I've been here twice for dinner and loved it both times! The first time I went with two girl friends on a Friday night and we all ordered salmon burgers with sweet potatoe fries. They were absolutely delicious. Salmon tasted super fresh and the burger melted in your mouth. The next time I cam here I brought my mom and her colleague when they were visited Boston. We ordered the antipasto platter and fried calamari to start. The platter was huge and came with prosciutto, salami, artichoke hearts, mozz/tomatoe, and roasted red peppers. Everything was very fresh as expected. I ordered the crab stuffed haddock as my entree with vegetables and mashed potatoes on the side. A friend of mine took me here a few days ago. This was my first time here (so this review is really based on one visit). Overall: Yummy :) I was in the mood for a salad with grilled fish, and I found one :P I got the Greek salad with grilled salmon and it tasted delicious! My friend recommends the scallops. Also, the fresh warm bread rolls with dipping olive oil were a sweet gesture, and the Boston Creme Pie dessert was definitely a winner. I think what improved my overall dining experience, though, was the ambience. We got a cozy little booth in the quieter area of the restaurant (the TVs were in the other room at the bar) and it was perfect, since we came there to talk and enjoy pleasant conversation. I do want to go back and sit at the bar some time. I guess it's one of the oldest hand-carved bars in Boston or the US? Something like that. Anyways - it's really quite a beautiful carving. Came here for lunch and had the Clam Chowder. All I can say is Holy Lobster...the chowder was filled with huge chunks of lobter and clams, not fillers like potatoes like some other places do it. Very reasonable and worth the money. If in the area and looking for some Chowder I would definately give this place a try. read more

Comfort food is how I would describe it, and it's so yummy! I was here on a Saturday evening, we only waited a few minutes without a reservation. The atmosphere is cozy, nice, but not fancy. I had lunch here with a friend last Saturday during the Southie Street Festival. We ate outside on the patio, which was lovely, although a partial view of a parking lot is never what i call scenic. My friend had the chicken pot pie, while I had the raspberry goat cheese salad. Her pot pie was definitely delicious, and very generously portioned, but it quickly looked like a plate of slop. "But it's tasty slop," she said. My salad was also of a decent size, and also very good. Imagine a plate of baby greens, warm, pistachio-crusted goat cheese, candied walnuts, and fresh raspberries. Sound awesome? I thought so. There was even a bit of raspberry foam garnishing the plate. My general impression on the menu was that it's a slightly updated take on American comfort classics. There is both a large, well-appointed dining room and a bar inside; they're both attractive spaces. I have a feeling this place gets busy at night on the weekends. It's not often that I'm in Southie, but Amrhein's is definitely worth the trek. read more

I've been here a few times since they re-did it and it has been OK at best. We were there the first week after the new launch and the seafood casserole was actually frozen in the center. I am not one to send things back but this was a bit much. It was not so much that it was frozen but how they handled it. No one really apologized about it and just basically laughed it off. I have been here many times and have always had great food and service. The steak tips are one of the best in Boston, the lobster mac n cheese has huge chunks of lobster, the baked stuffed haddock is cooked perfectly and had a good bit of light and tasty crabmeat. The hand-carved bar is truly a piece of artwork and the decor is casual yet classy. One thing that separates Amrhein's to me is the service. Once when there for a dinner date, my date and I had taken a few hours, talking at length after eating. We truly should have moved to the bar and when the hostess came over with endless apologies to ask us to move one table over so they could use our table for a group of 20 she was so genuinely sorry and kind I was very impressed. She mentioned feeling mortified asking this and offering free desserts and drinks in exchange for our kindly moving. We laughed such things off and before we knew it desserts and more were at our table without our even having to ask once. It is rare to find such consideration and kindness these days and Amrhein's will always be special to me given that kindness. read more

Amrheins hosted our wedding reception in June. I am still getting compliments from our guests on how amazing the waitstaff was. I really had fun planning with them. My fiance and I showed up to meet Donna with no gameplan and she was so pumped to do everything and walk us through the entire thing. Okay, let's get down to business. I didn't know this place existed, but I must say, it's a pretty good find. I was expecting a very low-key bar, heavy with people just lingering around after a Boston sports game, but that's not what I saw. I saw a really nice looking dining area, with a separate room, where they serve "wealthier" guests (so it seems). They have all heights of seating for your choosing. Waiting for a table seemed longer than normal, but we might have came during a transition time. We were seated and greeted by our waitress right away after. She was great, especially when it came to pouring our drinks, which were a generous amount. Warm rolls are the best, by the way, so thank you! The portions were a good size, and boy, was the burger a lot. With a side of fries too! It was juicy, and there was the right amount of sauce on it that you just kept wanting to eat more even if you couldn't anymore. Conveniently located near the 24-hour South Station post office (where, if you have a roommate who sells antique rags on eBay, you might find yourself more often than you think), this place is old. So old that they claim to have the oldest bar in Boston. But there are flat screens, black pleather booths, and recessed lighting. It took forever for our food to come out. I checked the kitchen. It's open, and it can clearly be seen that it, too, is modern. So no excuses that they're dealing with some sort of antiquated puritan setup. Side choices for my pan roasted chicken breast included mashed potatoes, potatoes, french fries, sweet potatoes and steamed vegetables. The french fries were good (with little crusties on the outside, but not too heavy), but they charged extra for my healthy salad substitute. Bring your patience. read more

3.5 Stars We chose this restaurant after a Yelp search for an affordable seafood restaurant in South Boston that was also good for kids and Amrheins stood out having a decent star rating. We had just left the beach so we were all still pretty dressed down. They have their own parking lot which is a big plus. The host was very friendly but sat us in a high booth. It felt rather odd to have children sitting in that area and also facing the bar but a big plus about it being high was that it kind of prevented them from wanting to run around as much. The patrons at the bar weren't raunchy or rambunctious enough that I was worried for the kids. There was a lunch menu with lobster roll for $19 that had a generous amount of large lobster pieces although I was not a fan of the semi hard but also chewy bread. The sweet potato fries were also crisp and tasty. The calamari was good but it was covered in sweet chili sauce which I love but would have preferred it on the side. The kids surprisingly also enjoyed the calamari (kids are very, very picky). The kids themselves were offered their own menu with crayons and a special kids cup for the youngest. The lobster mac and cheese was also good. The rolls came after we were served and I was too full to try them. The waitress was very friendly and handled children very well. She was nice enough to quietly ask the adults only if there was to be dessert (we declined). Overall it was a nice and easy experience, I didn't have a problem with the food or service. read more

Am in town from Long Beach, CA and was craving some Lobster Mac n Cheese, so yelped the best in Boston and decided to give Amrheins a shot! First off, the inside of the place is really good and throwback ish, which was cool and what I want in Boston. I sat the bar with my buddy who's from South Boston and I ordered the Lobster Mac n Cheese and he got the chicken pot pie. They were both amazing!! Went with a party of 18 for my mother's 80th birthday. The food was delicious - our party had lobster mac and cheese, pork chop melanese, and steak tips, among other dishes. My steak tips were beautifully tender and medium rare as ordered. The service was spectacular, especially from our server Sean. He was really accommodating, helped us split our order into separate checks, and happily got us everything we needed. He made sure that the cake we brought was presented after the meal and then served to everyone, and even packaged up extra pieces for those who wanted to take some cake home. Went back again with my wife today. Once again, the food is fantastic. I ordered the Fisherman's Stew and my wife the Apple Cinnamon Ravioli. We also enjoy the ambiance. We had an issue with a waiter not bringing us our order, then disappearing on us. But another very helpful and nice waitress named Carly stepped in. Also, Donna the manager was very attentive and very nice. She really understands what it takes to get customers to want to go back. If all restaurants had a manager like her it would definitely be an asset to their reputation and bottom line. read more

Unfortunately, the food here is unbelievably over priced for what you're getting. I ordered a run of the mill lunch menu tuna wrap for $16--not worth it. I disagree when people say you're paying for the atmosphere and ambiance--the restaurant was built in 1890, I'm sure they've recovered their fixed costs by now. It's a toss up whether I'd recommend this restaurant--maybe for an after work cocktail but I'd be hard pressed to pay for a meal here again. read more

Ate here last week with a friend. The lounge was incredibly noisy so we asked to be reseated in the dining room. The waitress was fine and seemed to be taken with my Irish friend (not so much me!). The room was a bit cold and I had to wrap my jack around my shoulders. The menu was big and they were out of a few things. The prices were OK - cheaper than the upscale places in town but more money than a diner. The rolls seemed to be made from frozen bread dough and the butter had sugar (?) in it - very odd. I had the meat loaf. Good sized portion and it was fine if a bit average. The gravy came right out of a jar and the creamed spinach definitely tasted burnt. The mashed potatoes were tasty enough. My friend had a steak that looked good and sauteed spinach (not burnt). Cute "doggie bag" boxes. The waitress asked if we wanted the rolls and butter. We politely declined. read more

Quick service, friendly staff, clean atmosphere, average food. Ate dinner here with a large party on Sunday the 8th of March. To their credit, we were served pretty quickly considering were a large party of about 14. My appetizer, a cup of clam chowder, was tasty but I suspected it came from a can. The main course was lobster pie, which really wasn't a pie at all. Instead, it's lobster meat served with crab stuffing. Again, it was tasty and the portions were decent, but the stuffing was a bit dry. The two sides I ordered were a slightly overcooked serving of brussel sprouts, and rice pilaf was just okay. Not a bad place, but I wouldn't go out of my way to return. There are more memorable, and superior, dining experiences in Boston. read more

Went there to grab some cocktails with friends while visiting the area. Nice athmosphere. Was really digging the playlist. GM is all about customer service and engaging. Newly renovated but don't let Google fool you they are open after 11pm. The staff can get a little too comfortable behind-the-scenes the bar of its too slow, but overall attentive when needed. Although I was shocked when I asked for a Stoli and soda and watched the bartender pour Smirnoff and when I inquired she said they use it as a substitute. Hmmmm. Typically those aren't the same in price... Just pay attention to the bar stock before you order. Make no assumptions about what they have available. read more

For example help someone park there for 5 minutes to unload their bike of their car because we can't pull into the garage. We had booked Amrheins for our daughter's baptism this past Sunday! Marsha helped me pick the menu items. Donna was an amazing manager and went above and beyond to help decorate and make sure everyone was happy! When a bakery forgot about the cake- Donna went to 3 different bakeries to find us a cake for our celebration! Brittany was a wonderful waitress! Though Amrhein's has been a Boston landmark I can rate the newer version. The place has that feel of an old Boston bar , with some nice updated appointments. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our server was on top of our needs and knowledgeable of wine choices and beer selections. Would have expected a larger beer selection For starters we chose the lobster tail, came recommended , a very good choice. Lobster tail was a good size served with an orange marmalade dipping sauce. For my entree I ordered the swordfish w/ Sambuca rice, this is definitely a winner. My wife ordered the lobster mac and cheese, I tried it and is probably by far the best . Rich and cheesy with plenty of fresh lobster meat. Prices are fair ,food's good, portions are plentiful without going overboard. I've been coming here my whole life and have always had good food and service. Was back in town recently, was racking my brain to think of a place in Southie to eat (as it's changed quite a bit) and then went, oh - Amrheins. I got the pan seared scallops, they were cooked to perfection. My gf had the lobster mac n cheese which was outrageous. Sooooo cheesy, which I love, and I was very impressed with the al dente cook on the pasta (and the type of pasta) that they used. That takes attention to detail (I know, as I obsess over cooking time when I make pasta at home.) I just returned to L.A. and ordered the same dish at an Italian place and it was put to shame by Amrheins. This place has changed but one thing that has remained consistent is good food and service. I have come here many times since moving to Southie 2 years ago, but the dinner I had last night was worth a review. My boyfriend and I were looking for an easy, "home cooked-like" and both were achieved. We were seated right away in the dining room portion. Hometown, old people decor kind of feel, but very comfortable. The waitress was very nice and quick. After we got our drinks and ordered the meal, however, we had to wait a bit for the appetizers. We got bread to hold us over, but felt it was unusually long. We ordered the bruschetta, which looked different from the last time we were there, but it was amazing. A little unique - tomatoes, artichokes, peppers, and other vegetables with a large piece of bread, goat cheese and mozzarella. It was so tasty and will definitely be ordered again! My boyfriend got the onion soup which was "eh" in his opinion but he considers himself an onion soup connoisseur. After the appetizers we waited quite a bit again for the main course. Both times that we were waiting the waitress came over, apologized profusely, and explained how it was a new chef (hence the different bruschetta) and offered to take items off the bill for our patience. After we got our entrees she told us that it was unacceptable for our wait time and decided that the restaurant will pay for our entire meal - drinks and all! I found it to be very nice of them considering we've waited a lot longer at other more expensive restaurants without even an apology (P.S. I hope our sever found our $20 tip under the beer bottle - how to do you tip when you don't even get a bill? :) ) I got the Chicken Bella Bocca, a little "saucy" for me, but still very good. My boyfriend got the stir fry that came with a lot of chicken and vegetables. Again, very good. Great comfort food. This is a review of Sunday Brunch only. It was delicious. All you can eat buffet...that's actually tasty! The omelet station has a special chef and he delivers your omelet to your table so you're free to get in line - if there even is one - and grab some more delicious breakfast food. The omelets aren't too big either, which is nice because it leaves more room for the other foods - breakfast, lunch, or dessert items - on your plate. I went here for brunch after a very groggy evening. Our waitress was prompt, showed us where the buffet was, and how to order omelets from the chef. Buffet was decent, the food was good but the hot food could have been hotter. Fresh fruit, good array of breakfast meats, and then the omelets. Our waitress was pretty standard. But the best part of this brunch was the hostess. She could not have been more excited to be at work. We walked in for brunch as a very tired party of two. When my friend asked for a table for two for brunch, she barely looked up from her stand where she was leaning for support, repeated our request, and walked towards a table. As many years of restaurant going told my instincts..we should follow her to be seated. No, follow me this way, no, your waitress will be with you shortly, and no, enjoy your meal. On the way out, we said thank you and she barely mustered out a, thanks for coming. Now miss hostess, I understand it is a Sunday morning. Maybe you're hungover, and I sympathize. Not being a huge fan of (what I thought was) Pub Food - I wasn't sure I would love Amrheins. A Boston institution - I had still managed to avoid it all these years. However, I read on a local food blog: carrotsncake.com about this amazing pumpkin risotto at Amrheins SERVED IN A PUMPKIN and I knew I had to go. My girlfriends and I arrived on Saturday night at about 7pm, were seated right away and served a delicious bread basket with olive oil dipping sauce. The dining room was cozy and well-kept. Um, so much for me thinking this was just another Southie pub. Our table ordered the wedge salad, mixed greens and the goat cheese salad - and all were delicious. Fresh vegetables and homemade-tasting dressings. And then on to the main event.... Chicken, Craisin, Cashew Risotto baked into a Pumpkin. It was easily the BEST thing I have eaten this fall. Perfectly cooked risotto and the amazing textures and flavors of the nuts, craisins, chicken and pumpkin deliciousness. Amazing. It was pretty huge too (I ended up eating the leftovers, not once, but twice!) - so its certainly worth the ~$20 price tag. I like Amrhein's, but probably won't be back any time soon because it's too expensive. I can get drinks/dinner of the same caliber at many other places around Boston or right in the city. Don't get me wrong - food and service were both good. And it's a unique place with both indoor and outdoor seating. Good selection on the menu - food was solid. For being in South Boston, the prices just don't make a ton of sense! My suggestion? Skip dinner at Amrhein's and drive a little bit more up the street to Sweet Tooth. read more

When we got here, we ordered two Pan Seared Salmon and a New York steak, medium rare; along with a starter. Our starter never came out and the waitress never checked in, except when taking our orders, bringing out the food, and taking the plates. We asked her about the starter when she brought out the food and she said she forgot about it, but then she corrected it. The steak was undercooked and lacked flavor, but the fries were good. Both in my party that ordered the Salmon said that it was rather dry. We were never asked if we wanted refills when our glasses were empty. Overall, if I return to Boston in the future, I am unlikely to come here. Would not recommend if you want fast service and attentive staff. Way too expensive for the quality of food and service. read more

It's a lot like other places that have this all you can eat brunch (although about 20% more in price than those places). The food was mixed in quality. I thought the potatoes were better than average but the potato skins were worse than most. The salad, omelette, fruit were all decent. I made a caesar salad with clam strips on top and liked that the most. Best part is the parking lot and they take reservations. As another reviewer noted, I would not object to going here but would not make a special trip out here. They also had a wide variety--from fish to steak to bacon and ravioli--I think every one could find something they would like. Coffee was better than average. read more
