I've been coming here for about 18 years - since I was about 10 - and even though not much has changed, there's a reason: it works. The decor still doesn't feel that dated even after almost 2 decades. Not every single meal is a stand-out, but the menu is extensive and has a lot of options for a lot of different diets. They do breakfast the best, with French Toast that literally melts in your mouth and a fried egg club that is really satisfying. The crab cakes and grilled cheeses (there are many options) are also quite good. But the desserts. This is what they are known for (and they have their own bakery about 10 minutes away). Everything is just a fantastic, utter delight. Cookies that are the perfect mix of soft and hard, exotic napoleons and baklava, mousses in chocolate cups and chocolate-dipped strawberries. Amazing. You just want to try a little bit of everything. The only thing I don't love but can't explain is that sometimes the staff can be a little aloof (the service is just fine but nothing to write home about), but the managers usually stop by to greet you, which adds a nice personal touch. We started at the Herndon location and we're greeted with a frustrated man who did not even want to greet anyone. When we mentioned to another employee how rude he was, she agreed! Turned out she mentioned he was also the General Manager! When I commented that I guess it wouldn't do anything to complain, she even agreed. I know it was a busy day with Mother's Day, but I still didn't expect that kind of treatment. We decided to go to the Vienna location and had one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in Northern Virginia! Great service from being greeted at the door to the Manager checking in and making sure everything was to our satisfaction. It was a completely different experience from the Herndon location and it was definitely worth the drive. Had the chicken omelet with salsa and jalapeños and it was great! If I could, I would give the Amphora diner 4.5 stars. I ate at the Amphora diner for lunch during the week and was seated promptly. The service was on the slow side, but not outrageously so. The Amphora has a large selection of food on the menu and I decided to stick to the basics for my first visit. I ordered the BBQ Cheeseburger with bacon cooked medium with no LTO. My order arrived in a moderate amount of time and the burger was served with fries, coleslaw, and a pickle. The burger was cooked perfectly and was topped with cheese bacon and BBQ sauce; three ingredients for an amazing burger. The fact the burger was cooked properly was a big surprise. Medium seems to mean "kill it again; with fire" to most cooks nowadays. The fries were crispy and seasoned with sea salt, the pickle was a pickle, and I never got to the coleslaw as the burger was 1/3rd of a pound and I was full by the time I finished it. Overall the entire meal was delicious and I'm looking forward to coming back to the Amphora to try some of their other dishes. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants ever. I can't even say how wonderful the food is here. The tender meatloaf, the crispy falafel, and especially that delicious meditteranean pita platter. The whole multicultural breath of the menu suits so many different pallettes. Such a variety! The staff there are also great. What I especially like is how nice the place looks, and the little assortment of desserts such as pies and cakes and cookies at the front. Do not go here if you're an indecisive person! I love this diner. The food is excellent, staff is great, the menu enormous, it is open 24 hours...what more could you ask for? When I am in the DC area i eat 5-7 meals per week at Amphora's. Just had quite possibly the worst serving experience ever. A lot has changed since I came here two years ago. At every point of service the server made errors. The Bloody Mary and Mimosa were given to the wrong people at our table. On top if it, the Mimosa wasn't even the correct one. The side of bacon I ordered was on someone else's main plate, and the server asked me to slide it off onto my plate when it was brought to our table. What? Ordered an omelette with a side of salsa, and had to remind the server to bring it out. Check was brought out before we had a chance to order dessert. Once we managed to order our coconut cream pie, our server brought out the wrong dessert. He went back to correct the order and still managed to bring out the wrong dessert again, and told us that we were wrong. As it turns out, he had brought us banana cream pie (he was actually wrong). Complained to what appeared to be an asst. manager, and nothing was done to correct the situation. But hey, the coffee was hot and promptly refilled (by other servers). read more

Our family eats at Amphora a few times every week and we have been going for years. It is a great place to take out-of-town guests because the menu is so big so there is something for everyone. They serve the whole menu 24-hours a day. I eat a lot of their salmon because they cook it so well in all versions. I also love the soups, salads and dressings. I really like the new menu and the specials are usually just what it says--"special" with a lot of creative dishes. While staying at the Embassy Suites for my son's hockey tournament, we found this diner just down the road. Plenty of parking, and not really crowded. The food was very good with decent sized portions. The servers got a little mixed up with how to split the bills since the boys sat at different tables from the parents...but not really an issue. Will definitely put this on the list of places to go next time I'm in the area and looking for a non-crowded place to get a good meal. read more

Nice 24hr diner that's a bit fancier than your average greasy spoon (think waiters in white coats). Weekday breakfast haunt for that business breakfast that requires a little more formality than one of the many Starbucks in the area. Weekend breakfast crowds are the norm, but with the really large space (3 dining rooms plus a counter) it seems like everyone can fit. Bakery items bely the normal diner goodies in that they taste as good as they look. That's a nice surprise. Lavazza coffee is a nice treat too. For three weeks I have walked by this Dinner telling myself I need to check out Amphora. Today was a good day for comfort food. It's been a month away from the wife and children. Comfort food for today was a Chicken Fried sirloin steak with mashed taters and fresh green beans cooked perfectly. Brewed ice tea and it is fresh. For dessert I wanted Carrot Cake. By looks of all the fresh breads and cakes and pies thought carrot cake would be good. Appeantly all of Amphora's other patrons must enjoy the carrot cake too. So I asked my waitress, Aida, chocolate and lots of chocolate in the cake. Everything is very good. The price to quality Ratio is very fare. Great atmosphere. So I really wanted to give this place a 2.5 but there is no way to do that on Yelp. The french toast was recommended by our waiter but my french toast came out burned. Like all over. It was pretty unappetizing and I am surprised the kitchen and waiter allowed the item to be served. Mr. Val had a steak omelette. He said it had no seasoning or taste whatsoever. Our waiter was really nice and accommodating after I brought the french toast to her attention. She returned the french toast for pancakes. The pancakes were really good. I've been here once before, but I never wrote a review. I went today with my Dad and boyfriend, and this review is about that experience. We got there a little after 5, and were almost immediately approached by a manager or some other higher-up. He sat us at a booth (yay!), and a minute or so after a waiter came over to take our drink order. The rest of the meal he provided attentive, friendly, and quick service. As others have mentioned, the menu is huge. It's probably 13 some pages or even more. It would be a good idea to have some sort of an idea as to what you want to eat beforehand, otherwise you'll be there all day. In the end, my Dad and bf decided on the buffalo chicken sandwich, and I got the country fried steak. My meal came with a Caesar salad, which came out first. It could have used some fresh black pepper, but I forgot to ask. However, the croutons were delicious! Nice and crunchy and peppery. In addition, our waiter brought out some dinner rolls and butter while we waited. Not the best, but still pretty good. A few minutes later, our meals came out. As predicted, the portions are huge! I immediately cut my serving in half, so I knew when to stop eating. Plus, I hadn't even got the side of vegetables that also came with it, so there's really a lot of food. The country fried steak was good - nice fried topping, but the steak was a little chewy. Overall, still pretty good. The mashed potatoes were my favorite! They were made with redskin potatoes, and the mash had a really nice buttery and ranch taste (or some other flavor). Loved them. I would definitely go again, especially for breakfast! Or dessert. Basic diner food. We went on a Saturday morning for breakfast. I had the Belgian waffle and home fries. Both were pretty good. Service was kind of on the below average side. Not very friendly and when I asked for a kids water, they brought my two year old son a glass of water with a straw. Needless to say that table ended up a little wet. Were there no kids cups? I went to Amphora this past weekend Sunday and we got there just about the time the lunch crowd was coming so the wait for our table was about 20 min. Now I love Amphora and I am a big fan or their food but this weekend it just wasn't as good as it normally is. I had ordered a Steak and Egg and my steak was really dry and the waitress we had had forgotten a few items that we had ordered. I was a little disappointed that the counter that holds the pasteries and cakes barely had any thing in there. I normally like to take a few treats home after the meal. I come here fairly often for Sat/Sunday breakfast but usually late morning, early afternoon. My previous experiences have been ok, not great, but ok, except for one, which was my most recent visit. In a nutshell, first, and true to its menu and kitchen, the food is fairly good, lots to order, and prep'ed the way you might like, this is not the issue. On this day, the waitress/server was short of manners, skills, knowledge of the menu (other than stating there are some 300+ items on the menu or some large number). While trying to decide my order, I had to prompt for what options, etc I had to choice from, it was like pulling teeth, very painful. The icing was the lack of attention we received, the server barely checked the table once!!! Got the order- brought the order- came back to leave the check after stopping her to ask for the check!!! Despite being within feet while attending tables, (others not ours). Even when the food came, not one offer of "do you care of anything else", I literally had to stop her while she walking away, and ask for some hot sauce for my eggs. I cant give more than two stars max to this place with this situation, please get some knowledge, pleasant, and customer focus staff. Good food without a good experience is worse than, bad food with a good experience, get it. read more

So I stop by Amphora's Diner Deluxe from time to time to grab lunch while working out in the area. In general, the food is good, but I would suggest sticking to certain parts of the menu. Classic diner food is usually pretty tasty, and I always enjoy their reuben sandwich, but in other parts of the (overly-long) menu amphora seems to want to be upscale, and the quality doesn't really keep up with the prices. That said, the biggest thing that has reduced my eating here has been the staff. I'm not sure if the servers think they are (or already have) developing relationships with those of us eating, but I've had to sit through one server telling no less that 4 people at the counter about how he was asked to sleep with someones wife one weekend (always looking for the "amirite, amirite" response). Whatever he does is his business, but I'd rather not have to eat lunch hearing about this guys bizarre and somewhat gross weekend, over and over. Another server openly fights with staff every time I've visited, usually over who was supposed to be making coffee. Two of them even got into it over how to make a child's sundae! In general, this stuff happens between staff, but I've never been anyplace else that it was so out on the floor that I've felt uncomfortable or bothered enough to limit my visits. Maybe other times of day are better, but for me it now takes a real reuben desire to eat here, and then it is a get-in-get-out affair. read more

Once again, Amphora steps up their game in an effort to impress me with their rudeness and complete lack of customer service savvy. After explaining what items on the menu qualified for the coupon my friend and I brought to lunch, they then refused to honor it, claiming that they had no way of circumventing their computer's automated order entry logic. It was a simple BOGO coupon, and anyone with at least a high school diploma and working fingers should be able to deduct the less expensive of two entrees from the tab, but not these geniuses. I then made the mistake of rewarding them with additional business by requesting a strawberry cheesecake to go, only to find out 6 hours later, at home, that they screwed that up too and gave me chocolate. When you can get it served hot and without an argument from the snotty wait staff, the food is passable, hence, two stars. read more

In the 1990s this diner was one of Herndon's best places to eat. The all night atmosphere, the bustle of all kinds of people, and the variety on the menu made the diner very popular. In the past twenty years the diner has tried to hold on to this prestige and sadly has lost most of it. What you will find today is a worn down restaurant with unenthusiastic staff along with an incomprehensible menu and bland food. First off, as to the menu, it is HUGE. The menu is almost like reading a novel it has so many pages. The diner literally offers everything from breakfast to lunch, seafood dinners, steakhouse meals, as well as traditional Greek cuisine. With such a wide swath of food, very little of it is good. The one area that the diner does pretty well on is breakfast omelets and some of their lamb dishes to include the gyro. Other than that, the food is often prepared and served cold. Its also hit and miss with the wait staff. Some of the waiters and waitresses are friendly and nice to talk to (especially during the day), but some insider info has reveled many of them work 12-14 sometimes 16 hour shifts. A lot of them are depressed and a fair number don't speak English very well. When I go out to eat I want a nice wait staff who caters to my needs, not an overworked and tired person who I can barely understand because they don't speak English very well. The only positive to side to that is the diner will comp your meal for the slightest complaint, but this is often abused especially at night by kids who don't have enough to pay the bill so they make up a story to get their waiter in trouble and their food for free. Then the diner itself - in 20 years it hasn't changed...at all. The place looks to be falling apart in some areas and needs some serious repair work and a remodeling effort. Not much else to say about that. So, its very mediocre food with an atmosphere of depression. Don't get your hopes up if you eat there. read more

If I could rate this place 0 based on first impression I would. Let's put it this way, about 10 of us pulling a late night at work needed some grub and this was the only spot open in town. We left and drove an extra 5-10 miles up to IHOP on Leesburg Pike because no one could stand the smell as soon as we walked in the door. Literally nearly made 3 members of our group hurl. We had our wedding reception there and everything was impeccable and just like we dreamed to have it. The food was salmon, broccoli, and mashed potatoes. We also had our cake made at the Amphora Bakery. They did a fantastic job making it exactly like we wanted. The flavor for the cake was red velvet, and wow! Everybody complimented everything. Not only was the room gorgeous, the tables were set up nicely, and the food was the number one thing! I was so proud. I'm not sure how the restaurant is for a regular day, but for big events, I highly recommend it! We had about 65 people in our reception. It was wonderful! read more

I used to come here ALOT late night from parties, clubbing, etc. Now that I've discovered better 24 hour joints, I haven't been back since! The food here is usually consistent. I've never really had BAD food before, but its not the best. I prefer amphora over ihop any day, but then again a lot of places are better than ihop. Service is 75% okay. If you want GOOD food late night, go to Annandale or Ba Le in Falls Church. They don't serve traditional American, but the food is MUCH better. read more
