I was a bit dubious of eating at a Mexican restaurant on Maui. However, Amigo's came through. I was happy to see hard to find dishes such as sopes and tortas, and Mexican-style shrimp cocktail which I haven't seen since I lived in Southern CA. I did order the sopes with chicken. The chicken was tender and delicious. There is a small salsa bar that is convenient and it includes pickled jalapeños. The server was not as attentive as she should have been but she was polite. I ordered a margarita took a sip and asked the owner if I could get a beer instead because I didn't like the heavy margarita mix flavor and he replied with "I don't think so, we make our margarita the same". This is possibly the only good Mexican Restaurant on Maui. It's runned by people who actually know how to prepare the foods and serve the foods. It also a self seating restaurant meaning you don't need to wait to be assigned somewhere. The beans were okay but not bad and the rice was good and not bad like other places. The whole restaurant itself when it comes to the interior looks good and actually makes you feel and notice that your eating some authentic Mexican Food and not just feeds with claims. The chips taste kind of burnt but it wasn't a big deal. A plus is that they also have Coca Cola from Mexico which isn't as harmful as the American version. Also the amount of food you get isn't a whole lot, it depends on what you order but overall its good enough for one person. As a person who frequented this restaurant, I will never return! On my last visit (a Saturday), the place was full, but noticed that the customers were not being served! Then I realized that they were very busy accommodating all the "to go"customers, meanwhile leaving those in the restaurant waiting. Our wait was over an hour and threaten to leave, since we had another stop before going home & amazingly the food was brought to our table. While people wait more sales are made on beverages & that's fine for those that want to drink, but not for those of us that are hungry. Amigos is normally one of our favorites for Mexican food. BUT..Tonight we had the fajitas and they were awful. Totally overcooked, dried out and hardly any peppers and onions. We also had to ask the waiter for tortillas. We were with a group of friends and it was a totally disappointing meal. We told this to the waiter and he was very nonchalant about it. I've never had a dining experience quite like this one...I wish I could say that in a good way. After being seated, we waited 20 minutes (no exaggeration) to even be spoken to by our server. We actually ended up having to flag someone down, and it was not even busy. Our waitress ended up being the woman who walked by us 3 times and never even said hi. To follow that up, she got our order wrong but never came back to check on us so we decided to just eat it anyways. We then had to flag her down again to get our bill. Maui has a huge selection of Mexican restaurants to choose from. We selected Amigo's based on good reviews. Came on a Wednesday and ordered the Al Pastor Chimichanga ($10 special). I honestly didn't care for the flavor of the meat. It tasted almost gamey, luckily there was so much cheese that I could manage to swallow it down to camouflage the taste of the pork. It's pretty sad that my kid's cheese quesadilla was the best part of the meal. I would definitely come back to try other menu options. Maybe I just came on an off day. Also service here is slow. They also run specials throughout the week as well, so you can save yourself some money! They even have carne asada fries here. Read as 2.5 stars: We had an early lunch here a day after arriving on the island. We consulted the blue book and since this got an "ONO", we figured we would try it, plus it was close to Costco where we were headed. Seating is outside and there are maybe 8 tables. There is a small salsa bar and a drink machine inside. Daily specials boasted great prices, but the man and I stuck with our plan. I had 2 tacos with black beans and rice and he had a wet burrito with refried beans. The carnitas in one taco was less than average and the tortillas for my tacos seemed a bit stale. My chicken taco was tasty-but still on the same stale-ish tortilla. The one plus side in my meal were the black beans. They were some of the best beans I have ever had-full of flavor and perfectly cooked. The man's wet burrito was big and wet. Full of beans and carne asada. I really don't review often but this needs to be said. If you want good service, go elsewhere. Jennifer was extremely rude to my family and I. She gave my grandma a dirty look when asking what drinks they had, she acted as if the meal came with a drink and up charged us for it as well as my girlfriend wanted a burrito and got rice and beans and sauce for an additional $7 without being told. That wasn't even this issue for me though, whatever my family didn't read the menu great I can see that side but a different server brought our food than the one who took our order and me and my Aunty both got Chimichangas, she got ground beef I got shredded. The lady brings the burrito and says "ground beef" and I pointed to my Aunty but she gave it to me. The original server comes over and tells me "Oh she just got them switched" and I said well she said ground beef when she handed me the burrito and she rolled her eyes and told me to just trust her. She walks to the kitchen and comes back and tells me they added ground beef to both burritos and tells me they will remake mine. I was pissed because she was rude to me when I was asking a clarifying question specifically about that and she didn't even want to help me. So when she came back I asked, "so I was right?" And she rolled her eyes again and went on to tell me how she placed the order correctly and they made it wrong and I went on to say that's not my question, and went on to ask why she was rude to me and couldn't help me when I asked the first time.
