The first lady I spoke with was rude, short, and unwilling to even call another manager since she was the "supervisor." I kept asking, "What CAN we do so I can enjoy my night with my best friend?" And her response every time was "that's our policy, there's nothing we can do." The offered to book me another room under my name, but by that time the rate was another $100 higher than we booked it online a month ago. I didn't understand how I was now going to be forced to pay them more money due to an unexpected personal situation. I still showed up and wanted to use the room, and wasnt asking for anything other than that. The woman then said "Well I can cancel this reservation since you can't use it." And I said "OK" and walked away. I left frustrated and defeated, not knowing what to do. I called my wife back from the lobby and she was reading the fine print on our confirmation that said "any cancellation made within 48 hours will not receive a refund." I then proceeded back to the front desk a few minutes later, and went through the entire thing again with a different "supervisor" and then asked him if I was going to be charged for the room they just cancelled, and he said "yes sir, you WILL be charged for that stay because you cancelled the reservation within 48 hours. THATS OUR POLICY, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO." By this time I was livid, and I said "wow, it seems like you guys are dead set on putting your corporate policies over the people that stay here." He could tell I was pissed, and clearly over their BS. All of the sudden, there was a higher up manager that he was able to come take a look at the situation. He called them to the front desk, and after 10 minutes she strolled up. She never awknowledged me, never said a word to my face, and immediately took her "supervisor" to the back room and they had a discussion behind closed doors. This felt very disrespectful and like I didn't even exist. I was in the dark the whole time, and no one apologized for the circumstances or the fact I was stuck without a room, but was going to be charged anyway... Once he came out from the back room a few minutes later, he somehow found a way to cancel my old reservation, with a refund, and gave me a link to rebook my own room online under my name for the same rate. Easy peasy fix, just took over an hour... I wasn't looking for anything free, I wasn't taking advantage of anyone, but it feels to me the higher level management at Ameristar trains their employees to absolutely put policies over their guests, and clearly doesn't understand they are in the customer service and hospitality industry. I will NEVER stay at the Ameristar in Blackhawk again, and I will gladly take my business to some of the other casinos in the area. I typically visit once a month or so, but this will be the last time I spend money here. I was blown away at how they handled themselves and clearly showed their values when it comes to running their organization. TRASH! read more
