Pretty good, long time neighborhood establishment. I ordered the shepherd's pie which, for a lunch portion, was quite large. It had plenty of veggies and a rich mincemeat mixture. While most of South Boston continues down the path of gentrification and copes with all that comes (sushi, artisan meatballs, and a French restaurant...in "Southie?") and goes away (Crossroads Pub, most recently) with that, Amrhein's, a South Boston tradition since 1890, remains in play. And, that's a good thing. I live close by in Dorchester (where the same gentrification is also changing the restaurant landscape) and I work out of South Boston, and it is ALWAYS a pleasure to visit a Boston staple where, like that other, albeit fictional bar..."everyone knows your name." That friendly neighborly ambiance speaks volumes about the indigenous staff, many of whom now live in "Southie" or hail from close by (Quincy, Dorchester, etc.). The familiarity and sense of being close to "home" lends to a very relaxed but vibrant vibe and sometimes creates an amazing volume of bar and restaurant chatter, especially when things are busy, which they usually are moving toward the dinner hour. In my opinion, most people like Amrhein's for its laid-back and casual atmosphere, and they come back and relative to that "familial" feel you will, indeed, find entire families--all three generations--gathering in Amrhein's for fun, food, and festivities. Between myself and my friends, we've had just about everything on the menu. (One fella is addicted to their cheesy, aromatic French Onion Soup, another to his specialized order of grilled salmon over Caesar salad). I love their Roasted Beet & Goat Cheese salad, risotto, and Mac-n-Cheese "Premium Sides." Some of the portions (meat loaf entree and chicken pot pie, come to mind) are humongous. Their pizzas are creative and tasty (yet another friend special orders a potato-and-bacon pie). Their daily specials keep things interesting. Prices, mid-range. Food service, usually spot on (EVERY restaurant will have a day or night when things get batty due to sick calls, special events, large groups arriving simultaneously, etc.). We usually post up at the bar where the service is superb. Bartenders: Kaitlin, Victoria, Christine, Rory, and Jodi...superstars! On it, like hornets. Attentive, hilarious, and amiable. Believe me, as an ex-bartender, I know how hard it is to keep your bar guests sated and satisfied while also keeping up with the--seemingly endless--drink orders arriving via the sit-down patrons. Ammie's bartenders work with the wait staff...flawlessly. Managers Mike and Donna, and the entire Amrhein's staff: the New England Patriots personified in a restaurant staff. Champs! And, they do it with a smile, sincerity, and a neighborly touch. Amrhein's has the usual variety of craft beers, either on draft (where some selections change by season) or by the can or bottle. Judging by the cluster of wine bottles situated near the service station, I'm not going out on a limb saying that they have a decent wine selection too (they do have a "wine list"). Amrhein's had some renovations in 2005 and it is the proud home of the oldest hand carved bar in America and still has the first Draft Beer pump in Boston on display. I think of Amrhein's the same way I think of the Old State House near downtown Boston: a stately, old-timey place that stands proud and tall amidst more contemporary attractions. Wow. This place was great. Could easily become a new favorite. I would almost give it five stars except for a few minor points (see negatives below). Positives: Awesome food. Delicious shrimp scampi crostini appetizer was served with luscious giant shrimp and a decadent cream sauce. Melted cheese covered the crostini and ripe red and yellow tomatoes nicely complemented the shrimp. Yum. Generous portions. Steak tips and lobster and crab stuffed filet of sole was served with a large heap of garlic mashed potatoes and a sizeable dish of squash. Food was served piping hot and the steak was sizzling. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Good value if you're used to prices in Back Bay/ South End. Cool old school music including disco and 80s They take Discover. Negatives Crazed people driving the in the wrong lane practically killed us on our way there then had the gall to scream at us (not that that should reflect poorly on the restaurant, but was a bit a scary and maybe more a commentary on the location) Said cool music was a bit too loud. We stopped here for dinner one Saturday night, when most other places were full. The bar was packed, but there were plenty of open tables. The food was pretty standard bar/pub food - we both ordered off the specials menu, and while I wasn't super impressed, it was good. We had the nicest server, who brought us extra bread (so good) and checked on us often with a friendly smile. The atmosphere was nice - it was dimly lit and not too loud, despite the crowd at the bar, and there were plenty of TVs all around. Overall, I'd return if I wanted something low-key. read more

This South Boston landmark is a reminder of the old southie. The building is just beautiful with wood and antique detail. The bar is one of a kind and the bar staff is young, upbeat and knowlegable. Try the thin mint martini...it's like a dessert with a nice kick! I had the calm chowder which was traditional, fairly thick white chowder, as well as the filet that came with a zesty bearnaise sauce, and delicious potatoes au gratin. The steak was done perfectly. My mom had the turkey budger with sweet potato fries. She really enjoyed it. Service was excellent. Great!!! Walked over after a day at PAX at the Boston Convention Center. Every thing was perfect. We ordered the Bruschetta and Roasted Beets with goat cheese salad for appetizers. They were both very fresh and delicious. My husband had the Boiled meal (corned beef and cabbage), I had the marinated steak tips, and our friends had the Caprese Avocado Salad and the Chicken Marsala. All good! I really liked the marinade on the steak. We will be going back every time we are in Boston!!! read more

I've been here a handful of times, actually my sister's favorite place to eat! I always get the same thing, beef burger with cheddar jack cheese and sweet potato fries. Amazing! I have been a fan of Amrheins for years!! My mother, sister and sister-in-law died for the pumpkin chicken risotto. It became a girl's night tradition every year! We noticed the quality of the meal went downhill over the past 2 years. We were all especially disappointed last month.. the pumpkin was "deflated", there were no cashews or cranberries, barely any chicken and worst of all no flavor. My husband and I ended up at Tresca a couple of weeks later, celebrating our anniversary, and had the BEST meals of our lives. Rich Tresca Ansara is the chef there and he is AMAZING!!! There is nothing he can't turn into magic. He even provided us the most delicious dessert- on the house- to end the night! I highly recommend Tresca in the North End if you want your pumpkin chicken risotto. read more

I used to love Amhreins, now I don't even know when they are open. Went tonight and some girl said we are closed. It was 8:30. Hours show mon - thurs 5A to 9p. I also went on a Monday, mid day, and they were closed with no explanation. I noticed the dinner menu had shrunk but put that off to COVID and business being so slow. Now I'm wondering if they are closing and just don't care anymore? It's too bad because it was the best place for many years. read more

Good idea for some traditional New England food. The clam chowder was nice & typical, but good. Shepherd's Pie was delicious and served scalding hot in a cast iron skillet straight out of the oven. They had a good beer selection even though the waiter didn't know much about the types of beer. Semi-historic environment...they claim 1890, but it doesn't have the historic feel so much. I have no excuse except that it's close to home and our visits were so widely spread apart that we forgot how bad it was the previous time - until we remembered. Service is terrible. Soup arrives after entrees, waitresses are MIA and forget to bring things - that sort of thing. All the time. The bar side is so loud you can't even hear yourself think and the dining room side is full of blue-hairs who remember what Amrheins was like "back in the day". The menu tries to be creatives and fails miserably. I noticed another reviewer applauded the very dish I am about to slam! Shrimp scampi crostini should NOT come with a cheese sauce, especially when the menu makes no mention of it. Scampi is made of garlic, wine and oil or butter I think...but not cheese. And once the "heirloom" tomato & mozzarella salad my boyfriend ordered came out with about 3 unripe grape tomatoes like you get at the Stop & Shop salad bar. The food is just not good, no matter how good the menu makes it sound. Maybe if they stuck to bar food...Wait, on second thought, they can't even do that well. The fries that come with the burger are soggy. You know you're in trouble if you're at a place that can't do French Fries right. My BIG ISSUE with this place is that if you pay your bill with cash the servers keep your change. They actually keep the coins without asking. So if your bill comes out to be $53.45...they round it up and bring you back change as if your bill was $54.00. I'm sorry but if someone takes something from you without asking that's stealing. I dine out 15x per month and this is the only restaurant which has this policy. From a conversation I had with the waitress and then a follow up call with the manager I was told the waitstaff doesn't carry change so they round up the bills. Doing some calculations I concluded that this can generate an additional $300 divided up between the waitstaff on a busy day. Other than the fact they take your money without asking the place is pretty good. The atmosphere is nice. The food average to above average. The pricing isn't cheep but reasonable for a Boston Restaurant. My friends and I visit this place about once a month, more so during the spring and summer. I wish I could give it a better rating but the change issue is like the pebble in a really comfortable pair of shoes. It may seem petty to some people but i don't want to look over my shoulder to see if people are giving me back the correct change. When I go to a gas station and ask for $10 worth of gas I don't want the attendant giving me $9.50 and keeping .50 cents for himself. I don't expect the teller at the bank to take an additional dollar out of my account when I do a transaction. Call me crazy but I expect that if a bill is $53.45 and I give them $60 that I should receive $6.55 back. read more

THEY STOLE OUR FOOD, LITERALLY! I don't know what to say, this was the plot for a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode but it happened to us the other day at Amrhein's. We were celebrating my dad's birthday and went out to eat a family meal. My brother ordered the Lobster Mac n Cheese and went with a full order (this cost $24). One thing you have to understand about my brother is that he is built like a stick, he decided to get the full order because he could bring the leftovers home with him. So the end of the meal rolls around and both myself and him decided to take the rest of our food back. I ordered the Pumpkin Risotto and also had a fair amount left on the plate. We ask the waitress to pack our leftovers and she comes back with a plastic bag containing the leftovers in two boxes. We never opened the leftovers at the restaurant to check, I mean why would we? I guess we were naive to assume that the restaurant would give us the food we paid for. We came home and decided to put the food away in the fridge. That's when we noticed that the box containing my brothers food was tiny, compared to mine. This was despite the fact that his portion was much larger and he barely ate a quarter of it. It was at that point we realized that either the waiter or the kitchen staff had basically taken my brothers leftovers for themselves and put a skimpy serving in a small take out box. I hope this is clear. THEY TOOK OUR LEFTOVERS FOR THEMSELVES! WHO DOES THAT? We are joking about how this plot mirrored a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode and then we decided to go on Yelp and see if anyone else had a similar experience. I have not read a review like this yet, but there are plenty of 1-2 star ratings, we ended up learning about other shady practices such as not honoring vouchers and not giving customers back exact change (i.e. rounding off totals for themselves). To be honest I don't think the whole thing about the change is that big a deal, but when I compared that to the experience we just had I couldn't believe that this restaurant continues to be in operation. Basically Amrheins was the most screwed up eating experience I've ever had. I'm looking forward to telling EVERYONE about what happened to us. read more

Just ok. I don't think I'd come out of my way to go here, but the food is decent, there's tons of seating inside and outside, and the food is good. There was nothing in particular about it that wowed me or made a very strong impression though. It seems like that kind of place you'd go to if you were hungry and you just decided to go into some random place because you'd never been there before. I had the chicken tenders for an appetizer which were good but average at the same time, and then for my entrée I had a turkey burger with sweet potato fries. The turkey burger was fine, but the sweet potato stood out more in terms of flavor. I went with 3 other people so I was able to try a nibble of the crab cake (meh), the steak tips (delicious!), and the turkey tips risotto (risotto was fantastic but apparently the turkey was too dry). I wish I could say Amrheins is good for big groups and brunch, but it's not. I had made a reservation on OpenTable for a large party, weeks in advance for Sunday brunch. The first red flag was that nobody called me to confirm my reservation. For a restaurant that is over 100 years old, I expected that they'd follow the standard protocol to confirm. I called Amrheins the evening before, and the hostess assured me that the table will fit all 12 of us. She even asked if there were any elderly guests in my party (we had none), which I thought was considerate. When we arrived, they brought us to a round high-top booth table that could probably fit only 6 people comfortably. This was poorly planned on their part, and the staff could not offer anything besides bring out a few extra chairs, but to no avail. We were squished like sardines, along with all of our coats and purses. Mind you, we are pretty average-sized people. I had zero elbow room and felt like a T-Rex struggling to use its arms. Because it was a booth table and not individual chairs, we had to coordinate getting our food from the buffet at the same time. If someone sitting in the middle had to use the restroom, all of us would have to get up and let that person free. It was honestly one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences. The AYCE brunch buffet is on Sundays only, in Amrheins's bar room. $25 per person covers food, coffee/juice/tea, tax, and gratuity. Highlights: omelette station, carving station & desserts Fail: *cold* steak, mashed potatoes, yogurt (bowl not properly kept on ice) MIA: waffles, French toast, chicken pot pies - I was actually looking forward to these specific items, which were listed on the web site. Everything else tasted mediocre. To be fair, the food never ran out, there was a wide selection, and *almost* everything was served hot. Our waiter was quick to clear our plates and refill drinks, though he was not particularly personable. Also, we were never offered a cocktail menu. I can't say I'll return for brunch, or with a large group ever, especially if Tavern in the Square supposedly offers a better brunch buffet and guarantees seating for large parties. This used to be a sure thing. Good neighborhood place for a solid dinner. Now, it's just overpriced not-so-good food. We are in Boston, why are the sea scallops drowning in gravy? Unless they are covering up poor quality. And the mashed potatoes. Water logged. You screwed up potatoes in an Irish community like South Boston? And add sugar? Stop! Why would anyone but a failed culinarian add sugar to white mashed potatoes? Will someone please tell them they are not yams? I will give props to an appetizer called the Eggplant Tower. Now they're thinking. Fresh ingredients, good cheese in between pan fried slices of eggplant on top of a wonderful red sauce garnished with fresh basil. I should have stopped there. My boyfriend had an $8 salad, but he added steak tips. So it came to $18. For 3 steak tips. That were chewy. Really chewy. Another Boston staple they can't get right. read more

I'm a fan after only one visit. Amrhein's lured me in with their 100+ years of history, upscale bar setting with a laid back feel, and deliciously scrumptious food. This is a good spot to take someone that you've been dating awhile, but not necessarily a great place for a first date. I say that because it can get a bit loud, and the atmosphere isn't wowing in terms of a date spot. However, if you have been dating someone for awhile, you want a laid back atmosphere, but a bit nicer... and you're not concerned with environment to assist in wooing your date... this could be a good choice. The warm fresh bread and olive oil for dipping was perfect, and the olive oil was so good! I then had the filet... 10 oz of awesomeness with broccoli and mashed potatoes. I swear I wanted to lick the plate clean (except for the mushrooms that were orig atop my steak) but that is just not ladylike, so I refrained. My partner in crime for this excursion ordered one of the specials of the day: pumpkin ravioli with chicken -- also said to be very good. Another bonus to this spot?! It's so close to my house! Only 2.5 miles away, or a few stops on the T and I'm there. If you're taking the T, this is a short walk, so perfect distance to use public transit. Can't wait to go back! read more

I need to respond to Don D's comments because they are not correct. I have been to Amrheins at least 9 times over the nine years that I've lived here. In my opinion before the renovations, the food was decent. The 4-5 times that I went there for business lunches and for dinner the food was good, reasonably priced, and service was good. After the renovations, the food has not been consistent, the prices have increased, and the service is haphazard. The example of the clam pizza being brought out raw happened within the past 6 - 8 months. It did not happen years ago. After we informed the waitress, so was completely embarrassed and apologetic. We told her we didn't want it and to take it off the bill. Instead they tried to make up for it by bringing us out another pizza and not charging us. Like I said before Amrheins is not a place that I will be frequenting since there are so many other comparable restaurants in the neighborhood with better food and comparable prices. The only thing that I might go back and try is the brunch. Again someone had said to me this weekend that the brunch is good. I would not be surprised since I love Mul's Diner across the street who is owned by the same people as Amrheins! read more

I am thrilled that I have finally been introduced to the goodness that is Amrhein's. Hard to pronounce but easy to fall in love with, Amrhein's is exactly the kind of establishment I could see myself becoming a regular at. Everything from the salads to the lobster bake is just seeping with deliciousness. Even more fabulous; the service! People love working there, and you can tell. It's no wonder why. My low rating is based on the food I ate, not the bar or service. My sister and I came here for a late lunch around 2:30pm on Sunday. The service was very good, our server was nice and attentive and our food came out quickly. We were very disappointed there were no sandwiches on the menu which I found surprising. We split an order of french fries and they were ok, a little cold. My sister had the chicken quesadilla which was loaded with chicken and she said was good. I had the penne with broccoli and chicken and it was just ok. It was definitely not great, and I would not come back for the food when there are so many options to eat in the area. Overcooked grilled salmon on a bed of risotto (from the turkey tips side, swapped). Risotto was clearly pre-made, then reheat in the microwave. A pool of grease can be seen on the surface with the edges of the risotto dried out from overheating and more fat oozing out at the edges. It looks borderline gross. The risotto was made with a ton of cream, and not in a good way. I can feel my arteries clogging after taking a bite. It tasted sweet and I don't understand why would risotto taste sweet? I left the risotto mostly untouched. My friend's plate of steak tips were dry, and the plate looks very sloppy. Mashed potatoes and veggies thrown in carelessly onto the plate with the steak tips. My sister and I had dropped her husband off at the airport and wanted to grab dinner. Growing up Amrheins was the place we went with our Nana for special occasions. Hadn't been there much over the last several years, but I am so glad we stopped in tonight. We lucked out and got a table for 2, but by 6:15 it was already packed. I had the short ribs which MELTED in my mouth. My sister had the steak tips with mashed and macaroni and cheese which was also DELICIOUS! The prices were very reasonable, especially for the excellent quality of the meal we had. Our waitress was CLAIRE, she was great at answering our questions and I let her "surprise me" with my meal (gave her the choice of 2 items and ended up with the short ribs). Normally I am turned off by restaurants that offer menus longer than two pages long. Too many options lead to analysis paralysis. However, the long list of goodies this place had to offer were not that overwhelming and all seemed to make sense. Lobster Mac and Cheese, lobster and crab cake, and chicken risotto served in a pumpkin all immediately popped out of the menu. With 6 offerings of beef/steaks, I was surprised I passed up on this opportunity. Instead I opted for the Jumbo Sea Scallops seared in Brown Sage Butter with Lemon, served on a Bed of Braised Baby Spinach and Roasted garlic Mashed. This is by far, the best meal I have had in months. everything came together in harmonious synchrony. I loved it! read more

I had been to Amrheins once before after work for a little food and drinks with coworkers and liked the place just fine. Typical bar with typical drinks and I had a turkey burger that I enjoyed. So, when a friend asked me to lunch one day I suggested Amrheins. I went on a Sunday around lunch time but did not know the only option is a brunch buffet, you cannot order off of a regular menu. I was disappointed because we really didn't come for brunch, but hey, food is food. The brunch was where this place lost stars. I definitely did not think this brunch buffet was anything above average. You could get better elsewhere for the price. For $21 per person, the price is slightly above most brunch buffets, but not by much. But there really are not that many options, and a lot of the food was cold and hard if it wasn't kept in a buffet pan. And even some of the food kept in the pans were not the right temperature. They ruined perfectly good (well, decent) calamari with a syrupy pepper sauce. Had they not tried to be clever, I'm sure it would have tasted fine.
